Meet your artist Louise Smith Gympie, QLD Australia
Website :
50
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I was born in Gympie, Qld but left home for the big smoke of Brisbane when I was 18 to work for the Westpac Bank. After a career in banking I left to have my first of two children. Once the kids were a little older my husband and I started our own cleaning business on the Sunshine Coast but have now moved back to Gympie where we still do a little cleaning, but am enjoying a sort of semi retired life. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? My interest in Photo Artistry was sparked about 2-3 years ago after seeing an advert for Sebastian Michaels’ Photoshop Artistry course that was being promoted by another photographer that I was following at the time. I had joined a local camera club some years before and really enjoyed learning about my camera and taking photos but wanted to take things a step further. I had used mainly Lightroom to edit my images before so learning all about Photoshop was a big learning curve for me but I’m finding the process really interesting. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My inspiration comes from studying others and their wonderful work in our many online facebook groups for Sebastian’s courses. Pinterest is another great resource to get ideas. Songs, books, TV shows - there’s lots of areas. I like a lot of different genres of art so I’m just experimenting with different things to see what grabs me the most. So far they’re all equal. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? If I come up with an idea I like to search my own photos first to see if there is anything I could use. Even if it’s just one small element it’s good to know there is something of yours in the image. I then look through the endless course resources we have and if that’s not providing, then I’m on Pixabay or similar sites to try and find the right image or I’ll grab my camera or iPhone and photograph something around the house. What does your art mean to you? I used to be a creative child, always drawing. I loved it. But never thought i was good enough. We unfortunately didn’t have art classes as such at school, it was either the science route or secretarial studies. So I went the secretarial way, art went down the gurgler! Having this creative outlet now to express myself makes me very happy and fulfilled. I can’t imagine not doing it into the future. I love taking photos, I love editing them on the computer as it helps keep my brain active. It’s just very satisfying especially when a piece all comes together Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Yes definitely. I feel I’m a lot more confident in myself. I think that comes from the support that we get displaying our art on the various Facebook groups. Certainly happy and thankful that we can do that.
51
Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? There are some extremely talented artists in this world which you soon realise when you go searching on the web. I really like the work of an Australian artist, Alexia Sinclar. She is a fine art photographer and her type of style is something I would like to explore someday. But I also like college artist, Frank Moth. You can find their work on Instagram. Another genre i’d like to explore! Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I would love to have a gallery showing one day. Maybe a collaboraton with some other artists would be something I’d definitely look at and just to continue to produce art that I’m proud of and hopefully others find delight in.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SKY REPLACEMENT By Andrew Haysom
In the latest release of Photoshop (October 2020, Version 2021), Adobe have added an “automatic” sky replacement feature, playing catchup a little with products like Luminar that have had this for a little while. To access the feature, choose Sky Replacement from the Edit menu, you will be presented with the Sky Replacement dialog as shown in Figure 1. You must have a pixel layer active at the time of choosing the command. I’ll talk about the last option in this dialog first. For Output always choose New Layers as this will output a layer group that makes up the sky replacement which you can easily adjust later. The other option Duplicate Layer outputs a flattened version to a duplicate layer which is much harder to edit. Photoshop will churn for a few seconds while it generates the required masks and such, and then the current sky will be replaced into your image (as long as the Preview check box is ticked). [Figure 1 – Sky Replacement dialog]
[Figure 2 – Sky Picker]
64
Click the drop-down arrow next to the current sky thumbnail to activate the Sky Picker (see Figure 2).
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Here you can choose a different sky simply by clicking on it (again it will be shown in your image). You can add your own skies here using the New Sky icon at the bottom of the panel. You can also add a new Sky Group (folder) using the New Sky Group icon. You can move skies between folders simply by dragging and dropping them. Delete any unwanted skies using the Delete Sky icon. If you do not see any skies here initially, activate the panel menu and choose Append Default Skies. Click off the Sky Picker (i.e. click on the Sky Replacement dialog) to close the Sky Picker. The Shift Edge slider moves the sky up (negative) and down (positive) relative to the edge (or horizon) Photoshop has determined. Generally the default of zero (no movement) will work best. The Fade Edge slider will attempt to fade or feather the sky near the edge (or horizon) resulting in a feathered grey mask, rather than a sharp edge. In my experience, the masks created by this tool can be a bit feathered (or muddy) anyway. If you look at Figure 3 you can see an example of a mask (using an image with a building against the sky) showing the different masks created using the extreme values for Fade Edge. You’ll notice on this example that some areas of the edge are muddy even with the Fade Edge slider at zero.
[Figure 3 – Example masks with different Fade Edge values]
The Brightness and Temperature sliders allow you to modify the brightness and colour temperature of the sky. If you change either of these sliders from their defaults of zero (no change), an additional layer will be created in the layer group, these will be clipped to the Sky layer. For the Brightness, a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer is created, and for the Temperature, a Color Balance adjustment layer is created. Obviously these can be adjusted later if required. Move the scale slider to change the scale or size of the sky. Checking the Flip check-box with cause the sky to be flipped horizontally. You’ll always want to be conscious of where the light is coming from in the sky and make sure it matches the image. The foreground adjustments allow you to adjust the light/colour of the foreground in your image somewhat. These sliders simply set the opacities of the Foreground Lighting and Foreground Color layers in the layer group created. The adjustments only really change the parts of the foreground closer to the sky edge (horizon).

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) The Sky Replacement dialog offers four tools, the use of three of these is fairly self-explanatory, The Move Tool allows you to move the sky around (you may have to scale it up first to avoid the edges showing as you move it), the Hand Tool allows you to move your image window around and the Zoom Tool to zoom in an out. The scale, orientation and position of the sky can all be modified later using the Move/Transform tool on the Sky layer. Note that the mask on the Sky layer is already unlinked from the image so you don’t need to worry about it moving. The final tool, the Sky Brush allows you to paint in and out the sky. Here you are essentially painting with a black or white brush on the mask of the Sky layer, with a brush that has been put into Overlay mode for you. Overlay mode means that when painting “in” the sky (same as painting mask with white) you will only affect areas that are lighter than 50% grey, and when painting out the sky you will only affect areas that are darker than 50% grey). Obviously, this can also be done later, and is probably easier to do later once you have visually examined the mask. Figure 4 shows the Sky Replacement layer group that is created with the tool. Obviously you can also change it’s opacity to “tone down” the replaced sky if required.
[Figure 4 – Sky Replacement layer group]
Overall I think this tool does a good job, but not as good a job as doing the job totally manually with Luminosity Masks, but it is much quicker, and with some careful tweaking of the layers afterwards a very good result can be had.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
