Archery
Alan Pelletier | Vice President When looking around the club expo, I got a glimpse of the archery table. This amazed me, “archery at a University?” that’s unique. In the past I did shoot a bow with my father, but over the years it faded out. I signed up, went to the meeting and found all of these people who always had a good time out in that field, shooting their bows. As a freshman, I wanted to do everything I could to be apart of that. First year at a University, students are away from their families, so they try so hard finding friends and people they like to be around, but even if you like to be around them, it does not mean they
have the same interest. Why try hard, don’t try, just figure out something that you are naturally fond of or interested in and I can almost guarantee there is a club on campus for it. Clubs have a natural sense of community, everyone has the same interest. Club Sports specifically have had time to develop and expand into a unique group of people that can easily match what you are looking for. Archery was it for me, after meeting a few people, I bought a bow and practiced every chance I could to work on developing the skill of archery. The Archery team is
a wonderful place to start, I would say most of the team had no idea how to shoot a bow before joining the team, but they fell in love with it. It is not a normal sport, anyone can do it. Being an executive board member, we do all we can to help provide club equipment and transportation to practice and competitions. This always gives people a boost, they can try it without investing in anything. It’s always a great time, even when you are just watching others shoot, encouragement is always appreciated. WHAT’S YOUR CLUB?

First Tourn
& First Ba Women’s Basketball
Rosemary Mosher | Secretary Our first tournament was from September 30th to October 1st at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tournaments are always something to look forward to throughout the semester especially while sitting in class or studying for an exam. Friday night we arrived in Chapel Hill and went to the notorious Franklin Street and walked around and found somewhere to eat dinner. For some of our team mates this was their first time being in Chapel Hill. Saturday morning, we had a game at 9am against High Point. It was a hard fought and physical game that came down to the final seconds. However, we did not come out on top we were able to find some positives
6
in our effort. This was the first time we had actually played as a team and for some put on the Appalachian State jersey. Our next game was against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. From the beginning we knew this was going to be a tough game. They looked much taller, stronger and more unified than we did. Despite all of those things we stepped into the ring. This was another physical back and forth game that once again came down to the final seconds. Going into our final game of the day against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill we were tired and beaten. This then showed in our game.

In the second half our coach Jesse Franks put in our secret weapon, Sayoko Naka. Sayoko is an exchange student from Japan who has never played basketball in her life. She has the heart and the drive to work her hardest at all times. One of our teammates passed her the ball on our side of the court with 5 seconds left and she scored! Once the buzzer sounded we all rushed the court to congratulate her. However, our record for the tournament was not what we had hoped. That was the least of everyone’s worries because we were able to be a part of Sayoko’s first points. That was our story book ending to our first tournament and we are hoping for so many more.

Equestrian
Olivia Moran | Vice President The equestrian team is in full swing as the fall season rolls in. At both Foothills and Mimosa Hills Farms, our riders have been training hard every week to better their skills and to prepare for competitions. There is nothing like the smell of a barn at 7 am on competition days! The western team is working hard to prepare for their upcoming show on November 5th at St. Andrews University. The hunt seat competing team has had competitions every weekend since September 30th so far. This past weekend, the hunt seat competing team spent their fall break competing at the beautiful Virginia Tech and gave a great performance. We are very proud of our secretary, Chloe Schaefer, who got 1st
place in her Walk, Trot, Canter class! The team has visited Averett University, Wake Forest University, Virginia Tech and are preparing for the upcoming show this weekend, October 21st and 22nd at High Point University. This special two-day show will be a lot of work but also a lot of fun. The team plans to bring 4 of their coach’s, Dana Dewey, horses from Foothills Equestrian Center to the High Point Show. The team is very excited to show off the horses they train on to the other teams, they are always a good draw! Additionally, our dressage team is small but mighty and have named themselves “warriors in white pants”. They are excited to go to their second show on November 4th at Emory and Henry College. The team had some fun at the heavenly Broyhill Equestrian Preserve in Blowing Rock. The Preserve generously let us use their barn to host a team potluck and pictures. It is always nice to get the whole team together since we spend so much time apart at different barns on different days of the week. We are very fortunate to have a connection with this wonderful facility. They are endlessly supportive of us and are very generous to let us use their property for our annual open-to-public horse show that we host in the Spring. We had a great time relaxing and eating in the elegant barn last Sunday. It is always great to hang out and play after training hard every week. Issue No. 88 // Club Sports Illustrated

Pink Socks and Hot Dogs Fencing
Lauren Brackett | Secretary These past few months have been action-packed for our team, and this past weekend was no exception! Many of our members traveled to Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend to compete at Georgia Tech. The tournament was the annual fall Southern Intercollegiate Fencing Association (SIFA) competition, which is held every October and draws squads from universities across the South. Our members competed against teams from universities such as Emory University, East Carolina University, the University of Florida and the University of Georgia. Suryaveer Singh, our Vice President and senior sabrist, competed on a composite epee squad with two women from Georgia Tech and the University of Florida. Together, they won every pool bout except one against the University of Florida. In semifinals, his composite team faced the App State men’s epee 10
squad, which Suryaveer noted was “honestly one of the most exciting matches at SIFA.” Congratulations to one of our new foilists, James Khuns, who competed on a University of Florida and Emory composite team, on his gold medal in mixed foil. Other tournament highlights included a trip to the famous Varsity restaurant downtown, in addition to Sean and Devin’s matching pink socks. Our Treasurer and junior sabrist Patrick Arsena noted that he “was really impressed with how well everyone fenced, especially the new members.” The competition was tough and plentiful, but as always, we’re so proud of all our fencers who made the trip down to Georgia! We’re looking forward to some time off during fall break but are excited at the possibility of fencing at NC State the following weekend. Like our Facebook page, @Appalachian State Fencing, for more pictures and updates!

Men’s Lacrosse
David Hayes | Vice President The Appalachian State Mountaineers will be facing off against The University of North Carolina 49ers October 22nd at Appalachian State. His will be a true test of strength for the Mountaineers for their fall scrimmage season. The beginning of the fall season has been exciting, it is great to see these new players stepping up into leadership roles and true characters for this team. In the Spring
2017 season, Appalachian State lost their only game of the season to Charlotte to finish with a 7-1 record, also losing the Northwest Division Champion title. Although the Mountaineers prioritize the fall season to get new players on the field, they plan 100% to take the game and walk away with a victory. In other news, President Jack Rich and Vice President
David Hayes have been busy in the community. These two players have been coaching a Watauga County Youth Lacrosse Clinic for 4th – 8th grade boys. This clinic is a great opportunity to teach our youth the fundamentals of lacrosse. Appalachian State Lacrosse is very happy to have the opportunity to give back to the community and to the growth of the sport.

Women’s Rugby
Allyson Kern | Club Sports Representative These past few weeks the AHO women have been without a rugby match but have kept busy preparing for the many matches to come this semester. This past weekend was full of time well spent with alumni. The alumni game was unfortunately rained out this year. However, the team still had a great weekend getting to know the alumni. New players had the privilege of spending quality time with the alumni and gained a little more insight on the rugby world from hearing about the alums
experiences. The alumni were treated to a drag show with performances by current AHO players and all were thoroughly impressed. Despite not having a match with the alum, it was a memorable weekend for present and past AHO women. After taking a break from rugby matches for little bit, these ruggers are eager to be back on the pitch this Saturday. The team has been hard at work preparing for their second matrix game of the season
at Coastal Carolina. Along with a matrix match against Coastal, an AHO B side team will have a social match with the College of Charleston. The team is excitedly awaiting the round robin this weekend. Experienced players will have the chance to dominate the pitch and show coastal who AHO is. New players will have the opportunity to improve their rugby skills and continue to discover why rugby is the most glorious and rewarding sport they will ever play.

SNOWBOARDING
Stephanie Shapiro | Vice President The team is excited for the upcoming season and the cold weather creeping in. We have been enjoying the warm weather by cruising on the greenway and having team get togethers. Monster Energy has just sent over the team gear. We received shirts, liners, hoodies, beanies, and even two big banners. We are very grateful and look forward to repping Monster
on the East coast. We are also having our team night out at Recess next week and will get a chance to get discounts on new 2018 gear. We are slowly planning for our shirts and hoodies/ outershell jackets. We are planning on getting some local sponsors to help with the expenses. We have also received a rough schedule for the season. We will have a couple home races at Sugar
and Beech. We will travel up to VA for Bryce and a few others such as Liberty. Regionals will be held at WinterGreen and we are excited to have it so close to travel to. Nationals will be up North in New York. It will be a fun road trip to look forward to. Until then we will continue to prepare for the season and get everything in line to make the season run as smooth as possible.

swim
Austin Lyndhurst | Secretary Recently the App State Swimming & Schooling Mountaineers held their 24th annual High Country Invitational swim meet at the SRC pool on the weekend of September 30th. Our team welcomed ten other U.S. Masters College Club teams to make the trek to the Blue Ridge mountains for a rigorous, five-hour long competition. In the end, our women’s team placed 3rd overall and our men’s team placed 4th! The rest of the meet results will be posted and can be accessed on our team website later this week. Our swimmers would like to thank App State Aquatics, App State UREC, the Club Sports Program, our team’s six alumni swimmers that returned, and the visiting teams for making this event so successful and fun. We would not have had the outcome we wanted for this home pool party without the support from our faculty advisor, and meet official, Richard Miller; our Director of Aquatics, Cheryl Eddins; App State Director of Health Promotions, Sherri Wilson, for her generous equipment donation; our 18
dedicated timers, our fantastic student lifeguards, and other helpful volunteer personnel who devoted their time and energy. Our warmest regards and gratitude is given to the former UREC Coordinator of Sports & Activities, Chris Carr. Chris has been a vital part in our team’s success these past several years and we wish him the best in his new endeavors in Virginia! He will truly be missed in the Club Sports community here at Appalachian State. As we continue to swim faster and forward, between our lanes, the team plans on heading to University of Tennessee Knoxville to compete this upcoming weekend of October 21st. Teams in attendance at the 2017 Vols’ Swim Club Invitational meet include University of Alabama, Emory, Clemson, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, and several other regional schools. If any Mountaineers happen to be in the Knoxville area on Saturday, come stop by the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center on UTK’s campus to cheer us

on around 1:15! This meet has 29 events and will most likely end in the the early evening. Besides competing, our team celebrates our school spirit, community pride, and the camaraderie that we have built since our founding in 1994. During homecoming last week, our team got into the spirit of the giving Appalachian State community. This year the team supported the Appalachian Student Ambassadors in their rather exciting Nearly Naked Mile event at Duck Pond Field, which helped donate over 700 articles of clothing to The Hospitality House! Later that weekend, we had a team barbeque and tailgate at our President Olivia Bear’s home where we walked down the hill as a team to Kidd Brewer to cheer on our football team to their 45-31 victory over New Mexico State! We hope everyone here at App had a fun and memorable Homecoming week as much as we had. Today – and every day – we continue to give our all to Appalachian State.

Men’s ultimate
Myles Grady | Secretary The Nomads traveled abroad this past weekend to Raleigh for the annual tournament “Brickyard Brawl”. That ish was popping. We took two teams to this tournament, an A and a B. A team came out hard and fast against a Duke team that couldn’t even touch us in a geology bee on any given day. O Captain My Captain Otto Solberg had a big layout D to really get the game going and we rode that energy out the entire game. Second game for A was against a split UNC Chapel Hill squad. That game was dope. Ultra competitive and tons of skies. We unfortunately lost this 12-14 but if you take out a couple lazy turnovers we win that game easier than you could say Sir David Attenborough. We had our bye in between our first two games and last two so
in this time we went to support the B team. They were battling a split UNCW team. Watching these mostly rookie lines go out and hold their own against a national level team is awesome to see and just shows how much our boys have learned in their month and a half of playing. Huge shoutout to the vets who were willing to play with the young boys on the B team and steering them in the right direction. A team came back from the bye against a NC State split team and won it handily, 13-9. Our final game on Saturday was against the USC B team. Easy W 13-2. Shoutout to Olive Garden. They really understand the concept of eat food until you feel uncomfortable. I ate so much salad and breadsticks, fantastic
restaurant. Sunday came and went like a ton of bricks, no renovation. A squad took down ECU in a fiery matchup. Then in the quarterfinals we lost to the other Chapel Hill team. Not even mad about it, just disappointed. Then we beat a lackluster Clemson team and finally blew a Warriors size lead to the other NC State split team to leave the tournament with a sour taste in our mouths. Overall this weekend was super fun and engaging. Guys were being dudes and bros could just be fellas. It was one of those weekends. No school but a good amount of learning. Can’t wait to play again.

Volleyball Men’s Volleyball
Tyler Cajigas | Secretary Over the weekend, the Men’s Club Volleyball team traveled to Wilmington, NC to play a tournament that included teams like NC State, UNC, UNCW, and ECU. We took the fall break to go down there on Thursday and enjoy the beach and the weather. On Friday night, we all had dinner at one of our teammate’s mom’s house, which was nice because everyone knows you don’t get home cooked meals in college very often. On Saturday, we competed in the tournament and made it to the Quarter finals of it. Saturday night we had a team dinner at Outback Steakhouse and enjoyed the rest of our night. The men’s team will be having a home tournament on October 28th, everyone come out and watch! 22

Courtney Forbis | Officer
It has been a busy time of the year for the Executives! The week of Fall Break, the Executives began meeting with their teams to go over mid semester budget points and tier systems placements. These meetings were helpful to both the executive and the team officers as a way for each party to touch base and see how the semester is going. The Executive Board would like to thank each and every team and officers for helping make these meeting run smoothly and being prepared with the all necessary paperwork for each meeting! At the end of the semester there will be another set of budget point
and tier system meeting as a chance to turn in all paperwork and receipts for the semester. If your team is traveling a lot and the receipts and other paperwork it getting difficult to keep track of, feel free to bring to your executive and we can keep track of it for you and your team. The committees were not able to meet during the council meeting on October 18th because of other business that needed to be taken care of. However, the committees are still hard at work and making progress on their respective ideas. The community service
committee is planning a dodge ball tournament to raise money for local charities in Boone. They are still working on the date of the events, but it will be $30 for a team of 6-8 people. All proceeds will go to the Humane Society. This tournament is a great opportunity for teams to bond and also to get to know other athletes in other sports! As the semesters continues to move closer and closer to the end, please keep reaching out to your executive officer if you have any questions! Every team has done amazing in competitions so far this semester so lets keep it up. Go Mountaineers!!
