EVERY DAY IS RACE DAY Written by Katrina Matza, Secretary
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP,
the sounds of 30 plus alarms ringing at the 6am mark has only one meaning, its RACE DAY! The Appalachian Snowboard Team opened the race season by shredding the gnar of the mountain in Massanutten, Virginia. The team welcomed it’s 20 new gnarcat members of 2014 with quite a victory in both Slope-Style and Giant Slalom events. Out of 8 teams, the mens giant slalom team placed 4th, and the women’s team placed 3rd. The Slope-style competition was dominated in both the mens and womens divisions, by Appalachian State, placing within the top 10. In short the team opened the season with some steezy new talent.

Everyday is race day for the Appalachian Snowboard Team. Whether it is traveling every weekend for the race season, or just hitting the local slopes with fellow team members, the love for the snow and shredding never stops. The team prides itself on the aspect of being like a big family. Welcoming the new members into the family of gnarcats is a part of the season the team looks forward every year. Observing the new talent, creating memories, and teaching
the lingo of the team, whatever it is, the team bonding never ends on and off the slopes. Checking the weather forecast is an innate habit during the season. Even though it has been a mild winter thus far, the team is keeping its fingers crossed that we keep getting snow, whether it is feet or just inches, any snow is better than no snow. The team is keeping warm with their new swagged out jackets from

“Observing the new talent, creating memories, and teaching the lingo of the team, whatever it is, the team bonding never ends on and off the slopes.” Analog’s 2014 collection. This year our swagg captain Jackson Grotophorst, gave the team a whole new look. The jackets don’t just unify the team, they bring swag to the mountain. The electrifying yellow, the fuzzy hoods, the old yosef logo, and the sponsorship logo from Local, is letting the team rep Appalachian State with pride this year. The team hosted the second race of the season at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort this past Monday on MLK. Hosting a race is always fun, because the team gets to bond with the other teams competing by helping gate keep, timing the race and keeping the competition moving
smoothly. Inter-team bonding is a big part of any snowboarder’s true spirit. There is nothing a snowboarder likes more than bonding with people who share the same love for shredding the gnar of the mountains and snow. The competition was a success with great snow conditions as well as the results of the competition with the Men’s Giant Slalom team placing 1st and the Women’s team placing 2nd. The Appalachian Snowboard team is exciting to start the season off with these great snowy victories and is excited about traveling to Bryce, VA for the weekend of January 24th, as well as Wisp, MD the following weekend for the first boarder-cross race of the season!

EXCITING SEMESTER AHEAD Photo provided by Equestrian Team
Article by Morgan Erlenbach, Team President
The Equestrian team continues to grow in size with several new members this semester! We are always excited for new members; they continue to add diversity and new excitement to

the team. The team is working hard this semester for the upcoming Dressage show we are hosting this February at Foothills Equestrian Center in Hickory, NC. Several schools will be attending this dressage or “IDA show that we are hosting including Virginia Intermont College, Virginia Tech,

Salem College, and Wake Forest University. Hosting shows are a great way for the team to work together and also a great way to fundraise to support entry fees for other riders at competitions. This upcoming March, the Hunt Seat team will be competing

“Hosting shows are a great way for the team to work together” at Virginia Tech for regionals. Regionals is a show that only riders who have gained enough points throughout their years competing attend. These riders have earned enough points by attending shows and “pointing
out” of their division to advance to the next level! We have several riders attending regionals this year including Hunt Seat Captain, Alison Davis and Vice President, Chloe Paddison. The rest of the Hunt Seat Team members and also Dressage and Western riders are working hard to attend regionals as well!
The Equestrian Team has also had some leadership changes for this spring semester due to some of our members graduating. Kristen Gore is the new team Social Chair, planning fun teambonding events and April Kaiser will be the new Treasurer keeping charge of our bank account and membership fees!

OFF TO THE RACES

- SKIING -
I try and imagine sometimes exactly what professional ski racers do in preparation for their races. All the preparation that goes into something as short as 28 seconds for them seems a little over zealous once you look into it. But once you experience it first hand, the need for speed is what its all about. For the past two weekends the ski team has had two outstanding
8
competitions. The weekend before school started January 10-12th at Massanuten in Virginia and the next January 19th and 20th at Sugar Mountain. Both races were an exhilarating experience and our racers brought the team to 2nd for the men, and 3rd for the women currently in our conference.
And as we travel to our next race on the 24th to Bryce Resort we aim to push ourselves and our school to the top again as we practice daily, and put in many hours of preparation for our next 28 second shot at glory. Ski Ya Later!

- FENCING Article by Alex Fogleman
The Appalachian State University Fencing Club is off to a promising start this year.
practice of the year on the twenty-third of January in the back of the Quinn Recreation Center, once again at 7:00 pm.
With the advertising done during the spring expo the club has acquired a good page of signatures from prospective new recruits for the upcoming year, putting us off to yet another great start. While our first practice wound up being canceled due to the recent snowstorm we still have high hopes for the rescheduled first
In other news the club has many other things to look forward to during this semester, one of which being the instatement of the club’s new treasurer, Amanda Martinez as well as the upcoming national qualifying tournament in North Carolina that the club will without a doubt be preparing for. While schedules are currently still being strung up, there are also plans to get involved with
“This semester has pretty exciting prospects.” the fencing club of Wake Forest University in order to do some group-meets with some of their own fencers over the course of the year. Overall, this semester has pretty exciting prospects.

- WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Article by Elena Kacan
The Women’s Basketball team will be back in full swing this week ready to practice twice a week again. In addition to practice, players are getting together and working out at the gym on their offdays. They are preparing for the University of Maryland’s regional tournament on February 7-8th. This is the furthest they’ve traveled in the 5 years they have been competing and are looking forward to the long road trip. Although they lost some
players after the fall semester, the roster is still looking strong. These spring tournaments will determine their place in the national tournament come April. They are hoping to compete at least 4 times throughout the semester and are still coming up with ways to fundraise and initiate team bonding.

Team Update
- MEN’S ULTIMATE Article by Austin Olive, Secretary
With the college season approaching, there is only one thing that the Men’s Ultimate team has in mind, and that is winning. The spring semester is upon us and it’s at this time that we look to come out with intensity and a swagger that defines Appalachian State Ultimate. Over the winter many of our players have been working hard to stay in shape in preparation for the road ahead of us. The spring semester also brings hardships to
14
the team. With the snow falling outside and the bone chilling temperatures, it’s tough to get anytime on the field or get hands on the disc. This is why when we do we get space inside to practice and workout; we must take full advantage of it.
Cut to the break side, or the force side? The game is full of split second decisions that can either make or break your team. This year, we intend to limit these mistakes as much as possible so we can maintain the mental edge over our opponents.
Ultimate is a mix between mental and physical strength. So during this semester we need to bone not only our bodies, but our minds. Yes, being athletic certainly helps you play better, but being smart is what excels your game. Should I buck the disc, or just dump behind me?
“Ultimate is a mix between mental and physical strength.”

The tournaments we are attending this semester are highly competitive and we need to be in the best shape to come out and give our all for App State. Our first one is coming up the weekend of february 8th, in Charlotte, fittingly named the Queen City Ttme Up. Teams from all around the country will be in attendance and it will certainly be a great first tournament to gauge where we are at this season. We are also hoping to host at least one competitive and one B team tournament in Boone this semester.
