Welcome to your Winter magazine! Dear Friends, Welcome to a new selection of inspiring books, CDs and gifts for all the family! This is our last magazine for the year, however you can find our full range online, along with December's publications which we'll be presenting in our January edition. As ever, here are a few of my highlights: * I’m very keen on the new biography of Hudson Taylor, a fascinating story, and there is also a matching DVD available, and in the same vein I can warmly recommend the John Bunyan biography and DVD! You can find these on the adjacent page. * Timothy Keller provides food for thought on page 5 – particularly in Hidden Christmas and his new book The Prodigal Prophet exploring the biblical story of Jonah. * We had chosen to feature two recent books by Eugene Peterson on p12 before we heard the news that he sadly passed away a few days before this magazine was completed. The lasting legacy of this wise wordsmith will be The Message, his ground-breaking translation of the Bible that brought new life and relevance to many. * In In This Light Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has collated thoughts and contributions from many friends, some Christian, some not. Particularly moving are the 3 pages by Hea Woo, a member of a North Korean underground church. We have included her Christmas poem alongside the book on p24. Whether you celebrate Christmas on your own, or amongst family and friends, we hope you have a blessed time. Merry Christmas, from all of us here at Aslan Christian Books!

Top Picks! James Hudson Taylor

Ruth Broomhall The life story of James Hudson Taylor and the China Inland Mission, a story of the power of the living God and the possibilities of the Christian life. Hudson Taylor was an ordinary man called at a young age to an extraordinary task: to take the message of God's love to the people of China. A calling, which he accepted with abundant joy, sailing to China when he was just 21yrs old. A life of service in China required incredible strength and resolve and was not without personal tragedy, yet his legacy continues today. Ruth Broomhall draws on family archives to bring this unique portrayal of a great missionary, and each chapter has suggestions for thinking on and responding to the themes further.

John Bunyan: The People's Pilgrim

Peter Morden It may seem strange to us today that someone could be imprisoned for 12 years for refusing to stop preaching the Gospel, but that's what happened. Barely escaping deportation, Bunyan used the time in squalid conditions to grow closer to God and start work on some of his famous books. Confined in a dirty, damp prison cell with little outside stimulus, Bunyan penned The Pilgrim’s Progress, now a classic and was the world's second most printed book. He harnessed his gifts to become a preacher of such power that toward the end of his life people flocked to hear him. This is a lively, engaging account of John's life. Pb | 176 pgs | CWR

In Every Corner Sing

Malcolm Guite Succeeding Ronald Blythe's Word From Wormingford on the back page of the Church Times, one of the most beloved columns in contemporary journalism, was a formidable challenge for any writer. Yet priest-poet Malcolm Guite, immediately gained the affections and loyalty of its discerning audience. His perceptive and imaginative musings are, in his own words, 'a little in the spirit of the sonnet, with a sense of development, of a 'turn' or volta part way through, and a sense that the end revisits and re-reads the opening'. They draw together everyday events and encounters, landscape, journeys, memory and the sacred to create richly satisfying portraits of the familiar that at the same time opens a doorway into a new and enchanted world. This new book from Malcolm is a 'poet's corner' collection of writings.

Prayer & Spirituality A Spring Within Us

Richard Rohr 'The water I give will be a spring within you - welling up into infinite life.' John 4:14 A year of daily reflections inviting you to rediscover the spring hidden inside each of us. Richard Rohr reminds us of God's indwelling presence and that we are inherently beloved. Remembering who we truly are is a lifelong journey. Richard offers insights to ease the process and lead us back to our Source. Although each life moves at its own pace and in different ways, our growth does follow a common sequence - from innocence, through inevitable brokenness, to putting ourselves back together and ripening into union with self, God, the world and others. Rohr explores each stage, drawing from Scripture, Christian mystics, various faiths, psychology, science, and the Twelve Steps, reframing their concepts into daily reflections for the year. Each week includes an invitation to contemplative practice. Hb | 432 pgs | SPCK

Timothy Keller

The Prodigal Prophet Most people, even those who are non-religious, are familiar with the book of Jonah: a rebellious prophet defies God and is swallowed by a fish. But we're less familiar with the second half of the story - what happens after Jonah is released from the belly of the fish. Yet it is in this second half of the story that one of the most powerful and important lessons of the Bible is hidden. It shows how, if we understand the mercy of God, it will always take us in directions we'd rather not go, to people we would rather not care about, and ultimately into the deepest counsels of God. In a time of growing division, this book shows how we must listen to God's call even when it takes us to uncomfortable places.

The New Testament begins not with a dramatic narrative or poetry, but with a genealogy. Provocatively, Matthew's gospel includes women in Jesus' family line - something that wasn't customary in an ancient culture where women were largely powerless and uninfluential. How to Live

Judith Valente The Rule of St. Benedict arose in an era threatened by violence, economic injustice, politics and xenophobia. 6th Century Rome was in many ways like today. Benedict was not a priest or religious official, he was a young man disillusioned by a corrupt compassionless society. He had a vision for life where human values won; a vision of harmony and hope. This is a book about living not just surviving, about how to live a meaningful, conscious life rooted in ancient and time-tested wisdom. Filled with anecdotes of the struggle of balancing life with finding meaning, explore key elements of the rule and how incorporating its wisdom can change the quality of our lives. Includes discussion on humility, awareness, silence, simplicity, trust, prayer, forgiveness, consensus, listening and living with awe in an increasingly divided world. Hb | 224 pgs | WILLIAM COLLINS

What We Talk about when We Talk about Faith

Peter Stanford Peter has interviewed people of faith for 35yrs as a journalist for The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian. This is a collection of interviews with activists, writers, artists, politicians, and those who have taken vows of faith, all demonstrating that there are as many ways of exploring faith as there are individuals doing it. Biography & True Stories Striking Out

Stephen Cottrell On a September morning Bishop Stephen Cottrell said mass, then walked to the station; the start of a 700km pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Choosing the least travelled route, he craved the solitude of the road and the vulnerability of not knowing what each day would bring or where he would find meals or a bed. As a busy man he looked forward to what the journey would reveal. This is his spiritual diary, arranged in four sections, each with reflections and prayer poems, all echoing the rhythm of walking. She opened a series of centres to support them, despite her health. This is the story of her journey (and harrowing experiences during the separation of the North and South), and her work today training those working with vulnerable children. The Language of Tears

David Runcorn We rarely discuss tears, yet there's a Christian tradition of seeing them as a gift, exploring their meaning, purpose, place and significance for prayer and spirituality. The early church saw tears as an extension of baptism and the Spirit; integral to prayer, integration and maturing. Jesus said that those who mourn are blessed. Christ the Heart of Creation

Rowan Williams What we say about Jesus is key to understanding what Christianity says about the Creator and creation. Texts from the early centuries to today show the various ways Christians have discovered in their reflections on Christ a way to approach creation, as well as ethics and politics. This book draws on insights from Eastern Christianity, Western Middle Ages and Reformed thinkers, from Calvin to Bonhoeffer, as well as philosophers like Kierkegaard. Williams opens up concerns of fundamental issues for Christian belief and tackles them head-on, putting across these complex ideas to a wide audience with clarity and wisdom. Little did they realize that it was like trying to put out a fire with petrol. The whole world exploded.' Religion Hurts

John Bowker There are a bewildering variety of religions, each with a variety of practices and beliefs. How have religions developed and become so widespread? Why do they matter so much to so many? Why do religions do harm as well as good? John Bowker, one of the world's most distinguished scholars of religion, delivers a timely analysis of the issues. He shows how recent research, particularly in the neurosciences, genetics and evolution, throws new light on what religions are and on the part they have played in human life and history. His explanation of why religions are a force for both good and evil offers hope as well as insight for all who want to understand the many complex interactions between religion and life today.

Catching Contentment

NEW

How to be Holy Satisfied PRE-ORDER: Publishes 15th Nov Liz Carter If anyone has a right to feel angry with life, then Liz is a strong candidate. Having battled with lung disease from a young age, suffered at the hands of bullies, and reluctantly given up her much-loved teaching job, she has plenty to complain about. But she has made a point of exploring contentment. She has drawn particularly on Paul's letter to the Philippians. 'Contentment is something we can all catch hold of' she believes, 'whatever circumstances we find ourselves in'. This is a message which we need to hear, whether we are lifelong sufferers, or facing deprivation or injustice, or have simply fallen into bad habits. We cannot fail to be uplifted, and hopefully transformed, by her discoveries as we learn to buck trends within society and the church and find courage and contentment in Jesus. Pb | 208 pgs | IVP

Irresistible

Andy Stanley Faith was once something worth living and dying for, faith was irresistible and pursued at risk of persecution, job loss, and eviction from their homes, temples, and society. What if we followed their lead? Perhaps it would change how we read the Bible and help us understand our own faith? Perhaps we would change the world again? In Irresistible, Andy Stanley shows how distortions of the Gospel have left us with an anemic version of Christianity that undermines our credibility and our evangelistic effectiveness. He takes readers on a fascinating journey back in time to recover a faith so rich, dynamic and disruptive that it couldn't be ignored, marginalised, or eradicated. Rather than working harder to make Christianity more interesting, we need to recover what once made faith in Jesus irresistible.

When we drop the act and allow ourselves to be vulnerable by sharing our struggles, not only are we strengthened, but we experience authentic fellowship. The song that brings hope to many was written in minutes by MercyMe singer, Bart Millard. Yet the lyrics took a lifetime. Although he found faith at a young age, a troubled home made life hard until a teacher saw his potential and set Bart on a path to music. He formed a band and set off on a journey none of them could have imagined. A beautiful true story and a reminder of the power of forgiveness.
