UNITED KINGDOM CHAPTER 208

ASIS NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR – WINNER 2015, 2013, 2012, 2008 & 2003 – HONOURABLE MENTION 2011, 2006.

ASIS UK Chairman, 6 months in Dear Colleagues, Well . . . here we are half way through the year and it's been an extraordinary period both in the UK and overseas. Last time I wrote in this newsletter, the UK was fully part of the EU and now we're not, David Cameron was Prime Minister and now he's not, we were still reeling from Paris and Brussels and now we're reeling from Florida, Istanbul, Dallas, and most recently Nice in France. It goes to show just how much can change in such a short period of time. There are, I am sure, some serious implications for UK Security as a result of Brexit and although it is impossible to predict what these will be, rest assured that ASIS UK are fully engaged at the appropriate levels and will help shape and inform what these changes will mean for us over the coming months and we will, of course, keep you posted on any changes that will impact on the UK and further afield. ASIS UK Military and Police transition workshop The Summer seminar at SOAS was preceded by a fantastic transition workshop for those leaving the police and military and considering joining the security profession. The event was brilliantly hosted by ASIS UK Board Director, Dawn Holmes CPP and newly appointed committee member for Military Liaison, Scott Paterson, supported by Committee Lead for security sectors Dr Mike McDonagh. Most of the ASIS UK Board were also actively contributing. This was the first time ASIS UK has delivered a specialised workshop like this, with a specific target audience; I didn't know quite what to expect. I knew our team were well prepared

and I knew that there was a good number of people from the uniformed services signed up, but I hadn’t looked at the content as I was keen to experience what we were delivering with fresh eyes and, as an exserviceman, I wanted to see first-hand what benefit this would prove to be for those transitioning. I sat fascinated through some incredibly well delivered, informative and interactive and very practical sessions and advice on CV writing, expectations, education, qualifications, recruiters’ point of view, transitional skills, comparative roles and how to take maximum advantage of previous career skills. The whole session, which lasted over three hours, was very informative for the attendees and all were enormously grateful for the work put in by Team ASIS. Many delegates accepted the invitation from ASIS UK Board member, ARVP and former police officer, Andy Williams CPP, to meet for a 1-1 session to further understand the benefits and pitfalls of transitioning from police to the private security sector.

David Clark CPP PSP PCI – ASIS UK Chapter Chairman I really was impressed at how engaged the audience were and can't help but think that we have helped create a very well informed and enlightened group of future security professionals. They now have a much better understanding of the UK Security industry and are either reinvigorated or considering alternative careers elsewhere!

ASIS UK Autumn Seminar 26th September 2016 This event will feature an Active Shooter Workshop and a Panel of leading UK-based CSOs discussing how they get their security message to the C-Suite.
