O
From the human point of view, we are at the centre of the Universe. In one of the most important books of Taoism, the 'Tao Teh Ching', it is said that there are four great things in the universe : Tao, Heaven, Earth and Humanity. This means that human beings exist between Heaven and Earth and are governed by the Tao, by the principles of nature. We are one of the major aspects of the great organic whole that constitutes existence. At the same time, we are an image of that whole – or, perhaps better, we are that whole but on a different, more condensed, scale. The attraction between Yin and Yang energies is the fundamental law of nature. As we have defined them, Yin and Yang must co-exist and cannot exist in isolation. This is true on every scale ; in the cosmos, in the solar system, on the planet and in the relationship between men and women. All of these are manifestations of the same interchange. Every living thing has three components : matter, energy and information. 'Matter' refers to physical manifestations of all sorts. 'Energy' refers to the forces that carry out all the transforming functions of living things. 'Information' has to do with soul and spirit, understanding and memory. In a human organism, the matter level has to do with flesh and bones; the energy level has to do with metabolic processes; the information level has to do with thoughts, memories, spiritual realizations and will. The ultimate attraction and unification of living things involves the unification of all three of these components. That is, there are connections on the three levels of information, energy and matter. The physical (material) connection plays a necessary and important role in the ultimate unification . Good Feng Shui of house has nothing to do with how

expensive, how grand or how large it is. The key is having good energy : a good location, a whole some form and a smooth energy flow will produce a sense of abundance and affection. Let's get back to the basics. A house should be clean and orderly. Since form defines energy, a clean and orderly space brings forth clean and orderly energy. If a place is messy, cluttered, dirty or chaotic, it will naturally bring forth chaotic energy when a house is too partitioned and broken up and lacks well-placed windows, the flow tends to stagnate. Without proper flow, energy becomes scarce. On the other hand, if the space is not well defined or is too open, energy flows out too quickly and does not stay in the house. Without an abundance of Chi, you can't expect anything favourable. A clean and orderly house with appropriately defined and smoothly connected interior spaces will have good energy flow that can be enhanced by appropriate furniture arrangement. Thoughtful use of colours can make the space even more inviting. Without this basic quality though changing in furnishings and decoration will not help much. The key to good furnishings is balance and simplicity. Ideal dwelling place always has a balance of Yin and Yang. A house that is too Yang will have Yang problems and vice-versa. The entire creation is based on the five basic elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Sky. No matter whether a human being or substance or animals, all are composed of these elements. These five elements have close relationship with human beings and environment. Nature has assigned them their proper place according to merit. We, the human beings if follow the indication given by Nature and follow the rules of Nature regarding the placement and balance of these five elements to create favourable Chi and Yin & Yang energy as well as incorporate them in our dwellings, it is certain that our harmony with nature will gain momentum. In this way, we will be able to reduce our sufferings and ameliorate our lot. We can feel and experience the eternal truth of Nature on every step. Everyone is aware that we respond to our environment.

A small, enclosed place or an open, expansive place evoke different emotions and responses. A high place with a great view or a low valley with limited visibility also affect us differently. In a restaurant, sitting next to the entrance or kitchen door feels very different from sitting in a secure, quiet corner. This is why, in any private or public space, we intuitively choose some spots over others. Places also affect people on the group level. Groups of people will exhibit clear differences depending on whether they live in a big city, near a great body of water, on high desert or in rough mountains. City dwellers think, act and associate differently than people who live in the villages, even if they share the same culture and religion. City people tend to be more witty, shrewd and self indulgent; mountain people tend to be observant, relaxed and reserved. All these differences are due to the different level and variety of the Chi, Yin & Yang and the five elements. There is no denying the fact that mental peace and tranquility as well as prosperity and economic well being are derived if we fallow the principles of Feng Shui and abide by the rules of nature by maintaining the balance of five elements to create positive Chi and composite Yin & Yang. The subject of Feng Shui for better living, peace, harmony, prosperity, compatibility, love and romance and other aspects of life are quite large and not easy to conclude in a book. However the author has tried his best to discuss the every possible phenomenon of Feng Shui in the present books presented in two volumes. This book has been designed and written in a simple way to enable even the laymen to understand the principles and tenets of Feng Shui, sothat by taking account of those principles and applying them, they could improve their life condition and invite good fortune for themselves. The whole book has been divided into eleven chapters, each dealing with different phenomena of Feng Shui to ensure peace, happiness, prosperity for better living and balancing the five Elements, creating positive Chi and emanapating Yin & Yang. Hope the readers will benefit a lot from the book and

incorporate the easy to follow principles and guidelines in their lives to cultivate love, peace, happiness and prosperity for themselves, society, nation and the world as a whole. However, it is essential to make it clear to the readers that there are still many important areas left, which could not be discussed in this book due to limitation of space. But for your beneďŹ t and convenience, second volume of this book is also being presented. I hope you will beneďŹ t a lot from the book, you are always welcome to further your suggestion and feedback.

1 ::: Feng Shui Chapter - 1
Important Concepts
HEAVEN OR SKY CHOP SHA
EM
O
When a river meanders and the water flows slowly, it is called ‘sentimental water’. The auspicious ‘Chi’ gathers and bring benefits to those who live around the area. However when water flows quickly especially in a straight path, it becomes a ‘sha’ or ‘killing’ force. ‘Chi’ disperses and instead of bringing benefit, it can be detrimental to those living in the area.
D
The same applied to ‘Chi’ that is in the air. When it flows slowing and circulate within the house, the occupants benefit. This is one of the reasons why Feng Shui practitioners do not like houses with the front and back door in a line. When air rushes into a house and makes a quick exit, the occupants do not benefit and the air becomes a ‘sha’. This is one of the reasons why Feng Shui practitioners do not recommend buying a house at the top of a hill. Such houses are often exposed to high speed winds. When the walls of two buildings face each other in close proximity, air that flows in-between the wall faces accelerates due to the Venturi effect creating a ‘sha’ or ‘killing’ force. If your house is located close to and faces such a gap, the accelerated wind (or air) can rush into and ‘attack’ the house. There is a name given to this kind of ‘sha’. It is called the Sky Chop or Heaven Kill sha. In real life, a Sky Chop ‘sha’ can occur if your house

faces the back lane or the gap between two rows of houses or shops. It can occur in apartments or condos. For example if your balcony faces the gap between two apartment blocks.
EM
O
For the Sky Chop ‘sha’ to work, it must be near enough to your house or apartment to accelerate the wind that passes through it. If the gap created by two such building is wide or far away, you need not worry.The best test is to stand in front of the house or balcony of your apartment at different times of the day and feel the breeze blowing at it. If the breeze is gentle, you have nothing to worry. But if the breeze is strong, then you may be exposed to the ‘Sky Chop Sha’. You can slow down the wind by planting trees or by adjusting the windows. But most important of all, ensure that the internal design of the house allows the wind to circulate and slow down before exiting from the back.
THE MOUNTAIN AND WATER STAR
D
In the Flying Star system of Feng Shui, you will see references to the terms, Mountain and Water Stars. The star or rather a number that ranges of 1 to 9 is a representation of a type of energy or ‘Chi’. In this system, a dwelling is divided into nine sectors in a 3x3 matrix based on the facing direction of the dwelling as well as on the year of completion (or the year that it had a major renovation).Within each of these sectors, called palaces have usually three numbers. The one in the centre is called the Period number. The one on the top right of the palace is the Water Star while the one on the top left is the Mountain Star. What do these stars mean? They represent the quality of the Chi present in that sector. In this system, time is divided into 9 periods of 20 years each. The current period eight (runs) from 2004 to 2024. During this period certain stars or numbers such as 8 and 9 are highly auspicious.

3 ::: Feng Shui
D
EM
O
Certain numbers such as 2 and 5 are usually inauspicious except during period 2 and 5 respectively. The quality of the other stars varies depending on the period and the Flying Star schools that you practice. Like most other Feng Shui system, the methodology is to locate the main door, master bedroom and kitchen in auspicious sectors. Which is more important, the Mountain or Water Stars? The answer is both. The main door which is the primary source of incoming ‘Chi’ is best located in a sector with an auspicious Water Star such as 8 or 9 in the current period. Water is associated with wealth and movement in a sector with a good Water Star will assist your wealth endeavour. The opposite is true for the master bedroom. Here we want good health and relationship which is associated with the Mountain Star. Simplistically the best sector for a bedroom is one with an auspicious Mountain Star such as 8 or 9 in the current period. In practice, most practitioners will also consider the combination of the water star with the mountain star, or both the stars with the period star or with the Gua number of the occupants. The stars are enhanced by surrounding forms – both external and internal. For example if your main door is located in a good Water Star sector and it fronts a lake or river, the wealth energy is enhanced. Similarly if your bedroom is located in a sector with an auspicious Mountain Star, and you have a real mountain or something that respects a mountain such as a building in that sector, then your health and relationship luck is enhanced.
EIGHT HOUSE FENG SHUI One is based on personal Kua (or Gua) while the other on the house Kua (or Gua). The personal Kua version is very easy to learn.The first step is to measure the facing direction of the house. In this system there are only eight (8) facing directions. It includes the four cardinal directions of North, South, East and West and the four inter-cardinal directions

of Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest. Each direction falls within a 45 degree pie. Once you have the facing direction, map the nine palaces to the house as shown. In this example the house is facing South.
Next ďŹ nd out the Kua number of the head of the household and breadwinner. This is usually the husband but in these modern times, it may well be the wife. If the Kua number is 1, 3, 4 or 9 then he or she belongs to the East Life group. If 2, 6, 7 or 8 then it is the West Life group. For an East Life person, the favourable directions and sectors are North, South, East and Southeast. And for a West Life person, they are Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest. In this example let’s assume that the head of the household and breadwinner is the husband and he belongs to the East Life Group. Like most other Feng Shui system, the emphasis is to locate the main door and master bedroom in auspicious

sectors and correctly oriented. However unlike other systems, this Eight House Feng Shui system requires the kitchen to be located in an inauspicious sector but orientated to face an auspicious direction. Since the husband is an East Life Group person his main door and master bedroom should be in his favourable or auspicious sectors which are North, South, East or Southeast. His kitchen (or rather the stove) should be in his unfavourable sector of Northeast, Southwest, West or Northwest. There are at least a few possible placement options based on the above rules. Let look at two options below.
In the ďŹ rst option, the main door is placed in the South sector (one of his favourable sector). The main door faces South (also one of his favourable directions). The master bedroom is placed in the Southeast sector (favourable sector) with the bed facing South (favourable direction). His kitchen is located in the Northeast (his unfavourable sector) but with the stove facing South (favourable direction).

D
In the second option, the main door is in the Southeast (favourable sector) while the main door faces South (favourable direction). The bedroom is in the East (favourable sector) while the bed faces East (favourable direction). Finally the kitchen is in the Northwest (unfavourable sector) while the stove faces East (favourable direction). Both the options are favourable for an East Life person. What if the children are from the west group? Not a problem. Simply try to locate them in a bedroom located in the Northeast, Southwest, West or Northwest sectors. But what if the wife is from the West group? Put her in a different room? No. She simply has to share the same bedroom and bed with the husband.I must caution that while most schools of Feng Shui place the same emphasis on the main door, master bedroom and kitchen, the method that they use and the recommendations may be different. What I have described above is correct for this system whose foundation is the Ba Gua. Other systems have their foundation on others such as the Lo Shu and are likely to

yield different recommendations.So if a consultant suggests that you – say an East person – sleeps in a room located in the west, it does not mean he is wrong. Please remember this. Different systems are founded on different principles. At the end it’s whether they yield the right results or not.
House Gua
D
EM
O
It is a number or name of a Gua that is derived from Chinese solar year of birth and sex. Please refer to the Lo Shu and Early Heaven Pakua diagram below. There are eight numbers (from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9) and eight corresponding Gua. If your Gua number is 1, you are a Kan Gua person or if your Gua number is 7, you are a ‘Dui’ Gua person.People with Gua number 1, 3, 4 and 9 (Kan, Zhen, Xun and Li gua) falls into a group known as the East Life group while those with Gua number 2, 6, 7 and 8 (Gen, Qian, Dui and Kun gua) falls into another group called the West Life group. For those in the East Life group, their favourable sectors and directions are North, South, East and Southeast. For those in the West Life groups, their favourable sectors and directions are West, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast.

In the Eight Mansions’ system, a house also has a Gua. This is derived from the sitting direction of the house. For example a house that sits North (faces South) is known as a ‘Kan’ house. Similarly a house that sits East (faces West) is known as ‘Zhen’ house and so on. Houses with sitting direction North, South, East and Southeast is known as East Houses while those sitting West, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast are known as West Houses. Like the personal Gua system, the house Gua determines the favourable and unfavourable sectors of a house. The favourable sectors of an East House are North, South, East and Southeast and unfavourable sectors are West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast. A practitioner applying this system of Feng Shui would try to place the important areas of a house such as the main door in a favourable sector. For example for a ‘Kan’ house (sitting North), a practitioner would recommend to have the main door in the East, Southeast or South sector of the house, all which are favourable sectors for a Kan house. You may notice that the favourable sectors of an East Life person is the same as that for a East House and vice versa. This is why practitioners of this system suggests East Life persons to live in a East House and vice versa.
In a typical household, you will find both East and West

life group persons living in the same house. Does this mean for example that a West Life person should not or will not benefit from living in a East House. The answer is not. In theory an East Life person will likely benefit more from living in a East House but it does not mean that West Life person living in a East House will suffer.Remember that in an East House, there are four favourable West sectors. Practitioners would try to place a West Life group person in the West sectors (West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast) of an East House.
What is the Period of this House?
D
EM
O
A 180-years block is divided into sub-blocks of 20 years called period. For example the 20-years time span between the 4th Feb 1984 and 3rd Feb 2004 is known as Period 7 while the 20-years time span between the 4th Feb 2004 and 3rd Feb 2024 is known as Period 8. A house that is completed and occupied during Period 7 is known as a Period 7 house and acquires a “Chi” distribution or energy map distinct to that period. A house that is completed and occupied during Period 8 is known as a Period 8 house and has a different “Chi” distribution or energy map as shown below.
This is a preview. The number of pages displayed is limited.
10 ::: Feng Shui
The date of completion is usually used to determine the Period of the house. For example a house is considered a Period 8 house even if construction commenced in 2003 (period 7) but completed and first occupied in 2005 (period 8). Please note that some lineage uses the starting of construction date to determine the period of the house. Most schools however use the completion date.
EM
O
But what is the period of the house if it was completed in 2003 (Period 7) but left vacant for two years and then occupied in 2005 (Period 8). Is this a Period 7 or is this a Period 8 house?This is a hair splitting question and you are likely to get different answers from different practitioners. Take the completion date and the date that it was first occupied to determine the Period of the house. If the house was completed in 2003 and first occupied in the same year, then it a Period 7 house.
D
However if it was completed in 2003 but first occupied in 2005, then consider it a Period 8 house. Why? This has to do with the trinity concept where an event is determined when three conditions are present. When a house is completed it has already met the heaven and earth conditions. The third condition is man and this is met when the house is occupied.So, for houses completed just before the change to a new period, the occupants should move in if the energy map is auspicious and matches with the internal layout and external features. On the other hand if the energy map and layout are better suited for the next period then delay the move in to the next period.
FENG SHUI HOUSE SELECTION How do you know if a house has good Feng Shui? It is usually determined taking the location, facing (or sitting) direction of a house, the surrounding landform and the period of completion of the house.
This is a preview. The number of pages displayed is limited.
11 ::: Feng Shui
In terms of location, you should not buy a house that is located on the top of a hill or in low lying areas. The strong winds at the top of a hill is a kind of sha (killing force) which you should avoid while low lying ground may be prone to floods.
EM
O
The facing direction of the house in turn is used to determine the auspicious and inauspicious sectors within a house. As a rule, you need to have the main door, bedroom and kitchen in the auspicious sectors so that you can benefit from the auspicious ‘Chi’ that populate these sectors.An auspicious or inauspicious sector is not automatically good or bad. It must be activated by external landform. For example the highly auspicious wealth sector of a house needs to have a matching landform e.g. river, lake, field or lower land for it to work. Similarly an inauspicious sector must be activated usually with some form of sha (killing force) before it becomes dangerous.
D
Avoiding Sha (Killing Forces) Therefore if the surroudings of a house is free of any form of sha (killing forces) then it is generally considered safe.
A fast flowing river is considered a sha. In Feng Shui a good river is one that is clean and flows slowly but not

stagnant. In urban areas roads and highways are regarded as rivers. Therefore you should stay away from busy roads and highways.Mountains in the surrounding are usually good provided they are green with plenty of vegetation and wildlife. A rocky mountain or one with a collapsed side facing your house is considered sha. you should avoid them or at least stay very far away from them.A stagnant pond with rotting vegetation and emiting bad smell is an obvious sha. So are high tension pylon cables. You should avoid mobile phone towers usually located on rooftops of commercial buildings.
D
EM
O
Make sure that your house do not face the gap between two buildings. The structure creates a venturi effect flow and you get very strong wind rushing at your house. This is a sha. Tee junctions, Y junctions also generate sha. Also avoid houses that faces an incoming road or river that abrupt change course in front of your house. The edge of a nearby building can be a sha if it is orientated in such a way that it ‘pokes’ at your house. this is very common in apartment complexes. Look out the balcony or bedroom and see if the nearby building ‘cuts’ into yours.The buildings near you should also not be very much bigger. For example if yours is a two storey house and the building across the road is huge and 42 storey high, it can affect you.Look at the roads surrounding your house. Watch out for those that form a reverse bow. They can be a problem if the traffic on it is heavy.There are other from of sha but these are the common ones.
Matching a House with the Ba Zi Most of us have an unbalanced birth chart. It is either too much of this element or too little of that. This in turn affect our destiny and luck. For example one may have strong career and wealth luck but have weak relationship (say spousal and children) luck. Another may have career and wealth luck but fantantic health and relationship

luck. The lucky ones will have a balance of everything but there are far and in-between. These imbalance can affect our quality of life. Money is not everything. You have come across highly successful people who are lonely, do not have affinity with their children or worry too much (mental health).There are many ways to ‘balance’ your destiny and luck. Using the facing direction of the house or the side that receives the most energy can help to ‘correct’ this imbalance. Each direction is associated with an element. For example Water is associated with North, Fire with South etc. Facing the direction that has an element most need by you is a powerful way to ‘correct’ destiny and luck.
THE 24 MOUNTAINS
D
EM
“What is N1 or SW3?” In Eight Mansions, houses have one of eight facing or sitting directions. They are North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest. Each facing spans 45 degree. For example your house is deemed to be facing North if it has a facing direction anywhere between 337.5 and 22.5 degrees. Others like Zi Wei Feng Shui delineate houses into 12 different facing of 30 degrees each. Most others like Xuan Kong Fei Xing (Flying Star) or San He delineate into 24 facing directions of 15 degrees each. There are 4 cardinal (North, South, East and West) directions and four inter-cardinal (Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest) directions. They make up 8 directions or sectors of 45 degrees each. Each of these sectors is further divided into three sub-sectors of 15 degrees resulting in 24 facing directions of 15 degrees. In Feng Shui terminology each of these 24 sub-sectors of 15 degrees is known as a mountain, hence 24 mountains.

14 ::: Feng Shui
Let’s take the North sector which spans 45 degrees from 337.5 degrees to 22.5 degrees. Sub-divide this into three equal sub-sectors of 15 degrees span and call them N1, N2 and N3. In ancient Feng Shui text they are labeled Ren, Zi and Gui. N1, 2 and 3 are however much easier to remember. Do the same to the other sectors and label them according e.g. NE1, NE2, NE3. If your house has a facing direction of 182 degrees, it is said to face S2 or Wu. In traditional speak it is known as a house that is “Facing Wu, Sitting Zi”. For me it is much more intuitive to simply say facing S2. The choice is really up to you. In addition to being known as mountains, the 24 facing directions are also known as dragons. The ones in the middle or the ones with the suffix 2

e.g. N2, NE2, E2 etc. are known as the “Heavenly Dragon”. The ones to the left of the centre or those with suffix 1 e.g. N1, NE1, E1 etc. are known as the “Earthly Dragon” while the one to the right or those with the suffix 3 e.g. N3, NE3, E3 etc are known as the “Human Dragon”.
Death and Emptiness Lines
D
EM
O
Homes and offices should not directly face North (0 degrees) or East (90 degrees) or South (180 dgerees) or West (270 degrees). They are a class of orientations called the “Death and Emptiness Lines” which we should avoid as it can result in inauspicious consequences for the occupants. In theory, a degree or so to the right or left is sufficient to escape the dreaded lines. In practice, if it is necessary to change the facing, we would tilt a few degrees (say plus minus 3 degrees) to be on the safe side.While such orientations are not suitable for homes and offices, they are perfectly acceptable for places of worship. In the Xuan Kong system of Feng Shui, properties can have one of 24 facing directions, also known as mountains. Please refer to the 24 mountains diagram. It is inauspicious if the facing direction of a property lies exactly between two mountains, for example between N3 and NE1 or between NE1 and NE2. The “Chi” that enters such a property is confused and the occupants will suffer.
This is a preview. The number of pages displayed is limited.
16 ::: Feng Shui
The energy distribution chart for say N3 and NE3 in any period is quite different and it is not difficult to understand why the “Chi” is confused. What about those that sits inbetween the boundary between the adjacent mountains 2 & 3, for example N2 & N3 or NE2 & NE3? While their energy chart is the same, sitting on the boundary is still inauspicious, though not as serious as say between N3 and NE1.
D
EM
O
What is the consequence of sitting on the boundary? The confused Chi will cause occupants to suffer in both people related matters such as health and relationship as well as wealth related matters such as career and money. Ancient text talk about spiritual being entering the house, deserting the family, having to live on charity and having bad dreams. The modern interpretation is that the confused Chi cause occupants to becoming emotionally unstable (hence seeing ghost and bad dreams) and thinking and acting irresponsibly (such as deserting the family). So how does one rectify the problem of sitting on a “Death and Emptiness Line”? It depends very much on the type of the property. If possible we recommend the house owner carry out renovation works to change the facing of the property by a few degrees.While this is the best option, it is difficult to do and can be costly to implement. The other option is to change the facing of the “mouth of Chi” into the house. This is usually (those not always the case) the main door. Tilting the door and door frame is a more cost effective solution and is a more practical solution. Up Mountain Down Water A house that has the prosperous water star at the facing and the properous mountain star at the sitting is known as “Prosperous Mountain Prosperous Water”. It is good for people matters (health and relationships) and wealth matters (money and career).Properties with this configuration in the current period 8 include those with facing directions SW1,

The number 8 in the middle indicate a period 8 chart. During this period the most properous star or “useful god” is star 8. Where are the mountain and water star 8? They are at the sitting and facing place, thus fulfilling the conditions for “Prosperous Mountain and Prosperous Water”. Does that mean that the occupants will have great people and wealth luck? Not necessarily. The prosperous water star at the facing is energized if there is real physical water e.g. in the form of a land or pond, or abstract water in the form of an open space or lower land e.g. field or playground. Wealth matters are enhanced. Similarly the prosperous mountain star at the sitting is energized if there is a real mountain - should be green and not rocky or has a collapsed face - or if supported by higher land or a large building. People matters are enhanced.
What if the landform is reversed i.e. mountain at the facing and water at the sitting? Then it is considered to be unlucky. The occupant’s people and wealth luck are expected to suffer.

Which bring us to “Up Mountain Down Water” or “Reversed Mountain Reversed Water” charts. This is the type of chart where the prosperous water star 8 is at the sitting palace and the prosperous mountain star is at the facing palace. The general prognosis, it is bad for people matters and bad for wealth matters.

Properties with this type of configuration in the current period 8 include those with facing directions NW1, SE1, SW2, SW3, NE2 and NE3. Please refer to the energy chart of a period house facing NE3. Does that mean that the occupants will have poor people and wealth luck? Not necessarily. Again land form matters. If there is a good mountain at the facing and good water at the sitting, the negative quality of the chart is redeemed.
D
However it would be disastrous if there is water at the facing and mountain at the sitting. The mountain star which is responsible for people matters, now at the facing, falls into water and people matters suffer. It is much like falling and drowning in water and hence the term “Down Water”. The prosperous water star, which is now at the sitting, is blocked by a mountain and is like trying to climb a mountain - an impossible task (water always flow down a mountain) - hence wealth matters suffer.
North and South Facing Houses The most popular type of house here is the link house (similar to a townhouse). These houses share a common wall with their neighbors on the right and left. The primary source of light into the house is from the facing side. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Hence East and West facing houses receive more natural sunlight into the house and are usually warmer than North or South facing houses. Most home owners prefer either a North or

There is this popular belief that south facing houses are good for wealth matters (money and career) while North facing houses are not. While this is not necessarily true, it has not stop buyers from snapping up South facing properties ahead of their North facing brothers.

Let’s explore if South facing houses are good for wealth matters.
The chart on the left shows the Flying Star energy chart for a South facing house (more specifically a S2 and S3 house) for the current period. Both the current prosperous mountain and water star 8 are at the facing palace. This type of chart is also known as the “Prosper Wealth but not Prosper Descendents” or “Double Facing” chart. They are good for wealth matters but not necessarily for people matter. Wealth matters usually mean career and money while people matter would roughly translate to relationship and health. While it appears that South facing houses are good for wealth matters, this is not true for all times. With each period change the position of the current prosperous star

The chart shows the Flying Star energy chart for a North facing house (more specifically a N2 and N3 house) for the current period. Both the current prosperous mountain and water star 8 are at the sitting palace. This type of chart is also known as the “Prosper Descendents buy not Prosper Wealth” or “Double Sitting” chart. They are good for people matters but not necessarily for wealth matter. Also note that this is correct for N2 and N3 houses. N1 facing house have a different chart. In fact a N1 facing house has the same chart as a S2 and S3 house while S1 facing house has the same chart as a N2 and N3 house. Or to put it another way, N1, S2 and S3 houses are “Double Facing” or good for wealth matters while S1, N2 and N3 facing houses are “Double Sitting” and good for people matter.
Is a good chart all that is required to have good Feng Shui? The answer is a resounding no. The surrounding landform matters. For N1, S2 and S3 houses, the facing of

the house should have matching ‘water’. This means having ‘real water’ like river or lake or ‘abstract water’ like a field or playground and preferably lower than the house. Water at the facing, real or otherwise, amplifies the wealth,quality of the wealth star at the facing. Since the mountain star 8 is also in front, people matter may suffer as the mountain falls into water. However practitioners believe that having a mountain at the facing in the distance will correct this and help to improve people matter. By the same token, for S1, N2 and N3 facing houses, a mountain at the sitting amplifies the people quality (relationship and health) of the house.

The Significance of “Sha Chi” or “Killing Force” “Sha Chi” means “Killing Forces” in Feng Shui and it refers to inauspicious energies generated by naturally occurring landforms as well as man-made structures. A barren rocky mountain is an example of a naturally occurring “sha” while high tension pylon cables and microwave towers are examples of man-made structures that generate “Sha Chi”. “Sha Chi” is found indoors too. For example, a huge overhead beam over a bed can generate “killing forces” and is known as a “sha” albeit an indoor one. In Feng Shui, a lot of effort is put into avoiding “sha” as well as how to block or neutralize them when they occur. But why so much fuss over them? In most systems of Feng Shui, a house is divided into auspicious and inauspicious sectors usually based on its facing or sitting direction of the house. Next a lot of effort is spent trying to position the main door, stove and beds in these auspicious sectors. They rationale is that if we activate them (e.g. main door and stove) or spend lots of time (e.g. sleeping in bed) in these auspicious sectors, our luck will improve due to the positive influences of these auspicious energies.

Sleeping in a room in a sector with inauspicious energy does not necessarily mean that you will be bestowed with misfortune. Usually it must be ‘activated’ and one of the most common activator is “sha” – both the external and internal type. For example, if you sleep in a bedroom influenced by inauspicious energy and there is an external “sha” in the form of a rocky outcrop just outside your window. Or there is a huge overhead beam over your bed. By the same token, an auspicious sector can also be negatively influenced by the presence of “sha”. This is the reason why Feng Shui consultant put so much effort into avoiding “sha”. Here are some examples of external “sha” that you should avoid. The T junction is one of the most common types of “sha” found in an urban environment. Make sure that your main door does not directly face the T junction.

D
EM
O
Another common “sha” is the lamp, telephone or electrical post. It should not be directly in the path of the main door. If it is, you should move the post. A busy highway or a fast flowing river is also a type of “sha”. You should avoid living in a house that is located very close or next to them. I have mentioned rocky mountain above. A green mountain with lush vegetation is good but if it has an exposed earth face it becomes a “sha”. You can usually find these in a rock quarry or sometimes left opened by an irresponsible contractor. Your house should also not face a “channel” e.g. the back lane of houses or a gap between two buildings. These “channels” can cause the wind to accelerate and rush towards your house which is another form of “sha”. If you live in an apartment complex, the nearby apartment blocks can also form a “channel” and cause the wind to accelerate towards your unit. Another form of “sha” is created by the edges of nearby buildings. Make sure that these edges do not point at your house especially at the main door and bedrooms. Ideally a house should be located on the inside of a bend. When it is located on the outside of a bend and the traffic on the road is heavy, you may be exposed to what is known as the “reverse bow sha”. This is something that you should avoid. Does the land in front of your house slopes downwards? If so, you should look out for drains that take water away from the facing of your house. This is another form of “sha”. You should stop drains’ water rushing out and away from your house. These are some of the common naturally occurring and man-made features than generate “sha” and you should avoid living in a house that is closed to them. In Xuan Kong Fei Xing (Flying Star) Feng Shui, the energy distribution of a house or its “Chi” map is derived from the facing (the direction that receives the most yang energy) and period of the house.

24 ::: Feng Shui
The “Chi” map identifies the auspicious and inauspicious sectors of a house. We can then make informed decision on the optimal location of the main door, bedroom, kitchen and other living or working spaces based on the map.
O
The resulting “Chi” map also characterizes the quality of the house. For example a South 2/3 facing house (172.5 to 202.5 degrees) of the current period (Period 8) is called Double Facing. In Chinese it is called “Prosper Wealth but not Prosper Descendents”. Such a South facing house will improve the wealth luck of the occupants but not necessarily the descendent’s luck. Descendent’s luck translates to good health and relationships.
EM
On the other hand a North 2/3 facing house (352.5 to 22.5 degrees) in the current period is called Double Sitting. In Chinese it is called “Prosper Descendent but not Prosper Wealth”. It is the opposite of a South facing house and it enhances the occupant’s descendent luck, meaning health and relationships, but not necessarily wealth luck.
D
The facing is however only part of the story. The sitting and facing of these houses must be free from naturally occurring landforms and man-made structures that generate “Sha Chi” or killing force. If “Sha Chi” is present and close enough, the auspiciousness of these houses are destroyed. In addition to the absence of “Sha Chi”, the house should be surrounded by complementary landforms. For example a “Prosper Wealth”, S2/3 facing house should have “water” at the facing direction of the house. Water can be real like a clean lake or slow flowing river or not like an open field or playground at the same level of the house or lower. The correct land form amplifies the auspiciousness of the house which in the case is wealth luck. For a N2/3 “Prosper Descendent” house, there should be mountain at the back or sitting side of the house. Mountain

can be real, with lush vegetation or pseudo, like an elevated land or plenty of tall trees. Again when mountain is present at the sitting the descendent luck is enhanced. What if the South facing house immediately faces a mountain? Or a North facing house has a lake nearby at the sitting side? When this happens or when matched with the opposite type of landform, the auspiciousness of the house is destroyed. The wealth luck of a South facing house is deprecated while the descendent luck of a North facing house is deprecated as well.

EM
O
In addition to S2/3 period 8 houses, W2/3, N1 and E1 houses are also called “Double Facing” and enhance the wealth of the occupants. And in addition to N2/3 houses, those that face E2/3, S1 and W1 are “Double Sitting” enhances the descendents (meaning health and relationships) of the occupants. Period 8 houses that face SW1, NW2/3, NE1, and SE2/3 are known as “Prosperous Water Prosper Mountain” or in layman terms good for wealth and good for descendents. However they are only effective if they have good water at the facing and good mountain at the sitting. When these conditions are met, occupants can expect good wealth and descendent luck. However if such houses have a “mountain” in front and near enough and “water” at the back (sitting) and near enough, then all is lost. The house wealth and descendent luck is greatly depreciated. Period 8 houses that face NW1, SE1, SW2/3 and NE2/3 are called “Going up the Mountain and Falling into Water”. Many consider them unfavourable as it also translates into “No Wealth and No Descendent luck”. This is not necessarily true. It depends on the landform at the facing and sitting. If there is water in front and mountain at the back, then it is unfavourable. However if the reverse is true, meaning mountain in front and water at the back, then it is quite acceptable.

RENOVATION RULES

From a Feng Shui perspective you should not Renovate an area that is afflicted with inauspicious current year, Chi can activate the afflicted area and bring about negative consequence. If the house is vacant or untenanted, you can start renovating any sector of the house. All you need to do is select an auspicious date and time to start work. If the house is currently tenanted and you do not have plans to move out then you should observe the rules of Feng Shui regarding renovations. You should not carry out any renovations on your house if it sits on the Sui Poh direction or the Five Yellow direction of the year.
In addition to the above you should take note of the direction of Three Killings. In 2013 Three Killings is at the East. This means that you should ideally not carry major

For an irregular shape house, locating the centre is more challenging. Once you have located the ‘centre’ of the house, place a compass there and rotate it until the ‘North’ marker on the compass face is aligned with the North pointing needle. You can then read the rest of the cardinal and intercardinal directions off the compass face.
Although North for example is 0 degrees, the North sector is actually a 45 degrees pie ranging from 337.5 degrees to 22.5 degrees. Please refer to the drawing on the left to see this sector and the rest of the sectors.Therefore you can place the cure anywhere within the pie although in practice it is better to place it closer to the line.

PREGNANCY AND RENOVATIONS
D

O
There is an unwritten rule in the Chinese community about carrying out renovations works. You simply do not do it if a member of the occupant is pregnant. It is so ingrained in we simply accept it without question. There are also enough horror stories about the consequences of breaking this rule to keep the taboo alive. There are a number of good reasons. A house is not a safe place to be during renovation works. The chances of an accident happening is high. For a pregnant person, the centre of gravity is shifted and it is easier to fall. In addition, the ligaments are soft and joints are less stable, increasing the risk of injury.
The pregnant person make inadvertently get involving in moving items about. Some research indicates that there is a higher risk of miscarriage in women who do strenuous labour. It is well known that smoking by pregnant mother may result in foetal injury, premature birth or low birth weight. I am not sure if the dusty unhealthy environment created during renovation works will have the same effect but it is certainly something worth avoiding. There is increasing evidence that babies in the womb are aware of external noise. Particularly loud noises have been shown to stimulate the foetus directly, causing changes in heart

rate. In addition to direct noise, the foetus is also not fully protected from its mother’s response to stress, caused by noise and the physical changes she experiences may be transmitted to the foetus resulting in a threat to proper foetal development. It may interest you to know that a Japanese study of over 1,000 births produced evidence of a high proportion of low-weight babies in noisy areas. The solution is to ask the pregnant occupant to move to another location (e.f. friend’s or sibling’s house) for the duration of the renovation.

This is why you are advised not to sleep with your feet facing the bedroom door and why it’s called the coffin position.

If it is economically impractical to replace the bed and mattress, then you can perform a cleansing ceremony described below. Clean the Bedroom The next step is to thoroughly clean the bedroom. Open all windows - This allows the stagnant chi to escape the room and be replaced with fresh chi.
