Experience the Chinese Renaissance, Through Dance at Straz Center Have you heard of the China known as “The Land of the Divine?” Ancient myths and legends throughout history record that the Middle Kingdom was continually guided by celestial beings. Traditional Chinese culture attributes all aspects of its civilization to the heavens, including its script, medicine, attire, music, and classical Chinese dance. It is this tradition of divinely inspired culture that Shen Yun Performing Arts will be presenting in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa this Spring. Shen Yun has toured the world for five seasons,

sharing the beauty of this lost culture through classical Chinese dance. Classical Chinese dance is one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. Dynasty after dynasty, it was passed down among the people, in imperial palaces and ancient plays. Thousands of years have refined it into a distinctive dance system embodying traditional aesthetics. One of the strengths of classical Chinese dance is its expressivity. It can vividly depict a wide range of emotions and portray any cherished virtue—righteousness, loyalty, benevolence, and tolerance. It can be masculine and vigorous, soft and graceful, somber and stirring, playful and humorous. Such range is achieved through bearing and form. Bearing describes the physical expression of one’s inner spirit. Spirit leads to movement, thus bearing leads to form. Form refers to Chinese dance’s external appearance—hundreds of unique movements and postures. An accomplished performer makes them appear effortless, but they require a perfect coordination of the entire body that takes years of rigorous training. A dancer’s every cell—from toes to fingertips, from the angle of the head to the direction of the gaze—must be in perfect harmony. Classical Chinese dance also has an extensive array of techniques— jumps, spins, flips, aerials and other very difficult tumbling moves. These supplement and enhance the dance’s expressive powers while adding vigorous physicality. And yet, classical Chinese dance is still mostly unfamiliar to the West. But that is quickly changing. Shen Yun is the world’s premier Chinese music and dance company; promoting an authentic form of

classical Chinese dance is part of its mission. Based in New York, Shen Yun is very different from companies coming out of China. With 5,000 years of civilization to draw from, Shen Yun has plenty of source material. Through dance, Terracotta Warriors awaken from the dust, the Song Dynasty general Yue Fei comes to life, Monkey King and Pigsy escape another sticky situation, maidens grace a heavenly palace, drummers shake the yellow plateaus of the Middle Kingdom. A renaissance of Chinese culture has begun and one of the world’s ultimate dance forms is blazing the path. Shen Yun Performing Arts will be at Straz Center in Tampa, 8 PM on March 3, 2 PM and 7:30 PM on March 4. For more information, visit ShenYun2012.com. asiatrendmagazine.com

Oshogatsu at the Morikami Japanese Garden and Museum Success supported by enthusiasm of volunteers and visitors On January 8th, 2012, the Morikami Japanese Garden and Museum in Delray Beach hosted its annual New Year’s event, Oshogatsu. Brining in the New Year,”Shinnen” is a very important Japanese tradition. Beautiful mild weather drew nearly 7,000 visitors. Many visitors look forward to this annual event and come back year after year. The event showcased Japanese tradition to welcome the year of Dragon. Visitors strolled the manicured Japanese gardens with a scavenger hunt, tasted Japanese foods, admired the museum exhibit and enjoyed various performances of Koto ( Japanese harp-like string) and Odori (traditional dance), Sado (tea ceremony), Kakizome (the first calligraphy of the year) and Taiko ( Japanese drumming). Ms. Kizzy Sanchez Sherven, Director of Marketing and Events describes Oshogatsu is a big celebration for

Morikami. This year, the Morikami added funfilled scavenger hunt for visitors of all ages to enjoy. The social network like Facebook, were incorporated to make the game more interesting by giving away hourly awards to participants. No events can be festive without visitors, but the hard-working staffs and volunteers are keys for successful events. I have been to various Morikami’s annual events for the last five years and always noticed great number of volunteers supporting them. According to Ms. Sherven, 110 volunteers attended at the Oshogatsu. Of those, 37 were local high school students, 10 being Student Volunteer Captains, staying a full day and being responsible for their assigned areas. I asked her how the Morikami coordinates all volunteers. She said, “Volunteers are recruited

in various ways - through high school and college volunteer fairs, through our social networks, and the applications can be downloaded from the Morikami website year-around. All volunteers are well organized by a volunteer coordinator, Sharyl Samuels. Volunteers are assigned to positions on a first-come, first served basis, with some coming back year after year and asking to be placed in the same area of responsibility.” The next major annual festival will be Hatsume Fair on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, 18. One Ton Opinion Soup for the Asian American Soul 社區

HYPHEN

As an Asian-American, my identity remains firmly linked  By Jessica Chen to the hyphen. Allow me to explain. It is understandable that our parents want the best for us; they are simply encouraging and teaching us the only way to success they know. Hard work in childhood will get you into a good college with a good major such as engineering or economics. Study hard, volunteer here and there, and practice the duo (instrument+math). A good college education will yield a good graduate school acceptance or even a stable, well-paying job. The job of author is most undoubtedly impractical. Asian-branded practical.Doctor practical, electrical engineer practical, programmer practical.Aspirations to become actors, comedians, chefs, food critics, and historians veer on the precarious precipice of blasphemy and threaten to disgrace even your fifth uncle thrice removed. For me, it’s easier to count the number Asian kids I know who have never taken a piano or violin lesson than the ones I know who have. SAT scores, GPAs, math competition prizes, and science fair awards coalesce to form some sort of algorithm to fashion the quintessential-and very practical-Asian. But what becomes of this? Sure, I have many Asian friends who successfully enter the workforce in high paying jobs as skilled computer programmers, Wall Street analysts, doctors, and lawyers. However, there is a growing sense of questioning and rebellion in a generation and culture where success is not necessarily grounded in Asian practicality. In the romantic spirit of more decidedly American notions of pursuing passions, many Asian Americans are growing to question what they are genuinely interested in what they have been inculcated to enjoy. To what degree did their parents’ strong emphasis on math attribute to their “interest?” Do they really want to become a mechanical engineer or do they want to become a mechanical engineer to satisfy their parents and to subscribe to the doctrine of Asian practicality? What if their passion lies in acting? Asian practicality dismisses acting as a job that will result in waiting tables at minimum wage and scrounging for money to attend auditions. What if they are okay with that possibility? How can Asian American children grow to reconcile steely Asian practicality with American romanticism? We all know the idiom “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” While Asian Ameri-

can youth are by no means dull and the values of diligence and hard work should never be underappreciated, I often feel as though many Asian American youth become so grounded in this path of practicality that they lose sight of perspective. Some students understandably become so focused on entering a good college that the purpose of their hard work and good grades in high school is to get into an Ivy. I have observed that as many of my friends enter college, the question “what next?” dawns upon them. I find it disheartening when I talk to Asian American youth so fixated on the idea of an Ivy League that they spend their weekends practicing SAT test upon SAT test, that their eyes shine at the idea of a volunteer opportunity in terms of its contribution to their college application, and that they disregard anything that may not obviously contribute to their resumé. The concept of an Ivy League as an end goal has compromised ideals of charity for the good of others, SAT success on the basis of academic merit and large lexicons developed through a healthy appetite for paper and book glue, and exploration of vast realms of interests such as African tribal dancing, didgeridoo playing, and computer construction. And what of worldliness? One incidence that comes to mind is a group conversation involving an Asian American teen who excelled at school and math. However, his inattention to the actual dynamics of the world resulted in his friend persuading him that Kevjumba, a Youtube star, was the president of North Korea—blatantly wrong on several accounts. While a humorous incidence, it brings to light how being so grounded by practicality hinders many Asian Americans from viewing things in perspective, looking at the big picture. The situation highlights a trend of indifference among Asian American youth. We need perspective in the sense that doing well on the SAT solely on the basis of hours of studying, getting good grades but failing to build a sturdy foundation of fundamental skills, being intellectually brilliant but lacking the social skills to maneuver office politics, and volunteering just for a resumé ultimately mean nothing. So what to do? I suggest the hyphen. It is not Asian American as two separate entities; rather,

it’s Asian-American. Two continents and two cultures bridged by a hyphen, representing how we must learn to reconcile differences and capitalize on the attributes offered by both. We need to learn how to not only allow Asian practicality to ground us but also employ the more Western philosophy of allowing us to develop and discover our own interests, rather than insisting on a fixed set. We need to learn how to maintain our work ethic, but also learn social graces and adeptness; we need EQ as well as IQ. We need to learn how to accept interests that deviate from the construct of Asian practicality; we need to learn how to encourage alternate interests with the strong sense of support Asian parents provide. We need to learn how to get involved, how to aspire to greater things than stability; we need understand world politics and economics as well as we do thermodynamics and calculus. We need to use the metaphorical hyphen as a link—allowing us to explore on the winds of American encouragement of individualism while still grounded by the nurturing Asian practicality and concepts of hard work which without, we may be set adrift. Jessica Chen, the best essay winner of the AAHC Asian American Student Achievers’ Awards 2011. Her new column, “One Ton Opinion Soup for the Asian American Soul”, will definitely bring a new insight into the heart of Asian American new generation.

World Renowned Asian American Author Speaks in Orlando

Lisa See Supports Adult Literacy League Lisa See has always been intrigued by stories that have been lost, forgotten, or deliberately covered up, whether in the past or happening right now in the world today. Ms. See was born in Paris but grew up in Los Angeles. She lived with her mother, but spent a lot of time with her father’s family in Chinatown. Her first book, On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family (1995), was a national bestseller and a New York Times Notable Book. The book traces the journey of Lisa’s great-grandfather, Fong See, who overcame obstacles at every step to become the 100-year-old godfather of Los Angeles’s Chinatown and the patriarch of a sprawling family. Some of Lisa See’s most popular novels are: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, and its sequel, Dreams of Joy. In addition to writing books, Ms. See was the Publishers Weekly West Coast Correspondent for thirteen years. As a freelance journalist, her articles have appeared in Vogue, Self, and More, as well as in numerous book reviews around the country. She also served as guest curator for an exhibit on the Chinese-American experience for the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, which then traveled to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., in 2001. Ms. See then helped develop and curate the Family Discovery Gallery at the Autry Museum, an interactive space for children and their families that focuses on Lisa’s bi-racial, bi-cultural family as seen through the eyes of her father as a seven-year-old boy living in 1930s Los Angeles. Ms. See recently designed a walking tour of Los Angeles Chinatown and wrote the companion guidebook for Angels Walk L.A. to celebrate the opening of the MTA’s new Chinatown metro station. She also curated the inaugural exhibition – a retrospective of artist Tyrus Wong – for the grand opening of the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles.

Ms. See serves as a Los Angeles City Commissioner on the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Monument Authority. She was honored as National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women in 2001 and was the recipient of the Chinese American Museum’s History Makers Award in Fall 2003. Lisa See will present and discuss her incredible work at Reading Between the Wines presented by Bank of America on March 1, 2012. This event benefits the Adult Literacy League and will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando Downtown. The author’s appearance will be accompanied by a wine and food tasting, as well as a silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person. “We are so excited to have Ms. See help us share our students’ stories and our mission with a new audience,” said Joyce Whidden, executive director of the Adult Literacy League. The Adult Literacy League provides adult basic education and English language literacy through one-to-one tutoring and classes. The League currently serves 1,000 adult learners on a weekly basis. For more information on the Adult Literacy League or Reading Between the Wines, visit adultliteracyleague.org or call 407.422.1540.

29 years old Jason Wu’s Collection hits Target

Jason Wu, 吳季剛 is a Manhattan-based Taiwanese American fashion designer. Jason is best known for creating Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Ball gown which is a one-shoulder, floor-length white chiffon gown. The designer’s 53-piece line Target collection which consists of timeless dresses and skirts with a modern tweak was nearly sold out the same day it launched. With pieces ranging from $19.99 to $59.99, shoppers lined up for hours ahead of the opening and the stores were cleaned out of the designer’s pieces within hours. Many shoppers were pleased to be able to purchase Wu’s clothing in these affordable prices. His Target fashion line was inspiredby the idea of an American girl in Paris. Thousands of people came out to the Central Florida Fairgrounds on January 21st -22nd and January 27th-29th to attend the Lunar New Year Festival hosted by the St. Philip Phan Van Minh Catholic Church and the Vietnamese Community of Central Florida respectively. This year marked the 20th Anniversary for the St. Philip Phan Van Minh Catholic Church to have organized Vietnamese New Year in Central Florida. They put a lot of man power, work, time, and money into this production and it

really showed. The performances were phenomenal and the Vietnamese super star line up was the best yet for New Years. They had Nguyen Ngoc Ngan from Paris by Night and singers Nhu Loan, Nhu Quynh, Luong Tung Quang, Ngoc Anh, and Thanh Le. It was a real treat for Orlando and you could hear the crowd loving it. The Tet festival of Central Florida is the largest of its kind here in Florida and this year being the Year of the Dragon it was even more extravagant than the previous years. The fes-

tival included numerous vendors selling goods ranging from authentic Vietnamese dishes, drinks, and desserts to gourmet drinks. In addition to the festivity such as the dragon dancing and fireworks, the community holds two pageants every year. This year’s winners for the Mrs. Vietnam Florida 2012 was awarded to Mrs.To Anh from Orlando, FL and Miss Vietnam Florida 2012 to Minh Nguyen from Deerfield, FL. Congratulations to them and all the rest of the contestants for putting up a great show!

J.Club “Shinnenkai” 新年会 ~ Ozoni お雑煮, Osechi お節 ~

 By Teri Mitchell

On January 7th, we had 2012 Shinnenkai to celebrate and start the year of the Dragon, towards J.Club 10th anniversary. I cannot believe it’s already a decade since when I launched J.Club here in Orlando. Yes, time flies 光陰矢の如し!. Generations alternate. Although we have so much pop culture in Japan nowadays, to reserve traditions is still valuable and heartwarming. We cooked Ozoni and arranged Osechi to feel a little bit of Japan’s traditional New Year’s Day.

2012 J.Club Ozoni

2012 J.Club Osechi + Sake, Nigori, Umeshu (plum wine) and Chuhai (flavored Shochu)

The Ozoni came out very good both visually and in taste. As I mentioned in the December issue, Ozoni is the very first meal we have in Japan for the New Year to wish for all, good luck and good health. Osechi is a set of New Year foods, too. We purchased some ready-to-eat Osechi items at J Food Mart (7452 Universal Blvd., Orlando, FL 32819) and arranged them in a Jubako 重箱 (layered Bento box). We only used one layer this time, but it could be a large assortment. Our Osechi contained Kurikinton 栗きんとん, Kazunoko 数の子, Datemaki 伊達巻き and Kouhaku Kamaboko 紅白かまぼこ. Those were all good, as well as Sake, to celebrate the New Year. Everyone was delighted and we made a commitment to have a fabulous year. * Kurikinton 栗きんとん: Mashed sweet potatoes with sweetened chestnuts * Kazunoko 数の子: Herring roe (salted) * Datemaki 伊達巻き: A fish omelet roll * Kouhaku Kamaboko 紅白かまぼこ: Red & white fish cake
