Shona Leitch

Wednesday 28 March 2012 Frances Law Frances Law will talk about the influences which have shaped her work from her inspiring beginnings at Denny High School to the magical island of Iona on the west coast of Scotland. Last year Law was shortlisted for the prestigious Aspect Prize, Scotland’s largest painting prize, which culminated in an impressive exhibition at the Fleming collection in Mayfair, London. She will talk about the journey which led her there and the opportunities which have emerged as a result. 11am -12noon Green Room, Callendar House Free

Shona Leitch works from her studio in Perthshire creating sculptural forms inspired by the curves and textures in the natural world. Her work is flowing and organic, with surfaces drawn from nature. More recently her work has moved towards the figurative, creating detailed heads and torsos which are classically driven yet still contemporary. Since graduating from Gray’s School of Art in 1991 she has exhibited internationally, created commissions and continues to produce her own work whilst also tutoring regular classes and workshops.

Beyond Appearance “Painting is like a journey where I set off to find out, to learn, to accept the unexpected. Each painting is a new start, venturing into unexplored territory. The method by which my work comes into being is an organic process where the shape and form, colour and scale make contact with light and shade allowing space and structure to develop. I seek to create spaciousness, grace, lightness and openness in my work.” Born in Denny, Stirlingshire, Frances Law’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the UK and abroad. In 2007 her work was represented at the Qi Bashi International Arts Festival in China as part of a Scottish/ Chinese cultural exchange. She has won several major awards and prizes including winner of the Scottish National Art Prize in 2008, and more recently shortlisted as one of the finalists of the prestigious Aspect Prize. This exhibition at the Park Gallery will also bring together Law’s interest in working with assemblage and installation. Her focus of attention is on the essence of life, the extraordinary contained in the ordinary, the beauty at the heart of the natural world.
