Preface The University of Calicut came into being on 23 rd July 1968. C.H. Mohamed Koya, the then Minister of Education, Kerala took the initiative to establish this University to cater to the higher educational aspirations of the people of Malabar. Now it is confined to Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Waynad districts (except the taluk of Manathavady). The goals of the university are to develop qualitatively and quantitatively the higher education and research in all spheres of human development with special reference to technical and technological sectors, and to promote art and culture particular to Kerala, to uplift the educationally backward people, and to expedite the process of human development in comparatively lesser developed regions of South Malabar. The University of Calicut is the biggest in Kerala in terms of both affiliation of colleges and student enrolment. Now there are 31 post graduate departments and 304 affiliated colleges. The total enrolment of students is more than 4 lakhs. C.H. Mohammed Koya Chair C.H. Mohammed Koya Chair for Studies on Developing Societies is constituted vide the order of the University of Calicut No.GAIV/B1/1530/2009 dated 14.09.2010 with an objective to serve the higher interests of the society and to perpetuate the hallowed memory of late C.H. Mohammed Koya (19271983) who was a great

UNIVERSITY OF CALICUT Calicut University P.O., 673 635 visionary, mass Reader, writer and able administrator. The Chair has been envisaged as a research centre to conduct studies on relevant topics. These studies will provide inputs for policy
formulations and social actions. The Chair will broadly focus on (a) developmental studies (b) cultural studies and (c) political studies. A fullfledged library and other amenities for research will be provided. Fellowships will be instituted. Many respected social scientists and academicians have offered their patronage and help. C.H. Mohamed Koya Chair for Studies on Developing Societies will give impetus to social empowerment of marginalised sections of the society. Besides the governing body under the Chairmanship of ViceChancellor of University, there is an Advisory Committee consisting of eminent scholars and academicians. The Grace Educational Association under the presidentship of Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal is the donor of the Chair. Few well wishers having close affinity with C.H. Mohamed Koya have contributed to raise the initial corpus fund of the Chair. Activities of C.H. Chair (a)
To conduct studies and research on developing societies such as minorities, dalits and tribes with an objective of using the inputs for social empowerment of weaker sections of various societies.
(b)
To conduct studies so as to collect and maintain effective database for future course of planning for the social activities.
(c)
To build a resourceful documentation and networking with other institutions having the relevant aspects of research and studies.
(d)
To organise courses, classes, seminars, study programs, exhibitions, workshops, gettogethers, outreaches, street plays, theater programs and other useful means on any subjects related to developing societies.
(e)
To publish books and periodicals relating to the developing societies particularly socially weaker sections.
In brief, the C.H. Mohammed Koya Chair for Studies on Developing Societies is an academic pursuit that provides a platform for intelligentia. It will initiate healthy interactions with scholars, experts and policy makers. This will be a futuristic sign post of thoughts and opinions and a dissemination centre of facts and figures.
