Team updates e s Despite the recent weather conditions, the Cycling Team has continued to train hard in preparation for the quickly approaching road season. The first races begin this weekend, February 9th and 10th at NC State University. The team hopes to start out the season with a successful weekend, and wishes good luck to the Appalachian State Club Sports that have already begun their spring competitions, and those who will begin soon.

Triathlon Team is out and about getting the season started. We had a spaghetti team dinner last weekend. Carb loading is essential this semester as we prepare for our main race. Belews Lake Triathlon on April 30th will be our biggest team race of the semester. This is an Olympic Distance Triathlon with a 1500-meter swim, 27-mile bike, and 10K run. We are excited to head out to Greensboro and spread ASU’s name at this event. Practices are starting up next week and we look forward to everything to come this semester! We’ll keep you updated!

The Equestrian Team is back in full swing for the Spring Semester! We have started lessons and have two competitions this weekend. We have been experiencing a little difficulty getting off the mountain with all of this winter weather causing our lessons to be rescheduled. Luckily the barn we ride at has much more mild weather than Boone! We are hosting another IDA show this weekend and are hoping a little "home court advantage" will give us some good momentum at the beginning of the season! The show starts at 10:00am on Sunday. The Western Team will be competing on Saturday and Sunday as well. Hunt Seat has their first show the following weekend at Virginia Intermont. Katelyn Young, President

“This semester sees a great new era emerge for the App State Racquetball Club. With a trio of new officers, our goals are within our grasp.” One of our goals is to participate in two tournaments: one home tournament and one away tournament. There are several campuses we might be traveling to, including but not limited to Liberty, NC State, and Chapel Hill. We are also working on getting a sponsorship from the local Hilltop Drive-In restaurant. A lot of our players love eating at this classic burger place and we would recommend it
to anyone who likes good food and music. It’s been great seeing so many enthusiastic new players coming out this semester and taking interest in joining the team. Our new officers have jumped into action rewriting the team constitution and making other reforms. Our practices are at the Quinn and the days vary but usually we practice on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6-8. Anyone who is interested is
welcome and no experience is required. Dues are some of the lowest in club sports at 25 dollars; however, they are due next Tuesday. Do not hesitate on this great opportunity and we will see you on the court. Jordan Devere, Officer

Swim Team has had a busy and exciting start to the spring semester. We have multiple new members that began swimming with us this semester and they are very excited about being a part of the team. The first few weeks of practice have been geared towards getting used to being back in the pool after taking a month off as well as preparing for our first meet. This past weekend, we competed at the University of Georgia against Clemson, Georgia Tech, UGA, and Presbyterian College. We had a few members who had never traveled with us before and they really enjoyed themselves and the close team atmosphere we have. We are now preparing for our home meet which is taking place February 23rd, and we have teams from all over the state and other states coming to compete against us. Haley Lingle, Officer
Practices for the Women’s Club Basketballteam have been underway for a few weeks now and they are off to a great start! We have one new freshman face to add to the team this semester and we are all working together to incorporate everyone into our plays and rotations. Our first tournament of the semester at Georgia Southern is right around the corner on February 22nd, so we are hard at work. This tournament is very important for us because it is our regional tournament and performing well in it can help us out later on in the season. We are also working on having a few fundraising events to help us get to our tournaments, so if everyone would keep an eye out for those that would be great! Casey Tarwater, Secretary

Fencing Team is a week
away from our home tournament. This will be the fifth annual Massacre on the Mountain, which we've hosted every spring for the last several years. On Saturday the 16th will be our foil tournaments, followed by epee tournaments on Sunday. Our fencers are training hard in preparation to compete against the arriving fencers from Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte, Wilmington, and elsewhere. And after Massacre on the Mountain, ASU's fencers will only have one weekend of rest before it's off to Greensboro to compete in Divisionals. Meanwhile, our new fencers who started in January are making remarkable progress. They have begun participating in bouts. They have demonstrated that they have learned enough of the basics to handle themselves on the strip.
With the help of the experienced fencers, the new fencers are getting critical training in footwork, bladework, lunging, and parrying within the context of real bouts. All of them are taking to it surprisingly well. One exceptionally eager newcomer has even decided to take part in Massacre on the Mountain. Most of the new fencers, as they have only been fencing for about two weeks, will attend in order to observe how tournaments work and to learn from the bouts of a variety of fencers. With Massacre on the Mountain and Divisionals getting closer and closer, Fencing Team is in high gear to train and prepare. But with the way we're anticipating it, the tournaments can't get here quick enough!

With two successful races under our belts, the
Snowboard Team was
more than excited to be heading to our first away race of the season this past weekend. Bryce Resort in Virginia was a not so exciting five-hour drive from App, but we knew it would be worth it. Going to bed late and waking up early is a trend that the team always seems to have, and we definitely didn’t break it in Virginia. Although we were all tired, all of us could not shake the excitement that was built up for Saturday and Sunday. With our steezy new team jackets in tow, we showed up to the mountain ready to shred. After a bit of a warm period back home in Boone, it was exciting to see the snow falling for the majority of the day on Saturday. With snowy skies and awesome conditions, the boys finished in womping first place with Taylor Bridges, Drew Cook, and Alex Martin bringing in points for the team. Although the conditions were on point, the girls team unfortunately fell short of their expectations by bringing in a fourth place finish over all. Heather Stewart, Sarah Beeken, and Megan Page took the top three spots for the team, resulting in the fourth place finish after JMU, UVA, and Duke. With the guys pumped to defend their first place title, and the girls ready to redeem themselves, everyone woke up ready to go on Sunday morning. With sunny skies and smiling faces, everyone was just as ready to hit the slopes on Sunday as they were on Saturday. Everyone scoped out the course and became more anxious as the morning went on. The girls were not going to let Saturday’s results affect Sundays performance in any way but positively.
After solid performances by all of Apps men and women racers, along with a one-of-a-kind bikini run by the one and only Shannon Hildebrandt, the boys managed to bring in a first place finish once again while the girls improved their standing with second place finish. Taylor Bridges, Drew Cook, and Alex Martin all demolished the course for the second day in a row, and Heather Stewart, Sarah Beeken, and Shannon Hildebrandt managed to bring in enough points to improve two spots over all. As a team, we realize that not everything or every race is going to go as planned, but as long as we are hanging out together and having a good time, nothing can bring us down. Shannon Hildebrandt states, “from bikini runs to sleeping four people per bed we have the most wild and amazing team ever!” The Snowboard Team had a ton of fun at Bryce last weekend and everyone did so well! We can't wait to see how the rest of the season turns out and to shred some gnar at nationals! Everyone on the team can admit that our group as a whole is definitely one of a kind, but none of us would have it any other way. Megan Page, Member

CLUB SPORTS NIGHT
Photos taken by Madison Frink
Our two Club Sports Nights this school year were a grand success. We had a great turnout for both nights, December 3rd, 2012 and January 24th, 2013, altogether we had about 200 students from various teams make their way to the stands to cheer on the Mountaineers in the name of Club Sports! The evenings were very exciting, much thanks to the men and women players of Mountaineers, who won both games, but also heightened by some on court shootouts, Pepsi promotions, and the infamous rubber chicken toss all comprised of our own Club Sports players. During the 2nd half of each game the Club Sports Executives, Publicity Programmer, and Director determined and announced the winners of our 5 competitions.

Executive’s Corner
a word from our executives...
The Executives have all been working diligently on individual projects and events coming up. Council this week was exciting and productive as we recapped our discussion of the Senate from our previous council meeting, and deciding our stance regarding the senate restructure bill. The Council was also updated on on the progress of several events and projects. The marketing and advertisement committee will be leading the charge in the search for a new Club Sports logo. The logo competition will be taking place over the semester, and will be open to the entire campus for entries. The fundraising committee has teamed up with the executives who have met with a representative from SGA regarding hosting a joint 5k. This is an exciting in many different ways, we not only raise money for us and for a charitable cause, but we also can use this time to strengthen our relationship with SGA.
Madi, our publicity programmer updated us on the upcoming yearly photo contest for teams to begin thinking of photos to submit. All of the committees have exciting and important projects they are working on such as service committee working on a clothes drive, unity committee a dodgeball tournament, budget points looking to restructure the national reimbursement information, fundraising are working on a potential comeback shack night and 5k, and the marketing and advertisement committee are organizing the logo competition and t-shirts to be returned soon. The executives are in the office working on individual projects for the semester including symposium, banquet, and budge proposal for the semester. It is sure to be a busy, productive, and exciting semester ahead. Good look to everyone in their spring seasons! Morgan Page, CS Executive
