Welcome

Film is one of the many ways we tell stories to ourselves about ourselves and one of film’s many pleasures is the way in which new stories can emerge as the world around them changes or the stories become newly relevant to our lives in different times and in ways perhaps not imagined by the people who made them. Who would have thought that, 65 years on, Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life would chime so profoundly with today’s headlines of global markets, bankers’ greed, and popular demonstrations. In its new incarnation the Hippodrome has established a tradition of showing this film every Christmas as folk look for stories that remind them of the true meaning of the season. And despite the gloomy headlines we’re doing our best to help you feel festive with a host of classics old and new: The latest Aardman animation Arthur Christmas, the delightful Nativity! (that never fails to make me cry), Disney’s A Christmas Carol and for Christmas Eve what could be better than a family outing to Cinderella the ballet, or a treat for the little ones with a cosy double-bill of The Snowman and Father Christmas. The catering team will be serving mince pies and hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows (for an extremely reasonable £2.75) and we’ve even arranged for Father Christmas himself to make an appearance. Talking of festivities, the Hippodrome has a very special birthday coming up. In March 2012 the Hippodrome will be 100 and we’ll be kicking off a year of centenary celebrations with a birthday bash and the second Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema – see page 15 for dates and details of how to register for more information. After the great success of our first festival we know you know it’s going to be good. If you can’t wait for your silent cinema fix we will be screening a new silent film that has got everyone talking... It’s my top pick this season and if The Artist doesn’t clean up at the Academy Awards I’ll eat my Charlie Chaplin bowler hat.

Something else special will be unveiled in 2012 too... we are very excited that, thanks to a grant from Regional Screen Scotland, the Hippodrome is now the proud home to a brand new system of satellite technology that will allow us to receive live transmissions of arts events from all over the world. We start with a season of three plays from the National Theatre (see pages 12-13). If you haven’t already experienced live theatre in the cinema it is perhaps hard to imagine. Essentially you have the feeling of occasion and buzz enjoyed at the theatre as the crowds arrive, the usher announces it is time to take your seat and the curtain draws back. When you laugh in your cinema seat, audiences around the world are laughing with you and you have the added bonus of behind the scenes insights and interviews. The Hippodrome is the perfect setting for these live screenings with its stately decor and intimate atmosphere, not to mention our café and bar where you can pre-order your interval refreshments! For special events this season, after her wonderful and popular introduction to Jane Eyre at FTH Cinema we have invited Dr Sarah Edwards back to give a talk before our screening of another Brontë classic: Wuthering Heights; whilst rounding off the programme is an exclusive screening of new, independent BAFTA nominated Scottish feature Electric Man which will be introduced by the director David Barras, joined by members of the cast and crew for a Q&A. There is not space here to expand on our wide selection of excellent bio-pics, ghost stories, actor/director dramas, thrillers, action features, animations and family films so I’ll leave it to you to browse with your programme in one hand and you diary in the other. I’ll just briefly mention our jeely jar special (2-for-1 with clean jam jar and matching lid) Bridge to Terabithia (an excellent film that didn’t make the box-office splash it so deserved) and our season’s Hippodrome Youth Ambassador selection: Amélie – a favourite of 20-year-old Melissa Russell and cinema-goers the world over. The Awakening

The Deep Blue Sea

Ghostbusters

Set in post-war England during the ‘20s, when many of the bereaved sought solace in spiritualism, this spooky ghost story follows Florence (Rebecca Hall), a hoax investigator committed to debunking the supernatural. When she is asked to investigate alleged sightings of a ghostly boy at a remote boarding school, secrets begin to unravel, and a series of spectral encounters force her to question all her rational beliefs. A superior chiller that relies on the accrued menace of the gloomy grounds and sinister echoing corridors, rather than flashy shocks.

In this film adaptation of the Terence Rattigan play, Oscar winner Weisz (‘The Constant Gardener’) plays Hester Collyer - one of the greatest women’s roles, made famous by the likes of Vivien Leigh - and turns in a profoundly intimate performance. Hester is the former wife of a judge and the nearly abandoned lover of an ex-WWII pilot. The story of her overpowering, desperate love is the close focus for master chronicler of post-war England, Davies, who sensitively expands the psychological life of the heroine with luminous, masterfully composed takes and brilliantly realised flashbacks.

Welcome re-issue from Glasgow based film distributors Park Circus of this peerless comedy about a motley crew of university parapsychologists who lose their research grant and decide to set up a low-rent business as Manhattan ghost catchers. Great comedy dialogue, great story, great family entertainment, this holiday film is just as good as you remember it to be, with hilarious set-pieces (Sigourney Weaver’s possessed seductress, the Godzilla-like Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man...) and best of all: the wonderfully deadpan Bill Murray.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (cert tbc)

quirky romance in which a couple of misfits are set up on a blind-date and then stumble through layers of low self-esteem towards love, under the tutelage of their more assured married friends: Clyde and Lucy. Hoffman himself plays the monumentally awkward Jack, and Amy Ryan (‘Win Win’) is the woman he hopes to woo in this intimate and painfully honest ensemble piece, which transcends the apparently slight subject material thanks to the extraordinary performances of all four principals.

The first film in a three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster ‘The Millennium Trilogy’ previously adapted for the screen in Sweden. This new US version is directed by David Fincher (‘The Social Network’, ‘Fight Club’ ‘Se7en’) and stars a grizzled Daniel Craig and suitably inscrutable Rooney Mara in the lead roles. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (cert tbc)

The Well-Diggers Daughter

The fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series delivers everything you would expect from this massively successful spy movie franchise... A terrorist bomb destroys the Kremlin whilst agent Ethan Hunt is on an undercover operation in Moscow. The Russian government deems the attack an undeclared act of war, prompting the US government to initiate "ghost protocol", disavowing the entire Impossible Mission Force. Hunt and his fourman team must operate outside the agency's command structure to uncover the truth about the bombing.

Daniel Auteuil first came to non-French speaking audiences notice as the unscrupulous nephew in the ‘Jean de Florette’ adaptations of the books by Marcel Pagnol. Here Auteuil returns to the writer’s work in a beautiful story about a father torn between his sense of honour and his deep love for his saintly daughter who gets ‘in trouble’ with the wealthy son of a shopkeeper. Auteuil’s magnificent directorial debut is totally in tune with the source material and the Provence landscape, sweeping the viewer along with a tale filled with tenderness and sorrow.

The Iron Lady (cert tbc) ‘Mamma Mia’ director Phyllida Lloyd gives us a surprising and intimate portrait of Britain’s first and only UK female PM: Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep). One of the 20th century's most influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere, smashing through barriers of gender and class and making herself heard in a male dominated world. The original screenplay by rising star Abi Morgan (screenwriter ‘Shame’ pg 8, and TV’s ‘The Hour’) concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is an insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman. War Horse (cert tbc)

Mother and Child

Coriolanus

An epic film adaptation of the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, inspired by the horror and sadness of a little-explored detail of WWI. Set against a sweeping canvas of war-torn Europe, Spielberg’s film charts the remarkable friendship between a horse and the young man who tames and trains him. When the pair are separated, we follow their extraordinary journey through the nightmarish war, and the horse’s far-reaching encounters with British, German and French alike, before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No-Man's Land.

Emotionally authentic performances from all the leads distinguish this strong drama about three women variously affected by parenthood. Karen (Bening) is haunted by her decision to give up her child for adoption decades earlier when she was a young teenager, Lucy (Washington) is a childless married woman who longs to experience the joys of motherhood, and successful lawyer Elizabeth (Watts) who never knew her biological mother, feels bitter and harddone-by. A clear-eyed drama that avoids sentimentality in its examination of the maternal connection.

Award-winning star of ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘The English Patient’, Ralph Fiennes directs for the first time and reprises his stage performance as Shakespeare’s Coriolanus in this imaginative and audacious update situated in a contemporary war-zone and shot by British cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (‘The Hurt Locker’). Coriolanus is an arrogant soldier and hero to the people of Rome, whom he despises. When the fatally proud warrior is out-manoeuvred and banished by politicians in collusion with his own mother, he offers his services to sworn enemy Aufidius (played by Scottish actionhero star Gerard Butler).

The Artist

Amélie

Man on a Ledge

With 5 star reviews from audiences and critics everywhere ‘The Artist’ is a spellbinding, joyous homage to the glory and romance of Hollywood’s silent era. George Valentin is a dashing silent movie superstar with a raft of swashbuckling roles under his belt. But the advent of the talkies destroys his career and he loses everything... except his memories of an obscure young woman who once held a torch for him and for whom stardom now seems to beckon. Delightful, inventive and funny – a reminder of the true potential of cinema for storytelling.

Irresistably entertaining, quirky and visually inventive, this charming romance is frequently hilarious and brimming with humanity. A contemporary classic programmed by 20-year-old Melissa Russell, 3rd year media student at Forth Valley College, born in the same year her film choice was made. Melissa says: “This is a beautiful story of a young woman who finds that her quest to help others has derailed her own chances of happiness and even love. Audrey Tautou’s performance as Amélie is what makes French cinema so enjoyable.”

A nail-biting thriller in which ex-cop, and now wrongly-accused fugitive, Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) stands on the ledge of a high-rise Manhattan hotel, threatening to jump, while a personally requested NYPD negotiator (Elizabeth Banks) tries to talk him down. The longer they are on the dizzying ledge, the more convinced she becomes that things are not as straightforward as they might seem. Hollywood stalwart Ed Harris is the baddie in this pacy, suspenseful, high-concept drama with plenty of satisfying twists.

Shame

J.Edgar (cert tbc)

W.E. (cert tbc)

From the Oscar and BAFTA winning producers of ‘The King’s Speech’ and the BAFTA winning director of ‘Hunger’ comes this compelling examination of the nature of need, desire and one man’s sexual compulsion. Fassbender plays Brandon who lives a glossy, self-contained life arranged around a series of emotion-free pick-ups. The unannounced arrival of Brandon’s wayward sister (Mulligan - ‘An Education’) disrupts his controlled lifestyle and his world begins to spiral into chaos. The pairing of Mulligan and Fassbender is the electrifying centre of this unsettling, intense film - stylish and brilliant.

A bio-pic about the notorious crime-fighting pioneer, PR genius and manipulator, responsible for rolling out the shameful McCarthy era US witch-hunts. Clint Eastwood’s latest drama, clearly indebted to ‘Citizen Kane’, focuses on the compelling human story of the head of the FBI: an emotionally repressed man, struggling with his own homosexuality, whose relationship with Clyde Tolson would, if brought to light, have destroyed his image as upholder of moral rectitude. A committed performance from diCaprio manages to hold in fine balance our revulsion and fascination for this conflicted and vengeful historical figure.

An elegantly woven romantic drama linking a contemporary married woman’s yearning for true love, with the passionate affair between King Edward VIII and divorcée Wallis Simpson (as touched on in ‘The King’s Speech’). Madonna’s bold film is lavishly staged, and dominated by a number of majestic performances including an impressive D’Arcy as the conflicted heir to the throne, and rising star Riseborough (‘Made in Dagenham’) as the bewitching, ambitious yet compassionate Mrs Simpson. An entertaining tale tackling the ever-relevant themes of love, fame and disappointment.

Puss in Boots

Red Dog

+ I Tawt I Taw A Puddy Tat

Long before he met Shrek, the notorious fighter, lover and outlaw Puss in Boots became a hero when he set off on an adventure with the street-wise Kitty Softpaws and the mastermind Humpty Dumpty to save his town. This is the true story of The Cat, The Myth, The Legend... The Boots. Fairy-tale and nursery rhyme characters are brilliantly transposed into a swashbuckling adventure with a clever script to appeal to young and old, and the impeccable comic timing of Banderas’ charming Spanish rogue.

Based on the book by Louis de Bernères and inspired by a true story ‘Red Dog’ is the wonderful and uplifting, all-ages tale of a dog, who united a disparate, warring local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master. Full of comedy, romance and heartwarming drama the film has won numerous awards, stormed the Australian box office and beguiled audiences the world over with its wit, storytelling and star turn from Koko the dog.

Arthur Christmas

Nativity!

A happy holiday treat for young and old, this is the brand new, joyous and very funny animation from Aardman. Arthur Christmas reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child's question: 'So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?' The answer: an exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole, a company run by CEO Santa who is soon to pass the mantle on to his youngest son, Arthur. But the Mission Impossible style gift delivery system accidentally leaves a child present-less and so Arthur must embark on an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.

In this British feel-good Christmas film, primary school teacher Paul Maddens (Martin Freeman) is given the biggest challenge of his life - staging the school's musical version of the Nativity. As competition with the posh local school heats up, Paul makes up a little white lie and claims that his ex-girlfriend, a “Hollywood Producer”, is coming to see his show to turn it into a film… the only problem is: they haven't spoken in years! To make matters worse Paul's newly appointed classroom assistant is SUPER keen and is making matters more complicated as Maddens finds himself in the midst of squabbling parents and over-excited children who must join forces in their bid for fame and fortune. A festive delight that effortlessly captures the spirit of the season.

It’s A Wonderful Life

The Snowman / Father Christmas

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a screen outing for this much-loved cine-fable. It is Christmas Eve and George Bailey (Stewart), dedicated, up-standing family-man, finds his beneficent company in danger of collapse, and contemplates suicide in the belief that it would be better for everyone if he was dead. But the prayers of his loved ones summon a novice guardian-angel named Clarence, keen to earn his wings by helping George. And so it passes that Clarence sets about showing George what things would have been like had he never been born… Sixty-five years after the film’s original release the system of ethics demonstrated by Jimmy Stewart’s banker - compassion, selflessness and dignity – seem more relevant than ever.

Comedy of Errors

She Stoops to Conquer

by William Shakespeare

by Oliver Goldsmith

Two sets of twins, separated at birth, collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. Antipholus and his servant Dromio arrive in a foreign land in search of their brothers. To these outsiders, the buzzing metropolis appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound. Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors' sense of turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus.

Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old friend’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective sonin-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he is a charmer with those of lower status. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.

A Christmas Carol

Peter Pan

An animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions with a voice cast including Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman and Colin Firth.

Visually impressive and faithful live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s play in which the Darling family children are visited by Peter Pan, who takes them to Never Never Land, home to Tinkerbell, the Lost Boys and evil Pirate Captain Hook.

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Even better than the original, this sequel finds the New York escapees desperate to return to their Central Park zoo but stranded instead on the untamed plains of Africa. All your favourite characters, not least the team of wise-cracking penguins.

The Chipmunks and Chipettes end up marooned in a tropical paradise where they discover their new turf is not as deserted as it seems. Check out their inimitable renditions of Lady Ga Ga and Destiny’s Child numbers!

Millions

Hugo (cert tbc)

A must-see family film from UK director Danny Boyle (‘Slumdog’) about a young Irish boy who finds a stash of pounds just days before the currency switches to Euros. An excellent fable about humanity, charity and doing the right thing.

The exquisitely crafted tale of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station, caught up in a magical adventure and trying to keep one step ahead of Sasha Baron Cohen’s hilarious constable.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Bridge to Terabithia

Top notch animation and a pacy story featuring Manny, Diego and Sid… When Sid's attempt to adopt three dinosaur eggs gets him abducted by their real mother to an underground lost world, his friends attempt to rescue him.

Faithful adaptation of a beloved children's novel and a powerful portrayal of love, loss, and imagination. Two mis-fit children develop an unlikely friendship and together create an imaginary land where they can escape the bullying and loneliness of their lives at home and school.

Dir. Peter Ackerman / 2009 / 1h 34m

Dir. Gabor Csupo / 2007 / 1h 36m / scary scenes & scenes of emotional distress

Jurassic Park

The Goonies

Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller with state-of-the-art special effects and a cracking story about two dinosaur experts invited by an eccentric millionaire to preview his new ‘jurassic’ amusement park on a remote island, with his grandchildren in tow.

Spielberg-influenced adventure about a group of kids who find a pirate treasure map and set off on a search for buried treasure in true mini-Indiana Jones style. A must for kids and ‘80s nostalgiaseeking grown-ups.

J Jeely Jars start at 11:00. All tickets £2.25. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. We have named our Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics in honour of this tradition. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below).
