APP STATE FENCING
Fencing is the oldest Club Sport up here at ASU, with our roots going all the way to when Fencing was an official team sport as far back as 1899.
E G
It's the end of the season for Fencing Club. Only two more practices and a tournament remain before the end of the semester. We've had a great Fall Season, acquired many new fencers who have improved tremendously since they had their first lessons with us back at the beginning of the school year. The end of the season also marks the departure of some of our veteran members, who will be graduating this semester. Though it is disappointing that those that trained many of us have to leave, we look forward to meeting them on the fencing strip again in the future, and to have them face the new generation that we have trained!
As far as training has gone, our new fencers have made significant progress. It seemed like just yesterday that they were all being coached on how to do basic footwork. Granted, basic footwork is still worked on even now in order to better refine it for upcoming competitions, but there has definitely been a lot of growth since the beginning. Footwork is a very important part of fencing, as it helps you move quickly and efficiently in order to avoid getting hit by your opponent. It also serves an offensive purpose; if you time your movements quickly enough you can catch your opponent offguard and get a point on them. We have also been working on blade work with both foil and epee. One of the primary drills that is done is called the basic parry drill, in which people partner up with each other with one person attacking and another defending. The attacker will call out a specific target area that they will then proceed to lunge towards while the defender deflects the strike with
the appropriate parry and goes for the riposte. This is done two times in the same target area before the attacker then goes to attack the same area a third time. However, when the defender goes for the parry on the third instance, the attacker will then shift his blade around their opponent's to bypass their parry in an action called a deceive or disengage. This attack continues, allowing the attacker to score a hit in spite of the opponent's defensive actions. It is constructive for fencers do this drill because it is done in a way where both partners are able to benefit from it at once. The defender is able to judge what parry to do against what attacks, as well as focus on perfecting the parries themselves, while the attacker is able to learn eventually how and when to bypass an opponent's guard. cont. on next page
The weapons we have been teaching are the foil and epee, which are both thrusting weapons. There is a third weapon in fencing, sabre, which is a slashing weapon, although it is not practiced much at all by App State Fencers. However, the key difference between them is that the valid target area in foil is limited to the torso area and it also has a strict code of rules determining movement priority. In epee you can stab your opponent anywhere and come out with a point. It is probably the closest to an actual sword-fight one can get to. In sabre, target area is anything above the waist and it also has movement priority somewhat similar to foil.
When asked about the history of Appalachian’s Fencing Club, President Alexander Fogleman had this to say: "Fencing is the oldest club sport up here at ASU, with our roots going all the way back to when Fencing was an official team sport as far back as 1899. I don't know terribly much about our history beyond that, but if anything I will say that two things that we definitely have on our side are persistence and longevity. That's for sure." Fencing at App State has a legacy that spans over a century. The end of the season, and the final tournament that precedes it, are just the closing of one chapter of Fencing Club's continuing history.

We will be back in spring, ready and eager to get back to training and competing. The spring season is more active, with many more tournaments happening both home and away. As soon as we return we will be preparing to host Massacre on the Mountain, as well as preparing for Divisionals, the definitive tournament to marking placement in the state and qualifying for regionals. So for Fencing Club, the season may have ended, but the year is just getting started!! Bennett Hatfield, Secretary

8 As the semester comes to a close for Cycling so does our cyclocross season, with the Conference Championships this weekend at Wake Forest. We are currently in 3rd for the conference but a win both days would guarantee a Conference Championship. Our first race next semester will be February 9-10th at NC State University. The team is very excited for road season to start and hope all of the hard work over the winter pays off! Shawn Lautner, Secretary
The Snowboarding team is more stoked than ever as the season is right around the corner! Our first races will be following the winter break and the team is itching to get on our boards and show our conference how App State rides. Practices will be beginning next week as App Ski Mountain opens up for the season. We hope everyone has a great winter break and we will see you on the slopes next semester. Joshua Joyner, Secretary

Women’s Basketball team is winding down The
the season as this semester comes to an end. We are very pleased with what our team has accomplished so far this year. We have truly improved and this has shown through our performance on the court. This semester we participated in three tournaments which were at Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and a home tournament here at App. The highlight of our season would have to be hosting our first home tournament. It was a great experience and we also really executed what we had been working on all season long. We played great in this tournament and came out winning three of our four games. We will finish out the semester continuing to work hard by practicing and scrimmaging in the gym. We are really looking forward to competing next semester and continuing to grow as a team!

The Equestrian Team had a great fall semester this year! It’s crazy to think that it’s already over. We started the semester by hosting our 4th IDA show. It was very successful and everyone, horses and riders, had a great time! It is always a good experience for new and returning members. Everyone comes down for work days all weekend and then spends the night together the night before the show. There is plenty of team bonding there! Our huntseat team just finished out their competitions this past weekend with a two day show at Virginia Intermont. We had the most riders compete at the shows this weekend. We got 24 rides each day! This allowed many of our new members the opportunity to participate in their first show. Some of the highlights of the weekend were: Ali Ranson placing 2nd on the flat for Open, Haley McCune placing 1st on the flat for Novice, Kristin Clark placing 2nd at Advanced walk, trot, canter, Alison Davis placing 3rd at her first show at Advanced walk, trot, canter and Katie Sedlmeyer pointing out of her division guaranteeing a spot at regionals in the spring! Tonight we had our final meeting as a potluck dinner! It was a nice time for everyone to get together and share good food and good laughs. We look forward to what next semester is going to bring us. That includes opening our spring semester with another IDA show hosted by the ASU team! It’ll be a nice break but we’re already excited for more shows, fun, and team bonding to come!

Appalachian State Ski Team’s season is just beginning even as the fall semester is coming to an end! Sugar Mountain opened up the slopes on October 31st, the earliest opening day in 43 years of operation! There were around 50 people lined up at 9am when the chair lift opened and the ASU Ski Team made up around 15 of those people. Although official practices have not started yet, the excitement of the team keeps people on the hill day after day. Here is a look at the events that have taken place this semester in preparation for the season:
Alpine hosted a pro night for the Ski and Snowboard team, thanks to Burton Davis, a ski team alum. With a change in FIS regulations and a plethora of new faces, Alpine partnered up with our teams and helped us get great deals on gear.
Outdoor Programs and Appalachian Ski Mountain partnered up Red Bull to premier Red Bull's new movie WE: A Collection of Individuals. Red Bull provided free drinks and Appalachian Ski donated various prizes for a raffle drawing. This event took place in I.G. Greer and filled the house.
The team participated in dryland practices every Monday and Thursday night throughout the semester. Practices included hikes on the parkway, indoor soccer games, ultimate frisbee, core training, ski movies, and more. Dryland practices were held until the snow started falling! Dryland helped the team grow together and bond, while getting in shape before hitting the slopes.
In the beginning of October, Dr. Witold Kosmala, our faculty Advisor, conducted a classroom session regarding proper ski technique. There was a full house including the upcoming ASU Ski Team, ASU faculty, and current ski instructors. Dr. Kosmala covered a wide variety of topics ranging from the importance of foot articulation to how to properly initiate a turn. He catered to both auditory and visual learners through lecturing, picture montages, class participations, and demonstrations. Overall, his instructions were notable and they excited the class for the upcoming season! Looking ahead in the future, the conference's first race is will be held at Beech Mountain, January 5, 2013. That is just over a month and a half away and the team could not be more excited! Ashley Cutrell, Secretary

Rebecca Haynes (President) interviewed graduating senior, Lindsey Bradshaw, who is leaving in December.
Rebecca: Lindsey, this is your last semester playing club volleyball in college, how do you feel about everything winding down? Lindsey: It is really sad that I have to leave in December and say goodbye to all of the people that I have played with for so long. But at the same time it is also really exciting to be getting outside of Boone and starting a new life and new career. That is really exciting and all of our girls are going to miss you. What would you say was your favorite part about this semester? L Oh wow, that’s a tough question, because all of our practices have been awesome and were productive. To begin with, this is the first year that we have had four full competing teams, which is exciting to see how the club has grown. However, I would have
to say that our tournaments this semester were pretty great, both time we made it out of pool play and into a semi final game. It is good feeling when you know your team is successful. All of our teams did great this semester and I as well am impressed with the way the club has grown. Over the years you have played with many different girls and on different teams. What would you say has been your favorite semester over your time at ASU? L Well as you know teams can change every semester and new girls come in. It has been a rocky few years with everyone switching teams and many girls dropping in the spring semester. With that being said, I would have to say that this semester has been the best so far. There has been little drama compared to past years, which is always a plus. I agreed with you on that. So what would you consider your best or favorite tournament that you have gone to over the years? L There are always wonderful tournaments that are held all over the state, but I would have to say my favorite tournaments are the ones that are further away because you get to play teams you don’t normally within our conferences like Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. That is awesome Lindsey and I appreciate your time. Once again club volleyball is going to miss you as one of senior players that are graduating. We hope that you can come back and watch home tournaments or attend tournaments near where you will be within the next year!
At our 5th Annual Ta-Ta Tournament, we had a total of 16 teams compete. All 4 of our App State teams pushed their way through pool play with 2 of our teams making it to playoffs. Our 1st and 2nd Regional teams played one another for the quarterfinals with our 1st Regional team coming out on top. They then lost a tough match against Elon 1 in the semifinals, and UNC Charlotte 1 took 1st place for the entire tournament. However, UNC Charlotte did not take their prize money for winning because they have a rule where they give all their profits from winning to a charity. Therefore, we were able to make a large donation to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund.

Team ended their fall season on a positive note. They traveled to East Carolina University for a round-robin style tournament and won three out of their four games. The team ended their successful season with a record of 5-3. On Saturday, the girls first took on ECU. App State played a perfect game. Their passes, shots, transitions and defense were flawless. They came away with the win, 10-7. Later in the day they played Wilmington and had another impressive game. They won against the Seahawks, 11-7. The girls were excited to report their two wins after the first day and were pumped up to continue winning the next.
On Sunday, App State and Elon played a closely matched game. Both teams played hard and just while App was gaining goals on Elon, the game came to an end. They lost by 1 but came away with high spirits regardless. The Mountaineers then had one more victory against Radford to end their weekend. Appalachian State’s Women’s Lacrosse team had a very promising fall season and can’t wait to continue their success in the spring Anna Norwood, Vice President

The Swim Team traveled north to Miami of Ohio two weeks ago to compete in the last meet of the semester. The team placed 3rd overall out of 11 teams!! This has been one of the best seasons for the team as a whole in years. As the semester is wrapping up with school, our practices have begun to calm down as we approach exams and Christmas break! We encourage everyone to rest up over break and come back rejuvenated and ready for an awesome spring semester and season!

In February we plan to travel to Tulane University in New Orleans to compete in our first meet of the spring semester. Along with our home meet soon after we will be gearing up for the East Coast Championships in April that will be held at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. Kara Rauch, Secretary
e t a t s p p A The Nonads Women’s Ultimate team is winding down this semester with one of the most successful and promising semesters in recent history. It is hard to say the best highlights and memories of the semester as there were so many! It seems that at every tournament and almost every practice incredible improvements were made and positive relationships were developed. There are many possible tournaments that the team is considering for the Spring semester. These include the Queen City TuneUp in Charlotte, North Carolina, the T-Town Throwdown in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the Scenic City Start-Up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Women’s Easterns in Wilmington, North Carolina, and the Joint Summit in Clemson, South Carolina. Since the home tournament the Blue Ridge Blow Out, there has not been much activity for the Nonads. Practices have been fairly few and far-between due to the number of busy players who aren’t able to attend, as well as the weather. I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that we are all incredibly excited for next semester to start! Definitely be looking for us at sectionals and regionals, as the team plans on improving from here!

e t a m i lt The Nomads Men’s Ultimate team will conclude the Fall 2012 season with a B Team tournament in Chapel Hill. This will be a good challenge and opportunity for many players to step up their level of play warming up for the spring season. Even though we didn’t place as high as we hoped to in some tournaments, we never failed to bring intensity to every match. One of our best games of the year was against UNCs Darkside, despite the fact the outcome was in their favor, we showed we could hold our own against top-level teams in our area. We must carry this competitive fire into the spring season if we hope to have the best season possible. A highlight of the upcoming spring season will be the Queen City Tune-Up tournament in Charlotte. This tournament regularly showcases top quality teams from across the nation. This will be a great test for us as well as a chance to beat some big name teams. We are all excited for the up and coming season and to get back on the field after a productive winter break. Its time to start making some serious cash investments in the bank.

Executive’s Corner
a word from our executives...
The past few weeks in the Club Sports office have been a blur for the Executive team. They have been continuously filing travel forms and competition reports as well as preparing for the FINAL Club Sports Council Meeting. The meeting was very exciting and filled with changes for the Club Sports Program. There were many votes and most importantly a new team was added to our Club Sports Family: Triathlon Club. The Executives are excited for them to start competing and representing Appalachian State in the water and on land. Additionally, there were 10 smaller votes presented by the Budget Points committee regarding clarification of budget point descriptions in the manual and updating the budget point system to be current with today’s Club Sports world. As the meeting ended teams were reminded that Club Sports night will be on Monday, December 3, 2012 at the ASU Women's Basketball game vs GA Southern. (More details on the Facebook page) This is a great opportunity for teams to come together and show their support of Varsity Athletics as well as our appreciation for the use of their facilities during adverse weather. This event will also be the end to the Club Sports 1,000 lbs. Canned Food Drive; don't forget to bring your cans to the game. The Executives look forward to seeing a representation from all the teams! Emily Ayotte, Executive

Two weeks ago the Club Sports Service Committee organized an opportunity for the Club Sports teams to get out into the community and serve at one of the local homeless shelters, Hospitality House. We were there to prepare and serve the evening meal which the House provides with the help of volunteers every day of the week. Our serving team included members from Snowboard, Equestrian, Women’s Volleyball, and Cycling and we were able to prepare and serve meals to 60 homeless men, women, and children at the shelter. In addition to the meal aspect, we were able to see and help out with some of Hospitality House’s other initiatives, we soon discovered it was much more than just a shelter!
Several players organized cans and dried goods in the Food Pantry, which is available to families in Boone who are on Food Stamps; other players hung up clothes in the Donation Closet, which offers free clothing to people in need; and the last of us worked in the kitchen making the dressing for turkeys that were to be given out to underprivileged families at Thanksgiving the following week. After working, one of the staff members of Hospitality House took us on a tour of the facilities and let us meet some of the residents. We were all glad to be able to be involved in what Hospitality House is doing to help the people in need in our community and we had a lot of fun working together and getting to know each other!
