The Hippodrome, Bo’ness

2

On the 11th March 1912 Louis Dickson opened the doors for patrons to his magnificent picture palace - the Hippodrome Bo’ness: Scotland’s first cinema, designed by architect Matthew Steele. “Unique in two respects” as a reporter noted in coverage of the day, “first in the form in which it was erected, and second, in the purpose for which it has been erected”. The article goes on to applaud “the internal arrangements” which were “thoroughly complete and up-to-date”, and the standard of entertainment drawing “great crowds”. We learn from the piece that Mr Dickson thanked the assembled for their support and reassured them that “he did not cater for any vulgarity whatsoever”. He was then presented with “a little timepiece” and “the entertainment then proceeded and was heartily enjoyed by all”.

And here we are, 100 years on, celebrating the centenary of the country’s oldest cinema, opening the doors to our wonderfully supportive audiences and presenting the finest films, in the beautifully restored interior, with the latest facilities of sound, projection, and from this March, live satellite presentation. We think Louis Dickson would be proud! The Hippodrome’s centenary could not be celebrated if it had not been for the vision of the local community, Falkirk Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund who have enabled this stunning building to be fully restored as the Critical Project of the Bo’ness Townscape Heritage Initiative.

The Hippodrome’s 100th anniversary is a fitting end to the multi million pound regeneration of historic Bo’ness town centre project, for the Bo’ness community, the wider Falkirk area and for Scotland. Here’s to the next 100 years… to be heartily enjoyed by all! To celebrate the centenary we are delighted to announce Hippodrome 100, supported by Creative Scotland: a special year-long programme of workshops, public art interventions, screenings in unusual places, touring exhibitions and more events inspired by the Hippodrome and its place in the nation’s cinema going heritage. See page 4 and pages 16 - 20 for details of the first of these.

Over the coming months, we will be updating the Hippodrome web pages with details of the Hippodrome 100 programme. You can receive updates directly by joining our @FalkirkCultural. mailing list and following us on

1912 was a note-worthy year. World War I was just around the corner, HMS Titanic embarked on her maiden voyage, Cptn. Scott and his team were outdone in the race to the South Pole, author Bram Stoker died and, in the world of film, Gene Kelly and screen-writer/ director Alexander Mackendrick were born, and Universal Studios and the British Board of Film Classification were established. Hippodrome programmer Alison Strauss picked seven films inspired by each of these momentous events, and the public has been busy voting for their preferred title in the Hippodrome 100 Centenary Poll, in association with the Journal and Gazette… Tonight, to celebrate 100 years as the jewel in the crown of Scottish cinema going, we screen the winning film - a guaranteed classic. See www.falkirkcommunitytrust.org/hippodrome100 and the Journal and Gazette for the title announcement. Join us and be part of Hippodrome history! Sunday 11 March 19:30 Tickets: £5.55 (£4.25 conc.)

The Descendants The king of American indie comedy, Alexander Payne (‘Election’, ‘Sideways’) moves to more tender terrain with this tale of Matt King, a man forced to take on parenting duties when his wife is comatosed after a water-skiing accident. Clooney gives a warm and genuine performance as Matt, as he shambles to rise to the challenge of shepherding his two wayward daughters, only to learn that his wife may have been keeping secrets from him. While its themes of familial, and even cultural responsibility, run throughout, the tone is pleasingly light. Dir. My Week With Marilyn

We Need to Talk About Kevin

In 1956 Marilyn Monroe (Williams) begins filming ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ with her co-star Laurence Olivier (Branagh), and eager young pup Colin Clark (Redmayne, TV’s ‘Birdsong’) finds himself as a production assistant at the centre of the stormy set, as well as confidante to the icon in her guises of inspired actress, sexpot and much-troubled woman trying to escape the hangers-on and demands of work. Williams’ and Branagh’s remarkable performances as the superstars should not be missed in this captivating slice of celebrity life.

Multi-award winning Scottish director Lynne Ramsay successfully adapts the weighty novel about a woman who reluctantly sets aside her career to start a family only to find her new baby challenges her from the start. A horrific act by the 15-year-old Kevin is at the apex of a narrative that examines motherhood, nature/nurture and grief. A rescheduled screening of this fearless, riveting and brilliantly structured film with a remarkable colour and sound design and a blistering performance from Tilda Swinton.

The Woman in Black

Carnage

The Raven

Susan Hill’s completely terrifying novella and subsequent stage play is given a bigscreen makeover by writer Jane Goldman who successfully adds a new dimension to the central character of Arthur Kipps (a deeply haunting and haunted Daniel Radcliffe) and, indeed, to the book’s ending, without sacrificing an ounce of the terror. The dismal foggy landscape and bruisecoloured house conspire with the creepy half glimpses of the spectral woman to create a classically frightening ghost story, where every shot hints at something sinister lurking around the corner.

Adapted by Polanski and playwright Reza (‘Art’), from her own award-winning play, this consummate four-hander is a brilliantly sustained drama exploring the flaws of two middle-class couples, convening in a small apartment to thrash out what to do about a bit of playground violence involving their respective sons. What starts out as a civilised meeting rapidly descends in to an ugly but hilarious verbal spat revealing each character’s prejudices, faults and weaknesses. Foster and Winslet are a joy to watch with every gesture and inflection straining for decorum, and failing.

In 19th century Baltimore, Detective Fields (Evans) investigates a brutal crime that resembles a fictional murder, described in gory detail by struggling writer Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack). Soon realizing a serial killer is using Poe's writings as his bloody inspiration, Fields enlists the author's help. But when someone close to Poe is marked as the murderer's next victim, the writer must call on all his creative powers to solve the case before it is too late. McTeigue (‘V for Vendetta’) directs this psychological thriller with a suitable dose of macabre.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Martha Marcy May Marlene

From the director of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ comes this delightful film about a disparate group of pensioners (played by a dreamteam of Britain’s finest senior actors) attracted by the promise of a luxurious sanctuary in India. Recently widowed Judi Dench, lonely Tom Wilkinson and grumpy Maggie Smith are amongst the guests who find their preconceptions overturned by the ever optimistic young manager Sonny (Dev Patel / ‘Slumdog’) in this big-hearted and captivating film.

A bold and ambiguous drama about an enigmatic young woman who breaks away from the clutches of an isolated and cultish farm community to the apparent refuge of her straight-laced sister. Haunted by disturbing memories and increasing paranoia, this damaged character struggles to re-assimilate with her conservative family. Meanwhile the audience is likewise disorientated by creeping tension, and subtle narrative shifts between the past, near-past and present, following the this divided character as she moves from being Martha to Marcy May and finally to Marlene. Truly excellent!

Dir. John Madden / UK / 2011 / 2h 3m With: Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie

The Decoy Bride

Safe House

We Bought a Zoo

When the wedding of Hollywood star Lara to English author (Tennant) is sabotaged by a paparazzo, the couple decide to relocate the nuptials away from prying hordes to a tiny Scottish Island. Local girl Katie (Kelly Macdonald) is recruited as a ‘decoy bride’ in a cunning plan to throw the media off the scent. Described as “’Bridget Jones’ meets ‘Local Hero’” this frothy romantic comedy is an uncomplicated delight from the director of TV’s ‘Ugly Betty’.

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in this action-thriller about dangerous CIA renegade Tobin Frost (Washington) who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house he is remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds), aspiring to be a fully fledged case officer, escapes with him and the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead. High octane thrills with an electric pairing of super cool Denzel and cinema’s hottest pin-up Reynolds.

Cameron Crowe (‘Jerry Maguire’) directs an amazing and true story about a single dad who decides his family needs a fresh start, and moves himself and his two children to… a zoo! Matt Damon brings an endearing tenderness to his role as the grieving man who works to turn around the dilapidated zoo and makes a second family of a collection of 200 animals along with the motley staff who look after them. An affectionate, heart-warming slice of family entertainment.

Trishna

The Kid with a Bike

In Darkness

Returning to Thomas Hardy for inspiration, after his haunting version of ‘Jude’, master director Winterbottom re-imagines the classic ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ in contemporary Rajasthan, with this watchable and successful adaptation. Peasant-girl Trishna (Freida Pinto/’Slumdog’) is seduced by bored, wealthy young British businessman Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed) who has come to India to work in his father's hotel business. Trishna finds herself at the mercy of an increasingly misogynistic Jay and a conflicted society in this triumphant and devastating melodrama.

An emotionally rending social-realist drama about 11-year-old Cyril who has two missions: to find the father who left him temporarily in a children's home, and to be reunited with his beloved bike. By chance he meets kindly Samantha, who is so agonised by his plight that she takes the boy under her wing. Tough, spare and touching the film follows the relationship between the two as Samantha fights for the boy’s childhood.

An epic tale of the two-time Oscar nominee director’s wartime homeland which tells the story of Leopold, a Polish sewer worker who, although anti-Semitic, hides a handful of Jews in the sewers in exchange for a monthly fee. But as suspicions amongst his superiors rise, and the war takes a sour turn across Poland, Leopold’s family and life become targets. Familiar now in the UK as the director of high-end TV episodes for series including ‘The Wire’ and ‘The Killing’, this harrowing, suspenseful drama is one of Holland’s finest.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (cert tbc)

American Pie: Reunion (cert tbc)

Feel-good romantic drama with top-notch leads bound to charm audiences with their respective portrayals of fisheries expert (Ewan McGregor) and the lonely consultant (Emily Blunt) who approaches him to help realize a sheikh's seemingly absurd vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert. The pair are soon joined by an overzealous press secretary (scene stealing Kristin Scott Thomas) who latches on to what she realises is the perfect good news story. Modern eco-issues intertwine pleasingly with old-style political intrigues and romance.

It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle have married, Kevin and Vicky said goodbye, Oz and Heather have grown apart, while Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home for their high-school reunion and in one long-overdue, weekend, they will discover what has changed. Crude, rude, hilarious and a must for fans of the previous three comedy classics.

Dark Shadows (cert tbc)

Laura

Great Expectations

Tim Burton’s film version of the ‘60s gothic cult TV soap with a cracking support cast including Jonny Lee Miller, Christopher Lee and Alice Cooper. Eighteenth century Barnabas (Depp) is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique (Eva Green/’Casino Royale’). Angelique, a witch, turns Barnabas into a vampire and buries him, where he lies entombed for two centuries, emerging into the changed world of 1972, and returning to his once-grand estate and the dysfunctional remnants of his family.

In this stylish whodunit classic, in which nothing is quite as it seems, tough New York detective McPherson investigates the murder of beautiful advertising executive Laura. As he interrogates a colourful collection of suspects, each nursing possible motives, he becomes fascinated with the enigmatic victim. We present the new BFI restoration of this brilliantly witty noir, glorying in a cool dialogue, a haunting score, sophisticated social satire and a fabulous twist. “One of the subtlest, most sophisticated and most invigoratingly acerbic Hollywood crime movies ever made” (Geoff Andrew).

To mark the occasion of the annual Bo’ness Victorian Street Fair on Sunday 27th May the Hippodrome is screening one of the finest screen adaptations of a Dickens novel ever made. The screening will be introduced by Dr Sarah Edwards (Hippodrome favourite and regular commentator for the BBC, Channel 4 and FilmFour) who will discuss the source novel’s themes in the context of this and other film and TV adaptations. Lean's brilliant adaptation follows the fortunes of Pip, the escaped convict he befriends, the eccentric recluse Miss Havisham and her stony-hearted niece Estella.

Meanwhile the Muppets have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, and Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management. Kermit, Walter and their allies must stage the Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theatre. Expect celebrity cameos, lots of laughs and all-round Muppet-magic.

Pina

Bombay Beach (cert tbc)

A moving, powerful and intelligent tribute, by Wim Wenders, to the unique and inspiring German choreographer Pina Bausch: one of modern dance's most groundbreaking artists, who was diagnosed with cancer and died a few days before filming began. Her work incorporated earth, water, stones and city streets into music and movement and Wender’s homage, articulated by the many admiring dancers she worked with, affords accessible insight to this monumental talent, whilst letting the artist's work speak for itself thanks to gorgeous performance sequences.

An unforgettable and beautiful film about a small community living on the fringes of the lost American Dream. On the surface this is a document of extreme rural poverty in the bizarre, Californian shanty-community of a formerly-thriving resort. Ultimately though this is nothing less than a lyrical wonder inviting us to get to know its subjects, with sensitivity and tenderness but never sanctimony. The lives of a troubled young boy, a teen refugee from gangland LA and a whisky-soaked redneck are gradually revealed and occasionally represented by sequences of dance that perfectly express the individuals performing them – the documentary subjects themselves.

Comedy of Errors

She Stoops to Conquer

by William Shakespeare

by Oliver Goldsmith

Two sets of twins, separated at birth, collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. Antipholus and his servant Dromio arrive in a foreign land in search of their brothers. To these outsiders, the buzzing metropolis appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound. Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors' sense of turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus.

Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old friend’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective sonin-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he is a charmer with those of lower status. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.

Frankenstein

Cinderella (suitable for all)

by Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley

Recorded live, and re-scheculed for our summer time programme, this spellbinding production from the Birmingham Royal Ballet with Prokofiev’s sumptuous score, is choreographed by the company’s award-winning artistic director David Bintley, and features a dazzling array of sets and costumes designed by John Macfarlane. Neglected and mistreated by her stepmother and sisters, Cinderella’s life is one of drudgery and hardship until the evening of a wonderful ball at the palace when her Fairy Godmother casts a spell that will change her life forever. Transformed into a beautiful princess, Cinderella dances the night away in the arms of a handsome prince, before the clock chimes midnight and brings a sudden end to the party.

Coming soon, Danny Boyle's award-winning production of Frankenstein will return to cinemas from June this year for ‘Encore’ screenings, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature for a special two-part presentation. ***** Evening Standard, 'Thoughtful, exciting, moving' The Times 'This is a memorable production and will doubtless be spoken of for years to come.’ Daily Mail ‘Danny Boyle’s extraordinarily haunting production ’ The Independent Tickets on sale soon, look out for future emails and web posts with further announcements.
