EQUESTRIAN TEAM

“I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful group of people who are so talented, dedicated, and have such great attitudes. “ -Katelyn Young, President Team Photo by Morgan Erlenbach Single Portrait by Alexandra King

4 This year has been the biggest year in App State Equestrian Team history. We have been a club since 1994, we started

with 13 members and have now grown to 61 members that are competing and/or participating in lessons. When I look back this seems unreal. Four years ago when I became a member of the team as a freshman there were approximately 20 members. We barely filled up half of the small room we met in once a week. I was in absolute shock and a little nervous when I had to stand up in front of over 100 people and tell them about this year’s club! We have Dana Dewey and Sarah Klassett, our coaches at Foothills Equestrian Center to thank for our growth! If they can entice 61 girls (and Ethan :)) to drive an hour down the mountain at least once a week for lessons they must be doing something right! They accommodate about 12 members a day for lessons not including the lessons they already have AND running the farm on a daily basis. Dana and Sarah as well as the many generous boarders at Foothills Equestrian Center are so gracious to provide us with wonderful and safe horses at all different levels to ride. We could not be more thankful for all the help we get because this would certainly not be possible without our wonderful supporters! It goes without saying that our team has also grown so much because of our dedicated and enthusiastic members. While competing members are only required to go down once a week, most of them still find the time to go down and practice multiple times a week, while still keeping up with their school work and social lives. We compete against many varsity teams and are excited to feel like we are finally “holding our own.” We are making name for ourselves in the arena and are excited to be seen as serious competition (not that we aren’t proud of our numerous Regional and National Sportsmanship Awards!). Our dressage coach Dana Dewey always says, “We may not always be the winningest team but we are definitely the team that has the most fun!” It’s true, the camaraderie among our teams stand out among the rest. We are always laughing and having a good time, cheering obnoxiously loud for our teammates that had a great ride and are supportive of our teammates if that are upset about their ride. We even have lots of friends from other teams and try to get everyone to join in on our Appalachian spirit! I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful group of people who are so talented, dedicated and have such great attitudes. We strive to represent Appalachian State University with pride and we have fun doing it! Katelyn Young, President

Appalachian State Swim Team traveled to UGA in Athens, Georgia this past weekend to compete in the Radical Relay and Sprint Spectacular meet. Only traveling with 17 swimmers, the team did very well. Out of 16 teams the guys placed 3rd with only 10 swimmers, this is the best they have placed at a UGA meet. The women placed 8th. We are very excited to see where this season takes us. The next two weeks we will be preparing for our home meet, A.S.S Halloween Invitational next Saturday, October 27th. So far UNC-G, UNC-W, Elon, SPSU, ECU, Duke, Coastal Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Radford University have all confirmed that they will be in attendance.

In the time since our past tournament in Charlotte, Men’s Ultimate has been hard at work preparing for a string of upcoming tournaments. Consistent turnout at practice has resulted in improvement on both the team and individual levels across the board. Throughout the fall semester we will improve our team chemistry and fitness in order to play at our peak performance when the spring College season rolls around.

The Nomads will travel to Fairfax Virginia this weekend to compete in the Patriot Games, a tournament hosted by George Mason University. We plan on running through any competition we face, and hope to see ourselves playing late into the afternoon on Championship Sunday. Don’t forget to come out and support App State Ultimate at the Blue Ridge Blowout, November 10th and 11th located in Boone at the State Farm fields.

Fencing Team is eagerly

anticipating our first tournament. On October 27th, ASU Fencing will host the Yosef Open, our annual event for the Fall Semester. In preparation for the tournament, Fencing Club held a mock tournament this week. While the mock tournament was only amongst ourselves, it helped introduce the new members to the conditions of an actual tournament. Unlike typical five-touch bouts during practice, tournament bouts are to fifteen touches. Additionally, prior to the direct

elimination brackets, the entrants are divided into smaller pools where they fence against each other person in that pool to determine their placement in the direct elimination matches. Only one more week remains before the Yosef Open, where Appstate's Fencers will face off against rival fencers from across the state. In the meantime, Fencing Club is training hard to be at the top of our game for our first competition!

Since the last Club Sports Illustrated, the Cycling Team has finished up the mountain bike season and are proud to call ASU the 2012 D1 Mountain Bike Conference Champions! We had a great season and were glad to keep the lead on Virginia Tech and NC State all throughout. Derek Whitescarver was the overall winner for Men’s A as was Alex McMahon for Men’s B. David Varner also won Men’s C Gravity overall and Lauren MacDonald won Women’s B Gravity. Miles Hubbard is going to compete this weekend in Angel Fire, New Mexico for MTB Nationals. We are now taking a short three-week break before beginning Cyclocross season on October 27. Our first race is our home race at the Boone Fairgrounds and we are hoping for a great turnout and great season.

App State Climbing Team

All climbing photos submitted by Audrey Burton

The Appalachian State Climbers’ Coalition was founded in 2006. Since that time, it has been involved in training, educating, and encouraging climbers from Appalachian State University. The team has several focuses – some of which include training, competing, preserving access to climbing areas, and volunteering with other climbing coalitions. For this 2012-2013 school year, membership with the climbing team has nearly doubled to 108 members on the active roster – making us the largest Club Sport. The team consists of beginners to climbers that are advanced and sponsored. This year the team has shifted its concentration to more fully assist in the training and educating of climbers, as well as create a friendly, but competitive aspect to the team. This past spring, the Appalachian State Climbers’ Coalition placed 1st individually (Ryan Scurfield) at the Collegiate Climbing Series Nationals competition, and 5th as a team. We intend to carry on that legacy and increase our performance in the CCS competitions this year. October 6th marked the start to the competitive season for the Climbing Team. The Triple Crown competitions are three outdoor bouldering competitions held throughout the fall season in the Southeast. The start of these competitions is held in our own backyard at the Hound Ears Resort and Golf Club. Our team had a great showing at the competitio.

Ryan Scurfield placed 2nd in Open, Brennen Bull placed 1st in Star Chaser, and Bryce Overy placed 1st in the Light Roast category. Dallas Pitts also placed 10th in the Intermediate category, and Melise Edwards climbed so well that she was bumped from competing in Advanced to the Open category. We also had several other team members competing and participating. There will be two other Triple Crown competitions this fall, as well as Southern Comfort XI, the climbing competition we host here at Appalachian. But our true competition season starts in the spring with the Collegiate Climbing Series. As a team, we are excited about the competition season coming up this spring. We have recently started workouts and trainings at practice, coupled with yoga or ab workouts. Our team is motivated to learn, get stronger, and represent App State in the climbing community. We’re psyched to compete, get outside and climb, and continue our efforts to be a unified, competitive team.

Executive’s Corner a word from our executives...

The executives have been busy

these past few weeks finalizing rosters and updating travel forms. The big initiative right now is the 1,000 lbs. canned food drive. The Club Sports Executives have challenged every team to raise 50lbs of canned food for donation in early December. The canned food drive will also provide activities for Club Sports members to participate in. On November 4th, teammates are invited to the SRC to play inner tube water polo. The admission to the event is 1 canned good per player. The excitement surrounding the canned food drive is overwhelming. Get out there and start collecting!!
