The ASU Cycling Team traveled to William & Mary February 23rd and 24th to compete in the second weekend of the collegiete season. Saturday’s road races started out in the morning with near freezing temperatures accompanied by drizzling rain. ASU had racers in the men’s and women’s C categories. Forrest Howard finished third in the men’s C race and Nick Albertone placed fifth. Baylee Hale and Abbey Dahl finished the women’s C road race in eighth and eleventh, respectively. As the rain subsided, the men’s A, B, and women’s A races began. ASU had two top ten finishes in the men’s B race, with Michael Potter in eighth and Shawn Lautner in ninth. Nina Laughlin and Kelly Perkins finished third and fourth, respectively, in women’s A. The criterium on Sunday included many more turns than a typical square crit, and wrecks were plentiful.

In the women’s A race, Nina Laughlin and Kelly Perkins placed first and second, respectively. In the men’s B race all three ASU riders finished in the top ten, with Miles Hubbard in fourth, Michael Potter in seventh, and Shawn Lautner in tenth. In the women’s C race, Baylee Hale and Abbey Dahl finished sixth and eighth, respectively. After a serious crash in the men’s A field, causing a pause in the race, it was decided that the race would no longer continue and was ended short of its originally planned 60 minutes. The races planned over Spring Break have been cancelled so we will not have our next race until the Naval Academy on the 23rd of March.

Women’s Ultimate started off with a bang this semester, traveling to both Clemson and Charleston for tournaments in February. Clemson was the team's first USA Ultimate sanctioned tournament of the season and brought many close exciting games with it. Sadly, the team lost in universe point against Elon and College of Charleston. After the loses at Clemson, the team worked on conditioning to become a faster, smarter team. The hard work at practice shined through at College of Charleston's Chucktown Throwdown tournament. The team’s goals were to work on speed and field awareness. The first games proved to be difficult with rainy weather, which caused a lot of turnovers. But once the team got their flow, we were able to outrun and outplay most of our opponents. The Nonads finished 5th overall, collecting wins against Elon, Georgia College, and College of Charleston with close games against the University of South Carolina and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Since Chucktown, the team has been working on fundamentals and increasing the pace of our game. Senior Hannah Teagle says "the team is looking great in practice and really coming together to work as a team. I think we can do really well in the tournaments we have coming up at the end of March. It is so exciting to see all the improvement coming together!" Next, the Nonads will travel to Elon for their annual Nutty Huck tournament. Kasey Telfer, Secretary

7 The Women’s Club Basketball Team hosted our second home tournament this past weekend. This Mountaintop Madness tournament was a great success! Teams who attended and participated were Virginia Tech, Lynchburg, Clemson, and Wake Forest. We got off to a strong start, going 3-0 in our games. We defeated Wake Forest twice and one of these wins was a fairly close game decided in the final minutes! We also defeated Lynchburg’s team. Winning these three games brought us to the championship game against Virginia Tech! We weren’t able to pull out the win to get the first place trophy, but we are proud of our second place finish and we really got a lot out of this game. This final game really highlighted some of the things we do well, such as team defense, along with things we need to work on to improve our playing. Our team is looking forward to hosting more home tournaments in the future! We are now looking ahead to our next tournament, which occurs the weekend of March 22nd, and is at the Ohio State University! We are very excited to travel to and see the campus which most of us are not at all familiar with. There should also be some new competition which our App State team has never faced off against. This tournament is right around the corner and we only have a few more practices before we’ll be on our way to Ohio so we are really focusing and making good use of our time in the gym. We are ready to see what the Ohio State tournament has in store for us! Casey Tarwater. Secretary

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS Executive officers are an integral part of the Club Sports Program at App State. Every year three new officers are elected to serve and lead our players and manage the inner workings of Club Sports. Executives are students just like you; they go to classes on campus, perhaps hike the trails around Boone, and you could probably catch them walking King Street, but most importantly they are dedicated to what they are passionate about: Club Sports. We thought it would be neat to go back and ask some of our Executives of past years how they’re doing, where they are, and how serving as a Club Sports Executive has impacted their lives in the real world. Here’s what they had to say...

What was your favorite memory of being a CS Executive? Kelley Taylor (2010-2011) I graduated in 2011 with a Recreation Management major and I was President of Women’s Ultimate. Right now, I am in Florida working at Outward Bound. My favorite memories are the Club Sports Nights at the basketball games and eating candy and laughing at Exec. meetings. Being an Exec. is an amazing opportunity to have a say in something that you care about and to make that chance same available for others in the future.

Lexi Headen (formally Heileman)

(2010-2011)

I graduated in 2011, and was the President of Women's Club Soccer before becoming an Exec. I am now about to start a Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at Belmont University, but currently reside in Chattanooga. One of my favorite memories was my Exec. project: a resource notebook for speed, strength, and agility training. It was something that I was able to contribute that I was truely passionate about and that would be beneficial to both current and future sports teams.

Michael Neve

(2011-2012)

I’m double majoring in Accounting and Management and am currently the VicePresident of Men’s Ultimate, two years as Treasurer before that. Currently, I am working for a public accounting firm as part of an internship. I will be back in Boone taking classes for the second half of the semester. Lots of great experiences to choose from, but I think my favorite memory is of our (the CS execs) presentation to the Budgetary Committee. We essentially went in front of the committee (which was comprised of different people ranging from upper admin. to students) and got to talk about how great the CS program is, and why we deserved more money from the University. It was cool because alot of hard work (research, preparation, etc.) went into the presentation and it went very smoothly. Also, it was neat to realize that we didn't have to stretch the truth in order to brag on the CS program. There was no need to "pad the stats" if you will.

Lindsey Mullen

(2011-2012)

I am majoring in Business Marketing & Management and was Treasuer of the Equestrian team (2011-2012) This is my Super senior year, graduating in May! My favorite memory... Kind of a silly thing, but it always makes me smile... Comparing the photo of Lizzy, Michael, & I from when we were first elected in Spring 2011 to the photo of us at the End of Year Banquet in 2012. It's so funny. We go from standing about a foot apart from each other with our hands at our sides to a year in a full on group hug!

What is one thing that you learned as an Exec that you have taken with you into your life today?

Bryan Holbrook (2009-2010)

Amanda Fox

I majored in Business Management and graduated in 2010. I was the Founder/President and Player Coach of the Club Baseball team for 3 years before serving as Treasurer and Executive during my senior year. Today, I am a “3L” (i.e. a third-year student) at University of Cinncinnati College of Law. I will graduate in May and plan to sit for the Ohio Bar Exam in July.

(2008-2009)

I majored in Communication with a concentration in Journalism, and minored Spanish graduating in 2009. I was the President of the Climbing Team and I'm currently the destinations editor for Climbing Magazine in Boulder, Colorado.

I've always been a responsible person, but being an CSE makes you rethink college responsibility. You're in charge of things that other people rely on, so you can't really mess it up.

I would say that my time as an Executive taught me that upon receiving a promotion or accepting increased responsibility, it is important to remember how your decisions will impact those around you and to think back to when you were “in their shoes,” so to speak.

Erin Brawley

(2009-2010)

I played Womens' Lacrosse during my time at Appalachian. I held the position of Vice President on the lacrosse team and loved being a part of Club Sports. I am currently in my last semester of graduate school in speech language pathology

What do was the best part of being an Exec? Why would you recommenend the position?

The best part of being a Club Sports Executive is the network of people that you get to meet. I had the opportunity to interact on a more personal level with people on other teams that I may not have gotten to know otherwise, as well as people in upper administration like Cindy Wallace and Dino DiBernardi. In my opinion, the people are the best part of Club Sports. I would recommend this position to anyone that was interested. It was a huge part of my college experience and I really enjoyed it!

Katie Facciola

(2011)

I majored in Electronic Media/ Broadcasting, graduated in December 2011, and was Treasurer/Webmaster for Women’s Lacrosse. I currently live in Lowell, Mass working with High Risk Youth (young parents, homeless and gang involved) trying to help them get their GED and Culinary soft skills training. I really enjoyed supporting my teams I was in charge of rather than just mine. I also loved the bond I formed with the other Execs. Do it because you want to improve all of Club Sports, don’t do it if you are just trying to make your team better.

I am a Recreation Management major with a minor in Geology. Currently I’m the President of the Women’s Lacross team and I am finishing my final semester at ASU. The best part of being an Executive is working with all the different people. Not only do you get to meet all the athletes behind each sport but also so many leaders through out the University. I have brought away so many friendships from my time as an Executive and have learned about many awesome new sports.

Lizzy Lagasse (2011-2012)

What was the best part of being an Exec?

I majored in Communications/Journalism/History, graduating in 2009. I served as President and Treasurer of the Ice Hockey Team and am currently living in Boston MA working as the Finance Director for John Connolly’s campaign for mayor.

Eric Chast

Nobody understands the pressure and demand that is put on an officer of a Club Sports Team except another officer of a Club Sports Team. The three of us, along with Erin and our publicity programmer (Michelle Henderson) instantly became a team capable of problem solving, expanding Club Sports' image and bringing teams together. I fenced the Lacrosse President (I lost), raced the Swim Team (I lost) and climbed that climbing wall (it won). It was by far my best experience in college.

2013-2014 Student Leadership Opportunities in Club Sports Team Officers: All Club Sports teams are organized and operated by students within each individual sport. Each team has a board of leaders voted on by the membership of each individual team and it is outlined in each team's constitution. Minimum positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasure, Club Sports Council Representative; teams may require additional positions based on the activity of the Club and the governing body. These positions each must have an active role in the administration of their Club team. Without all of the leadership working together, a teams will not reach it's full potential, both on and off the "field". 2013-2014 Team Officers are due to the Club Sports Office by Wednesday, April 10 by New Officer Submission Form.

The Executive Officers: Executive Officers are elected to represent the entire Club Sports program to campus administration. Women’s Rugby completed our Matrix (conference) season this past weekend. After having had 4 forfeits due to lack of numbers for the other teams we were excited to play our last two games against Elon and USC. Our record moved to 18 – 0 after defeating both teams (54-0 Elon, 67-7 USC). These two games were an excellent opportunity for us to assess our strengths and weaknesses because we are now looking onto post-season play in regionals and potentially nationals. At the start of the semester the team ordered half-zips and t-shirts which we were excited to receive this week especially with this chilly weather. Madison Brubaker, President

This past weekend the Appalachian State University

Fencing Team has brought

a large group of fencers to the North Carolina Divisional Tournament in Greensboro. There our fencers competed in the foil and epee events, while some of our newer members observed the numerous ongoing bouts in order to get a better idea of what competitive fencing is like. Even more importantly, we were able to make more connections with other fencing officials, catch up with old coaches, and finally, establish what we hope to be an awesome friendship with the fencing club at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Overall, the ASU Fencing Club's trip over there was certainly productive. Alex Foglemen, President At the end of February, the Swim Team hosted their first home meet this semester. Schools from all around the southeast came to compete, including University of Central Florida, Clemson, University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and many more. This was the largest swim meet that has been held in the Student Recreation Center pool. The meet ran smoothly thanks to all the parent and student volunteers. Overall, Appalachian won the entire swim meet, which is very impressive for a meet that size. Currently, the Swim Team is training for our National meet which is held in Atlanta every year. As the winter weather drags on, the Triathlon Team continues to prepare for their first event of the season in April. Five members are officially signed up for the Belews Lake International Triathlon, but many other members plan on coming down the mountain to cheer on their teammates. On Wednesday, members met at the outdoor track for some pacing workouts. Early Wednesday morning, other members went for a swim at the SRC pool. Sunday afternoon, some members headed out to Lenoir to escape the cold weather. They found some great gravel roads and forest trails around the area of Pisgah National Forest. The 45 degree weather and sunshine was a welcome change from the sub-20 degree weather in Boone. Hopefully, the temperatures warm up soon so that the team can go out on some group cycling rides after Spring Break.

The team has started talking with Watauga Parks and Recreation about the possibility of hosting a triathlon right here in Boone next spring. The date has not yet been set, but the location will be the Greenway, starting from the Watauga Swim Complex. Stay posted on updates to the planning of this exciting event. Other exciting news is Boone Bikes offer to become a team sponsor. As our partner in promoting the sport of Triathlon, they will help the team with purchasing uniforms as the team promotes their business across the state. Anna Gannett, President
