Unfollow: A Journey from Hatred to Hope, leaving the Westboro Baptist Church

Megan Phelps-Roper Westboro Baptist Church are a fire-and-brimstone sect, notorious for picketing, aggressively homophobic, anti-Semitic, and rejoice over AIDS and natural disasters. They've been featured on BBC documentaries such as 'The Most Hated Family in America', as well as 1000s of news stories. They're also the church Megan was raised in. It was in many ways a normal upbringing. In other ways it was the opposite: TV cameras, discipline and family being excommunicated. From her first public protest, aged 5, to her central role in the church - she believed their hate was preaching God's truth. In 2012, she left the church and her family. Unfollow is a story of a rare thing: a person changing their mind. While this book doesn't tie Megan's journey up in neat bows of renewed faith, it offers fascinating insight into Christian extremism and narrow thinking, and chronicles her journey, and her resolve to champion others rather than seeing their sin.

Life Is Not a Long Quiet River

Willy Slavin Approaching old age need not be feared. It can and should be a time of freedom and spiritual contentment. Our biblically allotted lifespan is 'three score years and ten, or eighty if we are strong'. Even today, this is about right. The decade from 70-80 is an important opportunity to reflect on life. Slavin, a Roman Catholic priest in his 70s, illustrates the freedom that comes from his lifelong experience of obedience, poverty and celibacy. He argues that we are all more obedient, poor and celibate than we admit. We came into the world innocent of power, money or sex. A Year with Andrew White

Andrew White Canon Andrew White has had a stunningly diverse career. Between his medical training and ordination, he has a doctorate in anaesthesiology and 2 doctorates in theology, alongside 19 honorary doctorates, and was appointed the Archbishop of Canterbury’s ‘Special Envoy to the Middle East’. White has been engaged in high level conflict resolution for many years, helping draft policies bringing together religious and political leaders around the world. From 1998 to 2014 White served as vicar of a church in Baghdad which became one of the largest and most dynamic Anglican congregations in the Middle East; a Church which also provides medical and humanitarian aid. This is not a book of 'feel good' meditations, it takes us into the real world. Best Seller Having spent most of his life ministering and being a peace negotiator in the Middle East he makes us face the truths of a suffering world which includes kidnapping and terrorism; a world almost unrecognisable to readers in the comfortable West. Andrew Bradstock Sheppard was a prominent cricketer in the 1950s. An opening batsman, he was selected for England and later captained. For 20 years they worked tirelessly to revive the city, helping to break down its divisions. In 1997 Sheppard was awarded a life peerage, and played an active role in the Lords, and as a writer, speaker and preacher, until his death in 2005. Jesus' words from the cross - a picture of God sharing the world's suffering, experiencing our humanity - can be a window onto God's purposes and overwhelming love. I Thirst (originally the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent book in 2004), helps us explore what the death of Jesus means for our lives. A Passion For Christ: Cover to Cover Lent (2020)

Michael Baughen Paul's letters to the Corinthians revealed how passionate he was for Christ, the Church and for everyone to follow and serve Christ. His own comfort came second. He was willing to follow his Lord even if it meant suffering. Scripture says 'we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ' (2 Cor. 1:5). Can we really identify with His sufferings? Most of us live lives of plenty, comfort and choice, so what does this really mean? Over 6 studies, consider how we can: be a Church marked by love and holiness, share the hope of the gospel, shine the light of Christ's glory, use testimony, give our lives as a living sacrifice to Christ.

Steve Chalke We've misunderstood Paul, reading his words through our assumptions and values. But our goal is to see things as he did, not as we do. What if 'original sin' wasn't part of his thinking? What if the idea that we are saved by faith, as Luther strongly argued, was mistranslation? Over the centuries the Church has often failed to communicate or understand the core of Paul's message. Alive in God

Anyone who understands the beauty and mess of life - writers, poets, filmmakers - can be our allies, whether they believe or not. The challenge isn't today's secularism but its banality. Follow the disciples as they try to understand the strange man who heals, casts out demons and offers endless forgiveness. In the face of death, he teaches what it means to be alive in God, then embraces all that afflicts humanity. Explore what it means to be alive spiritually, physically, sacramentally, justly and prayerfully. Explore the Christianity's origins and why people became susceptible to a 'new religion'. Look at the gods, miracles, 'magic' and daily life from 200 BC to the 1st Century. Rupert Shortt In his new book Outgrowing God, Richard Dawkins tries to demolish religion, starting with belief in a Creator. But does he understand what he rejects? Shortt's response is Outgrowing Dawkins, a book showing that Dawkins doesn't grasp the point of view he's challenging, because the deity he rejects is a parody of who God is. From that mistake flows muddles and flimsy arguments. This incisive rebuttal includes positive suggestions for advancing an often sterile debate. Luther's Gospel

Graham Tomlin Martin Luther was one of history's most influential figures with 900 million people belonging to churches that trace their roots back to his Reformation 500 years ago. His thinking and writing were fresh, controversial and provocative. They evoked strong reactions, and still do today. This book offers an accessible look at the way he unpacked a range of issues, and how it gives us ways to respond to today's issues. Examining his approach to topics such as sex, freedom, prayer, evil, and Bible translation, it illustrates the mind of a man who was of his time, yet still speaks today.

Reformation Divided

Eamon Duffy Explore the impact of the cataclysmic transformations of European Christianity. The revolution usually referred to as 'The Reformation' implies a shattering of religious foundations as a single process, in which a defective Christianity was replaced by one that was benign. History & Eschatology Building on his critically acclaimed Gifford Lectures, Wright presents a case for a theology based on a renewed understanding of history. The question of 'natural theology' is a question of how we can conceive of God acting in the world, and why, if God is good, is the world full of evil. Cultural and philosophical assumptions have conditioned our understanding of history in ways that make the idea of divine action in history problematic. But could better study of ancient Jewish and Christian history renew our understanding of the relationship between God and the world? This offers a distinctive approach to theology grounded in what Wright calls an 'epistemology of love', arising from his reflection on the significance of 'new creation' for our understanding of the world, God and their relation to one another.

Forgiving My Father, Forgiving Myself

Ruth Graham When we live with unresolved anger or hurt, the result is nearly always bitterness, broken relationships and unhealthy behaviours. Unforgiveness sabotages our interactions with those around us, and impedes our spiritual growth and peace. And it can happen to anyone. In this vulnerable book, Ruth Graham reveals how a visit to Angola Prison inspired her to release the unforgiveness lurking in her own heart - toward others, herself, and even her heavenly Father and her earthly father, evangelist Billy Graham. She weaves her personal experiences with biblical examples to explore what holds us back from forgiving others and ourselves, and what we gain when we finally discover the power to forgive. Along the way, she guides us into our own experiences of forgiveness, past our protective walls and to true transformation. Pb | 272 pgs | BAKER

Looking Shame in the Eye

Simon Cozens What is shame? Where does it come from? How can we break free and help others in it? Shame, humiliation and stigma are all around us. There's a crisis of self-worth, a thirst for judgement and a need for freedom. At the same time, people are becoming less responsive to the Gospel. If we want to reach others and bring healing, we need to speak their language: the language of shame. This book introduces 'shame thinking' and shows how God's freedom can release anyone suffering from the debilitating grip of shame.

Or met Archbishop Damaskinos who, when threatened with the firing squad by the Nazis, replied, 'Please respect our traditions - in Greece we hang our archbishops.' Whether pushing down country roads on a tank or taking a bullet for a schoolgirl, these 15 extraordinary people fought for the world they believed in. Wherever fascism takes root, it's met with resistance. From wartime Athens to 60s Alabama, Vichy France to Brazil's dictatorship, these are the priests who dared to act against those who believe hate is stronger than love. Hb | 256 pgs | ONE WORLD

A Field Guide to the English Clergy Judge not, lest ye be judged. This wisdom has guided Anglicans for centuries, fostering a tolerance of eccentricity. Good thing, too. The ‘Mermaid of Morwenstow’ excommunicated a cat for mousing on Sunday. Late for a service, Bishop Lancelot Fleming commandeered a Navy helicopter. ‘Mad Jack’ swapped his surplice for a leopard skin and insisted on being carried round in a coffin. Yet they saw the church as their calling. This is a funny, intriguing collection of diverse eccentrics, pirates, prelates and adventurers; all Anglican, some even practising. Christian Life Reimagining Britain

Justin Welby In a time of political turbulence and a country that's changed beyond recognition, Justin Welby draws on Christian teaching to identify the values that will enable us to reimagine and enact a hopeful future. What are the building blocks for "British Values"? How can they be implemented in a post-Brexit, multicultural country? A changing nation either happens by accident with no focus or, with intent, love and perseverance. This book from is a call for Christians to contribute to a changing culture. An encouragement to live and act with an intent to help shape and build a Britain based on Christian tradition but adapted to reflect the needs of today. Health, housing, culture and sustainability, this is an in-depth look at social issues. Hb | 320 pgs | BLOOMSBURY

So Everyone Can Hear: Communicating Church in a Digital Culture

£3

Mark Crosby Communication is the heart of every healthy community; the church is no exception. Matthew 11:15 states, 'Whoever has ears, let them hear'. How do we make sure we're saying things in a way that invites people - no matter their background - to engage with what it means to be church today? This engaging, practical book will help leaders and members alike be better at 'communicating church' both inside and outside of it, within today's dynamic culture. Pb | 160pgs | SPCK

Equal: What the Bibles Says about Women, Men, and Authority

Katia Adams Can women and men lead, or are they designed for different roles? This question has been a topic of heated debate and controversy for decades, with implications for the Church and society. Katia argues that the Church has too often misrepresented the heart of Jesus to release and empower both genders. With sensitivity to both sides of the argument, Katia draws on the wisdom of Scripture, theology and the Spirit. Blending them with personal experience, she asserts that both genders are equally called to serve and lead in the Church and the world. By restricting roles, we miss God's design for the Church and for the gospel's impact on the earth. Pb | 292 pgs | DAVID C COOK

Addressing such themes as repentance and intercession, Charlie Cleverly draws on biblical inspiration from Hannah, Joel and Paul, and places particular emphasis on coming to God in prayer, not only for the individual, but for families, the Church and the nations. John Mark Comer NEW

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry Who are you becoming? That was the question nagging pastor and bestselling author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, everything appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren't pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: 'Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.' It wasn't the response he expected, but it continues to be the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness as a root of much evil. Within the pages of this book, you'll find a compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favour of a slower, simpler way of life. Pb | 304 pgs | H & S

The Faith of Queen Elizabeth

Dudley Delffs Discover the inspiring spiritual legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history, and explore the life of this notoriously private family with stories from Winston Churchill, Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Margaret Thatcher and more. Icon, matriarch, reformer - the Queen intrigues millions with her heritage, character and faith. With a reign that bridges the 20th and 21st century, she's become the definition of stability, faithfulness, dignity, public service and private devotion. Nearing seven decades on the throne, the Queen has faced personal and public storms - an early ascension to the throne, the dissolution of the British Empire, political upheavals, international crises, and tragedies. Through it all, Her Majesty credits her faith in Jesus as the anchor to her life and reign. Pb | 224 pgs | ZONDERVAN
