China is New Leader in International Education Rankings The results of the 2009 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) Study were released last month, and on top of the list in the categories of Math, Science, and Reading-- Shanghai, China.

In the United States, 2009 PISA testing was conducted between September and November 2009, and the sample included 5,233 15-year-old students from both public and private schools. According to NCES Deputy Commissioner Stuart Kerachsky, a total of 165 schools were randomly selected and weighted to be representative of the nation.

This year I was an applicant for the AAHC Student Scholarship, and was honored to win 1st place for the 7th grade category. Currently, I am an 8th grader at Stonewall Jackson Middle School. It was a great experience, especially the award ceremony at Sonesta Hotel. Applying for this scholarship gave me an opportunity to reflect on my local and Asian community involvement. This award is a checkpoint for me to see if I am on a path for a future that I want: to excel academically and become an architect or engineer; contribute to the community; and to be proud of my heritage.

See some of the recipients would like to say about the scholarship awards: I first applied for the AAHC scholarship as a sophomore, not fully realizing what would make me truly eligible for an award. Now, I’m a junior and I’ve realized the true purpose of the AAHC -- it’s not to make us show how brilliant and talented we are as individuals, but how we use our gifts to help the community and make a name for Asians in society. I realized that maybe, compared to others, I haven’t done enough of this and it was an excellent source of motivation for me to continue to try harder in the future. Now, I am a freshman and I have a better understanding of the AAHC program. I feel that the AAHC program encourages Asian American students to work hard in academic but also encourages us to balance our studies with community involvement and the development of leadership skills. Bone Marrow Donation — Will You Be the One?

I first became interested in the topic of bone marrow donation when I was doing some research for a class project in graduate school. Many people have heard of blood donation: they’ve seen the Red Cross blood drives, or they know someone who has donated blood. Perhaps they are blood donors themselves. I was familiar with blood donation, but bone marrow donation was something new to me, and as I’ve discovered, to many Asian-Americans. Every year, almost 15,000 people in the United States with leukemia or another lifethreatening disease can be best treated through a bone marrow transplant.1 To have a successful transplant, the patient must find someone whose bone marrow is a match for their own. The best chances of finding a match is usually within the patient’s own family, such as a sibling, but about 70% of patients are unable to find a close match and need to rely on unrelated marrow donors. Bone marrow matches are genetic, which means that the patient has a better chance of matching if the donor comes from the same racial or ethnic heritage. The National Bone Marrow Program (NMDP) runs the Be the Match® bone marrow registry, which is the largest and most ethnically diverse marrow registry in the world. A bone marrow registry matches potential volunteer donors with patients who need a transplant, using a database

or directory of tissue types.2 Many patients turn to the NMDP to find a potential match. Nationally, minorities are underrepresented on the registry. Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders make up about 7% of the total number of volunteer donors on the registry. The more people that sign up, the greater the chances that a potential match may be found for a patient. It’s simple to sign up. There are nine bone marrow recruitment centers based in Florida that are listed on the NMDP website. Some of these centers run bone marrow drives and list those drives on their websites. When you attend a drive, you are given a cheek swab kit, which includes special cotton swabs that you use to swab the inside of your cheek. This sample is collected and used to tissue type your cheek cells, and the results are then used to match a patient. You can also order a kit online at the NMDP website. Once you join the registry, you may never be called to donate. Donors can join the registry when they are 18, and they are asked to stay on the registry until they turn 61, although they may request removal from the registry before then. Within that time span, you may be identified as one of several potential matches for someone. You may also be the only match for a sick patient.

Chinese cuisine has been an integral thread of the American cultural tapestry since the gold rush days in California, with Chinese rail road laborers setting up shop and making “chop suey” dishes out of everything they could find. This all changed when in 1972 President Richard Nixon visited China for the first time bringing new attention and interest for all things Chinese, especially for authentic Chinese food. Golden Lotus restaurant owner Jackson Lo started his career around this time many decades ago beginning in Hong Kong. He is now a builder of Chinese restaurants throughout the Central Florida area and also owner of the famed Szechuan restaurant near Walt Disney World. Golden Lotus is the restaurant he created to bring authentic Chinese food to Central Florida. Golden Lotus restaurant is hidden in a plaza on the southeast corner of Sand Lake Road and John Young Parkway, only a few miles away from the Florida Mall. The wait staff here is attentive and kind, having been at the service of Golden Lotus for many years, a loyalty that is not found in many other restaurants. Golden Lotus specializes in Cantonese and Szechuan dishes, serving dim sum until 4pm daily. They have helpful menus with pictures of dim sum, items on them to aid those of us who may be confused what a fried taro dumpling or shrimp rice paste looks like. Their dim sum is among the best in Central Florida, with fresh ingredients and skillful preparation.

The Planting of Ideas In a person’s life, there are many key moments of success and failure. Having the positive or negative idea is such an important factor. Ideas can turn a person toward great achievement or grave failure. If a person’s mind is deeply rooted in making money and nothing else matters because he or she has set aside good character and morality in the pursuit of money, this person will achieve nothing of significance. Having an “idea” is like planting a seed in that one will reap whatever one sows. A positive idea will lead to wealth, success, and even great virtue, whereas a negative idea will only lead to unwholesome indulgence and moral decay. Having a sound idea is like having wealth that can be enjoyed forever. There are many sayings: “A person’s value comes from one’s contributions; a person’s legacy comes from pursuing greatness.”

“To use money is to have money; to have money is a kind of merit. Knowing how to use money properly is wisdom.” “A person must have an image of the virtuous for the sake of emulating him.” “To be the first, one must learn to be the second; to be the boss, one must learn to be the subordinate.” “To have a good crop, one must first plow the earth and sow the seeds; to be treated well by others, one must first treat others with trust and respect.” One’s growth depends on the soundness of one’s ideas. One will only make progress if one can learn to adjust one’s ideas. A good idea will only be effective if it is accepted by the majority. If it is rejected, it will be rendered useless. Therefore, a worthwhile idea must not be narrow-minded; it must take into consideration all relevant factors. Ideas are wealth, and the Buddha’s teaching is the most precious Dharma treasure. However, many in the past have misconstrued Buddhism. If we are willing to know, to understand, to have the correct perception of, and to practice the Dharma, we will have the treasure of the Dharma forever. We will reap infinite benefits. In the six perfections (paramitas), “giving charity” is perceived as giving to others, but in reality, it is a way to gain inner-wealth. “Upholding the precepts” is perceived as restriction, but it is a way to true freedom and safety. “Patience” is perceived as suffering a loss, but it is a way to gain advantage. “Diligence” is perceived as something hard, but it is a way to happiness and success. “Meditation” is perceived as something boring, but it is a way to vivacity and tranquility. “Wisdom” is often confused with cleverness, but it is the insightful realization of the truth. In the five precepts, “no killing” is the rule against taking another’s life. “No stealing” prohibits taking another’s possessions. “No sexual misconduct” forbids the violation of another’s body. “No lying” is the rule against damaging another’s good name, and “no intoxication” prohibits the infringement on one and others. If the five precepts can be observed faithfully, the true manifestation of freedom and democracy will result. In this world, everything happens in a moment of thought. If we have any inkling of the true, the good, and the beautiful, our lives will be enriched beyond imagination. If we are willing to examine our ideas and introspect daily, our characters will be vastly improved. By broadening our horizons and revising our ideas constantly, we will become better people. Morality is the key to maintaining successful relationships. The integrity of our characters depends on our virtue. The more virtuous we are, the more respectable we will be. Positive thinking is the foundation of loving-kindness and generosity. If we can produce within ourselves correct understanding, purified thoughts, and admirable ideas, and if we can speak words like sunshine and flowers that will bring joy to others, we will definitely have a wonderful life. Far East Movement, the 1st Asian American group to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #1 with “Like A G6”
Far East Movement (FM) is an electro hip hop group based in Los Angeles, California. Far East Movement has the distinction of being the first Asian-American group to earn a top ten hit on the Mainstream Pop charts in America. Their single “Like a G6” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and on iTunes as well in late October, 2010. Members Kevin Nishimura (Kev Nish), James Roh (Prohgress), Jae Choung (J-Splif) and Virman Cocquia (DJ Virman) come from Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino ancestry in the Asian American community. In early 2010, Far East Movement was the opening act for Lady Gaga’s Monster ball tour. Far East Movement recently released their new album Free Wired and single “Rocketeer” featuring One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, produced by The Stereotypes and co-written by Bruno Mars . AT: Where did you come up with the name for Far East Movement? FM: The name came from the first song we recorded in an attic in downtown LA. We lugged a huge old school computer up to a friends attic where we wouldn’t disturb any one and wrote a song about what we felt was a new generation of kid livin’ in LA how we live. AT: Who are your role models and heroes? FM: Our role models happen to be the people we work with: Martin Kierszenbaum who is the head of Cherrytree Records, an incredible music mogul, insane work ethic and understands music and the marketplace better than anyone we’ve met, and our managers Ted Chung and Russell Redeaux who’ve changed the game in their own lane with amazing business scene and work ethic as well. AT: What can listeners and fans expect from your latest album Free Wired? FM: We are honored that our community is acknowledging it and proud to rep but at the same time our music and how we live was never fueled by race, we’re just some everyday kids from LA, artists in LA among hundreds of thousands working for the same dream no matter the race, so its a crazy feeling to be able to rep our neighborhood as well. AT: If you could give advice to Asian American youth today what would it be? FM: Wild out being yourself, have faith, network and create opportunites for yourself, dream big, and surround yourself with positive people, stay free wired. AT: From your experience, what are the most important qualities to be successful? FM: Be passionate, have an intense work ethic, be humble, be patient, never give up.. but we have yet to see if any of this will work haha. New Year, New Challenge
For most of us, the New Year usually means making resolutions. I have found that the most common resolution people make after the holidays is to lose weight. I remember times when a local gym was packed between January-March not only with new members but also with old members who have “taken a break” from the rigors of exercise, pounding some kind of shake at the juice bar and hearing conversations about the latest diet fad. I was one of those. I would pay my monthly dues at the gym but can count with both my hands how many times I have actually been inside the gym. I would start some kind of lose weight diet program only to be on it for a week or two. Oh and not to mention the amount of money I spent not only on those protein shakes but also buying groceries that after staring at them for a couple of hours, wondering what to have for dinner, I call and order take-out. Yeah I would say my attempts to fulfill my New Year resolutions have been unsuccessful. That said, nobody minds losing a pound or two, saving some money on groceries and eating healthier.

This year, I challenge you to be a lot savvier in the kitchen to help you lose weight, eat healthier and save money just by doing these two things:
MEAL PLANNING This is a good start to save money and monitor what you eat. Before I got into planning our weekly dinners, I was spending about $250 on groceries for a household of four every week. I have teenagers and with the way they eat, it’s like feeding 2 more adults so in the end, I always plan to feed six people. Nowadays my grocery bill is significantly less than that a week which is not bad considering we eat at home 5-6 nights a week. In addition to saving money, I also get my family’s input on what kind of meals they would like to eat. Now granted Spaghetti is frequently requested, I have become creative by giving my kids a couple of the food magazines I subscribe to and they each pick one that they would like to try. This gives us 2-3 new dishes that we try during the week. It’s almost like going to a fancy restaurant, getting seconds but not paying the fancy price. Additionally, we do a “pick a country theme”. Perhaps this could be a good way to re-connect with your heritage by preparing those meals that you have not had in a while.

COOKING AT HOME As I mentioned we eat at home 5-6 nights a week. This doesn’t mean I’m always slaving away in the kitchen for 2-3 hours a day coming up with a gourmet meal. Just like any parent of teenagers with a husband who is out of town for work a lot, I juggle my schedule in the afternoon trying to get my kids from here to there. I cook meals that I can freeze and save for another busy night, use my slow cooker so I can “fix it and forget it” or re-invent leftovers. I save Sundays for my special dinner such as pot roast, fresh seafood or something new and complex from a magazine because this is when I have plenty of time to cook.

We used to be a household that ordered take-out quite frequently. However, one of the things I feature on my blog, Saraplicious! Kitchen is cooking your favorite take-out at home. Some benefits of cooking your favorite take-out at home include: 1. You know what goes in your food. There’s no more guessing whether about whether MSG was used or not. Also, if you are allergic to something you can make your favorite meal to suit you. You are making something that’s healthier based on your standards. 2. You save money by cooking your favorite take out at home. Yeah you may be paying $9.95 for Shrimp & Tofu Phad Thai but if you buy the ingredients with the money that you would be spending at your favorite take-out, you can make a lot more servings that you can save for the next day. It’s more cost effective in the long run. 3. You have fun and a sense of pride knowing that you made something that your family will enjoy. Getting everyone involved in planning and making a meal are great ways to bond with family members. Are you up for this challenge?

he festivities begin on the first day of the first lunar month of the New Year and last for 15 days. Lunar New Year 4708, which falls on February 3rd this year, is the most important festival among Chinese (as Spring Festival), Vietnamese (as Tet Festival) and Korean (as Solnal). It is the time for renewal, family gatherings, eating rich foods and paying respect to your ancestors and elders. Also, what you do and how you act during the period is crucial in determining how the rest of your year will go. Immigration and You:
Entries Without Inspection and Fraudulent Entries By Fernando Perez III, Esq.
As an attorney who has been helping clients with their immigration problems for over 29 years, I find that often, because of a misunderstanding of the law, persons will spend years, or a lifetime, in the United States illegally when there is a way to become legal. One of the most common misunderstandings is the difference in the meanings of an ENTRY WITHOUT INSPECTION, sometimes referred to as EWI, and the meaning of a FRAUDULENT ENTRY.
are able to get a waiver. The only exceptions are (1) for persons who apply for asylum; (2) for persons who were in the United States before 2001 and who had a family member or an employer petition for them prior to April 30, 2001; and (3) for persons in removal (deportation) proceedings who have been in the United States for more than ten years, have not committed any crimes, and who have a parent, spouse or child who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
ENTRIES WITHOUT INSPECTION
By comparison, a person who makes a Fraudulent Entry can get a green card (permanent residence) if they marry a United States citizen or if their son or daughter becomes a United States citizen. Those persons, because they were “inspected” when they came into the United States, would apply for the green card like anyone else and will just be required to file a waiver to overcome the fraud at the time of entry.
Very simply, and Entry Without Inspection describes a situation where someone sneaks into the United States. This would include persons who sneak across the border into the United States from Canada or Mexico or persons who come ashore on a boat and, who, after entering that way never come into contact with a Customs and Border Protection Agent who checks their passport and visa and formally admits them into the United States. Specifically, the term Entry Without Inspection refers to anyone who enters the United States who is not “inspected” by an Agent with the United States Customs and Border Protection agency. Persons who make an Entry Without Inspection will not have any official papers or a stamp in their passport showing the place and time of entry.
FRAUDULENT ENTRIES By comparison, a person who makes a Fraudulent Entry is a person who is formally admitted to the United States after being inspected by a Customs and Border Protection Agent, but who uses false documentation like a false passport or a false visa, or who provides false information to the Customs and Border Protection Agent, to get admitted into the United States. Because these persons were “inspected” these are not Entries Without Inspection. Persons who make a Fraudulent Entry will have an I-94 entry card, even if it is in someone else’s name, and a stamp in the passport used to enter showing the date and place of admission into the United States.
THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE The reason it is important to know the difference between these two terms is that a person who makes a Fraudulent Entry has more possibilities for becoming legal than a person who Enters Without Inspection. Under current immigration law, it is usually impossible for a person who makes and Entry Without Inspection into the United States to become legal. It does not matter if they marry a United States citizen or if they have a United States citizen child. For persons who make an Entry Without Inspection normally the only option is to return home. However, returning home is not recommended because in most cases when the person leaves the United States they will not be able to return for ten (10) years unless they

To get the waiver a person would have to convince the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service that if they have to go back to their home country for thee (3) to ten (10) years it will result in an extreme hardship to a parent or spouse who is a citizen or resident of the United States. The exception to this is someone who entered the United States using a fake United States passport. This is because alleging to be a United States citizen is a separate bar to obtaining a green card (permanent residence) for which there is no waiver.
CONCLUSION The important differences between an Entry Without Inspection and a Fraudulent Entry are just one example of a situation that is often misunderstood. What is important to realize after reading this article is that the immigration laws of the United States are complicated and always changing. For the same reason readers are also advised to ignore any advice received from family, friends or non-lawyers like immigration consultants. These persons, even if they mean well, will not know the latest laws and their advice may make the situation worse. Anyone who is in the United States illegally, or who is here legally and is considering trying to remain to work or live, should consult with an attorney specializing in Immigration Law so they can get a clear understanding of their legal options.

A Fundraiser Idea
On October 17, a super typhoon locally called “Juan” hit the Northern Philippines. With strong winds up to 217 mph, Juan destroyed homes and flooded the Northern Luzon regions; Isabela, the City of Tuguegarao, and the Mountain Provinces. The typhoon would end up leaving thousands of residents living in damaged and flooded homes but this typhoon could possibly impact the Philippine economy negatively during harvest time with ruined crops in the agriculturally rich lands.
The Filipino – American Club of Saint Joseph Catholic Church had a wonderful idea of raising funds to help the people affected by the typhoon, they decided to invite a Music Group called Hangad to perform a fundraiser concert at the church. The group was already scheduled to be on Tour in the USA and members of the local Filipino Community were called to help Sponsor the group so they can perform at the fundraiser concert.

Hangad is a Filipino word that means “yearning” or “desire”. The musical group was formed in 1991 by a handful of boys from Ateneo High School, just think of them as a singing group similar to today’s “Glee” but they sang songs with a strong influence and devotion to God. The group is part of the Jesuit Music Ministry and since its founding 19 years ago has expanded to include women to its family of over 80 individuals from various schools and professions. The group has recorded seven albums and produced four music videos under the Jesuit Communications Foundation. The individuals from Hangad that were able to participate with the fundraiser concert are Mariel De Jesus, Elaine Aliga-Ricafort, Clare Royandoyan, Melody Ricohermoso, Jeanie Tolentino, MJ Fancia, Paulo Tirol, Prime Asprer, Domi Espejo, Migs Jimenez, and Louis Ricohermoso. Hangad Concert On November 12, Hangad performed to the local community at a fundraiser concert at St. Josephs Catholic Church. The people of the community came to listen, be moved, and become inspired by the music and songs sung by the wonderful group.
As I listened and watched the group perform their songs; Walang Ibang Hangad (No other desire), Without Seeing You, The Lord is My Shepherd, You Raise Me Up, Dwells God, Give Thanks to the Lord, Child Emmanuel, Magnificat, Groovy Medley, Panunumpa (oath), Pag-ibig Ko (I Love), Love Never Fails, Raymond’s Lullaby, Paghahandog (offering), and The Climb, I couldn’t help but feel my heart swell with hope and inspiration for the people in the Philippines that were affected by typhoon Juan. The Fundraiser concert was able to raise $1,197 with the help of Hangad, St. Joseph Church, and the Filipino – American Club and the Concert’s many sponsors, volunteers, and the Filipino Community. The donations collected will be used to help the people affected by typhoon Juan.
You too can help Typhoon Juan would end up taking 12 lives and affecting 215,037 people in the wake of its path. With the world economy struggling to get out of its deep recession, help to the people affected is expected to be slow and very little, so the local Filipino Community took matters into our own hands. The Morikami Museum - 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach, Fl 33446. The 33rd year at the Morikami, Oshogatsu - the traditional New Year celebratory festival – is celebrated with games and entertainment throughout the museum and its gardens. The day’s activities will include Japan’s customary rice-pounding, making mochi rice cakes and a sado tea ceremony as well as kakizome, hands-on calligraphy; nengajo, New Year’s card making and omikuji, fortune telling. Special appearances by shishimai, the lion dancer are sure to bring in good luck for the New Year! Cost: $8 for adults, $4 for kids (Museum members and children 3 and under FREE).
