Zodiac Forecast for Year of the Tiger
T
he Chinese Zodiac consists of a 12-year cycle, each year of which is named after a different animal that imparts distinct characteristics to its year. Many Chinese believe that the year of a person’s birth is the primary factor in determining that person’s personality traits, physical and mental attributes and degree of success and happiness throughout his or her lifetime. It also shows your compatibility with people of the other signs.

10,000 Buddhas Monastery, Hong Kong By Gary Lau Gary Lau
To get a sense of the tower’s size, remember the statues are all life-sized. Rows upon rows of Buddhas
An exterior shot of one of the pavilons, a temple.
The Monastery of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Shatin, Hong Kong. Are there really 10,000 Buddhas at this Monastery? Surely such a thing isn’t possible?” Well, I discovered it is possible. Here’s a little history lesson about the Monastery: Built in 1957 by Reverend Yuet Kai and his disciples, the Monastery of Ten Thousand Buddhas took eight years to complete. It took an additional ten years to make the 10,000 plus gold plated ceramic Buddha statues that adorn the interior walls.
Inside the temple are thousands of miniature gold-plated Buddha’s statues (10,000!!).
Getting to the Monastery is either extremely hard or easy depending on your point of view. To reach the top you need to follow a path of 400 steps. Once you reach the main path you’re greeted by thousands of Buddhas. No, these aren’t the 10,000 Buddhas, those are at the top. These statues are life-sized, painted gold, and every one of them has a distinctive appearance. It’s really quite amazing actually. Thousands of statues that all look different. All have different poses and expressions. Some are carrying props, some aren’t. I found myself stopping every couple feet to take photos of the different ones I saw. It was tiring, but rewarding. Once your travels of the 400 steps has ended and you reach the top, you’re rewarded with this beautiful courtyard. There are two levels to the Monastery; this is the first. The lower level is made up of a pagoda, two pavilions and a tower.

Spotlight on Hepatitis Prevention Programs at the Orange County Health Department In June 2007, the Orange County Health Department (OCHD) was awarded funds from the Florida Hepatitis and Liver Failure Prevention and Control Program to begin a comprehensive hepatitis prevention program. This program is located within the OCHD’s Epidemiology Department. The Hepatitis Prevention Program’s services include: providing hepatitis education and
screening, hepatitis A and B vaccinations, counseling, and referrals for follow-up care of high-risk individuals.
Services provided through the Hepatitis Prevention Program are not for international travel, employee health, or persons under the age of 18. Through this program, OCHD is collaborating with community agencies that serve those at risk to provide free hepatitis testing and hepatitis A and B vaccines. The health department also provides referrals for treatment for those diagnosed with hepatitis and participates in outreach activities, including community health fairs that target at-risk communities. Testing and vaccinations for hepatitis are offered, by appointment, for people at risk for infection. Interested persons should call Lori Theisen at 407-858-1400 X 1135 to make an appointment.
woman already has hepatitis B, the baby can be protected from developing the disease if a schedule of preventive shots is followed. This includes: hepatitis B vaccine and the hepatitis B immune globulin within the first 12 hours of life, 2 additional doses of the vaccine during the first 6 months, and a follow-up blood test at 9 months to ensure protection was established. Your doctor should make arrangements to have the proper medications in the delivery room to prevent your newborn from becoming infected with the hepatitis B virus. This is important because chronic hepatitis B infection occurs in 90% of newborn infants infected at birth. However, if babies get the appropriate shots, they have a 95% chance of being safe from hepatitis B for life.
Another initiative is the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program which strives to prevent the transmission of hepatitis B to newborns. All pregnant women should be tested for the hepatitis B virus because the virus can be passed on to newborns during delivery. If a

Estate Equalization
for the family business owner
Your Legacy, Their Opportunity Passing the family business to one’s children can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding events of a business owner’s life. When all children are equally involved in the family business, planning their inheritance can be fairly straightforward. But what happens when one or more children have chosen other careers and do not participate in the family business? To ensure an equal inheritance for all their children, traditionally, many business owners choose to utilize life insurance as a vehicle to provide for all children equally. When Is Equal Not Necessarily Fair? While this technique certainly affords equal treatment for all heirs, how fair is it? • Those children who will inherit the business may have invested years of time and effort and have likely assumed significant business risk in exchange for their rights to the income generated by the business. • On the other hand, children who receive lump sum life insurance proceeds will be able to enjoy immediate access to a large amount of cash without investing time or effort in the business or incurring any business risk. Is this fair? An Alternative Solution from MetLife Instead of passing a large lump sum of cash to the child not inheriting the business, consider providing a lifetime income they can’t outlive—guaranteed. MetLife’s Guaranteed Survivor Income Benefit (GSIB) is an optional rider available on certain life insurance policies issued by MetLife companies for an additional charge. It provides beneficiaries with the opportunity to elect to receive a guaranteed lifetime income that is higher than they would otherwise be eligible for. • You control the payout terms—either lump sum, monthly lifetime income or a combination of the two. • You determine the income amount you want your beneficiary to receive. • You have the option to increase the income your beneficiary receives each year to adjust for inflation. Deciding to protect those who depend on us with a sufficient amount of life insurance protection is a responsible and caring act. Life insurance can provide those who are left behind with a lifetime of financial security. To find out more about how the GSIB can enhance your life insurance planning, talk to your representative. How does it work? Here’s an example: 1. Consult with your attorney regarding business succession options available to you. 2. Determine the value of your business that you will pass to some of your children. 3. Determine how much of a monthly income will represent a fair compensation for the child(ren) who will not inherit the business.

The Committee of 100 and World Expo 2010
“The Chinese In America—we Are Family”: Committee’s Expo Project Launches Online
By Jane Leung Larson
Anyone of Chinese descent in America may upload their photo and join the “The Chinese in America” wall at the USA Pavilion in the World Expo. “The exhibit will demonstrate America’s unique strengths as a nation: embracing diversity, offering freedom of choice and an opportunity for success for all,” said C-100 Governor Shirley Young, who is leading the Committee’s efforts to promote Chinese American participation in the World Expo.

The Committee of 100 has created this showcase so that Chinese in America can display pride in their heritage and families to the 70 million projected visitors to the World Expo in Shanghai, which opens May 1 and runs for six months. Thousands of Chinese American faces, organized by Chinese family names, will demonstrate to the world that “We are Family.”
are also helping the Committee develop a promotion campaign that will include social networking. For the Committee, Young and film producer Julie Fong have been heavily involved in planning the exhibits, along with C-100 staff. Launched on January 15, the website, www.jointhewall.org, makes it easy to participate in the Expo exhibit. Select a close-up photo of yourself on your computer to upload and follow the instructions on the site to create your entry. You’ll be prompted for your Chinese family name and your city and state of residence, which will be displayed with your photo. You’ll have a chance to make a contribution to build the wall and support the USA Pavilion, but there is no charge for joining the wall. Master Builders are
Many Committee members and friends have helped move the USA Pavilion exhibit to completion. On the West Coast, C-100 Vice Chair Stewart Kwoh, Lily Lee Chen, Andrew Cherng, Dominic Ng, Herman Li, Donald Tang, Dennis Wu, and Jack Fong have been active. East West Bank through CEO Ng has offered branch offices as a convenient place where those who aren’t computer-savvy can be assisted with submitting photos. Chen has recruited Los Angeles community groups to collaborate on the project. On the East Coast, Clarence Kwan, Henry Tang, and C-100 Executive Director Angie Tang, along with Fred Teng and Joe Lam, are working on outreach and fundraising. The World Journal and Singtao newspapers will promote the “Chinese in America” wall and provide a link to the website. There has already been considerable coverage of the exhibit in the Chinese language media.

A Pioneers Wall will portray Chinese Americans of exemplary achievement, including C-100 members David Ho, Yo-Yo Ma and I.M. Pei. Taste of Asia
Asian Grill & Buffet 198 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando, FL 32807 407-382-6988
Chopsticks Not Required,
Only Good Taste
Have you ever decided on a leisurely day off to just stroll into the closest Asian grill-buffet and smell what’s cooking? Maybe seeing the tidy rows of appetizers, freshly rolled sushi and thick slices of meat prompted you to lay down a meal. Or maybe you came in with family, led by kids hungry enough to chew the countertops, and found the spacious booths and discreet, low-key atmosphere even more appealing than food. However it went, you had an unexpectedly good time. And now you need to save the address of that restaurant on your GPS. Well, for the conveniently forgetful, I’m pretty sure the place you’re talking about is the Asian Grill & Buffet on 198 S. Semoran Blvd. in Orlando. You can’t miss the colorful flags out front, but what’s remarkable about the restaurant is, naturally, on the inside. The theme is fusion: Chinese, Japanese, and American chow, displayed on aisles upon aisles, deliciously enticing. The stir-fry casseroles, the surprisingly authentic pizza, can you say mass appeal? There’s hardly a need to mention the five different types of soup in covered, heated pots, the leafy salad bar, an extensive pastry & fruit dessert

aisle, and unusually well stocked ice cream corner. It’s really the dip and utensils we should discuss: they have their own separate area! Nothing annoys a hungry customer more than having to ask the waiter, no matter how pleasant he or she is, for an extra fork or bottle of soy sauce. That’s not an issue here, as all the chopsticks, condiments, shell removers etc. are set out more or less together, in easy reach (you need the shell removers for snow crab, served at dinner only). My faith in humanity soars. This restaurant redefines the boundaries of all-you-can-eat. Superior organization and development goes without saying once you see how they incorporated the Sushi Bar, where a professional chef rolls ‘em fresh in front of your eyes; the Habachi Grill, where you put together LoMein bowls from an assortment of raw noodles, veggies, and meats and watch them prepared to your specifications by a cook manning the stove; and the Meathouse, where portions of steak, sausage, pork chops, and roasted BBQ ribs are carved by your request. Tips for the servers are appreciated. There’s even an unobtrusive wine bar near the en-

trance, with soft disco-colored lights reflecting off the polished glasses. Is any of this jogging a memory? If not, then you obviously haven’t been to the Asian Grill & Buffet yet. My family and I lunched there last month, so maybe a personal account will shed more light on the experience. A fish tank accentuates the foyer. Seats are arranged with ample space between tables and booths, and further complemented by wood and glass paneling for a decorative veneer of privacy. There is even a large, enclosed room for parties and special guests tucked to the side. A deep, rich red, like crushed berries, makes up the color scheme. I heard on weekends and special occasions a local Mexican band plays on the open floor by the bar. There is a flat screen television hanging near the entrance, mutely broadcasting a sports game. It is early in January, so Christmas lights are still wrapped around a couple stone pillars. I am sitting in a booth, duly impressed by how clean and comfortable it is, sipping tea from a coffee mug, and bobbing my head to the contemporary k-pop and Chinese ballads floating over the speakers. It’s the first restaurant I’ve been to that
plays my favorite songs. We take turns getting food, since someone has to supervise my brother at the table. My mother tries pretty much every dish, Dad walks back proudly with a huge bowl of spicy LoMein, and my brother brings back at least eight beef kabobs and a brownie on the same plate. I raid the sushi bar. Then we dig in, and put off calling for the check until many platters later. The owner is very nice, casually but appropriately dressed, and he tells us to come again soon. My hands are very sticky on the ride home, because I forgot to make a trip to the restroom. It was a fantastic meal. Is your stomach gurgling now? Are you tempted yet? Newcomers, old-timers, here’s an idea: Valentines Day and Chinese New Year fall on the same day this year, and it’s coming up. Is anyone up for musical accompaniment during that special dinner, with Mexican flair? You know where to go. Leave your life savings, bring your appetite. Taiwan earns international respect for relief efforts in Haiti
After a devastating earthquake struck Haiti on January 12 and caused severe loss of life and property on the Caribbean island, Taiwan’s official and private organizations immediately joined in disaster relief efforts. To date, five relief and medical teams from Taiwan have already been dispatched to Haiti. The ROC government has also donated US$5 million in aid, and set up a special donation account that has received over US$300,000 in public donations. In addition to monetary aid, Taiwan has sent nearly 100 tonnes of emergency medical supplies, food and relief materials through international cargo shipments and air force transport planes to the neighboring Dominican Republic.
These supplies will then be transported via road to Haiti and distributed to victims in coordination with Food For The Poor and other international charity organizations. During his visit with allies in Central America that began January 25, President Ma Ying-jeou also brought 10 tonnes of relief supplies on a chartered flight. As the most pressing need on the earthquake-ravaged island is currently medical care, Taiwan on January 26 dispatched 10 more medical personnel with the Taiwan International Health Action organization to provide Haitians with emergency medical attention. Taiwan’s active participation in quake-relief
efforts in Haiti has been praised in The Wall Street Journal Asia and the online version of Time magazine. These reports pointed out that while Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations or the World Health Organization, Taiwan’s humanitarian aid is no less than those of any of the member countries. Community Service
By Robert Chung
greater insight was participating with the Green Team, an organization that promotes recycling to tailgaters during the football season. Through volunteering with the Green Team, I filtered out contaminates in recycling bags and removed recyclables from trash cans. Despite the dirty task, it is really enjoyable and showed me how much food we waste; trays of food, not fully consumed and even unopened beverages are thrown out at each game.
Community service is a way of giving back to the community where we create a better future for ourselves and future generations. As citizens of our community, we should all engage in service to do our part, despite our busy schedules. When I was little, I started doing community service without even realizing it. My mother brought me to the Coalition for the Homeless to help out with the soup kitchen as a part of a Tzu Chi event. Even though I was young, I still managed to contribute. I helped fill cups with drinks and served them to people in need. Even though it was an easy task, my contribution really helped. This proves that everybody is capable of making a difference. At the time, I did not really understand the impact I would make. Now that I look back, my mother was just doing her job. She guided me to the right path; showing me that I should help others in need and to show me the many facets of the world. And that is how I began. So why do people do community service? How do they start? Some people start doing community service purely to fulfill certain school requirements like for magnet programs and scholarships. The purpose of these requirements is to invoke compassion and to figure out what type of community service you enjoy. The ultimate goal of these requirements is for you to do community

service with your own will and to help others. I once told a friend that I was participating in a program where I mentored an elementary school student. My friend then asked me, “What class is it for?” Personally, I was insulted. I volunteered because I wanted to make a difference. Not everything involves schools and resumes. I strongly recommend that everyone should engage in community service because of the many benefits everyone receives from it. Sometimes a simple skill can make a big difference. One skill I have is knowing how to play the Chinese Yo-Yo. Therefore, I taught Chinese Yo-Yo at Chinese School for a few years. While teaching, I developed leadership skills as well as insight into the difficulties of teaching. Before performing Chinese Yo-Yo at my high school, I had never performed Chinese Yo-Yo. With this volunteering opportunity, I became significantly better at Chinese Yo-Yo, allowing me to perform at other events to help spread Chinese culture and to bring smiles to people’s faces. Through my Chinese Yo-Yo activities, I got a feeling of accomplishment; accomplishing the challenge of performing in front of large audiences. I was helping others and gaining something without even realizing it.
While volunteering benefits yourself and others, you might have excuses for not doing community service. Universities and employers are looking for well rounded candidates. Saying you do not have time is not a valid excuse. You can easily create time for community service. There are 365 days in a year. Choose one of those days and take a few hours to help out in the community. Treat the opportunity as exercise; a time to relax and de-stress. We all need some fresh air sometimes. Community service can also be done overseas. I personally volunteered for the AID Program to teach English to underprivileged children in rural parts of Taiwan. From this opportunity, I was giving back to my cultural roots and at the same time learning about cultural differences. Through observations of cultural differences and differences in living standards in rural areas in Taiwan, I could see how much I have and how much they do not have; allowing me to appreciate more of what I have. You can easily help non-profit organizations depending on their needs. You can express your talent at cultural events or celebrations through dance or music. You could teach a kid a new skill like the Rubik’s cube, or perform a skit that is fun and entertaining. It is a great way to get to know your friends better and to make new friends. Another activity you could do is donating blood. Just take an hour of your day and help save someone’s life. Donating money is also a welcomed way to help out. Most donations are tax deductable creating a win-win situation for all. Just give a little, and you will get so much more.

TET Festival 2010 Tết, the Lunar New Year, marks the beginning of spring and is the most observed holiday within the Vietnamese community. As a means to preserve culture, the Vietnamese American community in Orlando celebrates Tết every year through a vibrant array of traditional foods, ceremonies, and customs. The TET Festival, organized by the Vietnamese Community of Central Florida, took place on Jan 23 & 24 this year at the Central Florida Fairgrounds, Orlando. The opening ceremony started with singing the Republic of Vietnam national anthem, and the US national anthem, followed by the moment of memorial. Throughout the Festival, the attendants not only had a chance to taste various kinds of authentic Vietnamese food from North, Central, and South, but also were entertained by the Lion Dance performance, fire crackers, music show, Vovinam Kung Fu show, fashion show and Miss Ao Dai 2010 Pageants on Sunday.

Tzu Chi Foundation Orlando Division hosted its 2009 Year End Appreciation and Blessing ceremony event for over 100 members and relatives on Jan 16th, 2010. Tzu Chi members kicked off the event by sharing their volunteering experiences in the past year. After that, a video about Tzu Chi Haiti earthquake disaster relief activities was shown. Another highlight was the money donation through the Bamboo tube. At the end, all guests were offered a Red envelope for new luck and peach for the upcoming year. The event was ended with a prayer for world peace. Tzu Chi Foundation was established in 1966 by Venerable Dharma Master Cheng Yen. For over 44 years, the foundation has been contributing to better social and community services, medical care, education and humanism around the world. From the first 30 members, housewives who saved two cents from their grocery money each day to help the poor, the foundation has grown to over five million members in 47 countries.
