DVDs Feature

Welcome to your Sept magazine! Dear Friends, The end of the summer holidays brings a great selection of new titles – some of which may seem unduly seasonal, such as a full page of Advent books (p23) ready for churches who like to browse study books early! But as always, here are a few other key titles to look out for: Holy Living by Rowan Williams (p12) Bestselling author Rowan Williams opens up the longstanding Christian traditions of the life of holiness we are called to through meditation, contemplation and prayer. Themes which are every bit as relevant to our lives today as it has ever been. And to further help us in our daily lives we present a selection of titles on the Christian Life (pages 16 to 21) from the funny (Gary Alderson’s Writes of the Church) to the encouraging (He Will Hold Me Fast) and the profound (I Thought There Would Be Cake): Continuing with our popular author interviews, this month we spoke with pastor John Van Sloten, author of Every Job a Parable (p21). Each of Jesus’ parables is rooted in everyday reality and experiencing God in small as well as dramatic ways. John's new book offers encouragement to see that our daily lives can also be a series of parables. facebook.com/AslanChristianBooks

As usual, throughout the magazine you will find true stories, prayer and spirituality, theology, fiction children’s books, DVDs, music and a small selection of general books;all handpicked by our team to bring you the best new books to strengthen you on the journey. Enjoy reading – and be inspired!

Parish

An Anglican Theology of Place Andrew Rumsey Parish is uniquely embedded in English culture, yet remains an overlooked theological theme. Whilst ecclesiastical history is a pillar of academic training for ordination, ecclesiastical geography is not - contributing to uninformed assumptions in mission strategy. At a time when their relevance and sustainability are being weighed, there's a need for a clear analysis of the historical, geographical, sociological and theological importance of parishes. This unique book examines communal life created by the Anglican parish and it's significance, filling the gap in contemporary scholarship and helping form a vision for the future of the parish system. A Fierce Love

NEW

Shauna Shanks Wrecked with news of her husband's affair and his request for a divorce, Shauna found herself faced with a decision. To give up and divorce her husband, or fight for her marriage. But God's plan for how to love says "love is patient", "love is kind", "love never gives up". Taking God at His word she found herself not only falling in love with her spouse again, but also falling in love with Jesus, which changes everything. This book is not air-brushed. It was written in the midst of struggle and Shauna purposefully doesn't edit out her mistakes and failures during that season. This book will resonate with women who do not feel like the picture-perfect Christian woman with the fairytale life and marriage. Pb | 240 pgs | ZONDERVAN

Prayer & Spirituality Praying the Bible with Luther

Michael Parsons There's a need in today's church to relate scripture and prayer in such a way that enables us to speak God's word. This book takes a simple 'lectio divina' approach developed in the 16th century by Martin Luther and offers practical guidance for prayer. Beginning each time of prayer with a Bible passage, Luther would meditate on it with four 'strands' in mind: teaching, thanksgiving, repentance and supplication. Then he would pray in response to the passage and its four strands. This is an introduction to Luther's method, with demonstration and encouragement, helping us to turn scripture into prayer and to pray it into our lives. Pb | 144 pgs | BRF

The Last Arrow

Save Nothing for the Next Life Erwin Raphael McManus At the end of our life we're not measured by successes and failures. All of those will begin to blur together into a singular memory called life. What gives someone solace or haunts them is what they could have done but didn't, who they could have been but never became, the life they could have lived based on the choices they made. This book is a call and much needed push towards that "most courageous life." By examining the account of Elisha and the King of Israel, McManus demonstrates why it's best to follow God into battle with an empty quiver. He shows the reader why leaving everything on the battle field feels risky but yields the deepest sense of fulfillment we can know in this life.

Soulfulness

Brian Draper The beauty of mindfulness is that it's incredibly simple both to 'get' and to practise. And the results are considerable: calm, reduced stress, creativity, awareness... yet there's a danger that mindfulness can be used in a consumerist and self-serving way to help people to become better adapted cogs in a still-toxic model of life. Brian Draper challenges us to live not just mindfully but soulfully. Not merely less stressed, but flourishing; to be present through living intentionally and compassionately. This is a whole-life look at mindful living. Pb | 272 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

‌ Unpopular Culture

Guvna B "Money is the key to happiness. Work hard, play hard. Look out for number one." Popular culture is full of phrases like these, telling us (and the younger generation) the best way to live, the right things to buy, the right body shape to have, the right people to hang out with. These messages are everywhere you look, 24 hours a day. But what if there was another way to live? What if we chose to live differently: to stand against injustice, to live life for more than just ourselves, to dare to be unpopular but for Jesus' sake? Christian rap artist Guvna B is rebelling against the status quo, and he's calling everyone - the young people in our churches in particular - to join him in changing the script. This book demonstrates another way to live, to find freedom in going against the grain but living a life that reflects the Gospel. It's time for unpopular culture to take the stage. Bernie A. Van De Walle Holiness is experiencing a renaissance both within and beyond the church today. This approachable theological introduction to the Christian doctrine of holiness challenges the commonly held idea that holiness is primarily a moral category. Reading Jesus's Bible

How the New Testament Helps us Understand the Old Testament John Goldingay For Jesus and his contemporaries, what we now know as the Old Testament was simply the Scripture - it was the fundamental basis of how people understood their lives with God. John Goldingay, author of the Old Testament for Everyone series discusses ways the New and Old Testaments interlink. In doing so, he provides a new way to approach the Old Testament. Along with a systematic overview of how Jesus and the first Christian writers used the Old Testament - with passages from Matthew, Romans, Corinthians and Hebrews - this is a straightforward introduction to the Old Testament in its own right. Christian Life Writes of the Church

Gripes and Grumbles of People in the Pews Publishes 25th Sept NEW Gary Alderson What would a church magazine's letters page look like if people wrote what they actually thought - and what does it tell us about how we think of our church? Locals bicker and wonder and the vicars are overworked. This book is an unusual and loving angle on the Church of England. Its people are quirky, overwhelmed, frustrated or sometimes just plain oblivious. But the depth of their love for the church comes through the threats to boycott the church over a tea towel, the obsession over saving money, and the complaints that children are allowed into the church during an act of worship. Through laughing at ourselves, we learn more about each other. Through learning, we might change. Through change, we grow. Pb | 160 pgs | BRF

Forgiveness Remembers

Paul Farren & Robert Miller 'Forgive and forget' - society's mantra. What if the path to peace is 'forgive and remember'? This radical, liberating idea shows that forgiveness lies in grace-filled remembering, not denial-laden forgetting. True forgiveness isn't the work of a moment. Its path doesn't run straight and its difficulties can leave us trapped. God's Grace can break this cycle so we find ourselves caught up in a spiral of hope that leads to freedom. Christian Life Every Piece of Me

Shattering Toxic Beliefs and Discovering the Real You Jerusha Clark Throughout Scripture, God reveals himself as the great I Am. He doesn't define Himself with reference to any thing, person, or trait. He is, and that is enough. Women find themselves in a far different situation. When we introduce ourselves, we typically describe ourselves in terms of our relationships (the wife, mother, daughter, sister, or friend of someone else) or in terms of our accomplishments (our title, position, education, or accolades). When our identity is wrapped up in things, we inevitably strive to prove our worth. God made us to be just as He is.

Unseen

Publishes 21st Sept

Sara Hagerty Our culture values what we can produce, yet most of our life is unwitnessed, leaving us feeling unnoticed and the extent of our journeys hidden. Away from the need to perform, every heart longs to be known. It seems wrong, yet this is exactly God's plan. He's the only one who truly knows us, who understands the value of the unseen in our lives. It's only when we hide ourselves in Him that we can truly give ourselves to others and know the joy of a deeper relationship with the God who sees us. This radical idea seems wasteful in its lack of productivity, yet it's exactly how God created us to be. God is in the parts of our lives that no one else witnesses. We've not been relegated to these places. We've been invited. Invited to a place where our biggest victories are in the unseen, the time just with Him. Hb | 224 pgs | ZONDERVAN

Real Love in an Angry World

Rick Bezet The world doesn't dislike Christians because we're godly and stand for justice. It dislikes us because we can be downright mean! In our engagement of culture we have drifted to two extremes; compromising on truth, or condemning those who disagree. But Jesus spoke the truth in love, despite opposition, and calls us to do the same. A call not to abandon principles that may hurt feelings, but also not to present truth in a diatribe that achieves nothing. Bezet invites you to sit in on his real conversations with people, showing you how it can be done in loving, courageous ways. For anyone unsure if they're doing more harm than good when they talk (or don't talk) about faith, this book offers a compassionate and inspiring corrective. Pb | 192 pgs | BAKER

Q & A with John Van Sloten "For years my view of how Jesus' parables worked was limited... I've come to realize that the created elements of his stories—the down-to-earthness, the real-life content, ordinary people doing ordinary things—also carried revelatory weight." John Van Sloten, Every Job A Parable

Your book draws together stories of people in different stages of their life and journey. What story had the biggest impact for you, both as a pastor and as an individual on your own journey? My first thought goes to Colleen - an elderly woman who hand delivered flyers in my neighbourhood for years. The day we spoke on the street - about how God used her work to help a lot of consumers find what they need and save some money - is indelibly marked in my memory. She was astonished that God would have anything to do with her little job, and was so thankful for what I said to her. I remember walking away from that conversation feeling so human and alive. It felt like God was seeing her (and the value of her work) through me.

the Bible. You've coined a new phrase; Lectio Vocatio. How would you explain it to those about to read your book? Lectio Vocatio is a spiritual practice that will enable readers to commune with God through his other book. Most Christians believe that God speaks through both the bible and creation. In [my book] I include stories and questions that help the reader engage their jobs from a new perspective thus enabling them to more fully experience God’s vocational presence. I include spiritual exercises, unpack good image bearing loves, passions, and aptitudes. I then try to connect God’s vocational revelation to his revelation in the scriptures. The hope is that the reader will know God more as they read all that he’s written.

Why do you think people struggle to link work & faith? They’ve been taught that the link between work and faith is all about their integrity, witness, or contribution to the common good (as though God wasn’t already present at their workplace). No one ever told them that work can be a place where they can experience God, or that they have been made in the image of a God who works! Few have ever imagined that what they love and are good at is connected to what God loves and is good at. They’ve never considered that those times of vocational flow - where time disappears and you get lost in the goodness of work - could be places where God is near; in the creating, cleaning, healing, serving, managing, building, learning, or accounting moment.

People often struggle with the phrase "partnering with God" and yet, as you write, God is still actively creating through His work and ours. What's one of the blockages in our ability to connect with such a profound idea? I am prone to being very self centred. I think that God is a part of my life, when in fact I am a part of his. And his life is huge - all-powerful - and it fills the cosmos. To partner with God is to be caught up in the eternal, universe creating, world tending, ever-loving relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In order to begin to understand the lopsided nature of our partnership we need to have our perspectives reversed. We need to pray for an inversion of our perspective. We need a God’s-eye view of reality. We need to realize that we are the beloved, the seen, those through whom God is accomplishing his good and perfect will.

How has approaching God through the lens of different job roles changed your view of Him? I’m reminded of God’s character & presence everywhere. When I’m served in a restaurant I recall how a serving Christ brought good things from God’s kitchen to me. With every bite I taste and see that God is good. When an accountant does my books I see the image of a God who cares about reconciliation, ferreting out the inconsistencies and balancing the books in a shalom-like way. As I’ve interviewed scientists over the years - seeing their passion to know the nature of reality - I find myself knowing the God who created all reality, the great Physicist, Biologist, Botanist, Chemist, etc. People at work have become iconic to me - I can see God’s working presence through them. The greater variety of jobs I engage, the greater my view of God gets everything that fills the cosmos really is made in, through and for Christ (John 1:1-3, Col 1:15-17). Many will be familiar with the idea of Lectio Divina ('divine reading') as a method of connecting with

What did you want to be when you were a child? And with all the 1000s of paths open to us as areas to serve, if you could do any job in the world, what would it be? As a 6yr old I wanted to be a firefighter or police officer, like many boys at the time. Now... I want to find that vocational place where I can tell as many people as I can about a God that they can experience everywhere. So I suppose I want to continue to write and teach. As I experience the parable that is my job, I feel very assured that I am in the place God has for me right now. I think knowing God at work can give us more with which to choose the right career.
