ATELIER PRO housing subtly fitted in dune garden Atelier PRO is an international operating architectural firm where professionals are actively engaged in architecture, urban development and interior design. Our home base is a special dune garden in The Hague, the Netherlands. This location reflects who we are, as it represents how much we value the genius loci. From the very beginning, a contextual approach to architecture has been our motive, and it still is. Starting from these principles, atelier PRO creates surprising and pioneering architecture with a strong social engagement.

RENOVATION AND INTERIOR TOWER C a new interior for outdated office floor Completed in 2005, the Prinsenhof is a metropolitan, multipurpose building located in het Beatrixkwartier, The Hague. Ten years after the completion the original tenants left, relocated or downsized. Owner Bouwinvest and property manager CBRE commissioned atelier PRO to completely transform one vacant office floor in Tower C in one season, within a specified budget. The aim of the transformation was to create a modern ‘floor model’ in order to show contemporary companies how this modern space can be used. TOWN HALL BRONCKHORST an exceptionally durable and energy efficient town hall Town Hall Bronckhorst is the result of joining about forty villages and communities to become one of the greatest rural towns in the Netherlands. The town hall houses office units, meeting rooms, a public reception desk and a council chamber. The design is particularly special as the town hall was the first building ever for which passive building techniques have been used in public utilities building. With a very energy efficient building as a result.

MEANDER MEDICAL CENTRE a hospital where it’s easy to find your way With a gross floor area (GFA) of 112,000 m², the Meander Medical Centre is a large-scale care institution. When the human scale and smallest needs are ignored, such a building can quite easily end up becoming a medical machine. Within the scope of recovery and peace, atelier PRO has designed a medical centre, in which a humane surrounding has been created that keeps close contact to the ecological values of the surrounding green Eemscheg environment.

REGIONAL OFFICES ENEXIS energy neutral building With the realization of three new regional offices with working accommodations, in Zwolle, Venlo and Maastricht, Enexis is entering a new era as a transmission system operator; an era, in which the development of an intelligent electricity grid coincides with the building of energy-neutral housing. Due to a green lung and a modular construction system that can be disassembled, the buildings meet the very high sustainability demands. The offices are certified with BREEAM Excellent score; the first time ever in the Netherlands.

DIAGNOSTICS CENTRE VUMC sustainable and flexible The Diagnostics Centre of the VUmc Amsterdam is a 21,000 m2 (first phase) laboratory located on the Van Der Boechorststraat. This new build forms part of a larger, future extension on the south side of the existing VUmc complex in Amsterdam Zuid. In atelier PRO‘s design, the combination of a healing environment with sustainability and flexibility has been strongly emphasised. The building contains two atriums that function as ‘green lungs’, providing light, air and space far inside the building.

The cube-shaped building stands on a plinth containing parking and other facilities. Inside is a huge atrium with trees around which all the rooms are located. From the Workspaces there is a view to the outside, but the sunlight is kept out as much as possible. The atrium has a partially open roof and large windows to the city. As a result, there is a filtered sunlight throughout the building. The facade is subject of study. HEADQUARTERS IKK SÜD-WEST strive for Saarland’s sustainable building Building complex with a total of 16,500 m² office, support functions, a customer center and underground parking for 150 cars. Atelier PRO’s design shows a maximum of response to the qualities of the area, and to the posed preconditions such as maximum heights, pipeline routes and noise pollution by railway and roads. Due to this, an extraordinary, sculptural building volume has been created around two central atriums, which presents itself differently to the centre’s approaching roads, to the various railways, and on the Europa allee, the area’s central access road. In the design, we have focussed on a well-balanced coherence between functional, constructional, perceptional and social qualities.

Besides a library, several community facilities and a sports centre, the complex accommodates two primary schools, a childcare centre, playgroup and municipal health service (GGD), and a residential complex of 23 apartments. The shape of this location is rather whimsical, and the complex responds to this shape by means of randomness and plasticity. The building cannot be surveyed at a single glance, due to the angular rotations, overhangs and variety in surfaces. The facade of the Statie is made of black horizontal wood siding. Wide white framed windows alternate with narrow vertical windows

GERRIT RIETVELD COLLEGE a wheel as basic design for a dynamic building The Gerrit Rietveld College is a secondary school for about 1200 students. The building also contains sports facilities and some social and commercial facilities for the neighbourhood. The new building is situated in the leafy district of Tuindorp, at the eastern side of Utrecht. The basic shape of the design is a ‘continuous wheel’, with in the centre an inner courtyard. The wheel is the ideal form to facilitate flexibility in the school, as functions ‘revolve’ around the central meeting point. The court is also connected with the schoolyard and a roof garden terrace.

NURSING CENTRE WILLIBRORD an innovative and flexible interior In Middelburg’s old city centre, the Stichting Werkt voor Ouderen (working for the elderly association) has build a new nursing centre called Sint Willibrord. The centre houses 62 inhabitants and has a flexible lay-out which can be adjusted according to changing requirements. Atelier PRO designed the fittings of the central plaza, the meeting room with brasserie, the living rooms of the group houses and two types of houses: 39 apartments in which somatic care can be provided and 5 group houses for psychogeriatric patients. The building of this project started in the autumn of 2012 and is completed at the end of 2013.

INTERIOR OF TOWN HALL QUARTER ‘the new world of waiting’ beside ‘the new world of working’

Atelier PRO architects have been selected out of 4 submissions to create the interior design for the new Town Hall Quarter in Deventer. The Deventer municipality has opted for flexibility, sustainability, cooperation and interaction as the major basic principles for this interior. The plan partly entails new build (about 15,500 m² Gross Floor Area (GFA)) and partly renovation, restoration and preservation of existing national monuments (about 3,500 m² GFA).

In addition, the public task will be focussed on the future, based on the vision ’The municipality has the answer’. A counter for the citizen. These developments not only have their consequences for the zoning of the building, the design and the furniture, but also for the culture of the municipality.

BOSBADHAL, EMMELOORD old and new centrally located multipurpose sports cluster Atelier PRO designed the new sports complex Bosbadhal in Emmeloord with an outspoken, sporty character, bringing cohesion between the outdated sports centre and swimming pool with several new functions. New additions include a large sports centre and lobby, the latter bringing structure to the various sports facilities. The most important intervention was to provide the old sports centre and new additions with one continuous faรงade, thereby connecting the mismatching facades and outdated architecture. In this way, the separate buildings become transformed into one sculpture.

WATERLANDPLEIN uniform plinth creates unity and coherence The old Waterlandplein in North Amsterdam will be given a completely new look. Atelier PRO has been asked to design the plinth course and one of the residential towers, as well as the community centre, the health care centre, the car parks and the green roofs, which have been given various interpretations due to their deviating position and function. Three existing residential towers are integrated in the plan and renovated by Hans van Heeswijk. The five other towers were designed by the Architecten Cie.

PLEINCOLLEGE a play between old and new Atelier PRO is responsible for the restoration of the Pleincollege Aloysius/de Roosten and the new extension on the eastside of the ring road. The latter will function as the new accommodation for the Pleincollege and a sports program. Although the schools will share some rooms, the identity of both schools is without dispute. Both have their own square and entrance area, adjacent to the new building part. Much inspiration was drawn from the original location of the former VMBO, dating from the fifties. The high-rise existing central building, with its powerful historic appearance, will remain responsible for the interaction with the neighbourhood and city.

POLICE ACADEMY APELDOORN winner Gulden Feniks 2011 The rehousing of the Police Academy’s Group Location consists of the restoration and renovation of a former preparatory seminary dating from 1935 (national monument, architect Jan van Hardeveld). The new addition accommodates the fixed and free design of an open learning centre according to ‘The new world of working’, a restaurant and congress divisions. The surrounding area has been re-organized with a new parking facility and has been designed in cooperation with landscape architects.

EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTIONS UVA spatial intervention in historic surroundings

The library building of the Extraordinary Collection of the University of Amsterdam on the Oude Turfmarkt forms an entrance gateway to a unique collection, which contains one of the centres of medieval literature. The complex is a listed building and is a part of the historical canal-side facade. Research on the development of the historical facade played a role in the concept forming for this library. Despite strict building requirements, atelier PRO saw chance to fit the hefty program in the ancient structures. This design is a breakthrough in a decayed nineteenthcentury building, an existing courtyard could be covered and now serves as an ‘inner street’. Within the very complex context a clear structure has arisen.

ACADEMY BUILDING LEIDEN UNIVERSITY the oldest building and the centre of Leiden University The Academy Building is the most representative ceremonial building of the Leiden University. In addition to the complete restoration and renovation of this national monument, a few new alterations have been executed. For instance, the routing has been improved with a new stairwell and lift, and a roof has been placed over the inner courtyard. New facilities have been given their own site and the interior has gained a new style that does justice to the monument and the University’s ambitions.

DANCE AND MUSIC ACADEMY FACTORIUM the artistic living room of Tilburg Factorium offers art education, art production and performing arts, for children and all other ages. Together with Fontys, Tilburg Theatres and the Public Library it forms ‘Tilburg’s Culture district’. To make use of all the building’s potentials, cooperation is an additional factor for Factorium. A large, centrally situated and multifunctional foyer has been designed to create an experimental free-zone, where small-scale or spontaneous events can take place. It is located as an extended central entrance, and forms a perfect characteristic for Factorium. In addition, the building contains a music wing and a more enclosed dance wing, and in between these two, lies a large auditorium for multifunctional use. SLIMHUS co-creation, work to measure, flexible, In search of inner-city spots and pert citizens Slimhus is meant for people who love to live in the city and do not want high mortgages, but do want the advantages of designing their own house. Thanks to an elaborated wood and concrete system, division and facades can be adjusted according to your own perception. The basic accommodation is 2 storeys high and 3.9 meter wide, but the house can be expanded in accordance with your wishes. The house has been designed to guarantee that it can be built easily and relatively quickly on small or narrow city centre locations. For more information: www.slimhus.nl
