Women’s Soccer is thrilled with the success that all of their hard work has earned them so far this season! They had their first home games last Sunday against UNCG and Radford and came out victorious in both matches. The team has a current record of 3-1-0 and is heading to Virginia Tech this weekend to play in the Hokie Classic. While in Blacksburg, they will face-off against some of the most competitive and top-ranked teams on the east coast. The girls also received exciting news about their current ranking in the entire SCSA League (Southeast Collegiate Soccer Alliance) --1st in their division and 3rd in the entire league! This being said, the goal of getting bids to both regionals and nationals this year is not far out of reach.

Fencing Club has had a wonderful start so far this semester. We have a great group of dedicated new fencers that have been working hard and showing significant progress, in addition to our veteran members who continue to show their skill. The newer fencers are excelling in their training, learning the footwork and bladework of fencing, and learning how to judge bouts and call actions. They have already had several practices of actual bouting, and they demonstrate their competence while on the strip. The older members are also sharpening their skills as we continue to practice. The Yosef Open, the home tournament we host annually, looms on the horizon a month away. In the coming weeks, Fencing Club plans to hold a mock tournament amongst ourselves as training for the real deal in late October. Fencers both new and experienced plan to compete, so our training continues with as much excitement as ever!

Fencing The Women’s Lacrosse Team officers traveled to Philadelphia this weekend to attend the Mid Atlantic Women’s Lacrosse League Conference (MAWLL). The meeting, held at Rowan University, New Jersey, was very informative about new rules in the league and new additions to specific regions; the officers learned that Appalachian State’s region has expanded to seven teams rather than the previous four. This year, Appalachian will be competing with East Carolina University, NC State, Radford University, Elon, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke for the regional title. While this enlarged conference brings more competition to the table, our Appalachian team is ready to take on the challenge. Lizzy (President), Anna (VP), Emily (Treasurer) and Alexis (Secretary) enjoyed a weekend exploring Philadelphia and even took a trip to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ. The team is preparing for their home games on Sunday, September 30th versus Radford, NC State and High Point University. Come out to State Farm Fields and cheer on this promising team!
Anna Norwood, President
The Men’s Club Lacrosse team started their season off strong this past weekend with a their win against High Point University. The team played well in the first quarter and fourth quarter ending the game with a score of 10 to 7. This win feels great for the team because it was the first game of the year and because of the unexpected loss we suffered last year to High Point. This win has shown the coaches and players the potential that this team has and has motivated them all to make this the best season that the Men’s Club Lacrosse team has had. With the next game far off the team is continuing their hard work during the week to keep their skills up to par.

8 The Equestrian Team is hard at work preparing to host the first Intercollegiate Dressage Show of the season this Sunday September 30 at Foothills Equestrian Center. We hope the “home court advantage” will be a confidence booster to start the season off right. Our dressage riders have been practicing hard and are ready to bring their “A” game. This past weekend, a few of the members volunteered at HC3 Boone Rodeo and had a blast! It was a much larger event than we expected with competitors and spectators coming from as far as Texas. It was the last qualifying rodeo of the season for the Junior Southern Rodeo Association so there were a lot of talented competitors and we enjoyed watching a side of our sport that we do not usually get to see! We have another big weekend next weekend as well. One of our coaches, Dana Dewey, is holding a clinic on Saturday with a focus on understanding how horses think and learn and what effect the rider has on those things as well as covering basic balanced position. It is pretty surprising how many upper level riders are lacking these fundamentals so it will be a great breakdown of skills to help solidify our horsemanship foundations. The clinic will include a classroom portion and a riding portion focusing on dressage basics and applying those basics to riding over fences. The Sunday immediately following the clinic we will be sending our Hunt Seat Team to compete at their first show of the season at Virginia Tech. We cannot wait toget our riders in the arena and represent Appalachian State University with pride!

The Cycling Team had a small team travel to Virginia Commonwealth/ William & Mary to race last weekend and everyone had a blast. The racers described the course as the most fun they have had this season. We had many top 5 finishes with Derek Whitescarver, our President, Winning both XC races and the Short Track! After this weekend we are leading the conference over NC State and Virginia Tech. Next weekend, we are traveling to VT for our final race weekend before Conference Championships.

team participated in their first tournament of the year two weekends ago at Wake Forest. We had three games against Duke, UNC, and Wake Forest, all of whom proved to be tough competitors. This tournament served as a great learning experience for our team and we really noticed some strong improvements. We put our new offense into action and with a few more practices and scrimmages we should have it perfected. It was obvious after our first few games that our new team members are fitting in nicely and really contributing on the court. We’re continuing to build our team chemistry on the court and we’re getting better and better!

Executive’s Corner
a word from our executives... We are well on our way into the Fall 2012 season now. Many of our teams are competing and traveling each weekend. Club Sports Council is tackling lots of important issues early on in the semester. These issues have included voting on teams and their tier system placements. With the more commitees than previous years, important work is being done at each Council meeting. The marketing and advertisement committee completed a banner to be entered into the homecoming competition, and the Council elected nominees for the homecoming court. We are excited about the involvement of the Council, and their enthusiasm towards the upcoming year. We have a lot of great things planned for the year, and as we finish up paperwork and MIC’s we are excited to begin our individual goals and projects. As we head further into the Fall 2012 semester, great things are sure to come.
