The Boys are Back Together Jack Nixon, Secretary Appalachian State Men’s Club Lacrosse started practice last monday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The team is looking forward to competing in a tough spring schedule with 3 games against top 25 teams in the country. App State received 8 votes for the top 25 which gives them the 30th ranked spot in the preseason poll. The men’s team starts the season with away games, with a trip to Charleston to play the College of Charleston and the Citadel. We then get a 3 week break before we head down to Charlotte to play Davidson and conference foe, Wake Forest. March 29th marks the first home game of the spring as we take on Elon at State Farm Fields, before we head down to Statesboro to take on Sunbelt rival Georgia Southern. We finish up the season with a game against UNCC and two home games against Kennesaw State and East Tennessee University. This spring we returned over 25 members and have around 10 new guys coming out to play. This will be a special year stated senior attack Connor New, “ We have a bunch of guys who are willing to buy into the program and who I feel have a lot to bring to the team”. The attack is led by returners Senior Connor New and Junior Sam Honchalk who contributed to over 50% of the team’s points last spring. We also have a strong midfield led by Junior Jonathan Winbush who is an asset on both sides of the field. The defense will be fairly young but will have a lot of energy. Junior Luke Haverstrom is one of the guys who

knows the team well. “We have a handful of younger guys that have stepped up and started to be leaders. They come to practice everyday with energy and are competing for playing time every practice.” The team’s goal this spring is to beat division rival Wake Forest and Hopefully secure a spot in the SELC playoffs in Atlanta at the end of april. Appalachian State made an appearance in the playoffs in both 2017 and 2018 but failed to make it in 2019. The team led by alumni Jack Rich is looking to lead the team back to the playoffs. Make sure to follow us on instagram, facebook and twitter @appstatelacrosse to keep up with the team and see how the team does this spring. Go Neers’ -Jack Nixon Secretary

Game Time Charlotte Murphy, Club Sports Representative
The time has finally come! This weekend our team is embarking on their first game for the spring season. The team has been practicing at every available opportunity and will continue to do so until game time. The team was scheduled to play their first game at the end of January, but it was decided to forfeit that game and instead have the first game in the first weekend of February. Everyone has been so excited to get out and stretch their legs both on the field and in the gym. With that in mind, the beginning of our season did not start off so smoothly. It has been a hard journey due to several different things; one of which is the weather. This spring Boone, NC has had an influx of rain and very little sunshine. This means that our team has not been able to practice on the State Farm fields regularly. This also means that for our upcoming game on Saturday
we are struggling to find a field. So far, the consensus is that our game against UNCC will be held at UNCC rather than in Boone, but this is still undecided. Another difficulty that our team has encountered is that we are running low on numbers. To counter this, we have been advertising and getting the word out about the team. To stay informed on these topics it is important to visit our Instagram account! Remember our sale for jerseys is still ongoing, but will probably end by next week. If you would like to contact our team for sponsorships, fundraisers, or more information follow our Instagram @aho_wrfc or check out our website at https://clubsports.appstate.edu/ on the club sports webpage!

Women’s Here We Go Again Samantha Pawlovich, Club Council Rep With this new year comes a new season and a new team. New members are just starting out with the team and old members are returning from break. Getting used to new faces, different ways of playing the game, and trying to figure out what exactly is going to lead this team to becoming great. As the first couple of practices started up, we began with the normal introductions: name, year, position. This helps each person feel as if they are not left out on the field. Because in lacrosse communication is necessary for success, and one way to do that is by knowing your teammates names. Trying to throw the ball across the field is not going to work if the girl receiving it does not know it is being passed to her.
07
So, we start off with names. Implementing them into each drill that follows the introductions. The flow of these first couple of practices is important. It demonstrates what the rest of the season is going to look like and can determine whether or not the team will work well and flow together. That’s why I like to always start each season and practice with high energy and encouragement. Letting each player know when they had a good shot, a great pass, or even a nice try. It keeps the morale high and the energy as well because it makes people want to do better.
Lacrosse To become better and know that someone on your team has your back and notices that good things are happening on the field. It also starts the communication going and allows the players to understand the flow that is needed for good shots on goal along with other well played moments on the field. I am excited to see how this new season and new year are going to play out. I am excited to get to know each new face and see the growth that comes with playing together. Coming up with new ways to teach plays and meet each player where they are. Trying to encourage each one to move beyond what they think the boundaries are for them.

Preserving History Kelly McFeeley, Club Sports Representative
The Broyhill Equestrian Preserve has been a supporter of the App State Equestrian team for a long time. They have played a huge part in helping the team to grow and continue to thrive as a club sport, while also playing a huge part in the history of the town of Blowing Rock.
While much of the state would be plagued by the Great Depression, Blowing Rock remained untouched, with tourism in the thriving. This allowed the Charity Horse Show to continuously stay in operation every single year since 1923.
Many have heard of and know the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show. This is a show that has formally been put on every year since 1923 when it first took on the name “Blowing Rock Horse Show.” The history of the show didn’t start there though. The first records of the show date back to a newspaper article in the Lenoir News Topic from September 8th, 1897. The article details an annual fun show that the owner of Green Park Inn put on to entertain guests. Then in the mid 1920s Thomas H. Broyhill purchased the Mayview area of Blowing Rock and took over the Blowing Rock Horse Show as an attraction for the guests of Mayview Manor Hotel In 1934, Broyhill sold the grounds to the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Association and the area would then become what is now known today as the Broyhill Equestrian Preserve.

Equestrian Their accomplishment eventually allowed the horse show to become part of the nationally recognized Heritage Competition Foundation and the show is now a major event in the town of Boone. The preserve officially begins their season in May, but for the last several years has kicked off the new year with the App State Equestrian Team’s Spring Open Show. During the spring, summer, and fall months, the preserve hosts several big shows including the Saddlebred Competition and the Hunter/ Jumper Shows. Both shows bring in many big names in the horse world, such as the Towel and Wheeler families. The season officially ends in November, but not before many people have had the chance to camp and enjoy the beauty of the preserve with their families and horses. The Equestrian team has the entire preserve board to thank for their continued support of the team, but a main supporter of the team is Maurice Ewing. He had been a liaison between the team and preserve board for the last 6-7 years. This year will be his 70th Charity Horse show and his 45th year serving on the preserve’s board. The Appalachian Equestrian Team would not be able to make as big of an impact if it wasn’t for the generosity of the Broyhill Equestrian Preserve. We wish the Broyhill Preserve luck as they go to embark on their 97th Annual Blowing Rock Charity Horse show this summer. Just as it has in the past, we can’t wait to see how big of a success it will be going forward. Photocreds: Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show

Throughout the semester, our players will be traveling to other schools like Western Carolina, NC State and UNC-Wilmington. On April 4th, App State will host our own tournament at the SRC. EXECUTIVE CORNER Nathan Kanning February 5, 2020
Hello Everyone! My name is Nathan Kanning and I am one of the Club Sports Executive Officers. February 5th marked the second council of our spring semester, and we want to thank all that attended. The main objective of the meeting was to update teams on what major events we have coming up throughout the semester. Events such as Symposium and Banquet, to prepare for next year and celebrate this year respectively. Teams have been informed to start the search for new officers for next academic year, as the new team officers will be attending Symposium. Current officers are advised to take a potential candidate for their position under their wing, to try and get a head start on the process of learning the club sports program. Banquet will be used to celebrate all the teams accomplishments, as well as discuss what officers have learned from holding their position. Committees met for the first time this semester and have started good projects. Safety discussed adding red flag to the symposium meeting. The publicity committee discussed having our programmer take photos and make videos for teams. This week in club sports is returning next week, and fundraising is doing a Come Back Shack fundraiser on Feb. 20.
The executive board is very excited to grow the program this semester!
