Welcome
It seems fitting that, as many families’ thoughts turn to a new school year the Hippodrome autumn season features a number of films and events around the theme of childhood. ‘Super 8’, a good, old-fashioned blockbuster, pays homage to the trademark invocation of the magic of childhood exemplified in much of Spielberg’s work; whilst a summer of lost innocence is at the heart of the excellent ‘Tomboy’ set during one seemingly endless school holiday of swimming, games and blether, gloriously free of any adult mediation. We pick up the theme of games with a very special archive screening of ‘The Singing Street’. I saw the film recently and, like many before me, immediately fell in love with this charming record of children’s playground songs filmed in Edinburgh in the early ‘50s. Ewan McVicar – acclaimed storyteller, songwriter, international performer and author on Scotland’s traditional song – will present this lovely film and invite you to recall some of the rhymes that still echo round playgrounds today. Continuing in the archive vein, the recently retired curator of the Scottish Screen Archive, Janet McBain will join us at the Hippodrome to present her personal selection of films from the collection she knows so well. Janet, awarded a BAFTA in 2006 for Outstanding Achievement in Film, established the Scottish Screen Archive when the original collection was stored in a garden shed and worked tirelessly for the next 35 years to build the archive that now includes more than 32,000 films and covers 100 years of Scotland's history. Janet’s passion and enthusiasm for the archive endeavour is infectious and we are in for a real treat. Book soon! Many of the world’s greatest film makers have championed the work of restoring our movie heritage – most notably Martin Scorsese who established the Film Foundation for this purpose and recruited the likes of Spielberg, Coppola and Kubrick. Visionary director Terrence Malick has joined their ranks to personally oversee the restoration of his own film: ‘Days of Heaven’ and the spectacular results reveal how subtle a film restoration can be. See for yourself at our Re-wind screenings which also include the new digital restorations of
‘Kind Hearts and Coronets’ and ‘The Lavender Hill Mob’. Not restored, but certainly worth a repeat viewing is the beautiful ‘Il Postino’, programmed to mark National Poetry Day. The film won an Oscar and was nominated for a further four, including Best Actor and Screenplay for the gifted Massimo Troisi who tragically died of heart failure the day after filming was completed, having postponed his surgery in order to complete the film. At the Hippodrome we have established our own reputation for championing screenings of silent film – a moving picture style that accounts, after all, for a third of cinema’s life-span. This season we host the Closing Weekend Film of the 19th French Festival UK – a 100th anniversary screening of the second instalment in Louis Feuillade’s Fantômas silent serial, ‘Juvé contre Fantômas’ and a UK premiere of the live accompaniment performed by two cult Parisian DJs Radiomentale, ahead of its onward tour to Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and London. My advice is book early to avoid disappointment as this promises to be a truly exciting cinema experience. There is just room for a quick mention of a couple more highlights: the mini-season of animation on tour from the London Animation Film Festival – world-class filmmaking that you won’t be able to see at the multiplex; our new strand of Youth Ambassador selections, and the acclaimed documentary about a crazy endeavour to teach a chimp language: ‘Project Nim’, with an introduction from Rachel Beattie, one of the artists featured in an exhibition of new work by graduates of the Edinburgh School of Art at the Park Gallery, 3 September to 30 October. Try this as an interesting companion piece to the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ screening in the same week. Thought-provoking stuff! Super 8
The Tree of Life
Cell 211
J.J. Abrams follows up his ace ‘Star Trek’ re-boot with a terrific family sci-fi adventure modelled on the best of early Spielberg (who co-produces here) and creates a wellcrafted, entertaining blockbuster recalling a golden age of childhood and lost innocence. In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Inexplicable events overtake the town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth.
This film follows the life journey of Jack, eldest son of a 50s family, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). One of the most talked-about films at Cannes this year and the one that has most divided critics, debating whether this is a profound masterpiece or an inscrutable family melodrama. Either way, Terrence Malick’s (‘Days of Heaven’ pg 13) new feature is entirely idiosyncratic and flooded with beautiful, almost spiritual imagery.
A bracing, sweaty and intense thriller that takes the prison / hard-man genre and shakes it up with unpredictable plotting, intriguing character development and pulsing brutality. Juan is a newly appointed guard who is knocked unconscious in a freak accident on his orientation visit and wakes in a cell to find himself at the centre of a bloody riot. Mistaken for a prisoner Juan must survive by colluding with the ringleaders and grappling with the growing realisation that, to the prison authorities, he is entirely disposable.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Bobby Fischer Against the World
The Oscar-winning effects team that created the worlds of ‘Avatar’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ breaks new ground with performance capture technology thanks to stunning work by Andy Serkis as the exceptional chimp who leads his fellow lab inmates in a revolution against their human oppressors. This is an exciting prequel to the 60s and 70s ‘Planet of the Apes’ films which draws out the emotional relationship between the aptly named Caesar and the well-intentioned scientist (Franco), whose obsessive fight against Alzheimer's has engineered a dramatic evolutionary leap.
In 1958, 14-year-old Robert Fischer stunned the chess world by becoming the youngest ever Grand Master, launching a career that would make him a legend. His rise to the top of the game riveted the world and inspired an international chess phenomenon. Then, at the apex of his success and increasingly troubled by mental illness, Bobby disappeared from the public eye, becoming an angry recluse and ultimately a fugitive from the law. This spellbinding documentary uses archive footage and insightful interviews with those closest to him to relate this captivating story.

Project Nim From the team behind ‘Man on Wire’ comes this incredible but true story of the research project which aimed to teach a chimp language by having him brought up as a child in a human family. Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, the film is an unflinching account of a scientific folly. What we learn about Nim’s true nature, and indeed our own, is both comic and profoundly unsettling. Tonight’s Hippodrome screening is introduced by artist Rachel Beattie whose work explores the implications of using animals for human gain. A Better Life
Award-winning director Scherfig’s follow up feature after ‘An Education’ is a gorgeous romantic drama adapted from his own novel by David Nicholls (TV’s ‘Cold Feet’) and follows Emma (Hathaway) and Dex (Sturgess) over the course of their friendship, revisiting the two each year on the anniversary of their first night together as they navigate the trials, set-backs and love encountered over two decades. A warm, captivating film, pulsing with the leads’ vital chemistry, classy support cast and some terrific locations, including Edinburgh!
A clever and original take on the buddycop movie starring a magnificent Brendan Gleeson as vulgar, boozy and bent officer of the Galway Garda, Sgt. Gerry Boyle, who is forced to share his beat with straightlaced FBI Agent Wendell (Don Cheadle) on the trail of some unlikely international drug dealers. Written and directed with delicious caustic wit by John Michael McDonagh (brother of Martin – ‘In Bruges’) this comic thriller is a genuine delight with its generous portrayal of a lost man with his own particular brand of integrity.
In the first of a new strand we present a film programmed by 18-year-old Michael Kelly (Larbert), member of this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival ‘Youth Talent’ team and recent graduate of Forth Valley College. Michael says: “Although there are many important social issues in the film, it is really a story about how far a man will go to provide his son with the opportunities he never had. A terrific central performance and a fantastic story of father and son overcoming the odds in order to survive”.

Cowboys and Aliens
The Skin I Live In
Revamp of the 80s comedy horror classic with David Tennant replacing Roddy McDowell’s timid TV vampire killer who teams up with ex-geek Charley on a mission to expose the neighbour (Farrell) he suspects of being a real-life murderous blood-sucker. Gillespie (‘Lars and the Real Girl’) directs a strong and likeable cast, and funny dialogue with ace set-pieces make for a slick up-to-date remake with all the flair of the original.
Described by one critic as “’The Searchers’ meets ‘Independence Day’” this genre mash-up is, perhaps surprisingly, a straightup action flick which eschews pastiche and knowing nods in favour of a good old-fashioned western with UFOs standing in for Apache marauders. Favreau (comic actor and director of ‘Iron Man’) directs an A-list cast, including the enjoyable pairing of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford as, respectively, enigmatic outlaw Jake, and the iron-fisted Colonel with whom he must join forces to defeat the evil aliens.
For anyone who likes their film-going experiences to be surprising, cinematic and a little bit uncomfortable – Almodóvar’s (‘Volver’) latest delivers all his trademark lusciousness and intensity along with consummate story-telling, star performances and all-round finesse. The plot centres on a plastic surgeon (Banderas) who has spent years trying to cultivate a skin that would have saved the wife he lost after burns she suffered in a car crash, and is ultimately pushed to the edge by his consuming passion to avenge the rape of his daughter…

Jane Eyre
The Hedgehog
The latest film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel about plain, orphaned Jane Eyre who works as governess to the brooding and fearsome Mr Rochester. Leaving behind a miserable childhood Jane finds happiness and even a glimmering chance at love with her new employer, but dark secrets threaten to destroy everything Jane begins to hold dear. Both a faithful adaptation and distinctively original, this new screen version captures the passion, romance and terror of one of our most wellloved literary classics.
Although the hedgehog of the title refers to Renée – a dowdy, “prickly on the outside” concierge – it is the 11-year-old Paloma who is the real star here. Recording observations of her unhappily neurotic bourgeois family and the apartment building’s absurd goingson into her trusty camcorder, Paloma finds refuge with the eccentric Renée and cultured, wealthy Japanese widower Mr Kakuro. Hugely popular with audiences and critics alike this well-crafted intelligent film finely balances humour and sadness in a charming and ultimately life-affirming tale.

The Three Musketeers
Perfect Sense
A compelling performance from Ryan Gosling (‘The Notebook’, ‘Lars and the Real Girl’) in an a-typical action role as L.A. movie stunt driver by day and getaway driver for armed heists by night. Riveting director-to-watch: Refn (‘Bronson’, ‘Valhalla Rising’) has translated his evident love of mainstream American thrillers in to a successful meld of noir and violent thriller, with a dash of romance introduced by Carey Mulligan’s vulnerable young mother, Irene whom Driver must save from her ex-con husband and a band of vicious gangsters.
The enduring appeal of Dumas 19th century French novel has inspired over 50 screen adaptations, now joined by this latest swashbuckling romp from action blockbuster director Paul Anderson. Percy Jackson actor Logan Lerman plays the hot-headed d’Artagnan who arrives in Paris to join the King’s elite guards, but quickly finds he is duelling with some of the very men he has come to swear allegiance to – inseparable friends Porthos, Athos and Aramis. Supermodel Milla Jovovich (Mrs Paul Anderson) is the customary tough duplicitous M’lady deWinter.
An interesting companion piece to ‘Contagion’, screening this week, is another entry in the ‘pandemic pic’ genre (cf. ‘Outbreak’, ‘The Andromeda Strain’) but with the emphasis less on the horror and panic and more on the love story at the heart of a Glasgow-set tale, charting the sudden spread of a mysterious affliction that robs those infected of each of their senses in turn. Honorary Scot, Mackenzie teams up again with his ‘Young Adam’ star Ewan McGregor to direct this intriguing study of humanity’s adaptability.

Days of Heaven
An affecting drama about three very different, and extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project which seeks to record the stories of the town’s black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern white families. Both an emotional crowdpleaser and a poignant history lesson about the civil rights movement, with superb performances from all the female leads, especially Viola Davis (so memorable in ‘Doubt’ 2008), and Octavia Spencer.
The Hippodrome celebrates National Poetry day with a screening of a gorgeous tribute to the power of poetry. When legendary writer Pablo Neruda is exiled to a beautiful Italian island the vast quantities of mail he receives necessitate hiring Mario, a poor, shy fisherman, to deliver the extra letters. A friendship begins to grow between the two men as Neruda opens Mario’s eyes to the beauty of words and is soon enlisted by his new friend to help woo a local village girl – the alluring Beatrice.
In 1916 Bill heads for Texas, with his girlfriend Abby. Passing as siblings in order to find work, the lovers keep up the pretence when they realise their shy boss – rumoured to be dying, without an heir – has fallen for Abby. Famously encouraging his cinematographers to shoot during the ‘magic twilight hour’, Terrence Malick creates a visually sublime meditation on American history and myth that is lyrical and biblical in tone. The pervasive sense of beguiling mystery is further enhanced by Ennio Morricone’s magnificent score.

The Lavender Hill Mob
Kind Hearts And Coronets
Alec Guinness gives an Oscar nominated performance in one of British cinema’s most enduringly funny movies, as Henry Holland – an apparently mild-mannered bank clerk, who teams up with dodgy accomplice (Holloway) and cockney spivs (James and Bass) to execute the perfect gold bullion robbery. The second of three Ealing collaborations between director Crichton and writer T.E.B. Clarke, earning Clarke (‘Passport to Pimlico’) an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The film’s gently non-conforming criminals are likeable eccentrics – far less menacing than the murderous villains of Ealing’s later film ‘The Ladykillers’ – and the film is a delightful treat from beginning to end. Look closely in the opening scene for a glimpse of a 21 yearold Audrey Hepburn in one of her earliest film appearances.
Yet another masterpiece from the great Ealing Studios and Alec Guinness’s finest hour. This enjoyably dark and cynical comedy stars an impeccable Dennis Price as coolly callous Louis who decides to permanently ‘remove’ all the noble born d’Ascoynes standing between him and a Dukedom. Funny and brilliant, with clever wordplay and literary allusion, the film is most remembered for Guinness’s portrayal of the entire d’Ascoyne family… all eight of them, including Lady Agatha! The film features stunning and inventive cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, and a groundbreaking first-person narrative that, legend has it, inspired Scorsese to make use of the same device in ‘Goodfellas’. “The most perfectly cut gem in the Ealing crown.” Philip French, The Observer.

Buckets of humour, genuinely touching romance, and a great supporting cast, including the unforgettable horse Maximus and the gloriously evil villainess “motherknows-best” Gothel.
"After all, a person is a person, no matter how small” is the endearing message of this adaptation of Dr Seuss’ 40 page story. Horton the elephant (Jim Carey) hears a cry for help coming from a speck of dust and, even though he can't see anyone on the speck, and even though his friends disparage his efforts, Horton decides to help protect its inhabitants – the citizens of Whoville. Absurd, funny and gloriously realised, this sweet animation perfectly captures the quirky heart of Dr Seuss.
A new restoration of this enormously moving tale about a lonely, down-trodden Yorkshire boy, who finds escape from a life in which he is neglected by his family, tormented by his older brother and ridiculed by his teachers, when he finds a fledgling kestrel and decides to nurture and train it. Loach’s masterpiece, adapted from Barry Hines novel, is a beautiful allegory where ‘Kes’ comes to represent all the potential of a youngster flying against the wind.

The Singing Street: A Celebration of Scottish Playground Songs Sixty years ago 'The Singing Street' was ‘hoaching’ with rhyme and song, ball and skipping rope, and Edinburgh teacher 'Doc' Ritchie not only collected and put hundreds of small lyrics into his books, he and teacher colleagues made a film full of joy and delights, that has been called the best amateur documentary ever made. Sixty years on, while adults lament that children these days don't play games outdoors any more, the kids are out there having the same kind of fun they always did. The old games are replaced by new ones, the words change, but the bouncing around and surreal ideas are still there, though the play has had to move from unsafe streets to school playgrounds. The Hippodrome presents a unique screening of ‘The Singing Street’ with acclaimed storyteller and children's lore collector Ewan McVicar who will set the scene with memories of yesteryear and some of today's remarkable playground songs. Dir. Nigel McIsaac/Raymond Townsend/James T. Ritchie / UK / 1951 / 18m / b&w

Janet McBain first took on the Scottish Screen Archive collection when it was stored in a garden shed, and worked tirelessly for the next 35 years to collect, restore, preserve and make accessible a collection that grew to more than 32,000 films covering 100 years of Scotland’s film history. Janet retired as Senior Curator in March this year and we are delighted to welcome her to the Hippodrome to present a personal selection of favourite films from the Archive, reflecting on 35 years rescuing and uncovering hidden aspects of Scottish film production. From Scotland in the Edwardian era, to sausage making in the ‘thirties, from the craftsmanship of Clydeside’s iron founders to the eccentricities of Scotland’s sporting traditions. The programme includes ‘Unveiling of Bo’ness War Memorial’ (1924), Jenny Gilbertson’s ‘Da Makkin O’ A Keshie’ (1930), Margaret Tait’s ‘John MacFadyen’ (1972) and ‘The Grand Match’ (1979).

Hippodrome Silents
Juvé versus Fantômas Described by film historian David Thomson as “the first great movie experience”, Louis Feuillade’s Fantômas consists of five films made between 1911 and 1914 and follows the thrilling adventures of inspector Juvé and his evil nemesis, Fantômas. In partnership with the French Film Festival UK the Hippodrome is proud to present the second part of this landmark silent film serial. The relentless pace of this proto-action thriller is breathtaking, and Feuillade’s mastery of the suspense thriller – so long before Hitchcock and others – is doubly remarkable in an age of comparatively primitive technology. The film ends with a truly brilliant cliff-hanger in the manner of the best serials of the period. Tonight’s screening is accompanied by a live score performed by cult Parisian DJs RadioMentale. For ten years the sound-artist duo have been broadcasting their own cult-show in Paris, Switzerland and Japan, and their work includes sound pieces for galleries, clubs, films, installations, urban spaces and performance. Dir. Louis Feuillade / France / 1913 / b&w / 1h / silent with live music accompaniment With: René Navarre, Georges Melchoir, Renée Carl

An outstanding programme of international films from The London International Animation Festival (LIAF) selected to spark the imaginations of everyone over seven. Innovative animation techniques are used to tell tales of an unlikely love triangle, a boy trapped in everyday routines, a day in the life of a bag of lovely, lovely cash and an awardwinning adventure set in a pop-up book world, following the antics of a young boy and a stalking duck, with an original score from composer Mick Cooke of Belle and Sebastian.

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. We have named our Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics in honour of this tradition. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below).
Look out for the Jeely Jar Special** when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be re-used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. This season: Best of the Fest: Session 2 pg. 19.
AD Audio Description service for blind or partially sighted people which supplies a spoken description of action not revealed by the film’s dialogue. Pick up your headphones from the Hippodrome staff. 25
