The Spirit of Achievement Award at Junior Achievement’s 2010 Mid-florida Business Hall of Fame Ceremony by Asia Trend Junior Achievement of Central Florida presented C.T. Hsu, FAIA, LEED AP, with the Spirit of Achievement Award at the 2010 Mid-Florida Business Hall of Fame ceremony at the Rosen Centre Hotel on November 11. According to the awards program guide: “With unwavering dedication, Mr. Hsu has significantly enhanced the quality of life in Central Florida and beyond as a dedicated community servant who has long supported the aims of Junior Achievement ‘to inspire and prepare young people to success in a global economy.’”
In his acceptance speech, Hsu said, “I think the lesson of my life’s journey is that with hard work and the support of a loving family, anyone – even an Asian immigrant – can be successful in America. It’s a lesson that Junior Achievement teaches every day; inspiring and empowering students to believe in themselves and make a difference in the world.” Hsu came to America from Taiwan in 1974 to pursue a Master of Architecture in Advanced Studies degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1984, he moved to Orlando and started C.T. Hsu + Associates.

Twenty years later, the firm was honored by the American Institute of Architects as Florida’s “Firm of the Year.” Mariah Roman, a 12th grader at Edgewater High School, presented Hsu with the award. In her introduction, she said, “What really amazes me is his dedication to help children in need. Almost 200,000 people have benefited from Mr. Hsu’s volunteer leadership, ranging from pre-kindergarten children to disabled adults. He has devoted more than 5,000 volunteer hours in the past decade in service to others.” In her remarks, Roman said, “Because of you, I value my education a lot more, and I realize it’s not necessarily how you start out but it’s your determination to succeed and give back to your community.”

On the night of Orlando Japan Festival 2010, we had a little gathering with Consul General of Japan, Namiki at Teppan Edo (by Mitsukoshi) in EPCOT Japan. We enjoyed Sushi, Tuna Ceviche, Teppanyaki, wine, Shochu, Sake cocktail, green tea flan and ginger chocolate cake as well as conversations with Mr. Namiki. After our dinner was the EPCOT fireworks showtime! It was the very first time for Mr. Namiki to watch the EPCOT fireworks.
It was such a beautiful night. Everyone relished the entire experience with Mr. Namiki including his friendliness and sense of humor. Consul General Namiki is promoted to be an ambassador after only 14 months of his duty in Miami. We don’t know which country he will be dispatched to yet, but I would like to extend our congratulations to his upcoming successful years.
Message from Consul General Namiki One year and two months ago, I arrived in Miami to begin my post as the eighth Consul General at the Consulate General of Japan in Miami. I expected to be here for a longer time, but I recently received a ministerial order that I was being called back to Japan to be given a new assignment. I am honored to serve my country and go where I am needed, but I face my upcoming departure with a slightly bittersweet feeling. I am excited for what is ahead of me, but I will miss the Sunshine State. This was my first time living and working in a primarily English speaking country.

My previous assignments have had me located in the Spanish speaking part of the world, so coming to Florida was a new experience for me.

Promoting Brotherhood and Service among Asian-Americans through Pi Delta Psi By Jodi Kiely
In 2001, the University of Central Florida’s Office of the President commissioned a report on the Status of Ethnic and Racial Minorities. The summary produced alarming findings: of all ethnic groups at UCF, Asian-Americans were the least satisfied with their college experience. At the time, Asian-Americans were battling the stereotype of being the “model minority” which viewed them as quiet, nerdy and lacking social skills. In response to this label, the university’s Asian-American student body united together to fight this image and redefine their role at UCF. It wasn’t until 2005, however, that wheels were set in motion to bring to campus a national fraternity created to promote “understanding between the various Asian cultures, build relations extending beyond the academic years and most importantly, finding and building an individual’s skill sets.” The fraternity was Pi Delta Psi which was founded nationally in 1994 at Binghamton University, State University of New York. The young men behind the campaign to bring the Pi Delta Psi Fraternity to UCF were ten men of diverse backgrounds including then UCF student and current Pi Delta Psi national marketing director Ricky Ly. “Our group of men, as well as the many cultural Jodi Kiely currently works as the development associate at Quest, Inc. where she manages several of the non-profit organization’s fundraising, communications and marketing projects. Quest’s mission is to build communities where people with disabilities achieve their goals, whether it is going to school, having a job, living independently or experiencing summer camp. Originally from Minnesota, Kiely is also a former Peace Corps volunteer and is active in several local organizations including the Central Florida Asian-American Chamber of Commerce. Her writing for Asia Trend Magazine is independent of her job and does not reflect the official views of her employer.

organizations at UCF, united together to combat this apathy and dissatisfaction on campus through cultural programming, networking, and incorporating leadership development into our activities,” he said. “We founded the UCF chapter of Pi Delta Psi because we wanted a stronger voice for Asian-Americans. We also felt we needed a stronger sense of brotherhood on campus.” After years of coordinating the effort to launch a Pi Delta Psi fraternity at UCF, Ly’s vision for the university’s Asian-American student body became a reality. In 2008, Ly’s senior year, it was made official: UCF became the fraternity’s 26th national chapter. Since then, the UCF organization has grown. According to Ly, the university now has 35 members and 17 active alumni including himself. The UCF members make up a portion of the 1,600 brothers nationwide. “One of the best things about the fraternity is the opportunity it gives us to give back to the community,” Ly said. “Pi Delta Psi has done everything from feeding the homeless to adopting a highway on Alafaya Trail. We also raised $2,000 for the 2008 earthquake victims in China,” he said. For him personally, Ly’s membership has extended beyond his college days. Now 25 and a civil engineer at Inwood Consulting Engineering in Oviedo, Ly continues to benefit from his Pi Delta Psi experiences. “Being a member of Pi Delta Psi has taught me many important lessons from time management, leadership, to never giving up no matter what obstacles are ahead. It has given me lifelong lessons as well as lifelong brotherhood for which I will forever be grateful. No matter where I go, I find brothers who I never even met before who open their hands and
hearts as friends.” Ly said he recently went to Hong Kong and met with eight alumni brothers who were working there for JP Morgan. He had dinner with them despite the fact that many he had never met before. “The connection became instant because of our common bond of brotherhood through Pi Delta Psi,” he said. As the national marketing director for the fraternity, Ly said his vision for the future of the organization is two-fold. For the UCF chapter, he wants to bring in more quality members while continuing to work with the Asian-American community. Nationally, he hopes to see Pi Delta Psi grow and partner with other national organizations with similar ideals. “I’d like to see Pi Delta Psi be the voice for AsianAmericans nationally and to continue the four ideals, also known as the four pillars, of the original founders: academic achievement, cultural awareness, righteousness and friendship and loyalty,” he said. When asked to share his personal “pillars” in the form of advice to young Asian-Americans, Ly said this: “Focus on school but have a balanced life with room for work, family and the community. As immigrants and children of immigrants to America, we have been given a world of opportunity and freedom. We have a responsibility to give back to our community and make it better than when we found it. The Fruit of Volunteerism By Izumi Sakurada These are reflections from few of dedicated volunteers: REACH members were glad to volunteer in the Orlando Japan Festival. We enjoyed good food, great performances and good bargain at the festival. We had a total of 12 REACH members and everyone did a great job in helping to set up the festival. I especially enjoyed the various performances such as the Taiko drums, different carnival games, and the scrumptious food. I was deeply impressed by the Taiko drum performance because it requires skillful communication, physical fitness and coordination among the drummers. Overall, I felt this Japanese festival had exceptional planning and organization which made this event a huge success. Leaders of Orlando Japan Festival were so kind and helpful and led by action. This festival provided a chance for REACH members to volunteer with friends, and learned new culture. REACH would like to continue to volunteer in this festival in future. Over 150 volunteers from local schools and groups participated at the annual Orlando Japan Festival 2010 on November 7th. With the perfect crisp Florida fall weather, the festival drew 3,500 attendants this year. We had enthusiastic volunteers from local middle school, high schools, college, youth group as well as parents and teachers from the Orlando Hoshuko ( former Orlando Japanese language school). As a local volunteer coordinator, I was very grateful for all participants who signed up in such a short notice and generously contributed their time at this year’s festival. The festival success was the fruit of perfect volunteerism!
My experience at the J-fest was truly fantastic. As soon as I got there, I felt like I was actually in Japan. With the Japanese food and culture around me, and the wonderfully talented Taiko drummers performing, it really put me in Japan. Everywhere I turned, friendly people were smiling at me. I felt welcomed immediately. I volunteered to preform traditional Japanese story telling, “Kamishibai”. I also participate to do face painting at Ennichi carnival area. It was so much fun to see all happy children’s faces after their faces was painted. The festival showed hospitality to their volunteers by offered free lunch! we had the choice of pizza or a soy sauce meat ball hot dog. They were both delicious! The entire fest was well organized and I truly had a fantastic time. I honestly will never forget it and all the interesting fun people I met at the festival. Our school, the Montessori School of Celebration, has been fortunate to join Mr. Takemasa and Mrs. Yuko Ishikura, Taiko instructors at our school, at the Japanese Festival for the last several years. Our students perform as part of the Hundreds Drums and it is always an exhilarating experience to see – and hear – them be part of this event. One of the core concepts in the Montessori philosophy that we go by at our school is the importance of creating opportunities for children to learn and experience cultures from around the world. As Dr. Maria Montessori said, “Establishing lasting peace is the work of education.” What better way to teach peace than to have authentic cultural experiences like the Japanese Festival, where children can enjoy, partake and celebrate the wonders of the Japanese culture. Heart of Florida Asian Festival Eight thousand people visited the Historic By Suzanna Mars Thomas Center in Gainesville on October 23 and 24 for the third annual Heart of Florida Asian Festival. This year marked the first time that the festival was held over a weekend, which allowed people who paid admission on FACSS fashion show Saturday to return on Sunday without paying a second time.

Since its beginning in 2008, the Heart of Florida Asian Festival has grown from a local into a regional attraction. This year, the greatly expanded event featured seven performing areas as well as the popular food court and exhibition areas.

The event kicked off with a colorful procession of nations and organizations that wound around the Thomas Center fountain. As is festival custom, the procession was led by the Celebrate Asia Dance Team from Jacksonville and the team’s brightly colored Chinese lion. Celebrate Asia was also the first group performing, when Liu, Li took the Live Oak stage with a traditional Mongolian dance. Bells sewn to the back of Ms. Liu’s bright red costume mimicked the sound of horse bells as the horses charged across the steppes of Mongolia. Following Ms. Liu on the Live Oak stage were the acclaimed SinoElite Acrobats from Orlando, who returned for a second year of daredevil acrobatics that included plate spinning, face changing, unicycle balancing, and a special dance from the Peking Opera. Indoors, Liang, a performer familiar to fans of America’s Got Talent, mesmerized the audience with her own brand of acrobatics, which includes a comedy routine by emcee Bill Patti. The Liang Acrobatic and Comedy Show has been with the Heart of Florida Asian Festival since its start and it continues to be a big draw. New to the festival in 2010 was the Bunraku Bay Puppet Troupe from the University of Missouri, which performed two selections from its repertoire in the Knight Amphitheatre. Bunraku is traditional Japanese puppetry that differs from Western puppetry by having the puppeteers visible to the audience. The puppeteers wore head-to-toe black as they manipulated the elaborate puppets in pieces designed for welcome and for celebration. Also in the Knight Amphitheatre was a demonstration of kyudo—Japanese archery—that rotated with the Bunraku performances over the two-day festival. Food is a big draw at the Heart of Florida event, and for 2010 the food court included firsttime vendors The Loving Hut, Radhika’s Café, and Maui Teriyaki alongside popular returning vendors Thai-American Food and Vongsay Enterprises. Festivalgoers ate samosas, vegan Thai spring rolls, chicken rice bowls, and Filipino lumpia while watching roving lion dance and Chinese yo-yo performances. Also in the food court was a skillful demonstration of the art of Kae-Sa-Luk, or fruit-carving, by master carver Pam Maneeratana.

The Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars provided a pantomime fashion show with musical accompaniment that was a surprise hit of the event, while a talented member of the Japanese Club drew caricatures and the Turkish Student Association exhibited native textiles and pottery. The City of Gainesville collaborated with the Harn Museum for the gallery exhibition “Tokaido Road Tales,” which was displayed in the Thomas Center Gallery. The gallery is a little-known gem of an exhibition space that sits to the rear of the Spanish Court and which during the Heart of Florida Asian Festival has Asian artwork on display. The collaboration was a year in the making and was curated by Jason Steuber, the Harn’s Cofrin Curator of Asian Art. Festival director David Ballard, who created the event three years ago with a one-time grant from the Smithsonian Institution, felt the time was right to take the event from one to two days. “We had a great response in 2008 and 2009 with a one-day event, so anticipating that the festival was going to grow, going to two days was the obvious choice.” Plans for the 2011 festival, also a two-day event, are already underway, Ballard says. “We hope to keep expanding the festival’s profile as a major regional attraction that will also appeal to the tourist market.” Tourism potential is an essential component of the festival’s funding, Ballard notes, so its marketing outreach extends far beyond its Alachua County home. Out-of-county and out-of-state visitor numbers were impressive for the 2010 event and this number is expected to grow in the future. The Heart of Florida Asian Festival is produced by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the department that is also responsible for the Downtown Festival and Art Show and the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire.

Western han scholar Dong Zhongshu, in his tome Chun Qiu Fan Lu, or Luxuriant Dew of the Spring and Autumn Annals, wrote about the importance of harmony between heaven and humans and how any deviation would violate that. Humans have 365 minor bones, matching the 365 days in a year, and 12 major ones, matching the 12 months of the year. Our skin is like the earth’s surface, while our blood vessels are like the rivers, oceans and mountains. Our happiness is like a summer day, anger a cloudy day or autumn, joy like spring, sorrow like winter. The body’s wu zhang, or five major organs, relate to the wu xin, or the five elements, while our limbs match the four seasons. This systematic wisdom handed down by the ancients means that fung shui is neither superficial nor superstitious. The concept of yin and yang is also embedded in our lives. We wake up in the morning, when the yang is predominant, and we go to sleep
when the yin suffuses the air. Women represent yin and men yang, just as the sky is yang and the earth is yin. Based on this knowledge, the ancient Chinese were able to devise predictive tools to conquer the unknown. They knew that unkind energy is often the result of a violation of the cosmic or natural law, while kind energy flows from the natural order of things. Put simply, auspicious events result when energy is flowing naturally, while inauspicious events occur when there is a violation of the natural law or a disruption in the interaction between humans and heaven. That is why the Chinese emphasize filial piety, because it means not just respect for the elderly but also respect for mother nature and a world that gives us life and energy. Thought of the month: Use every moment to think the purest thought, say the kindest word and do the noblest deed.
Tao the Eternal Line Tao is variously defined as the way, the path, the truth, reason or moral order.
Likewise, humans and all living beings must not act against the Tao of Heaven by destroying the environment that we live in.
However, Lao Tzu says the Tao that can be given a name is not the eternal Tao. Also, such a name, if given, is not the eternal or everlasting name for Tao.
The Tao of Humans requires us to mimic the heavenly law of Tao by trusting naturally.
Try this on for size: once we ascribe a name to, let’s say, a cup, then everything else is “not-a-cup!” We are required to see things with the heart and not merely with our eyes. The teachings of Tao will eventually lead us to love and do things in accordance with the natural way. Han dynasty scholar Dong Zhongshu used the term Unification of Tian (heaven) and Ren (human) to describe the natural movements of planets. He said the universe and Earth’s very structure embodies the principle that all humans are meant to co-exist harmoniously.
Confucius’ teachings say the Tao of Humans is reflected in the five virtues of benevolence, justice, rituals, knowledge and trustworthiness. In other words, this “path” shows the way to following the spirit of righteousness and filial piety. Chinese metaphysics is based on such principles and parameters to help human beings function properly and morally. The responsibility lies with the practitioners of Tao, as success in promoting the ancient arts will only be as much as they allow it to be. Thought of the month: Nobody can go back and start again, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
The sun rises every morning to wake us up and provide life-giving sunlight to all beings. The moon rises on time each night, signaling a time of rest. The sun will not rise in the west and set in the east, neither will the moon change its course. They are not temperamental and will never be late. The ancient Chinese interpreted this as trust and called it the Tao of Heaven.

Unveiled an Image of The Moon

On November 8th, 2010, the Chinese State Administration of Science - Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) released photos of the Moon’s Sinus Iridum, or Bay of Rainbows, marking a significant accomplishment for China’s second lunar probe mission. The photos were taken by a charge-coupled device camera aboard the Chang’e-2 lunar probe, the successor to the Chang’e-1 which was launched in October 2007, both of which are named after a legendary Chinese moon goddess. The area captured in the photos has been proposed as the landing ground for future Moon missions. Upon completion of the Chang’e-2’s six-month mission, the probe will either (1) be crashed into the moon, (2) be released into outer space, and (3) return to Earth.

This is a computing speed that is 1.425 times faster than the Jaguar. Dr. Nobert Attig, the Head of the Application Support Division in the Juelich Supercomputing Center has indicated that this is a great success for China. The Tianhe-1A architecture is based on graphics processing units or GPUs, and the supercomputer is expected to play a key role in oil exploration, and aviation and aerospace research. Dr Attig, says once the World masters the technology to build supercomputers, the remaining challenge will be to apply the systems efficiently. The supercomputers will need to effectively maintain their programming capability as their applications widen while at the same time reduce power consumption to a reasonable level.

The Code of Life Scientists have already deciphered the code of life by unlocking the secret of human DNA. From a Buddhist perspective, the code of life or DNA has another name—karma. The Buddha taught the world about it more than 2,500 years ago. If DNA is interpreted as a unit, as in a cell, it is not enough to explain life; it is not all encompassing. Karma is the more comprehensive explanation. Karma is the action of the body, speech, and mind. There is wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral karma. “Even going through thousands of kalpas, the karma created never dies.” All the karma generated by the body, speech, and mind will be stored in the warehouse of karma, the way a computer stores information. “When the causes and conditions are right, karmic retribution will be expe-

rienced by the self.” The law of karma is immutable. What goes around comes around—it may ripen tomorrow, next month, or many years from now, but it is inevitable. The karmic retribution of cause and effect never fails. Karmic power is one of the Buddha’s great realizations. Humans live from previous lives to the current one, and then carry on to future lives. The crucial link is karmic power, which strings the ongoing lives together like a rope. Nothing is missing; nothing is lost. Because of karma, life never ends. “Water from the spring rains flows along toward the east.” Similarly, the seasons change with time, spring comes and fall goes, and along with them, the warm weather and the cool breezes. Everything comes and goes in cycles and is reborn. Any conditioned dharmas can be destroyed, but only the code of life is indestructible and exists infinitely. DNA can only depict the components of an individual life. But, according to Buddhism, there is not

So, karma always manifests itself; it is just a matter of time. The truths of causes and conditions, karma, and karmic retribution in Buddhism are the absolute truths. These truths are absolute, universal, and equal for all. The discovery of DNA by scientists only serves to explain the content and function of karma more comprehensively. A separate “internal” award (for current members or directors), the President’s Leadership Award, was bestowed upon Nina Yon, AACC’s Vice President of Internal Affairs. While dining on mahi-mahi in lemon sauce, chicken and a trio of desserts, guests were treated to a 15-minute highlight presentation of “The Nutcracker” by the Orlando Ballet. The five ballet dancers showcased the talents of some of Orlando Ballet’s most accomplished performers, including Chiaki Yasukawa (from Osaka, Japan, and in her tenth year with Orlando Ballet); Sohee Bae and A reum Chung (both from Seoul, Korea, and starting their fourth year in Orlando); Brandon Nguyen (from Fort Worth, Texas and in his third year with the company) and Daniel Benevides (from Anaheim, California, and beginning his fifth year with Orlando Ballet). Earlier in the evening, Chamber members and guests were also entertained by Indian dancers from the Vashnie Dance Academy; an eightmember Asian musician ensemble from REACH (www.reachocf.org); and two lion dances from Sifu Charles’ Lion Dance Team. VIP guests included Orlando Commissioner Robert Stuart; Marcia Hope Goodwin, Director of the City of Orlando’s Community Affairs; U.S. Ambassador Harriet L. Elam-Thomas; actor Philip Michael Thomas (Detective Tubbs in “Miami Vice”); and other dignitaries. “With the success of our first Golden Dragon Awards, we are already planning an even more spectacular awards ceremony for next October,” said Glenn Leong, President of the Chamber. “Our goal is to make these Awards our signature event every year. The REACH Ensemble is a group that is comprised of distinguished and talented young musicians in Central Florida. They not only actively participate in High School Orchestras, but they also audition for the Florida All-County and AllState Orchestras. Many of them are also members of the renowned Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and are holding leading positions such as being a concertmaster, a principal and an assistant principal. Now, playing Asian music is their new challenge since there are a limited amount of music scores. To solve this challenge, some of the musicians watched music videos on YouTube repetitively for an understanding of the melody and have started to rearrange the music by just listening to the music on YouTube. Members of the REACH ensemble always improvise to make their music sound more musical. REACH Ensemble played at the AACC Golden Dragon Award on Nov 19, 2010 and here are some reflections from REACH Ensemble members: It is a real honor and pleasure to be the Ensemble Director of the REACH program. I have arranged and composed many Asian styled songs, and through this program, we have many opportunities to share the Asian cultural heritage with the community through music. One of the events we were privileged to participate in was the AACC Golden Dragon Awards. We are fortunate to have many talented young musicians to represent our Asian heritage, who also represent the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, and were able to successfully present our cultural music and supported other Asian organizations. We are improving our library and skills daily, and are ready to further spread our Asian cultural heritage with our community through our musical performances – Koichi Kanaoka, Ensemble Director of REACH
I decided to join a small ensemble of REACH members to play at the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. At first, I thought it’d be like any other ensemble- but boy was I wrong! We all dressed in cultural clothing to represent our respective countries. Since I’m from Korea, I wore my hanbok. All the Asian countries we were representing came together harmoniously to produce traditional Asianesque music. All our differences were placed aside we came together to play as a united force and lead the lion into a banquet hall. REACH has helped me realize that I’m not only a Korean- American, but I’m an Asian- American as well. - Hye Jun Lee The REACH Ensemble practiced Asian pieces a few times after school. My favorite part of being in the REACH Ensemble was when I played General Mandate with the Dancing Lion. I liked this performance experience as it was nice to perform in front of many business men and women. When I play in an Orchestra, the conductor usually leads the musicians but when I was in the Ensemble, we had to listen and work with each other more. This was a great experience. – Frank Lau

China Eastern Airlines, British jet engine-maker Rolls-Royce strike $1.2 bln deal BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines and British jet engine-maker Rolls-Royce inked a 1.2 billion U.S. dollar deal on Nov 9. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron witnessed the signing of the contract. According to the agreement, Rolls-Royce will sell China Eastern Airlines engines for 16 Airbus-330-200 jets. It also agreed to provide oil consumption-minimization systems to China Eastern.

Electric, hybrid car be subsidy in Beijing Beijing will promote the use of 30,000 electric and hybrid cars, build 100 recharging stations and provide 36,000 rechargers by the end of 2012, People’s Daily reported Monday, citing the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. A pilot subsidy plan for individuals’ purchases of new energy vehicles that was prepared by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and Finance Bureau of Beijing was approved by an experts’ panel on Nov 28. The plan said the municipal government will give subsidies to individuals who buy new energy vehicles, and set a target at 23,000 electric vehicles and 7,000 hybrid vehicles by the end of 2012. The subsidies were based on the cost of providing battery power to the cars, which is about $450 per kilowatt-hour. The buyer will receive a subsidy of up to $900 for one electric vehicle, or up to $7,500 for one hybrid vehicle. The capital city will build a transformer substation and a transport management digital system for new energy vehicles.

The meat sizzled on the iron plates in front of us, smoke rising into the vents above the tiny house. The bulgogi and kalbi marinated meats hissed and crackled as the flames flickered below the grills. The smell of Korean barbeque is always intoxicating, especially if you are eating at Shin Jung. Shin Jung Korean restaurants sits on Colonial Drive just west of Bumby Avenue in a little house-like structure with a green roof. The dining area is tiny, maybe less than 40 people can fit in here at one time. The entire building smelled the wonderful aroma of delicious food cooking.

An average meal here averages about $20 and up, a bit pricey considering that you only get one complementary bowl of korean rice, but its enough to get full. Definitely come with friends though as it takes at least 4 people to make the meal worth it. Our party orders the traditional dishes: soon tofu, a spicy tofu style soup and one of my favorites here at Shin Jung, kimchijigae, a kimchi spicy soup, seafood pancake, bulgogi and kalbi. Our meal is served with tiny dishes of pickled cucumbers, cabbage, bean sprouts, anchovies, and other delectable appetizing items. Amidst the large oak trees and the rustic looking southern Spanish moss at Bloxham and Lewis parks, Experience Asia 2010, the 6th Annual Asian Festival captivated the hearts of residents of Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee. Hosted by the Asian Coalition of Tallahassee (ACT), this festival has achieved a meteoric rise in just a very short period of time. Although this was what ACT envisioned it to be, none of the organizers expected to achieve this in a very short period of time. It has become the 3rd largest event in Tallahassee attracting participants from out of town and even international performers. An estimated 16,000 people came to the festival this year. Experience Asia has become a marquee event exhibiting the diversity in Asian cultures of China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Talented performers providing non–stop cultural performances and demonstrations wowed the crowd keeping them on their feet. Amazing performances include Thai dancers with their intricate hand and feet movement, a variety of mid-eastern belly dancing, a wide array of Filipino cultural dances depicting its eastern and western roots, colorful and beautiful Indonesian and Balinese dances, Japanese cultural dances, and an Indian musical group. And that was just on the first stage. Across the street, a variety of martial arts demonstrations were performed, both hard and soft, such as Filipino martial arts, Chinese martial Arts, Okinawan martial arts, the Korean Tae Kwon Do, the Japanese Naginata, the Taoist Tai Chi, and Falun Gong. Never was there a slack moment between the two stages. Of course, the best of Asian cuisines were also sold to satisfy the urge for a variety of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Thai and Indian foods. Exhibitors and vendors sold a sundry of items: from jewelries and Indian saris, to handmade
Asian arts and crafts while others were painting Chinese calligraphy and making Japanese origami. More than 300 Girl scouts came to learn more about the various countries. And in light of the upcoming election, politicians running for office set up booths to sway voters and promote voter turnout. Crews from ABC-WTXL Channel 27, a major sponsor of the event were busy videotaping the festivities while its very own Casanova Nurse served as an emcee at the main stage. At noon, the ceremony opened with a bang. Chinese dragon and lion dance performers graced the stage with their acrobatic moves, gyrating with the sound of the drums. This was followed by the beautiful Thai dancers with their peace offering ceremony/dance. Opening remarks were delivered by yours truly, Japanese Deputy Consul-General Yasushi Sato, Ms Jane Marks, the ACT Honorary Chairperson, and her husband, Mayor John Marks. The Japanese Matsuriza Taiko Drummers, the featured performer from Orlando followed the ceremony with their awesome performance using an array of drums. The sound of the drums reverberated throughout the parks keeping the energy levels high.

The festival was a blast! Like a magical moment at the park, it lasted as quickly as it started. Experience Asia has changed the landscape of the capital city culturally. Locals are now aware of the growing Asian community and the mixed Asian cultures that exist in the city. Experience Asia has become a place for the whole community to share in the delight of the local diversity.
