kiing can be defined as “the art of catching cold and going broke, while rapidly heading nowhere at a great personal risk.” However, on the Alpine Ski Team, we are heading straight for the finish line. The Appalachian State Ski Team is a bit different than the other club sports that App has to offer, since we need snow to ski. Our competition season begins in January and ends mid-February. We normally have dry lands in the fall, which normally consist of runs around campus and hikes. During the racing season, we travel to mountains in Virginia and Sugar Mountain here in North Carolina to compete against schools that are apart of USCSA Southeast Conference. We get to meet amazing racers from JMU, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Virginia Tech, and NC
State. This past year, the men’s team placed first in the conference and the women’s team placed fourth overall! On the ski team, we are just a bunch of ski bums who want nothing more than to hit the slopes before or after (sometimes even during) class. Together, we form amazing memories that can come from long car trips, pit stops at Dairy Queen, 2:00am cheesy tots, and attempted sledding on a golf course, as well as cheering your friends on as they power down the course or busting your butt on ice as you tumble down the slope. On behalf of the Team, we are so excited to meet new members! We can’t wait to meet all of y’all at our interest meeting, which is on September 6th at 7pm in Walker Hall, Room 302! Ski ya then!

Ready? A This summer has been far from boring for the Archery Team up here in Boone. We’ve been busy readying the field for the Fall semester, when we get the majority of our new members for the year. During the summer semesters, while most students were off the mountain, a few dedicated archers built five brand new targets out at our practice field at the Watauga Gun Club. With the 154 interested students that signed up during Welcome Week, our semester promises to start with a bang. We may even have a couple dozen shiny new arrows with which to christen those targets at our first practice. The great thing about archery season is that it allows us plenty of time to practice and get back in the swing of things during the Fall semester, when there aren’t many shoots, before ramping up in the Spring to having competitions every weekend. The executive board this year plans to take full advantage of that semester of practice to jumpstart team bonding and involvement, by planning fun shoots, workshops, fundraisers, and more. As for the Spring, we’re planning a hosted archery championship the likes of which North Carolina hasn’t seen in years. Look out archers, this year should be one to remember!

Women’s bASKETBALL
Last season we had many goals for both on and off the court. This year our goals are to have a winning record, increase attendance and turnout at our home tournament, as well as grow closer as a team and perform as one on the court. The girls that showed up to the Welcome Weekend as well as UREC Fest were very eager in beginning the season, which is something we like to see. Jesse Frank, a Junior Accounting major, who was
8
out coach last year will be coaching again this year. We are very excited to have Jesse as head coach again. He was assistant coach the first semester of last year and then moved up to the head coach position. He knows many of the girls already and is also familiar with their strengths and weaknesses. He knows how to run the practices and is also familiar with the time and dedication it takes because of how many weekends out of the semester we are gone. He is a big asset to our team. This semester we will be traveling to three tournaments: UNC, NC State, UNCG. We will also be hosting another home tournament. Last year we had a good turnout of teams with 6 teams, and we hope to have even more this year in order to increase the competition.
WELCOME
As the new Club Basketball season is about to start the returning players and officers are very excited to see who is going to be joining our basketball family. Through setting up contact tables for students to see whether it was at the club expo or at UREC Fest we were able to grab the attention of almost 50 girls who were interested in joining our team. In preparation of our Welcome and Information Meeting we are very excited to see some new faces.
We are all very excited to start the season off strong with good, hard practices. We look forward to getting to know the newcomers and having fun with them on and off the court.

EQUESTRIAN Ivy Wagner | President
into the Year to Come Hi Everyone! My name is Ivy Wagner and I am the President of the Appalachian State Equestrian Team for the 2017 – 2018 year. I am so excited to hold this position and can’t wait for the year to come! I will also take this time to congratulate and welcome the rest of the Appalachian State Equestrian Team 2017-2018 Executive Board, consisting of junior Olivia Moran as Vice President, sophomore Chloe Schaefer as Secretary, senior Michaela Herberg as Club Sports Council Representative, and senior Rachel Hintermeister as Treasurer. I would also like to welcome our new officers and captains: Dressage Captain Maggie Elmore, Competing Hunt Seat Captain Kendall Bergethon, NonCompeting Hunt Seat Captain Hailey Plymire, Western Captain Annon Blue, Show Chair Luke Williams, and Social Chair Rose Rossell. We truly have a great team in place for the next year and I see great things in the team’s future! It may seem like our team has a large number of officers and captains, and in truth, we do. Our team is unique in the way that we offer three different disciplines of equestrian riding: western,
10
Club Sports Illustrated // Issue No. 85
hunt seat, and dressage. Our team has been growing since its establishment in 1994 when hunt seat was the only discipline offered and we are proud of our ability to cater to so many types of riding. In the past couple semesters, however, the size of our dressage team has been meek at best, shrinking so small last semester that our dressage members were unable to compete because they did not have enough participants to meet the standards of our competitive governing body. So far, there has been a lot of interest in the dressage team by potential new members and we are hopeful we will be able to revamp the dressage team once again this semester. Even with our growth as a Club Sports Team in the past 23 years, the App State Equestrian Team is sadly still not very widely known across campus. This is something we hope to change this year. The largest goal we have as a team for the year is to increase the team’s involvement in campus and community events along with improving individual member involvement. By achieving this
goal, the App State Equestrian Team will hopefully become more well known in and a larger contributor to the Appalachian and Boone community as well as growing stronger as a membership. As a means of achieving this goal, the team has enacted a new point system where members can receive points for participating in events and meetings throughout the semester with a goal of accumulating one of the three most amounts of points at the end of each semester to win a prize for their accomplishment. It will be my pleasure to serve as the 2017-2018 Appalachian State Equestrian Team president and I cannot wait to see where this team goes this year. We hostedan interest meeting Wednesday, August 30th in PSU room 137C Attic Window at 7pm and will have weekly meetings in the same time and place every Wednesday for the rest of the semester if anyone would like to learn more! We accept riders at all levels in these disciplines and members do not try out to be a part of the team.

The Fencing TVeam is excited to be back after an awesome summer! Our members spent their breaks doing a variety of exciting things and it’s been great to hear about everyone’s adventures. Our Club Sports Council Representative, junior epeeist Hunter Lee spent his summer interning with an IT group in Asheville while sophomore sabrist Niko Kapentanich-Pittser enjoyed a study abroad trip to Russia with Appalachian’s business program. It was a much-needed break, but we can all agree that we’re excited to be back. At the end of July, our office in Quinn flooded after what we believe to be a mishap with the heater/air conditioning unit. This resulted in the devastating loss of most of our weapons and electrical equipment. President Maria Cilenti is working to assess the damages this week as we enter into our first week of practice. The officers are aiming to begin fundraising soon in order to replace the damaged
items, and we are also hoping to work with the University to resolve this issue. We created a GoFundMe that has currently raised over $1,300 in donations from our families, friends, and App State Fencing alumni. The support has been great and we’re looking forward to continuing this fundraiser. This incident definitely wasn’t how we hoped to open the year, but we’re determined to be resourceful and keep a positive attitude! Our officers had a great time representing the team and speaking with students about our organization at the UREC Night and Club Expo last week. Our interest meeting went really well and we’re looking forward to welcoming lots of new fencers to our team. The first practice of the year will be next Thursday, August 31st on the last court of Quinn. We’re looking forward to a great year! FENCING Lauren Brackett | Secretary

A Storm is men's lacrosse Samuel Ingles | Defenseman After a successful 20162017 lacrosse campaign, the Appalachian State Men’s Lacrosse team intends to hit the ground running in the fall to build upon their success of the previous season. Last season, the Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 7-1 record and a playoff seed in the SELC Tournament. In addition, the Mountaineers finished nationally ranked, seated at 25th in the country. The Mountaineers will have to recover from the loss of a large graduating senior class, all of whom contributed to the success of the lacrosse program over the past few years. However, a steady set of incoming freshman and a laundry list of solid returners could make the Mountaineers a force to reckon with. On offense, top attack goal scorer David Hayes is set to lead the Mountaineer offense once again through another successful campaign. At midfield, Junior Jack Rich and Senior Cole Eglowstein are set to wreak havoc on both ends of the field. Junior Defensemen Michael Godwin will reprise his role 14
JOSHUA HARRIS
JOSHUA HARRIS as a lock down defenseman on the Mountaineer defensive unit. Finally, between the pipes for the Mountaineers will be Senior Mikey Fifield, who plans to build of a spectacular Junior season where he had the highest save percentage in the SELC, and ranked 5th in save percentages in the MCLA. In addition, the influx of freshmen will definitely contribute to the overall success in the upcoming season. During the fall season, the Mountaineers will face opponents Davidson University, High Point University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University, and Montreat College.

Women’s Lacrosse is looking forward to starting our Fall 2017 season! After a great turn out at Club Expo, and our interest meeting, we are off to a rockin’ start. Practice times and game dates have (for the most part) been finalized. Practices this semester will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:008:00pm or occasionally 8:0010:00pm; you can find out practice specifics by emailing: appstatewlax@gmail.com. We plan to host games and travel for competitions; destinations include the College of Charleston and Clemson. There will be an abundance of team bonding opportunities this year! The officers have been working hard to make sure we have fun both on and off of the field. Our lovely members will be seen around Boone having a blast, from group bowling and hiking to team dinners and social events will other club sports.

An important number for all members, new and old, to know is our team dues. This year the dues are: 250$ per year or 150$ per semester. This money will go towards league dues, referee fees, hotel costs, tournament costs, APPAREL, etc. And might I add- our apparel is dope! Our amazing treasurer is happy to work with anyone to make individual payment plans if needed. I am looking forward to seeing all that our team does this year! We have a large amount of new players with great potential. I joined the team second semester of the Freshman year, and have loved it since. Women’s Lacrosse has given me a new group of friends and the chance to play a sport I love, once again. If you want to have fun, get in shape, and make great friends, I highly recommend joining to Women’s Lacrosse.

It’s that time of the year again, when the fiercest women of the mountain come together and transform into warriors on the rugby pitch. AHO Women’s Rugby is starting back up this year with a solid group of dedicated returners who are ready to share their rugby wisdom and their love for the game to create a
me. team like no other. AHO is going into the year with new skills, more experience, new ruggers and will be ready to face their competitors with full force. The AHO women spent their summer trying their hand in a few 7s tournaments. In June, members played in Asheville’s 7s tournament. This tournament was a learning curve for the AHO athletes as most them
SADDIE LAGLE
had never experienced 7s before. The players left everything they had out on the pitch and came out of the tournament stronger and more knowledgeable about the game. July brought these mountain women to the beach for the Cape Fear 7s Tournament in Wilmington where the team faced tough competition but put up their best fight. On day two of Caper Fear 7s, AHO came out on top of all their matches, thanks to excellent teamwork and improvement in their 7s skills. A summer of 7s has provided AHO women with diverse experiences in the rugby world and allowed the athletes to bond on and off the pitch. The team will be bringing all they have learned into this year’s 15s season and hopefully more 7s tournaments will be in the future. As AHO prepares for the upcoming season, recruitment is in full swing and there was an abundance of new faces at the first practice of the year.
Currently the team is focused on preparing for the first matrix match of the season at Elon on September 16th. The captains for this year have been hard at work developing practice plans to benefit and grow every athletes’ abilities. This year, AHO is fortunate to have three new captains stepping up to lead the team. Melina Gonzalez, better known as Melon, will be serving as the captain for the forwards. Alyssa Martinez and Ciera Thompson, aka Socks and Smiley, are a dream team as the captains of the back line. These three determined, talented, and tough ruggers will be leading AHO Women’s Rugby to their full potential this year. With strong leadership, a great team dynamic, and new athletes, there’s no doubt AHO will be thriving this year and will be a force to be reckoned with.. Tea Snowboard Team Gabriel Duff | President
Snowboard Team in 80º weather? Heck yeah! The Appalachian State Snowboard Team does not go dormant during the warmer portion of the year, but rather focuses on making the upcoming season as rad as possible. Our team is currently working on helping out our local sponsor, Recess Snow and Skate, with political moves to legalize skateboarding in Boone. It’s all a work in progress, but we are striving to make a difference. The Appalachian State Snowboard Team has been in full recruitment mode for the past couple weeks and we are now getting around to having our first meeting. We are going to squad up at the Convocation
Center (room 62) on September 14th at 8:30 if there are any hidden gnarcats out there that want to represent App State on the powder. Our team is gearing up for the new season and enjoying the weather while its still warm. Our team is also taking a new focus this year to help be more involved in the Boone community. We are also focusing on some fun shenanigans for our preseason, so don’t think we are all business. Its not too late to become an App State Gnarcat, so I challenge all boarders to come join the real shred team of Watauga county. Everyone knows it… We are the best dang snowboarders on the mountain. #Three4Dale #ShredNC

Last night was the Nonads first official practice. With our numbers high and our spirits even higher, we can’t wait to tackle this year with some familiar faces and a lot of new ones too! The freshman class represented our team well with the attendance they brought. While some are brand new to Frisbee, other players came out and impressed the veterans, including our coach George Ehrhardtt. Besides teaching Political Science at App, George is super knowledgeable about Ultimate and we look forward to learning more about the sport through his time and wisdom.
We’re so stoked to host some awesome teams again this year and make new friends through the wonderful sport of ultimate. Since our team was young last year, we only lost two seniors coming into the new season. Bree Pacey, former president and Rachel Dodgen, former Treasurer. We will miss these Frisbaes both on and off the field but can’t wait to see where they go with their future endeavors! As I go into my second season as a Nonad, I can’t wait to start playing in tournaments with some of my best friends. From Asheville to Charleston, the Nonads are ready to tackle (not literally, Frisbee is a non-contact sport) their competition and bring home the W’s from all of our tournaments this semester! Although traveling to new places around the area is fun and exciting, I am especially excited for our home tournament this semester, Boone Blowout. CLUB SPORTS COUNCIL Kevin Meyer | Executive Officer
UTIVE It has been an exciting start to the new year for Club Sports and all of the teams are prepping for the beginning of their seasons. Recruitment for the teams was a huge success this year due to Club Sports’ strong presence at the Club Expo and UREC Fest. We are very excited to see our programs continue to grow with all of the new members this year. As the recruitment phase of the season is coming to an end, many of the teams are beginning their practices/ workouts. All of the Executive Officers have been working hard to process each teams’
MIC’s so they are able to practice. We are all working diligently to get these done so that all of the teams can continue practicing.
Last night, we held our first Club Sports Council Meeting and met with a representative from each of the Club Sports teams. We had great conversations about our expectations of the council members and discussed some of the goals that we hope to accomplish as a group throughout the year. We are looking forward to working with these passionate and determined individuals this year and can’t wait to see what they accomplish. Issue No. 85 // Club Sports Illustrated
