A Rough Start, a Big Upset, and a Fun Social The Nomads Men’s Ultimate college season got off to a rocky start this spring in Charlotte at the Queen City Tune-Up. The tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina Darkside, featured several college teams ranked in the top 25 nationwide. Appalachian State is ranked somewhere in the 100s, and was seeded last out of 19 in this tournament. Saturday saw a lot of healthy competition from the Nomads, but it did not prove to be enough to win any of their four games. They abandoned the fields that day with their heads hung low in the setting Charlotte sun. Sundays first game was against the Michigan Magnum. And there must have been a fire on the mountain on Sunday, because the Nomads burned em, scoring four of the last five points to upset Michigan 13-12. How appropriate.
It is easily the win of the season so far, and arguably the sweetest victory in the history of App State Mens Ultimate. This past weekend proved to be a much better showing for the Nomads. They traveled to beautiful Charleston, South Carolina as the defending champions of the infamous Chucktown Throwdown. They represented ASU well, winning three of four games on Saturday, two of three games on Sunday, and two of two socials on Saturday night to finish 5th overall in the tournament. The Nomads are still looking to turn things up a notch this season. They have a few more highly competitive tournaments until sectionals roll around, and they will certainly need to use those as preparation. Jeff Colby, Team Member

Over the past two weekends the Equestrian Team has been on fire in the arena. We've accomplished so much and I could not be more proud of my team! As I'm sure many other Club Sports teams do, we compete against schools where riding is a Varsity sport and there are riders on scholarship for their talents. Not to mention their riding arenas are on campus and in walking distance or at least a stop on the bus route as opposed to our hour drive down the mountain. I think it says a lot about our teammates and our coaches to even be competitive with these teams and it's exciting to not just have beautiful riders but riders with respectable horsemanship skills as well. The weekend of February 9th both the Western and the Dressage Team competed. Kelly Patterson qualified for Regionals and Katherine Uva won her class for the Western Team. The Dressage Team had its best overall team finish coming in Second Place behind Virginia Tech. Katelyn Young won the First Level Division and Reserve High Point Champion, Halie Cunningham won the Upper Training Division and Leah Petrowski came in Second Place in the Intro Division. We also won three out of the four of the Dressage Seat Equitation classes with four riders qualified for DSE finals and not to mention we have three or four riders in contention for nationals in April!
The Hunt Seat Team had a big weekend this past weekend finishing 3rd overall for team placings and having some fantastic individual finishes! Haley McCune earned First and Third Place tying for Reserve High Point Champion, Kristin Clark also earned a first place, Mallery Patterson and Ali Ranson earned second places in their classes and we had three or four riders qualify for Regionals at one show! Morgan Erlenbach is currently standing in Fourth Place for the Cacchione Cup and we are excited to see where the next few shows will lead! The Dressage Team is preparing to compete at Virginia Intermont this weekend and the Western Team will be headed to St. Andrew's where they will have a show on Friday and Regionals on Saturday. Good luck to all of our riders! Photos submitted by Equestrian Team

App State Women’s Club Soccer
The ASU Women’s Club Soccer Team is a very dedicated and competitive group of individuals that all share one common trait—an unrelenting love for the game. We pride ourselves in the uniqueness of not only our individual skills, but also our individual personalities. Each player is able to bring a key component needed to make the entire team function as a dynamic whole. Some of our players bring more to the table than meets the eye. In fact, two of our players are not only twins but also two incredibly skilled athletes that always exude positivity and great attitudes both on and off the field. Needless to say, this team would not be the same without them. Meet Brooke and Britt Leadbetter… What is your full name? Brooke: Brooke Margaret Leadbetter Brittany: Brittany Leight Leadbetter When is your birthday? Who’s older? Brooke: December 10th, 1991, Moi, by one big minute! Brittany: December 10th, 1991 (Brooke is older by a minute) What is your major? Brooke: Recreation Management Major Brittany: Elementary Education Major How long have you played soccer? Brooke: 15 years, yes I was on the sideline cheering for my sister at the start, let's be real I did it for the fun, twirly skirt, but found my calling on the field with her a year later. Never looked at that skirt again. Brittany: I have been playing soccer for about 16 years (first team was a coed team in Michigan...Brooke was the designated “cheerleader” for the team, she got an award haha) What is your position(s)? Brooke:We are opposites, I'm up top, forward, midfield. Brittany: I’ve played defense basically my whole life (center, and left, and sometimes midfield)
What is your favorite memory or favorite part of the team? Brooke: OUR TEAM IS THE BEST! I love that we are all there because we share the same love for the beautiful game of soccer, but it’s the people that make me want to go out and play even more. They are awesome! One of my favorite parts of our team is that every other team underestimates us Boonies, but then we show up and kill it, while the other team is looking blankly trying to figure out why they even doubted us in the first place, and we walk away with another win. Brittany: I really love all the people on the team and the personalities that make up the team. It’s just a great time, and a really awesome way to just unwind after school all day. One of my favorite memories would probably be when we played Wake Forest, they had basically two teams and we barely had 11, and they were warming up doing synchronized skipping and junk and we killed them, it was awesome!!
What is your favorite pump up song? Brooke: Is there ever just one? But I do like a good Bohemian Rhapsody jam out session to get me ready. Brittany: It changes each game, but last week it was a song from Beyonce. What is your favorite movie? Brooke: Ferris Bueller's Day Off Brittany: Beauty and the Beast (Disney) What is your favorite food? Brooke: Pot Roast, like Grandmas pot roast, slow cooked to perfection. Brittany: Strawberries! Chicken Parmigiana! What is your favorite ice cream flavor? Brooke: Mint chocolate chip and cookies and cream-yet now I'm obsessed with Marble Slab's cinnamon, add graham cracker, oreo, and two things of cookie dough, not one has to be two= LOVE. Brittany: Reese’s Chocolate Ice Cream and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
a creek. Brooke did it, my friend did it, but I wasn’t too sure it was safe. So Brooke swung again to prove it was “safe” and the rope snapped and she fell into the creek (which was only about 4 inches of water) just like a cartoon character. And then proceeded to change clothes in a shed, so my friend’s dad wouldn’t find out. It was so funny! What’s your scariest twin moment? Brooke: The scariest twin moment I've had was when we were playing in a soccer game and Britt got hit and was unconscious. I've never been so terrified. Brittany: The scariest moment I’ve had with my twin was actually pretty funny once I knew she was okay. I watched her flip over her handlebars on a bike, complete 360 in the air) land and slump on the ground with the bike landing on top of her. My first reaction though was getting off my bike and running home to get my parents.
Tell us something about your twin... ANYTHING! Give us one interesting fact about Brooke: The best thing about being a twin yourself! with Britt is the twin telepathy we share. Brooke: I've been horseback riding since I We disappear into our own little twin world, was 6, my ultimate dream would be to travel where long conversations, inside jokes, and the world on horseback. thoughts are shared and understood through Brittany:I got my first unicycle in 5th grade :) a single look at each other. Britt is my partner in crime. I could not imagine my life without What’s your funniest twin moment? her. So many times I feel bad that she is Brooke: There isn't just one moment, because stuck with me, I don't think I could handle our life is a huge comedy, but to say it in being stuck with me this long, yet somehow a nice way Britt is slightly clumsy. I swear she does it, and no one but her could do she was born with two left feet. It can be a it. She is an amazing person, an incredible hill, stairs, a soccer field, an escalator, ice, soccer player, an artistic soul at times, she cement sidewalk, a trampoline, any type will do incredible things in this world, and I'm of surface, she will find a way to fall, she fortunate and blessed to know that I will be would find a way to fall in space. One time able to watch her pursue her dreams. during a soccer game, I looked back and saw Brittany: I LOVE YA SO MUCH!! And if I had Britt, walking backwards to the goal, and to get stuck with someone in this life, I thank next thing I know she is on the ground. She God He put me with you! You’re the best twin fell. But then continued to fall backwards 3 a twin could ask for, it’s been so much fun up more times during that one soccer game. until now, and I can only imagine how much How she does it, no clue. I am in awe of her more fun we are going to have :)!!! tripping abilities. It's slightly worrisome, but nonetheless amazing, free, entertainment for me. This past weekend, Fencing Club hosted our Massacre on the Mountain tournament. Despite the snowy conditions, fencers arrived from around the state. The two dozen competing fencers included groups from Davidson College, Greensboro, and Charlotte. The tournament was split into two days, divided by weapon type. Foil events were held on Saturday, with Epee events following on Sunday. Two events were held for each weapon type. In fencing, Open events are open to all fencers of any rank, while the E and Under events are limited to those ranked E or without ratings. The competition was fierce, but members of App State's Fencing Club medaled in all four events. Our Vice President and Treasurer took bronze in the Open Epee and Foil events respectively, while our Secretary took bronze in the E and Under events for Epee and Foil. Many members of the club who were not competing came out to support their team. All in all, Massacre on the Mountain was a great success! Next weekend, most of the club will be traveling to UNC Greensboro for Divisionals. At Divisionals, NC's biggest fencing event of the year, fencers from all over North Carolina will be competing to qualify for Nationals. All the dedicated fencers in the state will be there to find out just how good they are and to try and prove they are one of the state's top fencers and potentially move on to compete in Nationals. We're hard at work training for this tournament, and all of us are determined to do even better at Divisionals than we did at Massacre on the Mountain! Bennett Hatfield, Secretary

The Appalachian State Women’s Lacrosse Team has started their semester off on a good note. Although their practice conditions have not been ideal, the team has made the best of their time, working out indoors and going over plays and defensive strategies. There was even snow on the fields to welcome the girls to their first outdoor practice. Despite the girls’ lack of outdoor practices, they are excited about their upcoming spring season. The team gained at least 10 new girls this semester and they have been working hard to work together to improve the new dynamic. They attended Club Sports Night together and have team “buddies” to encourage each other on and off the field. The team traveled to High Point University last Sunday, hoping for the best after having only four outdoor practices previously. High Point proved to be tough competition, but App State played on their level and had a lot of great moments on the field. Girls from the previous season helped lead the team while new girls proved to be a great addition to the already talented group. App State didn’t walk away with the win, but still consider their first game a success. This week at practice, the girls have been focusing on plays and defense to prepare for their upcoming game at Duke University, where they will play Duke and UNC-Wilmington. Their game is this Sunday, and with chilly outdoor practices all week, they are prepared to give it all they’ve got for their first Conference games. Anna Norwood, Vice President
13 This weekend the Women’s Club Basketball Team will be traveling to our first tournament of the new semester at Georgia Southern! We’ll be making the six hour trek for our first game on Friday night. We are going to be facing some really good competition from all around the region. We have been working extremely hard all year and all of the effort we’ve been putting in is going to really pay off. It is ultimately our goal to walk away from this tournament with the championship because a win at this regional tournament would give us a free ride to nationals! We also are going to be hosting another home tournament here on campus the first weekend of March. We are really excited and would love it if everyone would try to stop by and see a game! After many weeks of the Snowboard Team racing and poppin tags at multiple thrift stores in search for the perfect race attire, Snowshoe weekend was finally here. Although each race is a new experience and definitely more exciting the next, it was pretty obvious that everyone was super stoked for heading to Snowshoe Resort in West Virginia this past weekend. With some crazy outfits in our bags we were ready to shred and to show the Dirty South how App State rides for the last conference race of the season. We arrived in Snowshoe after a long but entertaining sixhour drive through a blizzard, some crazy wind, and no cell phone service. Although it was stressful at times, once the team arrived at the house, we were beside ourselves with excitement and ready to get the weekend started. On Saturday we woke everyone up as fast as possible and headed out to the slopes. As everyone strapped on their boards no one could keep a smile off of their face. After some icey conditions back at home, everyone was pretty pumped to actually have a few good inches of fresh East Coast Powder beneath their boards. Our boarders headed over to the racecourse to check it out and as the day went on, the excitement built, and everyone was ready to rip the course. After a few hours of riding, everyone was feeling good and prepared for the race. As the afternoon rolled around, it was finally the snowboarders turn to ride the course, and everyone was more than ready.
With more racers than any other race so far, everyone waited at the top of the run with much anticipation. After a solid first run, Taylor Bridges, Alex Martin, and Drew Cook all finished in the top three spots for the guys team. The girls did not hesitate to shred and Shannon Hildebrandt, Liz Gaston, and Kim Ellison took the first spots for the girls team. Although everyone was excited with their performances, both the girls and the guys team fell a little short to JMU, putting both teams in second overall for the day. Although we are still waiting for the slopestyle results, we were pretty excited to have a few of our riders compete in a freestyle competition. Without the results announced yet, we know that everyone who competed represented App State well. Snowshoe was our best weekend by far and was a great way for all of the riders to grow closer and chill with the seniors for one last conference race. Brendan Elliot says it perfectly when he states, “It was super steezy and we had a blast shredding the West Virginian powpow with all our fellow Dirty South USCSA Gnarcats. Not only does our team get to bond on these trips, but we also get a chance to hang out with riders all over the Southeast, making our conference the most awesome group of people ever! As the regular season comes to a close, we look forward to enjoying the last weeks of boarding at App Ski together and are getting more and more stoked as Regionals in Timberline, West Virginia and Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho approach. Happy shredding, everybody! Megan Page, Member

Executive’s Corner
a word from our executives...
More money for Club Sports! The Budgetary meeting has been the focus of operations within the Club Sports office this past week. The executive team began contacting and researching our peer institutions to collect data for our budgetary meeting. It has been interesting to see how our program aligns with our peer institutions/ sisters schools. One school said, "our program is a benchmark school for club sports programs". This is attributed to all of the hard work our teams do on and off the field and the innovative ideas that our studentathletes provide to the leadership for program improvements (ex. Tier system, budget points…). Outside of the office, the executive board led the Club Sports Council in their bimonthly meeting on Wednesday, February
20th. One of the most impactful subjects the Club Sports Council discussed was a memo that was drafted to Cindy Wallace – Vice Chancellor for Student Development, Dino DiBernardi – Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Development, Jamar Banks – Director for CSIL , Joe Carter – Director for UREC, and SGA Senate about Senate Bill 046-007. (see 2/20/13 CS Council minutes for actual memo) The basic facts that one would need to know is VOTE NO to the referendum for Senate Bill 046-007 on Appalnet March 4th – 7th, 2013 because the bill will make Club Sports representation to SGA skewed (see 2/20/13 CS Council minutes for more details). The rest meeting went smoothly and the council committees were able to accomplish several tasks during their meetings:
• Service Committee • Marketing o Clothes Drive – Each team o Appalnet for logo contest and brings in trash bag of clothes flyers you get 1 budget point and o Open skate with ice hockey you can get up to 4 points o Club Sports T-shirts are DONE! o Volunteer with Hospitality house Just need to be picked up in the future • Budget Point • Fundraising o Focusing on National o Comeback Shack March 6 or Championship March 20 Reimbursement o Bake Sale, Easter egg hunt o Established Entry fees for o 5k not on priority list right now National Competitions section • Unity o Hotel fees o Dodge ball tournament e-mail will be sent out soon, please respond ASAP! o Club Sport Council Picture next meeting o Challenging teams to make a (tasteful) Harlem Shake video to possibly be played at the banquet.
