Women’s Lacrosse February 11th, App State Women’s Lacrosse ventured to Raleigh to dominate NC State. They were victorious in their win, with a score of 9 to 1. Everyone thought it was a great start to the season, and the upperclassmen were very happy with the performance of the freshman and new members. After a solid week of practice, the team traveled to Elon for a day of conference games. They took on Radford, Elon, and Chapel Hill. The first game against Radford was a success. During the following two games the team put up a great fight, especially against Chapel Hill. Everyone was working together and having fun on the field, so the ultimate outcome of the day was again, another success. -article by Alex Wolf (Team Fan)

Women’s Ultimate The Nonads started of the season with a tournament at Clemson, and proved to be a better team than last semester. They went 4 and 2 breaking seed twice against Vanderbilt and College of Georgia. The App State Women’s Ultimate team is looking forward to their next tournament, Chucktown Throwdown in Charleston, South Carolina on February 25-26. The team looks forward to playing colleges they have not yet seen this season. This is the Nonad’s first sanctioned tournament of the year, and they could not be more excited or ready. -article by Kasey Telfer (Secretary)

Men’s Ultimate The past two weeks have been up and down for the Men’s Ultimate team. Since the last article we have had two back to back tournaments with a third one on the way this weekend in Charleston, SC. Two weekends ago we competed in the prestigious Queen City Tune Up tournament in Charlotte, NC. We went into this tournament with high hopes, but unfortunate for us we were unable to deliver on our expectations. Playing against top 25 teams in the nation all of our games were within 2 or 3 points, however we were unable to pull it all together. From this tournament we learned a lot about ourselves and what aspects of our game need more work in order for us to be ready for sectionals. This past weekend is a different story. We sent a handful of veterans along with our rookies to a B-team tournament at James Madison University. Through the cold weather the Nomads went undefeated with no team scoring more than 7 points on them for the whole weekend. The Nomads walked away tournament champs earning an awesome flag as the trophy. We are very proud of our rookies and hope to feed off of their good fortune for this tournament in Charleston. -article by Daniel Niwinski (Vice President)

Snowboarding Last week the ASU Snowboarding team traveled to Snowshoe for our final conference competition of the season. It turned out to be a great weekend for both the women’s and men’s teams. The women swept the competition away, with Liz Gaston placing first, Laurel Hall in second, and Kim Ellison in third, which assured the team a win. The men’s team had a good showing as well, Taylor Bridges in fourth, Chad Strickland in sixth, and Travis Ott in tenth and a team finish of second. In the freestyle competition on Sunday both teams had good showing, with Shannon Hildebrandt placing first and Drew Cook bringing home second. Overall it turned out to be a pretty gnar weekend for both teams! -article by Taylor Bridges (Team Member)

Ice Hockey The Appalachian State Ice Hockey Mountaineers wrapped up their regular season last Friday with an 8-3 loss to division leading UNC Charlotte. Charlotte took an early 4-0 first period lead and held off Ice Mountaineer rallies for the victory. Despite this, the Mountaineers qualify for the fourth spot in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference playoffs. BRHC Carolina division playoffs are this Friday at Extreme Ice in Indian Trail where the fourth placed Mountaineers will again face Charlotte for the right to advance to division finals in Lynchburg, VA at Liberty University on Saturday. While everyone is encouraged to come see the Mountaineers in action on Friday, for those unable to make the trip, Charlotte often broadcasts their games over the internet. More information can be found on their website. -article by Steven Rausch (Vice President)

Swimming The Swim Club traveled down to UGA on February 11th with a very limited number of swimmers and was able to pull out 5th out of 12 teams. Everyone is very happy with our finish there, especially with a smaller roster then usual. This weekend, the 25th, we will be driving down to UNCG/Wake Forest for their first ever combined home meet in Greensboro’s new aquatic center. This is expected to be a big meet and we have high hopes of placing well. We have been upping our practice intensity over the past few weeks trying to get everyone in shape for the East Coast Championships (ECCs) in late march. The semester is starting to get into full swing and we are excited to see where it leads. Follow us on twitter (@AsuSwim) for live meet updates from UNCG and ECCs! -article by Dan Wallace (Secretary)

Fencing This weekend the Appalachian State University Fencing Club will be hosting our first official tournament of the year at the Quinn Recreation Center in an event that is better known as the Fourth Annual Massacre on the Mountaintop. Saturday will be the first day of the tournament, in which the foil fencing events will be held, and the epee events will begin the morning after it. After having prepared the club’s newer members for this particular weekend the results will show the fruit of what they have learned and officially introduce them to the competitive aspect of fencing. It is certainly something to look forward to. -article by Alex Fogleman (Vice President)

Cycling ASU Leads the ACCC After 2 Weekends of Racing. On the opening weekend of collegiate racing, App headed to NC State to tackle a flat, windy road race on Saturday, and a rolling, windy road race on Sunday. In the Men’s A race on Saturday, an early break with ASU’s Clayton Omer and 6 other riders was established. The field did not bother chasing because they didn’t think the break would stick, but at some points during the race, the break had over 5 minutes on the field. The strong men of App decided that the odds weren’t in their favor and began to chase, bringing the break down to 1:30 in the second to last lap. They decided to stop chasing when 2 riders from the break were dropped and swallowed up by the field. Clayton won the sprint for first place out of the break, while Andre Vandenberg won the field sprint to come in 6th place for App. In the Men’s B/Women’s A race, the group stayed together during the entire race,
In the Men’s B race, Alan Garvick broke away on the 3rd lap and soloed to the win. Nina Laughlin battled NCSU’s Caroline Moakley for a sprint win in the Women’s A race. The following weekend brought 9 members of the team to Watha, NC, for UNCW’s pancake flat road race in the middle of nowhere. Tractors and farm animals littered the vast landscape, and the nearest gas station seemed like it was 100 miles away. Good thing bikes don’t need gas, just HUMAN POWER (said in an Arnold Scwarzegger voice). Anyway...in the Men’s A race, riders were attacking left and right, and a few promising breaks were established throughout the race. In the end, however, they were all brought back and the finish came down to a bunch sprint. Andre came in 3rd, Reid finished 4th, and Nick came in 7th for App.
with the finish coming down to a chaotic bunch sprint where Nina Laughlin of App took a close 2nd place behind Lauren Komanski of NC State. Sunday provided even more excitement in the Men’s A race, where Nick Inabinet of ASU broke away on the first lap of a 60 mile race and soloed to the win. Andre Vandenberg and Reid Beloni were part of a late break that put them in position to finish 3rd and 4th,
In the Women’s A race, Nina Laughlin launched a few attacks to try to get away, but the finish came down to a bunch sprint. Even though her right foot came unclipped from her pedal in the sprint, she was able to come away with the victory for App. On Sunday, the team traveled to Campbell University to race in a rainy, windy crit complete with an

Lautner was able to sprint for 5th place, and in the Men’s B crit, Alan Garvick attacked on the last lap only to be overtaken at the line by a VT rider, and finished 2nd. In the Women’s A race, Nina Laughlin attacked on the first Prime lap and soloed off the front of the field for 3 laps. NCSU and Navy girls brought her back eventually, but she nicked the NCSU rider at the line to win the race.
In the Men’s A crit, Nick Inabinet attacked early in the race. He lapped the field with 6 to go, which caused some confusion in the field. Reid used this to his advantage and launched a solid solo attack that guaranteed him 2nd place in the race. Nick led Andre out for the field sprint, and App finished 1,2,3! -article by Nina Laughlin

Alpine Ski The ASU Alpine Ski team has recently finished up their regular season race schedule. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams will send their top five racers to Snowshoe Mountain this weekend for the USCSA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Teams will race GS and Slalom on Friday 2/24 and Saturday 2/25. For the Southeast Conference, the Men’s team finished 3rd place, just behind Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. The Women’s team placed 4th, an improvement from last year. Both teams
also had several finishers among the top fifteen of the Southeast Conference. President Tommy Penick finished his final and most successful season 7th overall for the men, while Taylor Jones placed 11th. For the women, sophomore Sara Beeken finished 8th, and junior Rosie Hewitt placed 13th. Both teams are expected to perform well at Regional’s this weekend. -article by Rosie Hewitt (Secretary)
Men’s Lacrosse The Men’s Club Lacrosse team had two games this past weekend. The first game we played was against Wake Forest at home on Saturday, which unfortunately we lost with a final score of 11 to 9. This loss was an unfortunate turn of events, as we felt we had more than enough skill to beat them. Our loss on Saturday gave us some motivation to win going into our second game of the weekend, which was away on Sunday at Wofford. Despite
Women’s Soccer
Women’s Club Soccer has had a great start to the semester with a lot of talented new players coming out to practices and the oldies but goodies returning ready to rumble. Since our old coach from last spring sadly passed away, Sam Rathnow, in December we are going to be playing a lot of games in honor of him this year especially the Carolina Cup 7v. 7 tournament where Sam lead us to second place! The girls were supposed to play our first game on February 19th against UNC Blue’s Club

the nasty weather and a long drive we were able to come out with a win, with a final score of 17 to 10. After this weekend our record has gone to 2 - 1, with an upcoming away game this Saturday against Liberty University. We plan to work hard the week of practice leading into our next game and hope to come out with another win making our record 3 -1. -article by Scott Murphy (Secretary)
soccer team, but the team decided to cancel because of the snow and it being dangerous to travel in. Therefore, our first games will be February 25th in Clemson, South Carolina. It will be a round robin playing the University of Georgia at 12pm and then Clemson at 2pm. Hopefully the girls bring their A game and we rock the socks off both of those teams because we definitely have the skill level to do so. -Nicole DeGabriel
