A Team That Became My Family Shannon Patterson | 2018-2019 Vice President Archery
Rowan Parris
I remember going to the UREC Expo this past fall and running into someone from my hometown shouting my name to get me to join this team. I had never considered continuing to shoot, especially on a collegiate team. Though, once he mentioned it, the thought had manifested itself to become a desire. So I took the next step, filled out my forms, submitted my costs, and joined the team. At first, I had no idea what I was getting myself in to. I had only joined as a recreational member, and I had only known one person on the team. There were a few nerve-filled meetings trying to figure out how this club works, what the people
are like, and where I will fit in. I hadn’t shot my bow in a few years and was worried about bringing it up here and not doing well compared to the others. Soon the first practice came around where I could actually go and shoot with a new bow that my father and I invested in, since shooting was always a way that we bonded. Turns out that my skill hadn’t completely left and I was shooting a lot better than I thought I would. Everyone around me was giving compliments, lending advice, and just making sure that I was doing well. With each practice, and with each meeting, I began to get more involved. I upgraded to a competitive member, and began going to some of the competitions. Before I knew it, I was making some amazing friends and my name was getting known within this community. We were cracking jokes, messing with each other, but still supporting each other and encouraging
everyone with their shots and performance. It was an amazing experience for me to see the change in myself and others the more I was involved. I believe that it helped to make the transition into college easier for myself by having this community where I’m doing something that I love with some incredible people. It led me to make the decision to run for an officer position for the next year, which I ended up receiving. My life has become better since discovering this group. It’s a way to share a passion with people who care about you and want to be around you. I found a second family in Archery Club, and wouldn’t trade it for anything.

High Country Cycling Classic A Success! By: Annie Pharr | President Cycling | Featured Article
This past weekend were the long-awaited home road races for the App State Cycling Team. The High Country Cycling Classic has been a long time in the making, and it was exciting to finally see all of the hard work paid off. The team partnered with the Boone Area Cyclists for the third year to host the races, and team officers Matt Jones and David Burstein were the main race promoters and directors. This was the first year that the home races were brought back to Boone and hosted in App’s backyard, which was a highlight for racers on the team who have never raced in downtown Boone before. Saturday’s road race was held in Cove Creek starting at the old cove creek school, and races ranged from 26 to 66 miles
based on category. The ACCC and SECCC sent collegiate teams to the dual conference race weekend, but cold wet weather Saturday kept the turnout fairly low. The morning races were lucky to have the rain hold off, but by the afternoon the temperatures dropped to brutal levels and the Men’s A race had to be shortened by a lap because of dangerous conditions. Kyle Ellis was one of the few racers to actually finish the incredibly cold race, and he came in an impressive 2nd place despite near hypothermia. The team is grateful to all the volunteers who came out to help as corner marshals despite the cold weather, and we are lucky to have such a dedicated community of cycling supporters. Luckily Sunday was a much nicer day, and the chilly morning temperatures gave way to a beautifully crisp afternoon. The sun was out and plenty of spectators were able to watch the downtown criterium. This race was especially exciting because it is the first time in nearly two decades that a crit has been held
downtown. The highlight of the course was the long stretch down Rivers Street that had a 180 degree turn at the end where racers came back up to turn right on Depot. The field sizes for Sunday were much larger, for example 20 racers came out to race Women’s A and 37 came for Men’s A. The team even had some mountain bike racers try road racing for the first time. Eric Magyar and Cam Travis raced the Men’s D crit, giving a completely different cycling discipline a try. Marcel Gutierrez and Wheeler Davis finished 15th and 16th in the Men’s A crit among steep competition. The weekend was also supported by many local sponsors who donated items for raffles and race primes. Magic Cycles opened early for racers to get tune ups and gear, and many restaurants on the course offered discounts for racers and spectators. Overall, it was a great weekend with some incredible racing. We are already looking forward to next year! Next up for the team is conference championships in Maryland this weekend, followed by Collegiate Road Nationals in Colorado the week after.

3rd Annual Open Show By: Luke Williams | Show Chair Equestrian
On April 28-29, 2018 the Appalachian State Equestrian Team will be hosting our 3rd annual open horse show at the Broyhill Equestrian Center, in Blowing Rock NC. This show is great fund raising opportunity for the team to fund IHSA shows for future seasons. The cost of the IHSA shows is ever growing and with funding which results from events such as this we can continue to perform and represent Appalachian State University. Our riders come from various backgrounds and levels. This show allows for App. State riders to host a show and have a more in-depth knowledge of the inner workings an equestrian
event. We advertise for the open show in various areas and riding stables including: North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, thus pulling exhibitors of all ages from all over the region. We will be running the show a little different than in past years. For example, we will be hosting a two day show in comparison to a one day event. This will ensure that we can raise more money to invest in future events and activities. This allows for us to grow the shows name, thus guaranteeing a successful show year after year. On Sunday April 29, 2018, we will be hosting our very first hunter
derby $1000 added, presented by MD Sales and Training & Mimosa Hills Farm LLC. This is a very exciting class for the team to put on for we will be paying out our winners, up to twelve places, money for their winnings. This event will be hosting many other disciplines including and not limiting to: in-hand, field hunter, hunter under saddle, over fences, and western disciplines. “We look forward to this great opportunity for the Appalachian State Equestrian Team to work alongside our areas talented equestrians and horses”!

Welcome to Illyria By: Maddie Marcellino | Club Sports Representative Lacrosse Women’s
Our new officers have been elected! I figured I’d use this platform to introduce these lovely ladies. Here’s a huge thank you and shout-out to our 2017-2018 officers for doing such an amazing job. We saw goodbye to our seniors with tears in our eyes but know that we will see them again. President: The President for the 2018-2019 school year is….me! Hey y’all! My name is Maddie and I’m a junior from Edgewater, Maryland. I am an (Pre-Med) Anthropology major here at Appalachian. I’m looking forward to going into my fourth year in the High Country with my lacrosse girls! I’ve met some of my best friends on this team and I hope more people can do the same. Vice President: The fantastic freshman from Virginia, Kaitlyn Turner, will be taking on new roles as our Vice President! Number 33 on the field and number 1 in our hearts. She joined the team as a way to meet new people and play her favorite sport. As an officer, she hopes to get closer with all our lovely lady laxers. Kaitlyn’s favorite color is blue and rocks the number 33 on the field. If she played another club sport it would be soccer. Secretary: New Jersey native, Kelsey
Flexon, will be fulfilling the role of our new secretary. Kelsey is a freshman and looks forward to seeing how much our team will grow throughout her next three years. Her favorite color is turquoise. Kelsey joined the team to meet new people and get in some good (and fun) workouts. Treasurer: A spectacular sophomore from Kernersville, Stacey Donavant, was elected as treasurer. She is majoring in pre-professional Exercise Science and hopes to go to PA school in the future. She joined the team to reintroduce herself to lacrosse and meet make new friends. Stacey hopes to get all our finances in order and I know she is going to do a phenomenal job! Her favorite food in cheese and if she played another club sport she would join the club swim team! Club Council Representative: TMAC, aka Taylor McIntosh, is our 2018-2019 Club Sports
Council Representative. T-Mac is a freshman from Raleigh majoring in Studio Art. She started playing lacrosse her freshman year of high school (and we are sure glad she started). Her favorite food is spaghetti, nom nom nom! Taylor decided to run for an officer position because she loves lacrosse and wants to help make our team the best that it can be. Social Chair: Our current priceless President, Emma Bouma, is taking over the role of our Social Chair for the next school year. Emma is a junior majoring in Art Management. She is from Amsterdam and started playing lacrosse her freshmen year of High School. Her favorite color (of the day) is lilac and she rocks the number three on the lacrosse field. This social butterfly is sure to make our semester fun! If there is anyone that has the ability to instantly make a day better, it’s Emma Bouma!

Rugby in the Nations Capital By: Katie Sorrell | Club Sports Representative Rugby Women’s
AHO’s schedule is starting to slow down as the spring semester of 2018 comes to a close. Since our last update, we played in the first round of playoffs that represented the CGU(Carolina’s Geographic Union). We headed down to South Carolina to play College of Charleston for the chance of making it into the final round of playoffs. Although it was a hard fought game, we didn’t end up taking home the win. Grayson Arthurs
Yes a win is always nice, but I know AHO was happy to get the opportunity to participate in a playoff game. At the end of the day, all that mattered was that we played our hearts out and left it all on the field. This game was not only a play off game, but it was also the last game for a few of our seniors. Some tears were shed when we had our post game huddle and wrapped it up with a big AHO cheer. Although it was sad, the loss against Charleston Katie Sorrell

made us realize how strong we are as a team, and also how much more room we have to grow. Since our match with Charleston, we haven’t been too busy. In this upcoming weekend AHO will go to Washington D.C. to compete in a 15s tournament! For the past few weeks, your lovely rug-baes have mainly been focusing on staying in shape and preparing for the games that await them in the nation’s capital. This tournament is a huge deal because AHO will be competing with team’s from all over the country. Not only are there going to be a lot of teams, but these teams will also be super skilled. We’re excited to play experienced teams to gain new skill but also meet other rugby ladies! We’re hoping to bring our new rugby skills back to Boone to better future generations of AHO. Not only is playing in D.C. a
cool experience, it’s also something that teams rarely get invited too. A lot of AHO are super excited about this opportunity to go to Washington. For the past few weeks we are mainly just trying to stay consistent with practice and strength training. Practices have been consisting of strength training and cardio, in preparation for D.C. Even though we’ve had adverse weather conditions, we still try our best to get in some physical activity whenever we can. During one of the many snow days here in Boone, we still managed to make it out to a practice field in icy weather conditions. Our warm up was scraping the snow off of the field. Although the conditions weren’t ideal, it was fun getting to play rugby in the snow.

The semester may be winding down, but the tennis team’s spring season is just now revving up. A few weeks ago we were supposed to travel to Knoxville for a tournament but a bad forecast cancelled the event unfortunately. However, we were able to sneak into the draw of another tournament that was in Cary on the same weekend. Thanks to a school dropping out we were able to still compete in a big tournament and were hoping to make the most of it. After a close defeat to a strong Duke team, we were able to win 3 consecutive matches to conclude our weekend. We notched wins over VCU, American University, and UNC Chapel Hill. The team is Shell Wood

on quite a hot streak winning 12 of our last 16 matches! On this past Sunday, we travelled down to Elon for a dual match against their team. This was a great opportunity for other team members to travel and compete that usually do not get to play in tournaments. We had a great time and picked up 6 individual match wins as well. To conclude our spring season we have two tournaments on backto-back weekends. In just a few days we are heading down to Wilmington for the UNCW Spring Invitational. This tournament is a bit smaller with not as many teams, so we have high hopes that we can do very well there. The following weekend we are going to Blacksburg, Virginia for Virginia Tech’s Spring Invitational. We are taking an A and B team to both tournaments so we are trying to end our season with a big bang.

As the 2017-2018 year comes to a close so does my time as an executive officer. It has been a great journey and I have learned so much about myself, the Club Sports program, and my fellow executives.
