Preface The University of Calicut came into being on 23 rd July 1968. C.H. Mohamed Koya, the then Minister of Education, Kerala took the initiative to establish this University to cater to the higher educational aspirations of the people of Malabar. Now it is confined to Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Waynad districts (except the taluk of Manathavady). The goals of the university are to develop qualitatively and quantitatively the higher education and research in all spheres of human development with special reference to technical and technological sectors, and to promote art and culture particular to Kerala, to uplift the educationally backward people, and to expedite the process of human development in comparatively lesser developed regions of South Malabar. The University of Calicut is the biggest in Kerala in terms of both affiliation of colleges and student enrolment. Now there are 31 post graduate departments and 304 affiliated colleges. The total enrolment of students is more than 4 lakhs. C.H. Mohammed Koya Chair C.H.
