Top Picks How Happiness Happens

NEW

PRE-ORDER: Publishes 3rd Oct

Max Lucado In a world searching for happiness, bestselling author Max Lucado provides a personal plan for a life filled with lasting joy. Do you feel happy? How long has it been since you felt infectious happiness? For many of us the answer is "it's been a while. I used to be happy, but then life took its toll." Only a third of us say we're happy. Worldwide, people profess that happiness is their most cherished goal. Marketers get this. "Want to be happy" they ask. Eat these, drive this car, wear this dress. Yet, for all its promise, it delivers a fragile joy; here one day, tomorrow scattered by comparison, disappointment or unmet expectations. In this book Max shares the unexpected path to a lasting happiness, one that produces reliable joy in any season of life. Based on Jesus' teaching and backed by research, discover a surprising but practical way of living that will change you from the inside out. Pb | 208 pgs | THOMAS NELSON

Love Set You Going

PRE-ORDER: Publishes 19th Sept

Janet Morley 'Love set you going', the opening words of Sylvia Plath's poem for her newborn daughter are true of each one of us. Love is fundamental to our being, growth, development and happiness. Love enables us to find meaning and it gives us hope for what lies beyond. It is humdrum and ordinary, yet mysterious beyond words. Life offers, and asks of us, many different kinds of love, and poets have reflected on this truth with insight and acute observation. As Janet Morley explores love 'up and down the generations', 'grown up love' and love between 'God and the human heart', she reveals what our hearts eventually discern; love has its seasons and ambiguities, its certainties and passions. Love is never simple.

Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God's Image

NEW

Dr Paul Brand & Philip Yancey The human body is endlessly fascinating with incredible secrets. In this new work of 2 classics (Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image) edited together and updated, renowned surgeon Dr Paul Brand and award-winning writer Philip Yancey take us on a tour of wonder through the human body. Illustrated with stories from Brand's career as a hand surgeon who changed the lives of leprosy sufferers through groundbreaking treatment, this lively narrative paints an unforgettable portrait of the unity of the body in its trillions of parts. Human physiology comes alive on the page, so does Brand's deep love for people as image-bearers. Although Brand and Yancey do not presume readers share their faith, they trace the metaphor of 'one body, many parts' from a medical perspective and through the unifying Body of Christ. Filled with riveting stories, this book offers astonishing insights and page-turning reading. Pb | 288 pgs | H & S

Augustine's Life of Prayer, Learning and Love

Cally Hammond What can we learn from Augustine? There are many biographies on how he shaped Western Christianity. This isn't a book about his faith and doubts, it's about how he learned to read the Bible, pray, and love - the Word at the heart of faith. It concludes with moments of prayer from his life, in which he glimpses visions of God, encouraging you to take your next steps in discipleship. 'Here is the wonder and challenge of the Christian faith through Augustine's most personal of writings, skilfully interpreted to show how our most human struggles and longings can bring us to the love of God.' So What's The Story...?

Barbara Glasson & Clive Marsh Life is an intricate tapestry of stories. Stories help us understand the world, our relationships and ourselves. We use them in daily life and work; churches and communities use them to build from within and to reach out to others; and stories enrich our knowledge of God and help our faith grow. What can we learn from other people's stories? How can we better express our own, and hold it alongside the stories of God? How can engaging with these stories help our life and witness, and on what occasions can they be unhelpful? Explore these questions privately or in groups. Each chapter includes reflections, points for connection and a prayer. Pb | 160 pgs | DLT

Biography A Better Ambition

NEW

Tim Farron The inside story of a life that continues to test the boundaries of political opinion. Full of warmth, honesty and humour, Tim Farron traces his rise to leadership - from his childhood in Preston, to his teenage decision to join the Liberals, to becoming a Christian, to his role in the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition of 2010-15 (the first time the Lib Dems had taken part in government since 1945). Tim speaks openly about his role as Party President, followed by the intense experience of leading them through the snap general election of 2017. He reflects on the affects and implications of the scrutiny he received because of his religious beliefs, and his subsequent choice to step down rather than give them up. After the disastrous 2015 general election result, Farron rebuilt his party, leading them through the 2016 EU referendum and the 2017 election. So what made a man who had reached the top of his career voluntarily relinquish it? Was it right? Are there lessons to be learned about the role of religion in politics today? What does this mean for those who strongly hold a liberal vision in Britain today? What does it mean for Christians in public office? Hb | 304 pgs | SPCK

Bibles & Study The Badly Behaved Bible

£4

Nick Page We're told the Bible is a beautiful, uplifting read - we know this is how we're supposed to feel, but many of us don't. On opening the Bible, we're faced with problems; from its form and historical content to its size and distasteful stories. We can be left feeling overwhelmed and disheartened. But the problem isn't the Bible, and it's not us either. It's that we've been misinformed and end up believing things about the Bible that it never claims. The Bible won't fit the neat categories and terms we force on it - it's badly behaved. We want to control it, tame it so that we can ride it into battle; but the Bible bucks and throws us off. We want it to prove our theology and give us answers; but instead it fires questions. We want it to tell us what to do; but it tells us to think. The Bible is an invitation and a call. The breath of God lifts its pages, they rise and fall with His breathing. In an honest, accessible style Nick urges us to rediscover the Bible, demystifying its purpose and scope. He tackles what the Bible is and isn't, and how we can critically read it and approach its difficulties. With helpful analysis and practical advice Nick helps us see the Bible as Holy Ground, a place where we encounter God. Hb | 272 pgs | H & S

Old Testament Ethics: A Guided Tour

SAVE

John Goldingay What is ethics? Ethics is not merely about tricky situations or hot topics. Instead, ethics is questions about what sort of people we are, how we think, what we do and don't do, and how we ought to live our daily lives. How might we learn ethics from the Old Testament? Instead of searching for support for our positions or pointing out problems with verses, John Goldingay urges us to let the Old Testament itself set the agenda. Encounter what the Old Testament teaches about relationships, work, Sabbath, character, and more. Featuring Goldingay's own translation from his bestselling ...For Everyone series and with discussion questions included, this is a resource like no other. Topically organised with short, stand-alone chapters, this book is one to keep close at hand.

What Do We Do With the Bible?

Richard Rohr Does the ancient, sometimes violent and contradictory text have anything to teach us today? Selective use of Scripture by preachers and politicians alike has been employed to justify violence, racism, misogyny, homophobia... the list goes on. Still, we believe the Bible has something important to say. How can we read it in a contemplative and intelligent way? Richard Rohr offers a methodology of hermeneutics (interpretation) that creates a foundation for a hopeful vision - incarnation from beginning to end of time. In particular, he focuses on Jesus' method of using his Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus read between the lines to find and follow God's mercy, inclusion, and compassionate justice. For him, everything came down to relationship and transformation. Hb | 96 pgs | SPCK

Just as his instructions revolutionised their lives, it can revolutionise our lives also. It's the heart of the Gospel: the only way to live the Christian life is to allow Jesus to live his life in us and through us. Includes material for reflection and questions for group discussion.

God in Public

How the Bible Speaks Truth to Power Today A provocative book in the vein of C. S. Lewis's classic The Weight of Glory, for those wanting to learn more about how biblical principles can help us address contemporary concerns. What has Christianity to do with power? Why must the Church remind those in authority of their responsibility? What can Christians do to act as the voice of the voiceless? How can speaking of God in public help create new structures of justice and peace? These are central questions of this book, in which Wright demonstrates the many ways faithful exegesis of scripture can throw fresh light - God's light - on the great philosophical and ethical problems of our day. Edmund Newell People feel a spiritual connection to the sea. Art, poetry and expressions of religious experience draw heavily on imagery of its power, wideness and depth. This book is a unique exploration of our complex relationship with the seas and the oceans through history. Godless Morality

In this passionate, heartfelt book, Richard interrogates the traditional ways of understanding the Bible, demonstrating the power of the great Christian stories as they apply today, away from their sometimes antiquated settings, providing a blueprint which takes the core teachings of the Christian past and invigorates them with renewed power for today's world.

If the use of God in a moral debate raises more problems than it solves, is it better to leave God out of the argument altogether and find strong human reasons for the rules we live by? Godless Morality is a refreshing, courageous and human-centred justification for contemporary morality.

Theology & Faith Is Jesus History?

«

Andrew's September Pick John Dickson What can we really know about the past? Can anything be trusted as historical fact? Are the historical sources for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus trustworthy? Did a man called Jesus really live in 1st Century Palestine, or is he a figure of legend? In this timely book, historian John Dickson unpacks how history works so that we have tools to evaluate what we can confidently say about figures like Emperor Tiberius, Pontius Pilate, High Priest Caiaphas, and Jesus. He presents the evidence and the conclusions of the vast majority of scholars, both Christian and non-Christian. But he also asks pertinent questions: If Jesus really did exist, was he who he claimed to be and if so, what does that mean for you today?

Author Interview: Giles Lascelle Breakthrough is a new book helping Christians navigate pastoral issues in supporting abuse survivors. Written by psychotherapist Giles Lascelle, it offers resources for survivors to help them journey to healing, as well as in-depth exploration of how trauma effects us, alongside reflections and discussion questions for those supporting people who are struggling.

Many won't know you or the charity, tell us about you: I'm a survivor. So I’m very familiar with the lengthy journey of recovery and healing that survivors face. Those experiences led to me working for social services [which] got me interested in helping people to heal from the emotional scars caused by trauma, so I trained and qualified as a psychotherapist in 1995. I worked for the NHS and voluntary organisations and found abuse and trauma were at the root of most of the difficulties faced by the people I saw. Around 2000, I became a Christian through personal crisis and the witness of Christian colleagues. The strange thing is that I was encouraged by people in the Church to give up being a therapist, they saw it as ‘not godly’. I wanted to do the right thing, so I worked full time in ministry. After a while I realised that the church I was helping lead had a number of survivors, all of whom needed a lot of help. Gradually I sensed God calling me back to my original mission as a therapist working with people who had been hurt as children. So I established a charity called Breakthrough that supports survivors of trauma and offers training and consultancy to churches and organisations who want to learn to support survivors effectively. Everything we do is from a Christian perspective, though our services and training are available to everyone. How big an issue is trauma in adults? Absolutely huge. 1 in 5 people are maltreated as children. Survivors are x3 more likely to have mental health issues, twice as likely to develop chronic health conditions and more likely to become dependent on drugs/alcohol as they use substances to numb emotional pain... around half of drug users fit the PTSD criteria. The personal and social impact is vast.

exploring the counter-culturally honest parts of your journey? It wasn’t an easy decision. I felt it was important to get across that salvation and wholeness can be rough journeys for survivors. We won’t fit expectations of churches and those who haven't experienced the things we have. The standard plot-line is ‘I was a mess, Jesus saved me, then everything was alright and I lived happily ever after.’ But that wasn’t the case for me. Jesus certainly saved me, but some of the hardest parts of my recovery came afterwards. I can tell you, there are few things more humbling than leading a Christian mental health charity and experiencing a public breakdown a few years later. That, however, is the reality and for survivors if we allow our reality to be sugar-coated, our healing won't be complete. What was the most challenging part to write? The section where I try to answer common questions survivors (particularly of sexual abuse) have about sex and sexuality. I wanted to be sensitive to the complexity of the issue, but also to be real. I felt I was labouring under the Church’s history of discomfort in discussing sex and sexuality. Even now the book is finished I’m not sure I got the balance quite right. But these are important issues, and survivors can be so damaged in this area. We have to learn to do better, even if it is uncomfortable for some of us. What was the most encouraging part to write? Where I begin to imagine what a trauma-informed church might be like... with some education and the willingness to embrace a view of survivors as ‘the least of these’ that Christ calls us to love, Church can become a safe and empowering space for survivors.

What can we expect to find within this book? What is your hope for the book? A lot of the book is taken up with explanations of That survivors can start to understand what they're what is happening psychologically for survivors. This experiencing and be empowered to take back their is important because most survivors believe there's lives and become whole. And that those supporting something wrong with them. Most of the ways they them can gain a better understanding and feel more respond to life are understandable when we consider able to come alongside to love and care for them, the physical, emotional and spiritual wounds they've even though it may be a bit out of suffered. These explanations are accessible and their comfort zone. Alan Bartlett For 30 years the Church has been talking about the challenges of providing ordained ministers. Now, overdue structural change is happening, but 'vicars' (priests, pastors, ministers) are often left bewildered and demoralised. This book celebrates Anglican ordained pastoral ministry, the value of vicars' ministry and way of life, and their gifting for relating to communities and churches. Vicars lead people - those in the church and those outside - in prayer and praise, care for them in their suffering and rejoice with them in their joys. This has sustained the Church for centuries. Yet, how can they be better equipped? Does church ministry have to evolve now? How can we meet the need for an institutional church?

PRE-ORDER: Publishes 19th Sept

The Gift of Faith Through Music In a conversation about his teaching and preaching style, Bishop Michael Curry (most well known as the passionate speaker who delivered Prince Harry and Meghan's royal wedding address) noted with a laugh that hymns and songs of faith were always a part of his faith and his journey. "I learned what I believed in the songs I heard my family - especially my grandmother - sing. We sang our faith every day." Out of that strong foundation, Bishop Curry shares the music of his childhood, and the songs that have grown with him to shape an adult and vibrant faith. Hb | 144 pgs | H & S

A Radical Way of Life We need Christians who are as crazy as the Lord. Crazy enough to love like Jesus, to give like Jesus, to forgive like Jesus, to do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God like Jesus. Crazy enough to dare to change the world from the nightmare it often is into something close to the dream that God dreams for it. It might come as a shock, but we are called to craziness. A Theory of Everything (that Matters)

Alister McGrath On 29th May 1919, British astronomers tested Einstein's theory of relativity measuring paths of stars travelling near the sun during an eclipse. On 7th November 1919, the results were announced in London, proving Einstein's theory. This book celebrates the 100th anniversary of this moment. With the confirmation of Einstein's theories our understanding of the universe became much more complex. What does this mean for religion? Does it mean the death of God? In A Theory of Everything (that Matters) Alister McGrath, Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University, explores these questions, giving an overview of Einstein's theories, including his nuanced thinking on the difference between the scientific enterprise and beliefs outside its realm. This groundbreaking book is for anyone intrigued by one of the 20th Century's most iconic figures, and who is interested in the conversation between science and religion. Hb | 192 pgs | H & S

Between Living and Dying

NEW

Ruth Scott Rev Ruth Scott was a writer, a mediator in conflict transformation, one of the first women to be ordained in the Church of England, and a presenter of Pause for Thought and Thought for the Day on Radio 2 with Terry Wogan and Chris Evans. Chris was a close friend for over 10yrs and held a moving interview with her a week before she died. Ruth's busy diary suddenly had to be cleared when she was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. She said 'discovering that life might be shorter than expected or hoped for concentrates the mind... Whatever life's left, I do not want to waste it'. In the shadows between living and dying, she learned to live with extremes of treatments that were as aggressive as the cancer, and daily ups and downs that created constant uncertainty. Through insight, literature, poetry and song, Ruth explored what life is and how it should be lived. This book is the result. Here, she opens up the depth of life in ways that allow for doubt and uncertainty while making room for mystery and understanding beyond logic. Her reflections on how we relate to each other, the environment and the 'more-than-me-ness' of life offer inspiration for us all. Pb | 176 pgs | BIRLINN
