Archery Life By: Byron Burrell  |  Head Coach Archery

If you have been a part of the Appalachian Archery Club at Appalachian State University then you have probably heard of me. My name is Byron Burrell. I have been a part of Appalachian Archery from the moment I knew it existed. I was actually voted in as a coach at the very first practice ever held. Since that time I have been Vice-president, President, Watauga Gun Club Liaison, Coach (again), and my most recent position, Head Coach. I have been a part of the club through its struggles and achievements. I have been around since the purchase of our first target to the completion of our first hosted tournament. I have devoted every moment of time, and every penny I could afford to Appalachian Archery over the last 5 years, but finally my time is up.

See this club has meant the world to me. This club is where my family is. This club is where I made friendships that will last a lifetime, along with memories. This club has become such a part of my life that at the moment I really do not know how I am going to manage without it. See I had archery before I had Appalachian Archery Club, however the fact is that archery in combination with this club has become so much more.   The Appalachian Archery Club allowed me to grow from a confused young adult to the person I am now. This club has allowed me to help those around me, it allowed me to be the leader I always wanted to be, and overall helped me to become the person I always wanted to be. There just isn’t any other way to say it but leaving this club hurts. I feel so deeply for the members of this club and I wish them well in all that is before them.   The last thing I wish and hope is that the next executive board pushes and strives to

create memories. I hope that they press forward and do not forget the trials and tribulations that Appalachian Archery has already overcome, and understand that their will be more in the future. I hope that they understand that the alumni that come from the club will help in any way possible, but that there are limitations as to the help they can provide. Finally, I hope that the executive board knows that I have faith in them and their abilities and that watching them grow as individuals over the last year has also been one of the best parts of my time in Appalachian Archery.   So my time is up, and your time has just begun. Good luck and always remember the Appalachian Archery motto “ALWAYS MOVE FORWARD”!

The Cherry on Top of a Great Year By: Annie Pharr  |  President Cycling Team

As another year comes to an end for the cycling team, we are lucky to be able to reflect on some of our successes and look forward to our future opportunities. Looking back on the year, I want to take some time to highlight the team and all they have accomplished this year. During mountain bike season in the Fall, the team had some great finishes, most notably second place overall club team at mountain bike marathon nationals in Missoula, Montana. Team members have also won multiple national podiums for their individual accomplishments.   This past year at mountain bike nationals, Annie Pharr brought home the 2nd place medal in

short track, 4th place in cross country, and 4th place in overall women’s omnium. Jordan Bouldin was 3rd place for mens individual omnium and Kyle Ellis was 4th. App State was the overall team conference winner for this 2017 mountain bike season out of all the Atlantic Coast teams. For Cyclocross season in the winter, racers Garrett Clark and Wheeler Davis were able to travel to Reno, Nevada to represent the team in tough conditions on a national level. In road season this spring, race directors David Burstein and Matt Jones were able to cohesively work with community partners such as the Boone Area Cyclists to bring the home race weekend back to downtown Boone for the first time in over ten years. The App State team also paid to become a member of the Boone Chamber of Commerce this year, showing their prioritization of community involvement and reaching out to leaders beyond just the school’s campus. The team is lucky to have so much support from members in the

community and on campus, and it makes it more exciting to think about how these relationships can grow to continue to promote cycling and Appalachian State in the future.   Team members were able to not only perform well at races, but also have a lot of fun growing the team. We were able to host team cookouts, pizza parties, and group rides, building camaraderie and an inclusive team atmosphere. Overall, the success of the cycling team is largely due to the ability of its members to communicate well, work together to meet deadlines, plan competition logistics, and dedicate themselves to training so they can positively represent Appalachian State not only

regionally, but across the nation. The cherry on top of this year was when the team was honored with the “Appalachian Image Award” at the Student Organization Leadership Awards. This award is given to an organization “that demonstrates excellence in the fulfillment of its purpose, campus life enhancement, contributions to and general involvement at Appalachian.”     The team has worked hard to excel in their sport, and we were humbled and excited to be recognized by the university. Looking ahead, the next event that the team is focused on is Collegiate Road Nationals. The team is sending Will Johnson and Kyle Ellis to Grand Junction, Colorado, where they will compete in the individual time trial, road race, and criterium. These student athletes have to work hard to balance both school and training, prioritizing their schedule and responsibilities so they can make it to compete during exam time. We are thankful for such dedicated and strong riders who can represent our team and university so well, and we know that great results are to come. The team is looking forward to another great year starting next season, and is thankful for all the great accomplishments that came from this year.

Fencing Fun with Friends By: Lauren Brackett   |  Secretary Fencing

This year has proved to be an action-packed time full of growth and immense accomplishment for our team. Since the beginning of the fall semester, we have welcomed over twenty new members of all academic years and nearly doubled in overall membership size. In August, following the incident with our office in Quinn, our GoFundMe page received dozens of donations from alumni, parents, and teammates alike totaling over $2,000. This money allowed us to recover from the loss, fund more tournaments and expand our equipment inventory in light of our membership gains. Our tournament schedule was packed with exciting and new destinations for us including Charleston, SC, Greensboro,

Knoxville, and Raleigh. Teammates took home a variety of impressive medals at every tournament and gave their all at competitions across the state and region, and we were able to purchase a third electric strip which has greatly improved our practices. To sum up our year, President and junior epeeist Maria Cilenti noted that, “We’ve ended this year with tremendous accomplishments and are looking forward to working with our new officers throughout the upcoming schoolyear.”   While there are way too many to count, some of our teammates’ favorite memories from this year included the time when we were trapped in Waffle House, Sean dressing

up as sexy Yosef for Halloween, and when Patrick ate an entire handful of Bojangle’s seasoning in one swoop. Ian Brundige, a sophomore saberist and upcoming team Secretary, noted that his favorite memory was “having a lot of fun in Knoxville.” Other favorite memories include eating incredible amounts of McDonald’s and spending many extremely late nights in App Heights. Overall, our team has had a great year and we’re exciting to continue this tradition!

Our season is done but I know I won’t forget how amazing this past year was. In our last illustrated article I wanted to give a huge shout out to our almighty president, Emma Bouma. As our President, Emma has overseen everything our team has done this year. She diligently works with each officer to make sure each job is done correctly. She plans and leads weekly officer meetings to keep our team on-track. If there is no opportunity for in-person meetings, Emma plans practices and stays in constant contact with the team. Her efficiency results in very productive practices. A very important part of our team, our team swag (apparel), is designed by Emma and we love rocking it around campus. She oversees our officer elections, describing each position and encouraging members to run. She has organized our team without any drama, which is a phenomenal change in comparison to past years. We no longer have cliques because Emma broke them by establishing a family dynamic, with her as the “mom”. It may sound odd but this has worked out so well for our team and the effects are evident on and off the field.

The next president will have huge shoes to fill. Emma is able to balance so much work while maintaining a positive attitude; it is amazing! No matter how this paragraph is worded, Emma’s contributions to this team will be lessened. She is a leader that makes each and every player feel welcomed. Her actual lacrosse skills inspire others to work hard in order to compete on her level. She is truly a great president on and off the field and this team relies on her more than most members realize. We look forward to what the future officers and players bring to our program. Look for us around campus next year is our rockin’ apparel or at Universityhosted events to come hear more about this great team! XOXO

A Bitter Sweet Farewell to The 17’-18’ School Year By: Katie Sorrell  |  Club Sports Representative Rugby Women’s

As the end of the 17’-18’ school year comes to a close, I would like to dedicate this article to all the great times AHO has had this season. Throughout the year, we’ve had to overcome some difficulties with games getting canceled and other teams forfeiting. Although we’ve had some tough obstacles, our team has made the best of every situation   The fall semester was filled with recruiting events, tough teams, alumni plans and the participation of some amazing ladies. To start with, our Vice President scheduled an amazing alumni tailgate for the homecoming weekend in October. Not only did we get to bond as a new team, but we also got to hang out and talk to the old members of AHO. As a

task for the first year ruggers(rookies), we had to go up and talk to alumni and make them do weird and funny activities with us. For example, one of our tasks was to create a handshake with one of the alumni. Overall the tailgate was a blast and not only promoted current team member bonding, but also bonding amongst the retired members of AHO.   I think one of our most memorable events, was our tournament that we put together, and hosted here in Boone. As an annual AHO tradition, we hosted Rucktoberfest, in which teams from all over Carolina’s Geographic Union come to Boone to play some rugby. We had teams ranging from Charleston to Elon. We even got the NAVY’s rugby team to compete (and yes, i’m talking about THE navy). Throughout the whole weekend, we were able to bond and play against teams from all over the Carolinas’. Not only was it neat to play a whole lot of rugby, but we also got to build our relationships with the other teams, in hopes creating stronger

communication amongst the CGU’s teams.   Our spring semester wasn’t as eventful as our fall, but it was still a great time for AHO. Since we only got the play 3 games through the semester, we didn’t get as much playing time as we had hoped for. Although a small amount of playing time set us back, it also made us work that much harder. Practices were productive and often more meaningful when we had a match the following weekend. Because games were somewhat scarce, it was always super fun when we finally got to play.   Although the second semester wasn’t quite what we were hoping for, we still made the best of it and played our hearts out and remembered to have fun.

Nomads. Are you angry. Nomads. Are you hungry. Nomads. This is it. Regionals. “The Big One”. “The One That Might Get Away But We Sure Hope It Doesn’t”.

Virginia Tech, and you already know we beat them. Sure it was a close one but we have that confidence from earlier this year, should be easy money.

As I sit here and write this article with a teammate on my right, my mind wanders off into the dreary day in Boonetown. The Nomads are traveling to Axton, Virginia this weekend, or as some might call it, “home of the ORIGINAL Coney Island Hot Dog”. It’s about 3 hours north of Boone so we plan on hitting the road Friday and riding I-95 until we hit the 5 star hotel. Continental breakfast and complimentary wifi, shoutout Timmy for the clutch pickup on the hotel end.

There are four spots this year to go to Nationals which is something the Nomads have never done. But if we are going to do it, this is that year. Sure we’ve had some adversity, but what’s a season without a little adversity. I think this is the last article of the year and I must apologize to my teammates for not getting the maximum budget points from these articles, but just know that we will next year. Thank you to everyone at UREC who has helped with us this year. Thank you to our captains Otto and Matty, two guys who have both sacrificed so much this year for the betterment of the team. And one MASSIVE shoutout to all the seniors this year, it has been an honor to play with you boys and we hope you will return to play for the alumni team. Thank you and good night <3

The pools have been set for the weekend and we play Virginia Tech, William and Mary, and Delaware. Then the fourth game on Saturday will be a crossover play and who we play depends on how we place in our pool after those first three games. We haven’t seen William and Mary or Delaware yet, but you better believe we have been watching their film any chance we get. Walking to class in the rain, were watching. About to go to sleep but decide to play some Fortnite, film is going on the phone while we play. Sleeping, dreaming about the film we are going to watch. But we have played

As we are quickly approaching the end of April and the end of another school year, the Woman’s Ultimate Frisbee team has completed another exciting spring season. Finishing out our last tournament this weekend in Winston-Salem, the Nonads held their ground and pulled out a 3-4 record at the end of their Sectionals tournament. Although this record may not seem like a lot, our team fought hard against competitive teams like UNC Wilmington, Duke, and NC State   Unfortunately, the Nonads will be saying goodbye to 4 key Seniors going into our next season. Sarah-Cabot Morris (president), Meredith

Abercrombie (treasurer), Taylor Bonds, and Mary Ann Savage will all be graduating in May and we will miss them dearly but we know they are ready to spread their wings and fly into the real world! Having played for their entire collage career, Morris, Abercrombie, and Bonds have put a countless number of hours into the Nonads and have allowed our team to flourish into what it is today. Although Mary Ann Savage only played with us for 1 year due to her commitment to Club Soccer, she added so much to the team in just 2 short semesters of play.   Although we will miss our seniors both on and off the field, we are already looking forward and preparing for our upcoming season this fall. Former Vice President Jessie Hollis will be filling the role of President in the fall and rising senior Ashley Funderud will

be joining her along the way as our teams new Vice President. Club Sports Rep Sarah Rivers will be renewing her officer position into our next season and Kati Robinson will be taking charge of the teams social media pages. On top of the veteran officers, we have two new faces that will be giving back to the team. Rising sophomores Bri Hibner and Abby Dunn will be the teams Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.   We are so eager to start another chapter of Ultimate next semester and can’t wait to train all summer long so we can be the best Nonads we can be!

Out with the Old, in with the New By: Emma Bouma  |  Executive Officer Executive Corner

The old executives are heading out, but before we do we are very excite to announce the New 2018-2019 Executive Officers.   Sam Ingles is a rising senior majoring in Business Advertising. Originally form Winston-Salem, NC, Sam started playing Men’s Lacrosse with the club sports program his freshman year. His favorite thing about his team is the comradery and the friendships that he has made while playing. Ingles is #42 on the field, but plans to be #1 in the office. He hopes to gain work experience as well as a solid grasp on what it takes to run an organization such as club sports.   Claire Biaggi is a rising junior majoring in Public Relations with a minor in French. Biaggi is from Greensboro, NC, but was

more than happy to come up to school in the mountains where she could join the Alpine Ski Club. One of her favorite memories was sledding on a golf course at 2 AM.A lover of French fries and the color blue, Biaggi wanted this position to learn more about how club sports works and how to help teams get more money.

being an executive officer will give him some work experience and wants to know the ins and outs of the system. Liles enjoys some tacos from Dos Amigos and his favorite memory with his club is winning the NC State Club Classic last year.

Ivy Wagner is a rising senior with an impressive double major in Economics and Finance and Banking. Ivy loves Equestrian because it allows her to continue doing something that she loves that she did not think she would be able to participate in through school. It’s also a great way to a step back from campus and stressors from class and assignments during the week. If she did not do Equestrian, Ivy would join the Women’s Volleyball club.

Patrick Arsena did both Fencing and Men’s Ultimate until recently. This rising junior is majoring in Computer Science. As an executive officer he is looking to apply and further develop his leadership abilities. Arsena loves mac n’ cheese and the color orange. His favorite memory with his team is traveling to Nashville and exploring the city after their tournament.

Greg Liles is currently president of the Men’s Soccer club. As a rising senior with a degree in Rec Management with minors in sports science and coaching, Greg thinks
