Profiles in Community and Leadership Linda Stewart is a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing the 47th District, which includes central Orange County, since 2012 and a former Orange County Commissioner. She has been married to Jerry Stewart for 39 years, a mother of three, grandmother of 6 and has lived in the Conway area of Orlando since she was an infant, except for a brief time when she lived abroad in Europe.
it, they just turn on the tap and it’s there. But because so many people want to visit us or make Florida their new home, we’ve really got to start thinking of smarter ways to manage a priceless resource. Another thing impacting my constituents, particularly downtown, is transportation. We’re starting to offer more options besides cars – SunRail and Lymmo, are two examples – but Central Florida now has 1.9 million people in it, and we’re moving around on a system that was designed decades ago. I’d like to see us expand those services and put people to work modernizing our transportation infrastructure.
Linda Stewart has been supporting the Dragon Parade Lunar New Year Festival for many years even before she was elected as the Florida House of Representatives
Asia Trend - What inspired you to run for public office? Rep. Linda Stewart - I was active in the community and found that creating partnerships with government entities helped to get things done. I started a local group, the Conway Community Council and worked closely with the City and County on projects in my community. Later, I ran for County Commissioner, serving for eight years in the largest district representing over 250,000 constituents. Today, I represent Florida’s District 47 which is the beating heart of Central Florida, and is one of the most economically diverse and productive areas in the state. It includes downtown Orlando, Winter Park, Conway, College Park, Baldwin Park and Audobon Park with limits extending all the way south from the 528 Beachline Expressway, to Aloma Avenue in north, Semoran Blvd to the east and Orange Blossom Trail and I-4 to the west. Asia Trend - What are some important things you have been working on as a member of the Florida House of Representatives? Rep. Linda Stewart - Being in Tallahassee gave me a new perspective on some of the problems I dealt with as a county commissioner,

but I have remained a strong advocate of local government, and was awarded a County Champion Award by the Florida Association of Counties for my work on environmental issues, as well as public health and safety problems that impact all of Florida’s 20 million residents and 100 million visitors. Economic development has also been a top priority of mine, and I was the only Democrat to have a tax cut pass the House last session. I have also worked with members of both parties to create high wage jobs here in Orlando by supporting a Digital and Film Tax Incentive Program to benefit FullSail University and the small independent studios in my district. I think some of the big issues looming for Central Florida is water. Not many people think about
Rep. Linda Stewart - The Dragon Parade at the Lunar New Year Festival has always been one of the most fun things I do every year, and it helps to showcase the number of vibrant, diverse communities that not many people outside of Orlando realize are here. I’ve also really enjoyed going to the Buddha’s Birthday Celebration at the Guang Ming Temple several times over the years. As for restaurants…Little Saigon, Chuan Lu Garden, and Ming Bistro (how many places serve fried chicken feet?!). Asia Trend - What would you say to inspire those who want to make their community a better place? Rep. Linda Stewart - Get involved, educate yourselves on your surroundings and participate in your community. Don’t ever be afraid to speak up.

In 1958, Momofuku Ando 安藤百福 invented instant noodles “Chikin Ramen” (chicken noodle soup) as the first instant ramen noodles. In 1970, Nissin 日清 formed the subsidiary Nissin Foods (USA) Co. Inc., to sell instant noodles in the United States. In 1978, Nissin Foods offered new Top Ramen and Cup Noodes varieties, pioneering new paths in the rapidly growing instant ramen noodle category. In 1998, Cup Noodles Hot Sauce Varieties introduced (Beef, Chicken, Shrimp). Instant noodles in Japan are often sold in foam bowls that are inexpensive, disposable, light, and easy to hold, since they insulate heat well. Different flavors are available in other parts of the

Asia Trend is now a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission of strengthening mutual understanding, creating effective channels of communication between Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans and promoting cultural performing arts through print and online magazine, multi-media, festivals and social networking. We cover Asian community events that you can hardly find in the mainstream media. We encourage interconnection and believe the benefits of diversity and inclusion.
Asia Trend Community Learning Center
We are pleased to announce Asia Trend Community Learning Center is underway. The center will be a resources center for the community with senior services, youth enrichment programs, cultural workshops, educational and health seminars. Asia Trend Community Learning Center is to educate, connect and engage the community about the history, cultures and emerging business opportunities of Asia through partnership.

APAC Assembly 2014: Legend of APAC Founded on March 25th, 2005, the Asian Pacific American Coalition at the University of Central Florida seeks to develop leadership, be a source of political and social advocacy for issues, promote unity and provide a voice for the Asian American student population on campus and the community at UCF. Today, APAC fulfills these mission statements through workshops, programs, and showcases open to the general student body and public. One of this year’s biggest events was the APAC Assembly 2014: Legend of APAC. APAC Assembly is an annual showcase of talents created by 10 of the Asian-interest student organizations on campus to welcome incoming freshmen and to promote “Unity” within the organizations. This year’s theme was APAC Assem-

From a traditional lion dance performed by the Chinese American Student Association to the comedic and very inspirational performance by guest performer Youtube sensation David So, APAC Assembly had a successful night bringing in over 600 people, not only from within the community but from other Universities throughout Florida as well.
As for the rest of the year, APAC continues to achieve their mission statement through its up and coming Mentor/Mentee program, Unity Warz, and the Level UP leadership conference in the spring. With the help and support of the community, APAC hopes to make these upcoming events just as successful as APAC Assembly. Participants come and learn about the various issues faced by AsianAmericans in an interactive forum.
The Association of Filipino Students engages participants in a cultural game during Taste of Asia.
7th Annual Journey to the East We, as Asian-Americans, often find ourselves lost in the American culture that we’ve all grown up with and sometimes can forget the culture of our own roots. It’s sad to see that many AsianAmericans today often are unaware of the ideals and values of their ancestors. As an AsianAmerican community, we should be unified and be a voice for ourselves to speak for we what we believe in. Because of these various factors, a group of motivated students at the University of South Florida decided to make a difference and to embark on a journey to the eastern side of the world, figuratively speaking, where our homeland lies. Thus, Journey to the East was born. Journey to the East, JE for short, is a weeklong event which showcases various aspects of Asian culture to the student body at the University of South Florida, as well as to the Tampa Bay community. Founded by three former USF students, Romel Pancho, Tony Mai, and Patrick Canezo, JE focuses on the theme of cultural education and unification of the community. JE is broken down into six events starting on Monday and ultimately ending with a banquet on Saturday. JE

is put together by a committee, which oversees and collaborates with ten organizations at USF. This year, JE starts on September 8th and the events are as follows: • Taste of Asia: showcases various ethnic food and drinks around Asia. • Harmonic Convergence: an interactive forum which focuses on issues that Asian-Americans face every day. • Light on Your Feet: showcases various cultural dances as well as educating the student body on how to perform them. • JE Showcase: performances from Asian organizations at USF. • Race Through Asia: a scavenger hunt which teaches the participants about cultural games and activities. • JE Banquet: filled with cultural performances from the Tampa Bay community, highlighted by a popular headliner and free cultural food are provided. We are able to gather sponsors from around the Tampa Bay area, restaurants that generous-

ly donated for banquet as well as some events throughout the week. We’ve gathered so much support over the years from the student body, family and friends of USF alumni, as well as the university itself. As proof, the attendance at this year’s banquet was estimated to be about 550 people. We ran out seats for everyone and had to add more tables, something that’s never happened before in previous years. We truly appreciate all the support that everyone has given us over the years because without them, this event would not and could not have happened and became as successful as it is. For the future, we hope to continue growing strong every single year and to continue spreading the message that JE originally aimed to do. We learned that as individuals in this world, we cannot do anything, but together we can accomplish the impossible. I end with a quote from a TV show, Avatar: the Legend of Korra. “When we reach our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.” * LIKE Journey to the East’s FB page for more photos: www.facebook.com/USFJourneytotheEast
