SYNTHESIS OF ABSTRACTS RICHELLE H. VERDEPRADO, PHD Director, University Community Development Office (UCDO) University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Bacolod City
Learning is not just a classroom thing. The ‘classroom’ is never just a room, but the entire world, and the learning is never done in a term or a school-year. Learning is for a lifetime and even after that, and beyond this planet too. The Asian Society of Teachers for Research, Inc. is indeed passionate in pursuing its commitment to advance learning and to make many rooms for learning. It is continuously promoting new knowledge and best practices through research. This Asian Conference on Institutional and Action Research (ACIAR 2017) is another concrete expression of how the people behind this gathering and those brave souls who have responded to their call have sustained the enthusiasm of learning. Through ACIAR, we are sharing that learning to the world through presentations, applications, publications and actual exchange of ideas and practices. Thus, the impact of ACIAR is something that we cannot just measure during and after the event. The words and numbers are more than just a combination of letters and symbols because they speak of the vastness of experiences inside and outside their learning institutions and study areas. This year’s theme, “Research Solutions to School Problems” highlights that research is never just an academic requirement but also an administrative, practical and social development tool. The topics and streams included: (1) Instruction, Research, Extension, Production, Outcomes Based Education (OBE);(2) Research including Pre-elementary, Elementary, High School, Junior and Senior High School; (3) Studies

on the Effectiveness of Vocational Education Programs, Employability and Productivity; and (4) Management Systems, Quality Assurance, Customer Relations, and Corporate Social Responsibility, among others. The researchers have responded to that greater challenge that comes after data have been gathered and results have been analyzed. Thus, the journey does not end with the presented or published output but in exploring solutions, discovering possibilities and improving quality of life. All of these fields of studies, though different and unique, are actually interrelated and overlapping. All of these topics have the ultimate goal of passing on learning to our students and developing that love of learning. The very essence of education is behavioral change for the better. Thus, there remains a great need to upgrade the brand of instruction and teaching strategies. For this year, we have studies that aimed to develop admission tests in Reading and Mathematics for Nursery 1, to enhance the Reading Comprehension Performance in Social Studies using Informative Text in Filipino and English, and the Relationship of Reading Comprehension and Ability to Solve Word Problems in Mathematics. The use of algebra tiles in teaching special products and factoring Polynomials on students Mathematical achievements and attitudes towards Mathematics was also explored. The students’ perception of the classroom learning activities was also determined with the hope of giving recommendations that will help the teacher prepare more effective classroom learning activities. These studies have shown that learning should continually and consciously be turned into an enjoyable experience to everyone and as an opportunity to promote self-confidence, fluency, and positive social skills. The direction should be improving knowledge, attitudes and skills. We have studies here that were focused on proposing teaching strategies by assessing the interactive and communicative skills of students and also on the perceptions of pupils on factors that affect their reluctance in English classes. These studies were thought of and were motivated by the teacher’s noble intention of promoting quality education. Adjustments in K to 12 curriculum in the Philippines specifically on how the students delivered their Performance Tasks were also given attention. Another study has found out the importance of giving meaningful homework on the development of the study habits of the grade school student and the need to formulate a concrete written policy on giving assignments. Then there was also a study that delved on the challenges encountered by students in their group assignments in Filipino subject and another one about the enhancement learning activity of the Department of Education on projectile motion was through the development of language-assist, composed of translations and choices. Indeed, we do not limit learning inside schools and within the class schedules.

Technology has made practices and even learning itself, a lot different than they were before. Some studies presented in this sphere were the evaluation of software whether it complies with the international standards or not, the Automated Student Record System, and the utilization of advanced technology in colleges and universities to increase efficiency in the processing and exchanging of records, maintaining data quality, and production. Included in the technologyrelated studies as well are the “Teaching of Multi-Paradigm Programming to CS Introductory Course: A Needs Assessment Analyses,” the Development of Mobile Learning Tool in C++: A Supplemental Tool in a Programming Course and the Effects of Flipped Classroom Approach on Students’ Problem Solving Skills in Mathematics. As our theme speaks about solutions, our research outputs have given us a different perspective of problems. Problems are indeed an invitation to do research, to evaluate and to innovate. The Test-Taking Apprehensions among Senior High School Second Language Learners in Rural Areas wants to address anxiety for it interferes with the learners’ daily functioning, school performance and relationships. If teachers can help them address these fears, then they can change the lives of their students forever. Another study determined the divergent thinking skills of college students and described how these skills could be used as performance assessment to assess their knowledge and skills. Moreover, we have a study related to building skills on grammar recognition errors and the factors affecting writing skills. In these studies, we can conclude that education is beyond diploma. It has to be coupled with life-skills building. On the other hand, finding solutions also include reflecting on the usual day to day experiences. The phenomenological study of the Aspects of Classroom Lived Experiences of Newly-Hired Teachers have revealed the joy and challenges of teaching and the need to mentor and monitor new teachers. The development that we are envisioning is something that strikes balance and sense of wholeness. We are journeying with students who have to be guided so that they will live a balance, fulfilled and fruitful life. Thus, teaching is not only a cognitive activity because in bringing learning to our students, we have to understand that they have social and emotional needs as well. A study about the Guidance Support System of Iloilo Science and Technology University Miagao Campus, has been conducted as part of its desire to ensure the holistic development of students. Still part of promoting holistic development, the study entitled “Beyond Comprehension: Basis for Developing a Reading Program” has provided insights on the benefits of wide reading for future profession. The “Assessment of MAPEH Program for Overweight Grade School Students: Input for Program Recommendations and Enhancement” has emphasized that engaging students into physical activities is a necessity especially that most

students are now getting hooked in mobile games. “The Effects of Conceptual Change Approach on the Understanding in Kinetics of Grade 8 Students,” has concluded that teaching methods and materials using conceptual change approach were more effective than conventional teaching methods to teach Kinetics in Physics. The conceptual change approach has enabled the students to acquire appropriate a better grasp of concepts. An important component of holistic development is spirituality and in the study that focused on the implication of integrating Face to Faith Program into the Grade School Christian Living Curriculum, it has been stressed that the faith should be inculcated in the educational program that contributes to the vastness of curricular subjects from humanities, religion, and cultural studies to social sciences. The academic experience is never complete if the learning will not be extended and shared to the ‘outside world.’ Community engagement is a continuous process that is built upon through professional helping relationship. Because it is a relationship, it is dynamic and solutions should be kept updated. Thus, it is undoubtedly an important field of study and it is good to note that a number of researchers have focused on their outreach programs. This included looking into their community-based literacy projects which are meant to strengthen classroom learning and how service would strengthen competence through volunteerism. An assessment of the financial management of the school has also impact to communities as it highlighted the best practices such as transparency, updated financial report, and quarterly meeting with the stakeholders. A study that assessed the employability and productivity of the graduates has also proven that education, aside from advancing personal growth is also contributing to economic growth and is one of the best ways of ensuring sustainable development of nations. The study regarding the leadership practices and technological skills of Bicol University Graduate School Students is also geared towards giving back to the communities. With these studies, we are reminded that the essence of continuously learning is to be of deeper service to the nation. The essence of gaining master’s and doctorate degrees is not just for titles or enhancement of personal credentials but to be transformed and be catalyst of transformation in the community. It is about making ‘others’ experience the meaning behind medals, recognition, awards and degrees. Since environmental issues should be a concern for everyone, a study about the solid waste management in Ilagan has highlighted that the academe should also be at the forefront in leading the community towards a well-nurtured planet. As we co-exist in the community, laws implemented can affect us either directly or indirectly. This can be exemplified by a study about Sin Tax Law and its effect to the consumption patterns of the consumers in the urban. A very crucial part in any development work is impact assessment and people in the academe can contribute so much expertise and heart in this field. The impact studies of the Central Philippine University Integrated Outreach Activity and the Recoletos Social Outreach Center (RESOURCE) Program of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos have assessed the effectiveness of their community engagement initiatives and have also provided insights on how to make their programs more sustainable and transformative. For mentors, the greatest fulfilment comes in knowing that we have done our best and we have brought impact to the lives of our students. We went beyond classroom teaching and explored the boundless world of research. Our research endeavour now is giving way to more questions, more relationships, more answers, more solutions, more learning and more reasons and means to love. Through research, learning expands its horizons and even surpasses what we thought to be the limitations or the best. Through research, learning becomes our legacy.

Para ta Aamu: A Language-Assisted Science 9 Enhanced Learning Activity on Projectile Motion MOIRA D. ABESMO http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1502-5708 duranomoira@gmail.com Bugang Integrated School Philippines Teaching and learning projectile motion is difficult when students cannot comprehend instructions and questions in English. To alleviate the situation, the DepEd learning activity on projectile motion was enhanced through the development of language-assist, composed of translations, choices and prompts that is designed to help students gain understanding of projectile motion as they perform the inquiry-based learning activity. This study was conducted with the 33 students enrolled in the regular class of Grade 9 in Bugang Integrated School S.Y. 2016-2017. It used a quasi-experimental design with the ADDIE model for the research and development of the instructional design. Survey, focus group discussion and pre/posttest were the instruments used. Pretest and posttest scores were analyzed with t-test while weighted average were computed for survey results. Focus group discussion enriched and supported statistical results. Initial survey and focus group discussion showed most students would rather have language-assist on-hand. Pretest and posttest scores revealed a significant increase in students’ score. Therefore, the contextualizing of learning activities with language-assist is efficient in effecting learning. Final survey and FGD indicated that while the language-assist is effective, it should also include assistance in comprehending equations since math is a language so often used in science. The Performance of the Grade 9 Students in the Special Program in the Arts Schools of DepEd Northern Mindanao, Philippines GERRY POL P. CAINOY http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1618-6212 gerrypolphd@gmail.com University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Philippines The study is a descriptive research which endeavors to examine and evaluate the music instruction and performance of the Grade 9 Special Program in the Arts in DepEd Region X, Philippines. This study was conducted in the 15 pioneering SPA schools in the Region. Grade 9 SPA students were given 2 sets of assessment tools to evaluate their knowledge on music theory and singing/playing ability. There are six indicators, the melody gets the highest spot in both instrumental and vocal. It is followed by rhythm in instrumental and musicianship in vocal. In instrumental, stage presence got the lowest mean, 3.91. In vocal, timbre was the lowest, with 3.97 only. Most of them passed the written exam. Forty-six of them satisfactorily got 26.1%, scoring 25-29. Forty of the got very satisfactory and six students almost obtained perfect score. Only 1.7% got the score of 5-9. The mean is 28.01. This mean implied that the grade 9 SPA student mastered the fundamentals of music theory. MAYUGA http://orcid.org/0000-0001-7607-6632 mikekeivinmayuga01@gmail.com Wenceslao Trinidad National High School Laurel District, Philippines It has always been a desire and dream of the teachers of English to help their students in producing an organized, neat and error-free piece of writing. The study aimed to recognize the errors in grammar and determine the factors that affect the writing skills of Grade 7 students in their written compositions. Respondents of the study were the 180 randomly chosen Grade 7 students of Wenceslao Trinidad National High School in Laurel, Batangas, Philippines. The study was done during the school year 2016-2017. The descriptive study is anchored on the Theory of Corder’s explanation of errors and mistakes. According to him errors occur because of gaps in the learner’s English knowledge whereas mistakes occur when the learner has not yet learned how to master a certain grammatical form (Ellis & Barkhuizen 2005). The study showed that majority of the students (24%) committed mistakes in verb tense and form. However, incomprehensibility of grammar rules with a weighted mean of 3.55 is the most influential factor that affects the writing skills of the students. Based on the findings, the researcher proposed a Writing Skill Development Module which will help the teachers to strengthen the knowledge of their students. It will be a great use to boost students’ enthusiasm to develop and sharpen their writing skills. Keywords: Education, English, grammatical errors, development module, descriptive design, Philippines

Teaching of Multi-Paradigm Programming to CS Introductory Course: A Needs Assessment Analyses MARK DERVIN N. MINGOY http://orcid.org/0000-0003-0062-5150 markdervinmingoy@rocketmail.com Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology, Philippines Computer programming is indeed a difficult task which leads to the conduct of many studies to lessen and eradicate its difficulty and complexity. This study aims to assess the current state of teaching programming as well as the possibility of the inclusion of teaching multi-paradigm programming in the CS introductory course. The study was conducted to the respondents of the study were the professors/instructors who were handling programming subjects in the different HEIs in the Province of Masbate, Philippines. The study revealed that varied single programming paradigms were used in the CS introductory course. The respondent’s basis for choosing such programming paradigm were its marketability in the future taking into consideration the abilities and skills of the novice programmers. The results further showed that most of the programming used to teach the CS introductory course was the imperative programming paradigm. The chance to design and learn the topdown way of thinking, easiness to adjust to another programming paradigm, elimination of the paradigm-shift and increase of ability to learn new programming languages were the usefulness of the integration of the multiparadigm programming concept in the CS introductory course. Beyond that usefulness, some were negligent of the concept of the programming paradigm shift and argued its negative effect such as the mastery of none to the programming language, confusion in comparing programming paradigms and the time constraints in its inclusion to the CS introductory course. Effectiveness of Social Communicative Approach on Selected Reading Comprehension Skills of Grade 7 Students ALBERT G. MUSICO http://orcid.org/0000-0003-4138-3864 albertmusico29@gmail.com Rizal Memorial Colleges Philippines The study made use of the experimental method using pretest/posttest control group design. It determined the effects of social communicative approach on selected reading comprehension skills of Grade 7 students. The study made use of a teacher made test for the pretest and posttests. The experimental group was exposed to the treatment while the control group made use of the standard way of teaching. Results revealed that one of the basic difficulties in attempting to give a definition of critical reading is the fact that the concept has no fixed boundaries. The study divulged that very few explore the more hardhitting end of the continuum. For children to become adept to critical reading, they must be guided from the beginning of their experiences with reading until their mastery. In reality, there are opportunities to sharpen and improve critical reading powers. The social communicative approach in teaching reading can be recommended for use in this learning process. For the 21st century learner’s reading is a multifaceted process that develops only with practice. There are certain aspects of reading, such as fluency and word recognition, which can be learned in a few years. These basics must be mastered but at the same time reading comprehension should be emphasized in the process. Test-Taking Apprehensions among Senior High School Second Language Learners in Rural Areas CEASAR IAN P. SABILLO http://orcid.org/0000-0002-5729-0227 ceasarsas53@gmail.com Holy Trinity College of General Santos City Philippines This qualitative phenomenological study focused on the test-taking apprehensions of the senior high school students of selected schools in Central Glan District. It was anchored on the queries of how the key informants described their experiences before and while taking the test, their experiences in relation to the physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral categories, and the way these experiences affected their test performance. Based on their personal experiences, physiological tension and somatic symptoms, coupled with worry, alarm, fear of failure, and misfortune occurred before and during test situations. Regardless of the distance, age, gender, and academic performance, they have encountered the same problems. If school teachers failed to take actions to help the students with test anxiety, their life becomes a constant state of worry, fear, and dread. Eventually, if the anxiety is not addressed, the person’s thinking interferes with the learners’ daily functioning, including work, school, and social activities, and relationships. As teachers to these students who go through difficult situations, we can provide them professional help which can help them with their fear. These may not only be effective in helping the persons with test taking apprehensions to recover, but also prevent the recurrence of fear.
