Rider Spotlight Equestrian Kelly McFeeley, Club Sports Representative
In order for any club sports team to continue year after year and maintain a strong legacy, the current members must be willing to welcome in fresh faces and encourage their love of the sport. In the case of the equestrian team, we are lucky to have such talented new riders each year. One of these riders is Zoe Volmer, a first year hunt seat competitor. Zoe is a freshman biology major from Chapel Hill, NC. Originally from Texas, Zoe began riding at her grandmother’s ranch at the young age of four years old. For the first several months of riding, Zoe’s grandmother taught her Western, as this was the discipline she herself grew up riding. After moving to North Carolina, Zoe continued her lessons at a hunt seat barn riding English. From age five until eighteen, Zoe has continued her riding career as a hunt seat competitor and now carried it with her into college. One of her biggest inspirations for riding has been her first riding instructor, Ginny Rollins as she was able to push and encourage Zoe to continue doing her best and to constantly improve her riding. Choosing to attend Appalchian was easy for Zoe. When she had first visited the school, Zoe said it felt extremely welcoming and she enjoyed the outdoor feel of the school. Having an equestrian team was also an added bonus as that was something she had been looking for at schools. After college, Zoe wants to go into PA school to become a physician’s assistant. One of the best parts of being a member of the equestrian team for Zoe, is that she gets to ride, but at the same time make new friends and memories. This is something that everyone on the equestrian team can relate to. Being a freshman in college can be intimidating and stressful, but having a place and a group of people who can help make you feel welcome and comfortable is important. The equestrian team is for many people and we are excited to continue and cherish that legacy for future years to come.

The Women’s Lacrosse team this weekend went to a UNC Chapel Hill tournament. At the tournament there was major growth between the returning and new players. The flow of the team changes with new additions and we sought to figure out the flow this new set of teammates as we went into the weekend. We started off the weekend against Eastern Carolina University. As the game began, we were not clicking. Passes to each other were sloppy and communication was not where it needed to be, but as the game continued it started to shift. During half-time we talked to the team about upping the communication and making sure that there were clean passes on the transitions, and as were set off into the second half I saw these changes implemented into our team’s play. We began to hold possession for longer and the transitions up the field looked beautiful as the players passes seamlessly from one player to the next as we shifted down the field. The girls started to attack after ground 07
balls and defense put pressure on each opponent. We had begun to fight and enjoy the game that we were playing. Defense worked hard the entire game as the ball moved in the direction of the goal. Never slacking and ever vigilant to the plays around them. The anchor of the defense this weekend were the goalies, Charis Hatcher and Lauren Smith. The saving of numerous shots and protecting the team from a deafening blowout. Simply said, they killed it! They were quick to each shot and stepped out of the cage to clear the ball out of high-pressure situations. They stepped up for the team. This goes to show that each member on the field is vital to the success of the team, and though the score board did not show it, I am proud of the aggression and will to play hard that my fellow teammates demonstrated in each time we stepped on the field. We are continuing the grow as a team and play well as we play against Western Carolina University on March 29.

The nomads have had a busy February. With the spring season fully in swing the team has been putting the nose to the grindstone trying to become the best to ever do it. Besides the normal practices and team hang outs this month the team played two tournaments. The First tournament Queen City Tune Up in Charlotte respectively was a bit of a surprise as we where not given an invite to go until a day before the tournament. The team scrounged up 12 players on short notice and headed down for the weekend. With limited numbers and with snow and mud making playing conditions abysmal the Nomads showed strong fortitude and true grit as the twelve boys kept it close with some of the top teams in the nations. One of the best things to come out of Charlotte was a win over university of Maryland a team who has beaten us in almost every match up we have played them in. the team left with their heads held high and ready for what was to come

The next weekend 2/22 saw the team head down to our annual tournament in Charleston. This tournament is a great time for some of the more unexperienced players to really get a hold of fundamentals and allows them with a lot more playing time than they are accustom to. Players like Jeffery “Bama” Wilson and Ryan “Big Boots” May saw vast improvement at this tournament and the team is excited to see where they will go next. The team ended in a disappointing second as we held a lead against Clemson for most of the game. The team will remember this heartbreaking loss for the next time we face up against them. March now brings a break from tournaments as our scrimmage with UNC Ashville isn’t until the end of March the team will use this time to improve on the weaknesses that where exposed during our February tournaments as well as will improve on personal conditioning and strength so we can be the team we know we are.

Hello everyone! March 4th marked the fourth council of our spring semester, and we want to thank everyone that attended. We only have three more councils left in the semester! This council we discussed a lot of important dates that are coming up as the semester comes to a close. Maya introduced her survey to the Council. She will be sending this assessment survey to the other officers of each club team soon. Griffin reminded us about nominations of Executive Officers. He will be sending out the nomination survey out again soon, so please be sure to submit your candidates for the position ASAP. Also, be on the lookout for a survey on how team officer elections went. We want to know feedback so we can make the Club Sports program better! Club Sports Banquet awards were mentioned at council tonight. These awards include the Rich and Tassee Little Award, Club Sports Turnaround Team of the Year, and Club Sports Officer of the Year. The Google nomination form will be sent out after break on March 25th. Also if your team wants to enter the Club Sports Photo Competition, information is on AppSync.
