a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas everyone and welcome to our final edition for 2023. I love Christmas ... the decorations, the Chrismas tree, the holidays and of course, the food. It’s the only time of the year you are allowed to put on those few extra kilos and get away with it. Our artists have been busy once again with exhibitions and competitions; congratulations to all involved. Andrew has given us another Photoshop tutorial and this month it’s all about re-shaping the radial gradiant. Our Featured Artist this month is one of our newer members, Marina Hobbs. Marina is no newcomer though to the photographic world; she is an extremely talented and successful photographer and has settled in nicely within our group. I hope you all welcome Marina. This month Maureen would like to introduce you to a few of our newest members of Artists Down Under. I hope you take the time to read all about them and to enjoy their amazing artwork. The ladies from the Redlands Digital group have put together another in their “Chinese Whispers” series, this month getting right into the Christmas spirit. I hope you all enjoy. The monthly artists challenge was of course set as a Christmas theme. Enjoy what they have put together for you. Well that’s it from me for this month. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Stay safe on the roads during this silly season, take care of each other and look out for those less fortunate around you.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION RE-SHAPING THE RADIAL GRADIENT By Andrew Haysom
Adobe have made another small change to the Gradient Tool that I really like. When using the new Gradient Tool, and with the Radial Gradient selected, you’ll notice that there is another little white circular dot icon on the edge of the circle of the on-screen control (see Figure 1).
[Fig 1 – Re-shaping the Radial Gradient]
Clicking and dragging this dot icon allows you to “squash” the radial gradient from a circle into an ellipse of any width, dragging in the opposite direction will take the gradient back into a circular shape. Figure 2 shows a radial gradient that has been re-shaped into an ellipse. Click and drag the outer edge (line) of the circle to rotate or resize the gradient. Click and drag the centre icon to reposition the gradient. I find this little change very useful when using the radial gradient for various lighting effects, I hope you do too. Meet your artist MARINA HOBBS Gladstone Central QLD
44
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live? My home is in Gladstone, Central Queensland, a sunny part of Australia, though I grew up in Melbourne, in the bayside suburb of Mentone. I studied to become a Secondary Textile and Tourism teacher, which covered most of my main interests. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have been interested in photography for most of my life, my father being a strong influence as he loved making movies of his large brood. Travel photography became a great interest, recording our lives and adventures, living in China and Singapore in the early Eighties. I completed a Diploma in Photography, which introduced me to Photoshop Elements in approximately 2008. Ever since I have continued to embrace both the technical skills and artistic opportunities offered by Photoshop. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My inspiration comes from travel, my experiences living overseas in a number of countries, yacht racing, and sailing which have been our main interests, and of course, now our grandchildren, who inspire me to create illustrated story books for them. I have completed five children’s books, which have certainly become wonderful projects for me and have driven much of my desire to improve my photo artistry. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I am very much project-driven in my approach. I set goals, plan, and begin projects with a concept and vision of the finished product. Flexibility is key, but as I continue to learn technically, there can be many revisions. What does your art mean to you? I love the creative process. Whether it’s a piece of machine embroidery, a digital storybook, a portrait, or editing a photograph, I enjoy each stage. I am drawn to strong subjects and projects that challenge both my technical skills and artistic limits. Lifelong learning is certainly very much a part of my life. I find great satisfaction in knowing I have advanced artistically and technically with each piece I complete. Do you think since starting in photo artistry it has changed you and if so, how? The discovery of Photoartistry has enabled me to explore beyond my own ‘organic’ artistic abilities. I was the student the Art teacher gave up on! Photoshop has gifted me with a future of continued learning and entry into a wonderful creative community of artists. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I draw inspiration from every piece of artwork I see, from new experiences, our environment, and family.

2023 NEW MEMBERS ARTISTS DOWN UNDER By Maureen Maxwell
We have had several new members join us during this year. It is always wonderful to see fresh faces who bring their own interests, skills and art to our group and to our magazine. Ultimately, this makes our group more diverse and inspirational. As the year draws to a close, we asked all new members, who wished to participate, to write a paragraph or two about themselves, and to talk a little about their plans for their adventure in Photo Artistry. We also asked them to send a favourite image. I would like to thank the following people who responded. - Sandy McCleary - Jenny Davisdon - Alison Meier - Deborah Martin - Ailene Cuthbertson

SANDY MCCLEARY I’m semi-retired and my interest in photography took off when I got my first DSLR camera. I’ve stopped and started over the years since then, but the last few years has seen me get out and about a lot more with my camera, so much so that I very rarely go anywhere without a camera of some sorts with me. I’ve found that I like to take closeup photos of nature and was thinking what more can I do with my photos. All credit due to Judi Lapsley Millar for sparking off my journey into photo Artistry. This was a big learning curve for me as I’d never used layers before, and I found it quite addictive in being able to do and add so much more to my photos. I haven’t done a lot so far though, so I plan on exploring this a lot more with my photos.
Sandy McCleary

JENNY DAVIDSON I live in Orange in Central Western NSW. I have been interested in photography since I was a teenager. My background is in IT and I have worked and taught in that area for many years. When digital photography was in its infancy I learnt Photoshop, firstly as a means of enhancing my images. I became involved in what was classified as Creative Photography creating varying types of images, I went on to become an international judge in this field and have extended my teaching adding Photoshop and Photography. I still use all my own images photographing textures, backgrounds and creating brushes, since becoming part of the Photo Artistry community I am trying different things. I still can’t bring myself to use AI created elements but appreciate the work being done by the artists in this group who work with this content. The image I have included was put together with a rose from my garden, bits of landscape images I have taken, birds are my own image. I then painted my composition with the mixer brush. I did finish up with some textures from the Awake content. Thanks for all the encouragement your group offers.
Jenny Davidson

ALISON MEIER I have been photographing my environment and its objects for many years now and have gained an immense satisfaction from doing so. But some element was always missing and that was to give my images a truly painterly look. I recently stumbled on Jill Johnson’s Mixer Brush course through Sebastian Michaels’ website and although I had previously played a bit with it, I didn’t understand how it worked or how to use it. I recently took the course and have been wowed by the way this magic brush can completely transform my photographic images. Although I still use Photoshop purely as an image enhancing software, I am more and more drawn to the beauties and mysteries of actually painting. My next step will be learning how to draw a credible image and then transfer that to a painterly finish. This is a triptych made a few years ago from a series of images shot on the back interior wall of a Wellington coastal cafe, which is made of Corten steel. I am always fascinated by what a little digital tweaking can draw out of a simple image.
Alison Meier - The Secret Life Of Rust
55
DEBORAH MARTIN I am a New Zealand based photographer and printmaker, who lives in Matakana, Auckland. I am primarily inspired by the natural world, especially the stories told by our native birds. My aim is to advocate for New Zealand native birds through my work. Changing hearts and minds one human at a time, so that my photographs don’t become just a record of a growing list of extinct endemic bird species. A diverse range of my work has won awards at national and international photographic salons. Some of my bird images appear in conservation publications, calendars, exhibitions. Birds can be amazing teachers when we take the time to just quietly and respectfully observe them. “In camera capture” is the start of my creative process, not usually the destination. The artist in me endeavours to enhance a feeling, mood or discovery using post processing software, just like a painter uses all the tools at their disposal. So far, I have resisted the urge to introduce Ai into my posts processing, so all layers and parts of layers of my work are derived from images I have taken with my camera. My aim with photo artistry for 2024 is to start to post images I have been experimenting with this year that combine ICM and nature photography. Although I have been very quiet this year on the facebook page I have been inspired by the amazing creativity I have seen in ADU. Thanks so much for welcoming me into such a vibrant creative artistic community.
Deborah Martin - Then There Were None

AILENE CUTHBERTSON In the midst of rural Raglan, New Zealand, an artist named Ailene answers a call to adventure… to create art for modern-day romantics who want their home to feel as fantastic as their mind. Embarking on her wild creative journey, Ailene sets free her imaginary stories, worlds, and muses in the form of light-filled, painterly images. Can she inspire her fellow romantics to surround themselves with their own magic? Starring Ailene Cuthbertson (as herself), her trusty goat sidekicks (as themselves), the wonder of technology, and a generous dollop of imagination and magic, Old Mountain Art is a timeless cross-the-wall, storm-the-castle classic.
