Women’s Soccer Women’s Club soccer has had a great past three weeks. They traveled down to Clemson, South Carolina to play two games against Clemson University and The University of Georgia(UGA). They came out with a 2-0 win against UGA with some great goals in the second half. The team was still excited about the win against UGA and came out a little bit slow in the first half against Clemson allowing them to score a goal making it 0-1 and could not rally back to score, so the girls ended up losing 0-1 against Clemson. The girls celebrated their win by going to Zaxbys after the game; then they all got together that Saturday night when they got back to Boone. The next weekend, the girls traveled to Winston-Salem to
play Wake Forest University. The girls had an amazing game and ended up winning 1-0. Everyone played really well. Emily Verdu scored the winning goal! The girls were on point against Wake Forest passing and dribbling all around their opponents, and going in hard to all their tackles. They showed their stuff. The team held there first home games of the season on March 24th. In hopes of playing a round robin with the University of South Carolina and High Point University, but the weather did not agree with those plans. The team got in their first game of the day against USC at 11 o’clock and won 3 to 0. Then the weather started to turn for the worst. USC and HPU started their game at 1, but only made it
through the first half before the referees had to usher everyone off the field for lighting. The girls waited for the storm to pass and then went back out on the field to finish up their match. USC ended up beating HPU 3-2. The weather then did not hold up and the club team had to cancel the 3 o’clock game. The pictures are from the 11 o’clock game against USC. The Women’s team is headed back to Clemson for their annual tournament called the Spring Shindig. Hopefully they will play their hardest and come out with a some wins. Maybe even a trophy! -article by Nicole DeGabriel (Vice President)

Men’s Ultimate The Men’s Ultimate team has been rolling in the month of January. We capped off the month with a win at our home tournament this past weekend. Through the rain and hail we played our hearts out and ended the weekend with a victory over our alumni team, the Oldmads, in the Championship game. The win this past weekend makes it our 3rd tournament in a row that we have won. Our chemistry as a team is coming together and our rookies are looking like experienced veterans. The future for the Nomads is looking good. We still have 2 tournaments left in the season. One is the Saturday before Easter down in Columbia, SC. This is just a one day tournament that we hope to use as a warm up for Sectionals. Sectionals will take place April 21/22nd in Wilmington, NC. Nomads are looking good and playing even better! We hope to continue our success through the month of April. -article by Daniel Niwinski (Vice President)

Equestrian The Equestrian Club has completed our competitive season with very respectable finishes. The Hunt Seat team finished 6th in the region and the Dressage team finished 4th in the region. The Western team started attending shows and is showing so much progress and dedication. We have our fingers crossed that Katie Sedlmeyer (Dressage Team Captain) will get the wildcard spot and qualify for nationals in April! We could not be more proud of ALL of our teams and their accomplishments! We elected new officers this week for the upcoming year and would like to congratulate Katelyn Young (President), Katie Sedlmeyer (Vice President), Kristin Clark (Treasurer), Chloe Paddison (Secretary), Mallery Patterson (Hunt Seat Captain), Nikka Hronis (Dressage Captain), and Danielle Plourd (Western Captain). Although our team competitions are finished for the year, the Equestrian Club is still working hard! Last week we put on a show for our members and some of the younger riders at our barn. We are also volunteering with Horse Helpers of the High Country, continuing to exercise and train horses, and organizing events for next year. We are excited to have grown so rapidly in the past few years and are fortunate to have such dedicated and motivated members! We can’t wait to see what next year will bring! Fencing Fencing Club will be attending the North Carolina Divisional National Qualifying Tournament at NC State’s Carmichael Gym. This tournament is being held between March 31st and April 1st, and after having spent month upon month training for this particular event, all of Fencing Club is ready to do an excellent job whether it be through footwork, bladework, or parries. The club itself will be participating in both foil and epee events, testing everything that has been taught, and it should serve as an excellent experience for all the members in attendance. -article by Alex Fogleman (Vice President)

Women’s Basketball
This past week, Women’s Basketball held officer elections for the upcoming 20122013 season. With Secretary Allie Knorzer graduating in May, and Vice President Mindy Scott graduating in December, there were very important roles left to be filled on the team. We now have a new Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The new Vice President is freshman Lauren Mckellop, the new Secretary is freshman Casey Tarwater, and the new Treasurer is sophomore Murphy Doyen. We also have a new Club Sports representative, sophomore Tori Ballance. We have a young team so to have freshmen stepping up to fill important roles like Vice President and Secretary is very exciting and promising for the future of this team. After the upcoming season, there will be no more original club members left on the team, so it is important that the younger members begin taking an active role in the administration of our club. The team is now spending our time preparing for the ACIS National Tournament to be held April 13-15th at NC State. -article by Morgan Page (President) From Left to Right: Treasurer Murphy Doyen, Vice President Lauren Mckellop, Secretary Casey Tarwater

Women’s Rugby At 12pm sharp on Friday the 30th the Women’s rugby team is hitting the road to travel to Mobile, Alabama where we will represent Appalachian State in the Southern Regional Division II playoffs. After beating our competition, over the last semester, we are going to Regionals this weekend with an impressive 4-0 record. Kickoff on Saturday is at 1:00pm against the College of Charleston. This will be an amazing game and you can guarantee that everyone on the pitch will be giving 100%. Winning our game on Saturday will ensure that we travel to Alabama again on April 21st to play in the Semi-finals as one of the top 16 teams in the Nation.
If we win our match on Saturday this also means we play another game on Sunday at 10am. Winning the game on Sunday also means we travel to Alabama on the 21st as one of the teams in the upper 8 bracket of the 16 teams. In the Semi-final matches, teams are divided using a high-low protection match up system so that the highest scoring team will play the lowest scoring team. During practice the last few weeks you have been able to feel the intensity and the excitement on and off the field. We have all worked hard and put forth a lot of time and effort to get to where we are now. Allie Mackinnon our pack captain says “I am looking forward to seeing our team play
to our full potential to show off all the hard work we have put in”. Since the beginning of the year we have had practice four times each week, put in time playing matches, fundraising, and team bonding. Bonnie Nguyen our back captain says she is “most looking forward to spending time with our team, bonding, and winning this weekend”. This weekend promises to be great from the minute the bus pulls out to the minute we get back. This is a great chance to spend time with everyone, play a sport we love, and represent our school. -article by Susan Harrill (Vice President)

Snowboarding With the Nationals race week being the week before App State’s spring break and Appalachian Ski Mountain closing at the end of break, snowboarding season for the 2011-2012 year has come to a close. The team had a great season starting out with the most freshmen team members the team has ever seen. Our girls’ team took first place and guys placing in second in the South-Eastern Conference. After Conference, the team went on to Snowshoe Resort, West Virginia where the girls again took first place at Regionals while the guys had a repeat for second place. The season was then finished off with Kim Ellison (junior) and Taylor Bridges (junior) traveling all 18 hours to Sunday River, Maine where they took 5th and 18th place respectively for the team at Nationals. In my personal opinion, joining the App State Snowboarding Team as a freshman this past season was a great experience and I’m sure all the members of the team would agree. As the summer rolls around and gradually moves back into the fall semester of 2012, we’ll be looking to recruit some new riders to add to the team and want to encourage anyone interested in snowboarding to come check it out whether they’re Shaun White status or just learning to ride. -article by Brendan Elliott (Team Member)

Men’s Lacrosse This past week the Men’s Lacrosse team had two games. On Thursday, the 22nd, the team was able to come out with a win over UNC-Charlotte with a final score of 17 - 7. After taking a lead early on, we were never too worried about the outcome of the game. Having a nice lead the coaches were able to start getting all players rotated in, giving them some nice playing time. Unfortunately the next game against Davidson we played on Saturday would not turn out as we hoped. After a delay of game with 5 minutes left in the first half as a result of lightning, the Men’s team tried their hardest to get back into the game, even as it started to hail. However, we were not able to get ahead even after catching up in the 4th quarter. The final score of the game was 11 - 14. This loss has motivated us to put in the necessary work leading up to our next game this Sunday at home verse Elon. The team is looking forward to coming out strong and coming out ahead with a nice win. -article by Scott Murphy (Secretary)
Men’s Rugby After defeating Furman 55-8, AHO will have their last home game of the conference season this Saturday against UNC Charlotte. The match will be played at State Farm Fields, across the bridge and to the left. Kickoff time is set to be 1:00, and we hope to see many fans and supporters out there cheering us on! -announcement by Harris Lewis (Match Secretary)
