Over the past several thousand years Kooyongkoot has gone through radical transformation in terms of resource distribution within its built environment that impacted on its ecological equilibrium. The hunter and gather community of first nation maintained their land management techniques to observation and understanding of the environment, of the plants, fish, birds, insects, animals and seasons and of the varied sources of water.4

These were subtle skills learnt through constant observation and practice and passed on from generation to generation.

After arrival of settler, they started to incorporate their imported technology to the existing culture of aborigines which was eventually replaced over the time of colonization to support their survival economy. Industrial revolution accelerated the process of urbanization and the industrial economy dominated over the ecological priorities with lots of radical actions. Which let to unsustainable and harmful consequences such as extinction of several plants and animal species, regular flooding, high acoustic levels, raise in temperature, segregation in social and ecological connection. In present time it is our responsibility to rethinking and deep time reckoning for establishing an ecological networking for a sustainable future.

Vulnerable locations of the creek due to radical infrastructure development

The current masterplan is focusing on develop the area near major vehicular connections that already exist and a very few minor pedestrian connections. Which leads to a very unsustainable scenario with void spaces that are not connected through the creek corridor. These spaces bubbles radius are range from 0.8km to 2.5 km with no interval or resting point for users. This blind bubbles are creating serious security concern for the neighborhood. The current strategies only working on the trail’s accessibility and green corridor but no major interventions with the adjacent neighborhood.

In looking at the land use pattern, we see that a majority of the zones on the Northern side of the creek is dedicated to be Neighbourhood Residential Zones which makes the density far lower, making people more reliant on automobiles to get to their destination. Meanwhile on the Stonnington side of the creek, a lot of the zoning are turning into General Residential Zones where denser communities are being developed, this resulted in more localised communities where people don’t have to be that reliant on cars and it’s just on the other side.

The current masterplan has significant strategies for the healthy waterways for the creek, but it has lesser planning to improve the biodiversity conditions depending on the local context. The masterplan produce generic strategies which leads to some difficulties to develop due to its contextual requirements.

The flood catchment is a very big issue for the creek specially in specific location. The downstream flooding is happening due to different infrastructure development in the specific location which leads to serious damage for neighborhood community.

Activity frequency along the creek has diverse scenarios. Due to the sports complex and education facilities are major attraction of the area the public frequency mostly happening morning to evening time. Specially afternoon to evening hours are key aspect to think to design development.

The current masterplan has not had any major strategy to tackle the acoustic conditions near the freeway which has serious impact on the biodiversity and neighborhood. It only rely on the sound wall and existing green barrier of the creek.

The Three Ecologies Félix Guattari 1992

Guattari’s achievement is to link three spheres of ecology –environmental, social and mental – into a set of interrelations he calls ecosophy, a term he coins seemingly unaware of the “deep ecology” movement or the ecosophy of Arnold Naess. Now we see a different hierarchy of units –gene-in-organism, organism-in-environment, ecosystem. Guattari’s transversalist notion of subjectivity avoids the individual-social difference as well as the subject’s givenness or preformedness as a person or individual.

The illustration visualize the living condition within the context of nature in Kooyongkoot. All the leaves and flower are representing as letter of nature with layer of texting. With is this lush layer of text different species are playing and living their life. How two distant communicator are communicating through the multilayer text of nature without saying a ward.

The illustration visualize an individual’s space thinking. Different letter are following the shape of natural element and creating a poem to that person to invite within their realm. Different color giving an ambience of calm.

The illustration visualize the power of Kooyongkoot through its path. How it still create ecosystem where possible. Far distant texts are having intense feeling of nature in different spots where the lush vegetation happening. Faded blue areas reminding the creeks power that it can came out from the detention any time and swamping across its path.

By the year 5710 CE there will a major climatic change going to happen due to global warming and sea level rise. I believe people will still survive with a more radical development as multilayered connection to more decentralized scenarios to adjust the sea level rise. Kooyongkoot will merge with the surroundings.

By the year 2020 CE major urban design and architecture intervention happening with a focus on city dwelling. We are losing natural lands and the water flows. Major water bodies are either covered or with mega structure or forcefully change its stream. Connecting the city to far corner suburban area is a major concern now. Monash freeway is shallowing the natural stream like a giant sneak. It is cutting the community with a sharp edge. Make the biodiversity in a dangerous situation

By the year 35102 CE human civilization may going for the space exploration and earth may become unlivable. But people may come to visit to find the any chance to re habitat again in the valley of Koyoongkoot.

The primary purpose of the built environment is to provide for human well-being through the provision of housing, clean air and water, food, energy, sanitation, jobs, and happiness. The social roots of the area and community are where design should begin. The main design challenge for the twenty-first century is to modify the built environment such that it not only meets the social requirements of the community, but also does so within the boundaries of ecological systems by taking an integrated approach to social, ecological, and technical systems.

Using designed module component (4mX5m) with multilayered aggregateion for different required 1,2 & 3 bed unit in an optimal scinario that can adapt maximum future adaptibility. The orientation of module depend on the basis of unit number and openings of the module. The process was studying with wasp plugin of grasshopper (A visual scripting language) with different constrain and structural aalignment.
