W. Basketball The 2012 season has gotten off to a good start for the Women’s Club Basketball team. We are now into our third week of practices and we’re hard at work. We have four new freshman faces so far. They are really adding a great boost to our team and it is enjoyable to have new talent to work with and incorporate into a game plan for the season. It’s going to be great to get into a game and start working together.

Our first tournament of the season will be the weekend of September 15th and 16th and it will be held at Wake Forest. The competition looks to be tough since we will be facing off against teams such as Duke and Elon. We are excited to travel to this tournament and to begin competing. After this weekend we hope to have a few wins under our belts. We will also use this first tournament as a way to build momentum and feel confident in what we have been really working on in practice these last few weeks. We’re excited to get started!

Equestrian

The Equestrian team has started practice and is hitting the ground running. We are hosting the first competition of the season on Sunday, September 30. We are putting on a show for the Intercollegiate Dressage Association and will be competing against Virginia Tech, Virginia Intermont, Wake Forest, Salem College and Lenior-Rhyne University. Our members have already been hard at work preparing for this show. When hosting an intercollegiate show, the host school provides all of the horses for the teams to ride. This means we not only have to practice and prepare ourselves, but we have to tune up and train the horses to make sure they are suitable for the level at which they will be competing. There is a pool of approximately 25 horses that we are grooming, exercising and training to prepare for the show. We are also responsible for cleaning the barn and the upkeep of the grounds to make sure the farm is presentable for our guests on show day. This is not an easy task to say the least! We are excited to be offering a brand new and exciting class for our region. We are testing the waters with a class called Dressage Seat Equitation which allows riders to compete in a more relaxed setting. It helps them decide whether or not they would like to enter a recognized competition and at what level they would be most comfortable. The rider is judged on their overall performance rather than being scored (on a scale of 1-10) for each individual movement performed in a test. The club is continuing to grow with an approximately 60 members taking lessons. This number is growing each week as we seem to be getting new members at every meeting. We have a lot of promising new talent that we cannot wait to see in the show ring! While most of our members are competitive riders we are trying new things to accommodate all riders. We have started a recreational riding program for members who would just like to trail ride or ride for fun (not that we don’t all ride for fun!). We also offer non-competitive lesson packages that accommodate riders who would like to learn show ring techniques without the stress of actually having to compete. While we are more than excited to celebrate our successes and progression within the club and the intercollegiate riding associations, we are excited to say we have some very successful riders outside of intercollegiate competition. Our very own Danielle Plourd (Western Team Captain) has qualified and will be competing at the AQHA Novice World Championship Show in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in October. We are so proud and wish we could be there to cheer her on!

W. Ultimate

The Nonads are feeling incredibly excited about this year’s team! We have

more new players than we have had in a long time, and it seems that the retention rate is going to be very high. Each and every one of the rookies are looking very promising, with almost all of our women throwing awesome flicks and getting the hang of making solid cuts. Last week’s weather put us back a bit, as practicing inside is not very conducive to scrimmaging, but Monday night’s practice back on State Farm Fields was great. We did a drill that was new to our rookies, and all of them caught on very quickly. We also had our second

practice scrimmage of the season, and the difference between the first and the second was amazing. It is awesome to watch our rookies as they begin to wrap their minds around the game of Ultimate and to see all of the hard work we have put in so far at practice begin to pay off. Of course, learning a new sport has been challenging, but compared to previous years, the number of women we have that seem to really understand what is going on this early in the season is very high. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd we will be traveling to UNC-Charlotte along with the Men’s Ultimate team, the Nomads. In Charlotte we will be playing in the

Bank Run Tournament. Excitement is building about our first tournament, and hopefully this tournament will be an excellent opportunity for all of our new players to really see what Ultimate is all about. And of course, coming out of the tournament with some wins under our belt would be an awesome way to start the season! With the fabulous rookies we have this year, the rest of the officers and I are confident that this will happen. If you see us around campus, wish us luck!

Cycling We started the 20122013 year with our home mountain bike race at Rocky

Knob Park right outside of Boone. About 50 people came and raced from ASU, West Virginia University, NC State, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech. We had a few troubles throughout the weekend with broken chains, flat tires, etc, but those are inevitable. continued on page 7...

Cycling

Despite what fate brought, we won the weekend as a team and are currently ranked as first in the conference. We had many new members who came out to race for the team, and are very proud of all the new and returning racers. We are racing every weekend through September to finish up the mountain bike season, followed by the Mountain Bike Conference Championships the first week of October at West Virginia University.

Cycling

After mountain bike season, we will begin our cyclocross season, which will consist of six race weekends from the end of October through the beginning of December. October 27-28th will be the home cyclocross races, so come out and support the team! February will bring road season, the longest season with 10 race weekends. We have high hopes for all of the seasons: to win conference and send members to Nationals.

These past two weeks have shown an excellent start off for the Racquetball Club. Our first day of practice was a great turn out with around 15 people showing up. Throughout these first few weeks, more people have been joining in and we now have over 20 players on the team. Our player’s experience ranges from beginners to pros which is a nice contrast to have. This is helpful as beginners can learn techniques from the more advanced players and also play against people at their own level of experience. I’ve already noticed improvements with people who have just started playing and I’m confident that we’ll have a good amount of players who will be ready to play when it comes time for tournaments. As of now, we haven’t had any competitions with other colleges but we will be planning on having one in October. We have yet to decide who we’ll be playing against but we’ll find out in the upcoming weeks.

AHO Men’s Rugby started

off their season last Saturday with a few 7's scrimmages against UNCG. Many new players got to participate in the matches, and it was a fantastic learning opportunity for new and returning players. Two major 7's tournaments are on the horizon for AHO, with the SoCon 7's tournament taking place on September 22nd in Wilmington and the ACRL Series 7's taking place on September 29th in Greensboro. These tournaments are a huge opportunity, and we hope for a successful finish to our 7's season. This October, AHO will be holding the annual Rucktoberfest tournament, which is sure to be a huge event. We hope that many App fans and families will be out to watch the largest rugby tournament in the Southeast!

As we patiently wait for snow, the

Snowboarding

team can only do so much. While our season is still a few months away our team has been focusing on reaching out to possible new members and possibly even plan a preseason trip to the Liberty Snowflex for some good old fashion carpet boarding. The snowboard team remains stoked about our up coming season and just wants to say “Keep it steezy Appalachian State!”

Practices have been going awesome! We have had a great turnout and so far they are continuing to come to practices. There is about twice the amount of freshman as returners. The team is now in full gear getting ready for our first meet at UGA coming up in a month. The officers are hard at work planning and getting all the details set for the home meet late October. So far it has been a good start for this season!

Women's Lacrosse

The Appalachian State Women’s Club Lacrosse team took on the wilderness last weekend and had a blast. The girls headed to New River State Park on

Friday afternoon and successfully (but slowly) put together enough tents and hammocks for the group of 20. Burgers and hotdogs were grilled, marshmallows were roasted, and ghost stories and laughs were exchanged. “The camping trip allowed our new players to bond with our returning players and being away from the distractions of college life encouraged players to really connect with each other,” Treasurer, Emily Ayotte said. Practice this week continued to improve. The girls learned plays and focused on the fundamentals of attack and defense. High Point, NC State, and Radford will travel to Appalachian for a day tournament on Sunday, September 30. Come to State Farm Fields to support the Women’s Lacrosse Team!

Executive’s Corner

a word from our executives... Club Sports is starting the 20122013 academic year on a high note.

Teams are organized and competitions are underway, and all of the Execs. are finding their stride in the office. We are staying busy/planning out events and improvements to make the program better for everyone. Club Sports Council has had a full agenda and has done a great job forming the most committees we have ever had. It should definitely be a productive year and I am excited to see what it brings.
