Hope and the Nearness of God: The 2022 Lent Book

Teresa White In these days of pandemic, war and political turbulence, hope can seem to be in short supply. But hope is one of the theological virtues and it is far more profound than mere optimism. Today, pessimism and despair seem all too prevalent. What can we do about the poor and starving, about those who seem to be locked in interminable conflict and families weighed down by the consequences of breakdown? Sister Teresa White's book is an antidote to all this and it is written with beautiful simplicity and directness. She draws on inspiration from writers as diverse as Julian of Norwich and Karl Rahner, Elizabeth Barrett-Browning and Henri Nouwen, but throughout the book there is strong scriptural underpinning which the author uses to great effect. Sharing the Easter Story: From Reading to Living the Gospel

Sally Welch In this year’s BRF Lent book Sally Welch explores two questions: What is the Easter story really about, and how do we share it? Through each week of Lent, a different aspect of the Easter story is examined: repenting, changing, hoping, trusting, forgiving, loving and sacrificing. Within each week, the days are focused on what we need to do in order to share the story: listening, understanding, reflecting, living, telling, sharing and becoming. Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity. Pb | 208 pgs | BRF

Lent The Hour is Come: The Passion in Real Time

Andrew Nunn The Gospel accounts change when we come to the final days of Jesus’ life and for the first time we are given precise timings when things happen, ‘It was night’, ‘the next morning’, ‘it was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him’, ‘it was noon’, ‘it was three o’clock in the afternoon’. The Hour is Come enables readers to enter into the experience of Jesus, his disciples and all the other players in the Passion narrative by using ‘real time’ to immerse us in the story. Ideal for daily reading during Lent, Holy Week and Easter, it offers scripture reflections and prayers that trace the journey to and beyond the cross. This presentation reveals a God so intimately involved with human life that the ticking clock becomes part of how we know Jesus. Pb | 208 pgs | CANTERBURY PRESS

Magdalen Smith Connect contemporary encounters of wilderness with the traditional themes of Lent and Jesus' journey to the cross. Introducing a series of 'double-edged' subjects, Magdalen uncovers how these bring us life as well as potentially drain life from us when we fall into them in the wrong way. How we deal with our appetites; what gives us identity; how to live with the freedom and power we hold; ways to overcome the underlying anxiety which is wrapped around so much of contemporary life and faith - all of these are explored in connection with what it means to be followers of Jesus. And as each week progresses from 'wilderness to grace', we move through Lent and Holy Week into the glorious hope of Easter. Pb | 216 pgs | SPCK

Theology Spectres of God

My Theology Series

Rachel Mann Priest, poet and broadcaster Rachel Mann believes the world is charged with a divine spark. She explains how in our encounters with what she terms 'the spectres of God', one can become at peace with limitation, precariousness, lack of certainty, and one's fragility and fractures - and at the same time find in divine fragility the hope of the world. Drawing on her own experiences, in three short chapters Mann explores how God invites us, repeatedly, to live in a rich three-dimensional mystery that subverts the depressing flat-earth of modern life. Walking With Jesus in Strange Places

John Swinton Theologian John Swinton argues that theologians' own stories inevitably matter in relation to the study of the divine. It follows that Swinton describes his place of formation walking alongside people living with intellectual disabilities, mental health challenges and dementia, and how it has gifted him with the opportunity to ask different questions of the tradition; questions that emerge from the lives of people who see the world differently. That learning has shaped him as a theologian and raised some crucial questions around the nature of faithfulness, discipleship and the question of exactly what kind of community the church is and should be in both theory and in practice. Prayer & Spirituality The White Stone: The Art of Letting Go

Esther De Waal Esther de Waal is one of today’s most beloved spiritual writers. In The White Stone, she reflects on the changes and losses that come with growing older. Esther reflects on solitude and, following a period of illness, saying goodbye to a family home and the Welsh border landscape she had known for decades which inspired some of her greatest writing, and adjusting to a new city environment. In her characteristic style, she sees everything as a portal into a deeper spiritual understanding. She draws on the wealth of the Christian tradition, especially scripture and the monastic and Celtic spiritualities she knows so well, to help her navigate her way through not only the inevitable sense of loss that accompanies such change, but also to embrace the new possibilities it brings. This is a book of simple, profound wisdom that will speak to many coping with change in their own lives. Pb | 126 pgs | CANTERBURY PRESS

In Search of Angels: Travels to the Edge of the World

Alistair Moffat Fourteen centuries ago, Irish saints brought the Word of God to the Hebrides and Scotland's Atlantic shore. These 'white martyrs' sought solitude, remoteness, even harshness, in places apart from the world where they could fast, pray and move closer to an understanding of God: places where they could see angels. Columba was the most wellknown of these courageous men who rowed their curraghs towards danger and uncertainty in a pagan land. In this book, Alistair Moffat journeys from the island of Eileach an Naoimh at the mouth of the Firth of Lorne to Lismore, Iona and then north to Applecross, searching for traces of these extraordinary men. Christian Life Cross-Examined: The Life-Changing Power of the Death of Jesus

Mark Meynell The crucifixion of Jesus: a dreadful mistake? A tragic failure? Irrelevant? Absurd? An embarrassment? The cross of Christ is, in fact, at the centre of God's plan for men and women. This book explains why. With freshness and clarity, Mark Meynell explores the Bible's teaching, to show how God Himself 'cross-examines' us in the death of Jesus. The Bible: A Story that Makes Sense of Life

Andrew Ollerton When we make sense of the Bible, the Bible makes sense of us. The political, social and cultural upheaval of our times can leave us feeling bewildered and wondering where to turn for trustworthy guidance. As unlikely as it may seem, could the Bible provide ancient wisdom that helps us flourish today? Join Andrew Ollerton as he explores the storyline of Scripture, connecting six major biblical events with six definitive human needs: for meaning, freedom, peace, community, love and for an ultimate home. In short, digestible chapters, Andrew reveals how the Bible story makes sense of our human story. This book has been chosen for the National Big Church Read in January 2022. Twenty Questions Jesus Asked: And How They Speak to Us Today

John Pritchard We usually think of Jesus as preaching and teaching, but throughout the gospels he is often asking questions - searching enquiries that disarm the hearers into responding unreservedly and provide some of the most profound lessons in the New Testament. But what were the questions that Jesus asked? And how can we learn from them today? Twenty Questions Jesus Asked explores just that. Over four distinct sections, John Pritchard explores twenty of Jesus' conversations to examine the experience of those being questioned and reflect on their significance for us as modern Christians. With questions for reflection and prayer exercises, Twenty Questions Jesus Asked is a brilliant book for both individual and small group use. Pb | 160 pgs | SPCK

And Yet: Finding Joy in Lament

Discount for bulk! Order 10+ of any book from us and you'll get an extra 10% discount!

Rachael Newham In the depths of depression and plagued with suicidal thoughts, Rachael Newham never thought she’d find herself writing a book on joy. And yet, if her journey with mental health illness has taught her anything it is that true, deep, lasting joy can only be experienced when we allow ourselves to enter into lament and be honest about our pain before God. With warm understanding, Rachael traces how Biblical writers used ‘and yet’ to bring together joy and lament and invites us to see them not as opposites, but two sides of the same coin. Drawing on her experiences with mental illness, she shows us how we can build a rhythm of both joy and lament into our lives. Pb | 160 pgs | FORM

Patti Callahan Megs Devonshire is brilliant with numbers and equations and prefers the dependability of facts - except for one: the younger brother she loves with all her heart doesn't have long to live. When George becomes captivated by a copy of a brand-new book called The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and begs her to find out where Narnia came from, there's no way she can refuse. Despite her timidity, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with the Oxford don and his own brother, imploring them for answers. What she receives instead are more stories . . . stories of Jack Lewis' life, which she takes home to George. Why won't Mr. Lewis just tell her plainly what George wants to know? The answer will reveal to Meg many truths that science and maths cannot, and the gift she thought she was giving to her brother - the story behind Narnia - turns out to be his gift to her, instead: hope.

Chick Yuill It’s Christmas Eve, 1976. Lori Bloom, aged three and three-quarters, is leaving a busy department store with her mother when the tannoy announces that a child in reception is lost and crying for her parents. For as one Christmas follows another, Lori finds herself confronting painful questions and in need of a companion in whom she can confide. But will there ever be someone Lori can completely trust? A Passion for Places: England Through the Eyes of John Betjeman

David Meara All his life Sir John Betjeman loved churches, which are woven into his poetic output. He wrote extensively about churches and architecture, telling a journalist in 1955 ‘If I have a mission, it is to show people things which are beautiful so that they will very soon realise what is ugly. When you look at things, instead of just looking through them, life starts absolutely crackling with interest and excitement.’ This book picks out some of the buildings, especially churches, which Betjeman was particularly fond of. It highlights and celebrates Betjeman’s more poetic, parochial and personal response to the built environment, and his evocation of the English parish church through the ordinary and the charm of hassocks, old incense and oil lamps. The Vanishing: The Twilight of Christianity in the Middle East

Janine di Giovanni The Vanishing reveals the plight and possible extinction of Christian communities across Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine after 2,000 years in their historical homeland. Some of the countries that first nurtured and characterised Christianity are the ones in which it is likely to first go extinct. Christians are already vanishing. In The Vanishing, Janine di Giovanni has combined astonishing journalistic work to discover the last traces of small, hardy communities where ancient rituals are quietly preserved amid 360 degree threats. Full of faith and hope, di Giovanni's riveting personal stories make a unique act of pre-archeology: the last chance to visit the living religion before all that will be left are the stones of the past.
