Alpine Ski The Appalachian State Ski Team has high hopes for this upcoming season! In the

first interest meeting there were over 30 new faces and a lot of enthusiasm about skiing! In years past, the team has had around 20 racers, but this year there is potential to double the team! For the fall semester, we will have dryland practices twice a week to grow together as a team and get in shape for the season. Dryland includes hikes, workouts, dodgeball, and a lot of fun. The ASU Ski Team has a lot to look forwards to in the spring semester. To kick off the season, we are hosting an Appalachian State Alumni race at Sugar Mountain. In addition, we have 5 regular season races starting at our home mountain Sugar and traveling to Beech, Bryce, and Snowshoe. We race against Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Duke, and NC State. For the past several years, we’ve made it to regionals and we have plans to represent the Dirty South once again!

As this next semester starts up, along with it come opportunities for the Racquetball Club. Beginning with Club Expo, we were able to recruit a wide variety of new students ranging from beginners to advanced players. Compared to last year’s team which had many graduating seniors, there is a majority of newcomers in the freshman and sophomore classes. Another big difference from last year is that the previous semester had a majority of guys while this semester sees a more balanced ratio of girls to guys. Having observed the new talent during our first practice last Tuesday, I have a positive outlook for this year and believe we will rise above last year’s accomplishments. One of our main goals for this year is gaining as many budget points as we can in order to get the opportunity to travel to other universities for tournaments as well as funding our own home games. A personal goal I’ve set for myself is to help beginners get a better understanding of the game as well as improving their techniques. Lastly, we hope to maintain a consistent practice schedule to prepare our team for future competitions. North Carolina State is one of our main competitors and we hope to play them this year along with other universities such as ECU and Maryland.

W. Basketball The 2012-2013 school year is looking to be a very promising one for Women’s Basketball. Our team is looking strong with eight returning

players, three of whom are seniors, and many new faces from the incoming freshman class. We also have another big addition. We will have a new coach, Jamar Banks, who played basketball in college at Arkansas-Little Rock and has coached many other varsity teams. Everyone is really looking forward to working with him. We are extremely excited for the new additions to our team and the growing that will be taking place. This year, our main focus will be placed on having successful outcomes in our upcoming tournaments. We also look to build our team and program as a club sport. We get off to a quick start with our first tournament being only two short weeks away at Wake Forest. We’re hoping to get to work right away and be fully prepared. Although many of the tournaments we attend are pretty tough, this year it seems that regionals, which are going to be held at Georgia Southern University, looks to be the most challenging. and exciting tournament. Some of the most competitive basketball teams from schools all across the region will be competing such as Virginia Tech and East Carolina University. We are looking forward to this season and are ready to get back out on the court.

Cycling

Our Goals: We're changing up our typical

membership options this year so we'll have not only a competitive aspect, but also a "club" aspect. This will allow everyone to not only experience the general perks of being on the team, such as sponsorships through Patagonia or Black Cat, or being able to get one of our jerseys, but it will also give them the chance to realize the great things that come from cycling. This, which I'm sure would be agreed upon by everyone who has been. apart of our program, is the greatest benefit of them all.

The Competition: My goal is for our biggest

competition to be ourselves. Although there is a team aspect, cycling is very dependent on individual performance. Beating other teams is the ultimate objective, but I think it will be through testing one another that we will complete this goal. We look to carry on our tradition of conference domination as well as a National's presence.

With our first practice being Monday night,

the Women’s Ultimate team, the Nonads, is feeling very good about the coming year. We had a good turnout, and all of the women who showed seem very promising in both skill and commitment level. With approximately ten returning players, all of which are very solid, we are hoping to have our best season yet. Our new captain, Terran Tout, will also be crucial and awesome in getting our team up to that next level. This year, one of our definite goals is to make it to Regionals once again, and hopefully perform better at Regionals than in the previous year. We would also love to have a higher retention rate than in previous years, and continue to foster the loving relationship that each and every member of the team has with each other. It is hard to predict which team will be our biggest competitor this year, as teams can change greatly from year to year, but we have always had a pretty big (and definitely friendly) rivalry with UNC-Greensboro’s Women’s team, the G Spots. In the previous year, we played much better against many teams that we used to lose to pretty badly, so this year it would be

7

awesome to pull out some wins against some of those teams from the bigger universities. We will see many of these teams at NC State’s tournament, which is the last week of October, so that will most likely be our most challenging tournament, at least this semester. All of the Women’s Ultimate officers as well as all of the returning members are incredibly excited about this coming year. We hope to have the best team ASU has ever seen, and as always, have tons of fun!

M. Ultimate GET HYPED!!! Entering

this fall season, Appalachian State’s Men’s Ultimate is firing on all cylinders. This year our team will be building on the foundation of Nomad Ultimate, and then some. The past few years have been the most successful in our teams history due to strong team chemistry, and down right hard work on at practice. Our president Justin Allen, and VP Michael Neve certainly are key models on and off the field as we look to improve ourselves physically and mentally. The first week of practice already showed ourselves that we are going to be a team that cannot be overlooked. In recent years, our freshman class has been getting better every year, and we are expecting no change from that this fall. A great rookie turnout has already been present the first week of practice and we expect the highest from them, aiming to enhance their playing abilities. Even though we lost some leaders such as Micah Hood, Danny Niwinski, and Evan Howey, we still have a strong returning class looking to step up and make an impact. Seniors Spencer

Olmstead, Pat Welsh, and Vader will all have significant roles on the team, as they will help model excellence. After a frustrating end to our collegiate season last year, the Nomads are ready to strike with vengeance. Even though our collegiate season starts in the spring, we will still be competing and growing as a team in the fall. Our overall goal for this year will be to strengthen our team through tremendous work ethic and a positive, reinforcing attitude. With out a doubt, our main priority is to succeed in the Sectionals tournament in the Spring and advance to Regionals. This is a feat that App State has never achieved. Beyond this, our opportunities are limitless. Our section has some tremendous competitors across the state, however, some certainly are going to be tougher opponents than others. Specifically UNC, NC State, and UNC Wilmington are all top-level programs that we see our selves matching up well against. Everyone is also looking forward to playing the Bums of College of Charleston, a team we overlooked last year in Wilmington at Sectionals,

which will not happen again. Every tournament we play in we will have high expectations to succeed. Look out for us taking down big names through out the year, and come support the Nomads at our first home tournament, the Blue Ridge Blowout. Every day and every practice is just an investment to our team and ourselves: putting Money In The Bank. Come game time, we look to cash out and run through our opponents, but the trick is to see who has invested more.

Fencing

Photo submitted by Addison Miles

The Appalachian State University Fencing Club is prepping for its most successful year since its conception as a club sport. Filled with new and eager members, both veteran and inexperienced beginner fencers, the club has already surpassed its goals for increasing membership. The Fencing Club of 2012-2013 will be hosting its two annual tournaments, Massacre on the Mountain and the Yosef Open in the upcoming months. In addition to these home tournaments, members will be traveling abroad to compete against various fencing clubs within North Carolina. Every year the ASU Fencing club travels to North Carolina State University to compete in the NC Div2/3/Y14 National Qualifying Tournament. This year, the club has a very good chance of winning in this tournament. By continuing traditions and creating new ones, by educating new fencers and perfecting veteran members, the ASU Fencing Club for this year is going to be a formable club on and off the piste.

Women's Soccer is ready and excited for another fun, competitive, and winning season! This year we have a brand new set of

officers/team captains--Katie Kaplan (President), Kylie Payne (Vice President), Ginny Gills (Secretary), and Bailey Pages (Treasurer). We have worked together all summer and can now proudly introduce our new coaching staff--Conor Sosebee (Head Coach) and Vickie Rich (Strength and Conditioning Coach). With these new officers and coaches, the team plans on making this the best season that Women's Club Soccer has ever experienced! Our first practice provided us with a great start to the season with a turnout of almost 50 girls. With this particular group of girls, our plans of heading to both Regionals and Nationals seems more possible than it has ever been in the past. Also, we are well underway with plans of many fundraisers and potential sponsors for this season. We can already tell that it is going to be a great year full of memories and success!

Snowboarding The snowboard team is super stoked about our upcoming season. We have a great outlook for this year with many

returning members and a huge turnout at the snowboarding interest meeting. We are expecting big things from our team this year and absolutely plan to make it to Regionals and nationals once again. ASU is a force to reckon with in our conference and we look forward to lots of snow and new members!

The Appalachian State Club Women’s Lacrosse Team began practicing this week and is proud to say this season looks like their most promising one yet. With returning players and 15 new girls, the team is extremely excited to start bonding and playing together as a talented unit. Last year the team had a very successful season, which ended after a tournament in Wilmington where they won multiple games. This year can only get better with the new talent and new intensity that was present in even the first practice. Lizzy Lagasse returned this year as the team’s president while Anna Norwood (VP), Alexis Brundage (Secretary) and Emily Ayotte (Treasurer) are serving as new officers. The officers are very confident that this year is App State’s year to make it to regionals, making UNC-Chapel Hill their biggest competition. Along with UNC, App State has some competitive games scheduled this fall, such as High Point University and Duke University. While regionals are an obvious ambition, becoming a true unified team is an even bigger goal. Becoming a close-knit team will be the key to the Women’s Lacrosse Team’s success. To begin the team bonding, the girls have a camping trip planned early in the season to get to know each other outside of a lacrosse setting.

Women’s Club Volleyball

plans on having a very successful year! We had around 50 girls come out for the club, giving us enough people for five teams, including a Nationals team and 4 Regional teams. This year will be a new experience because we had so many players graduate this past spring, but we are looking forward to mixing up the teams with some new faces. Based off of team placements we can predict that all five of our teams will be highly competitive this season. The teams goals include getting into the gold bracket at Nationals in the Spring, and being highly competitive at the Regional tournaments we play at (possibly bringing home a few titles!). Nationals will be the most competitive and challenging tournament for our club as a whole, but we have the confidence that we will be able to do Appalachian State proud! Club Volleyball would like to wish the other club sports the best of luck in their upcoming seasons! Article by Beth Dunton, Secretary AHO Men’s Rugby has kicked into gear in their first week of practice, boasting a sizable squad of new players. The first week is instrumental in teaching the newer guys how to play the game, especially since many of them have never played rugby before. With a strong presence from returning players and an experienced group of officers, AHO hopes to establish a strong foothold during the pre-conference matches this Fall. President Michael Markofski, Treasurer Matt Markofski and Match Secretary Harris Lewis all return as officers from last year. They are joined by Club Sports Secretary Thomas Longo and Website Administrator Zach Macklin. Last year's club sports secretary, Ben Harrington-Smith, has moved to the position of Vice-President. The first match this season will be against UNC Greensboro on September 8th. Greensboro will remember the defeat they suffered to AHO in the semi-finals of last year's matrix season, and will be out for revenge. AHO will also be hosting Rucktoberfest at the end of October, and we hope to have many fans and supporters out there with us!

W. Rugby Photo submitted by Kasey Furphy

AHO Women's Rugby is looking forward to a fun and successful season. We have quite a few new comers this year to add to our team.

Last season we only lost a handful of players and have high hopes that our returners and new comers will fill the spaces with ease. Making it to Nationals last season was truly a great experience, one that we have hopes of revisiting this season. As well as making it back to Nationals, we wish to have a winning season both in the Fall and Spring. Our schedule is packed with great matches for the Spring. We plan on both traveling and hosting home games almost every weekend this spring. Our first matches are scheduled for September 8th against VT and UGA. And as always AHOWFC is looking forward to Rucktoberfest where we get to see a lot of strong teams. AHO women's rugby is looking forward to an exciting season and at the same time representing ASU Club Sports with the upmost pride.

Equestrian Things are already looking exciting for the Equestrian team! We hosted our Open House this past weekend at Foothills Equestrian Center and

had 61 new riders come out! That’s almost double the amount of members we had last year. It’s looking like our competing teams are going to be even stronger this year and we hope to continue climbing up in the placing. One of our biggest goals this year is to continue to become a more unified team. As our numbers keep growing we have to make sure that each individual feels like part of the team. We also hope to see our members go to Regionals and Nationals again this year. It would be great for us to be able to send an entire team to Nationals for the IDA! Photo submitted by Katie Sedlmeyer

Virginia Intermont is always our toughest competition since they are one of the highest ranked teams nationally each year. Hopefully we’ll be able to continue to be a good competitor against them. Overall, we are excited to get this year started and can’t wait to kick off the season with our home show at Foothills Equestrian Center on September 30!

Executive’s Corner

a word from our executives...

The Club Sports Executives are full of energy and have been working hard to leave their legacy on the Club Sports Program. Each

executive brings their own prospective to the table and there is a great representation for all the different types of teams that Club Sports has. On Wednesday August 29th, they held their first Club Sports Council meeting. All teams were present and accounted for and everyone seems excited for the upcoming year. At CS Council, representatives designed and chaired 5 committees that will improve our program. The committees are: Fundraising, Friendship/Unity, Marketing/Advertising, Manual Updates/Policies, and Service. These 5 committees will meet throughout the year and provide excellent opportunities for teams to obtain budget points, club wide unity, develop updates for the manual, raise some funds and get Club Sports known on campus. Everyone is super excited and this year is going to be one for the history books!
