a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand

“HAPPY NEW YEAR” to you all and welcome to another exciting year of outstanding art by our artist. I know that they are looking forward to creating for you. As we welcomed in 2022, we are all wishing for a more positive year than the last, for a lot of people I know they are glad to see the back of 2021. I am pleased to say that at least we are starting the year off on positive vibes for you from all of our artists, so sit back and enjoy this month’s jam packed edition of Artists Down Under. Even with Christmas last month, our artists didn’t slow down with their achievements and exhibitions, congratulations to you all on your successes. Chinese Whispers is back for another 12 months and the Redlands Digital Artists have put together another fun image for you to enjoy. I would like to introduce to you our Featured Artist for this month, Kaylene Helliwell. Kaylene is from Hamilton NZ. Kaylene is reasonably new with our group but her art is outstanding and is creating an amazing style as she progresses. I hope you enjoy her images as much as we do. Maureen Maxwell has kindly shared an interview she has recently done with one of our own artists, Karen Waalwyk. Karen’s talent is extraordinary and her travel adventures are exciting, I know you will love reading about her journey. Happy 50th edition to Andrew Haysom as he presents another one of our favourite segments of the Artists Down Under magazine - “Photoshop Tips”. Lastly our Monthly Artists Photo Challenge was set with a “Treehouse” theme, the images that our artist have sent in are amazing, I know you will love them. Well that’s it from me this month, I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under as much as I have putting it together for you. Stay Safe and take care of each other.

whats on Nightlife Zealandia Eco Sanctuary Zealandia Eco Sanctuary Visitors Centre Waiapu Road, Karori, Wellington, NZ 1st December 2021 to 31st January 2022 Featuring Judi Lapsley Miller

In her third solo exhibition at Zealandia EcoSanctuary, Judi explores what happens from dusk to dawn, when we might go to sleep, but the natural world bursts into life. She uses photo-artistic techniques to tell stories in a series of fanciful artworks from the real to the surreal. Most of the subjects in this exhibition were photographed at Zealandia - Judi’s home-away-from-home. Judi has long advocated for birds through writing, photography, and conservation fieldwork. Her step into wildlife advocacy through creative interpretation was a natural progression. Freed from the constraints of pure nature photography, she exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that engenders empathy with other living creatures.

INTERVIEW KAREN WAALWYK FACE OF EXTINCTION By Maureen Maxwell

Karen, thank you for agreeing to this interview for the Artists Down Under magazine about your recent series of images. Many ADU members have fond memories of your stories and images of your travels to places most of us only dream about. One story I recall with pleasure was your stay in a yurt in Mongolia. Your photos of the Mongolian Eagle Hunters are incredible. You are an intrepid traveller (COVID notwithstanding), and we look forward to hearing about your future adventures. Your recent series titled the ‘Faces of Extinction’ contains brilliant images. However, the series also brings home to us the serious nature of what is happening to our fauna around the world. We welcome this opportunity to delve a little deeper into the creation of this series. What inspired you to create a series of art works about the worldwide extinction of Fauna? I enjoy creating pieces that revolve around nature. One night, feeling a creative block I opened a kit I had purchased and started randomly putting elements together. This resulted in the ‘Face of Extinction – Rhino’. It struck me that the Rhino standing on a precipice was an example of how tenuous existence is. From there the series has evolved. Having a set of related images to work on gives me much more purpose and direction. It has also been educative researching animals facing extinction and I am expanding the series to include not just endangered species but also the vulnerable. I have completed 16 pieces thus far. What is your approach to the creation of a series of images about a particular topic? Does the topic come first, or does the topic grow from a few of your images? I would like to think I have forethought but no … I always seem to start with one piece. When it resonates with me, I consider how I can create complimentary pieces.

36

INTERVIEW - KAREN WAALWYK (CONT....) Other series I have done have revolved around a set of photos of the same subject such as my Draught Horse and Snow Leopard pieces – there is no story to these, I created them purely for the aesthetic. I am enjoying this current project as it has meaning. It naturally lends itself to creating more and more…. Although unfortunately due to the number of species at risk!

What processes do you use to achieve the final result? I tend to be fairly disorganised in my creations. I loosely throw a lot of layers together until I am happy with the overall concept. I will then go back layer by layer experiment with blend modes, do my extractions as needed, add extra elements and finesse with postproduction. In a series I will then use the base background as a starting point for my next piece and introduce some new textures and background elements as suited to achieve the colour and hue I want. Do you have any advice for our readers who may wish to tell a story using a series of images? The ‘Face of Extinction’ series is a project that has meaning for me. I think for any series where you want to tell a story that is key.

37

INTERVIEW - KAREN WAALWYK (CONT....) What was your inspiration to push your photography further by studying Photo Artistry? It really happened by accident. I stumbled across Sebastian Michaels’ Photoshop Artistry course when I was researching courses to learn more about editing. I watched his promo giving an example of compositing and was immediately hooked. Learning these techniques pushed me to improve my photography as I endeavour to use my own photos as the main subject where possible.

INTERVIEW - KAREN WAALWYK (CONT....) Can you give us a little background about yourself? What inspired you to travel and experience other cultures in remote parts of our world? I had dreams of travel from reading novels as a teenager and they always seemed to be set in ‘exotic’ locations. It was not though until my youngest started school, and I returned to full time work that I was able to start saving. A year later we had our first amazing holiday to the Gold Coast. After that I decided to budget on an annual holiday. I took a second job to enable this and started a dedicated holiday fund. Our second holiday was to Bali and on returning I visited the travel agent to thank her. There I saw a brochure for Nepal and my next adventure. That was my introduction to trekking and from there I was hooked. I find trekking to be particularly cathartic. A time for contemplation and reassessing my life and values. It is also often the only means of visiting certain areas. Travelling to developing countries renews my appreciation for what I have and our opportunities. I have been fortunate to be able to take both my kids to some amazing places. My trips tend to revolve around three themes – trekking, diving and wildlife. I am always looking for somewhere ‘less travelled’ or for a unique experience.

Your adventures are not for people looking for an easy way to travel, can you tell us how you go about planning your travels? Research! And more research! I am happy for basic accommodation and travel arrangements. Once I decide on a destination, I will look for a local tour company or guide (depending on the type of trip) and ask for recommendations for a different experience. I like to travel independently where possible and I find this often opens opportunities otherwise not available such as homestays. It also allows for me to make changes along the way, so if I want to spend more time somewhere I can or move on. What’s next Karen? Covid has been an interesting time. It has made me reassess the importance of taking advantage of opportunities as they arise. So, what’s next?? The hard question is ‘how to decide’! Certainly, Antarctica is high on the bucket list but also seeking jaguars in the Pantanal and Snow Leopards in the Himalayas. I had to cancel a dive trip in Asia and a wildlife trip in India, with the focus on seeing tigers, in 2020 so both are still on my radar. So, I’m not sure what is next, but looking forward to it! There is such a great world out there to explore and experience.

Meet your artist KAYLENE HELLIWELL Hamilton New Zealand

60

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Hamilton NZ. I am married with 3 adult children. I love photography and have 8 cats. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? In Facebook I noticed an ad for Photoshop Artistry and thought I’d give it a go. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art ? Seeing other artists work in AWAKE, Deviant Art, on the internet. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I get an idea, scribble it in my artbook and grow it from there. What does your art mean to you? I didn’t think I was arty so every piece I make is special & I feel a little sad when the muse takes a rest or my skill set is not up to the project! Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? It has opened new doors in expressing myself I would have never thought possible. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? Artists anywhere!! They’re all amazing!! But I do really like the work of Lisa Aisato. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? No great plans, maybe sell some pieces, just enjoying creating. Really want to learn new skills such as painting.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION THE HIDDEN POWER OF ADOBE PHOTOSHOP By Andrew Haysom

(BOOK REVIEW)

As this is my 50th Photoshop article for Artists Down Under magazine I decided for this article I would, in some way, revisit where it all started. Although it wasn’t my first article for the magazine, the first of my Photoshop articles appeared in Issue 9, in December 2017. It was titled “Some Photoshop Inspiration” and was a bit of a homage to two people who have taught me a lot and inspired me a lot with my art. One of those was Scott Valentine. I first came upon Scott’s work as a part of my subscription to Scott Kelby’s learning web site, Kelby One. I have subscribed to several learning sites over the time I’ve used Photoshop, but the only one that I have kept paying for all these years is Kelby One. Their monthly Photoshop User magazine is one of the key attractions for me, it is easily the best magazine of its type I have ever seen (it now covers Photoshop and Lightroom, after the two Kelby magazines were combined some time ago). My favourite column in the magazine, and the first one I read each month, is Scott Valentine’s “Photoshop Proving Ground”. Scott’s biography in the Contributors column of the magazine reads as follows; “Scott Valentine blends his education in physics with his love for art, bringing a unique voice to teaching through experimentation. His Hidden Power books are used in colleges across the US. He wants you to never let your tools get in the way of your art.” Scott is one of the few Photoshop teachers I’ve come across who delves very deeply into subjects, teaching how things work as well as telling you what they do, and as his biography suggests, his writing encourages experimentation, he often uses techniques I would never have thought of, and uses tools for things I’ve never seen them used for before. This sort of material is ideal for someone like me who just loves playing in Photoshop. Scott’s first two books were mentioned in my article back in 2017, they are “The Hidden Power of Blend Modes in Adobe Photoshop (ISBN 13: 978-0-321-82376-2)” and “The Hidden Power of Adjustment Layers in Adobe Photoshop (ISBN 13: 978-0-321-95771-9)”. These are books I’ve owned for years and they have always been my favourite Photoshop books ever since I first bought them.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) When I received an email from Peachpit about Scott’s latest book, “The Hidden Power of Adobe Photoshop – Mastering Blend Modes and Adjustment Layers for Photographers”, the first question that came to my mind was wondering how much of the content in the new book was from the earlier two. So I messaged Scott and asked him, his response was as follows: ... “The new book is about 50% new material, with the other 50% being updates that are more specifically focused on photography. For example, I still spend time talking about curves, but I have new examples that help make the concepts more solid and applicable to adjusting photos. I’ve also tried to be more conversational than the last two books. I previously tried constraining each entry to a specific format, so wanted to stretch out a little. Hopefully even the material you already know will be presented in a way that gives you something new to think about.” That was good enough for me, I bought it, and this article is my book review of the new book (see Figure 1).

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) The book is presented in four sections. The first is a 50-page introduction that is split across two sub-sections. The first lays out Scott’s aim “to familiarise the reader with the fundamental operation of Photoshop adjustment layers and blending modes, and to help see them from both a creative and problem-solving perspective” and discusses “how photoshop sees” our images as data. A large part of this section gives some great explanation about Curves adjustment layers and how they work. This is followed by introductory discussion of some Photoshop basics like the fundamentals of layer operations, masking, clipping masks, channels, blending modes and Blend If. Don’t be fooled though there’s a ton of useful stuff in the introduction alone. The second section of the book is a 160-page section called Techniques. It is split into five subsections called “Selections and Masking”, “Dodge and Burn”, “Colour and Value”, “Helper Layers” and “Effects”. Each of these are delved into quite deeply and you will be introduced to things you will never have thought of doing and given a better understanding of many concepts. Perhaps my favourite of these was “Colour and Value”, it includes a lot of details on colour grading, Hue/Saturation adjustments, and the most detailed explanation of, and fun with, Gradient Maps. Then onto Colour Lookup Tables, colour replacement and colour matching (including a great way to use curves to colour match one image to another). Then Gradient Zone Control, using gradient maps to control luminosity zones. Then some great thoughts on black and white conversion methods. The “Effects” section shows detailed methods with lots of options for using adjustment layers and blend modes for creating the Orton Effect, adding Rain and Atmosphere and two artistic portraiture techniques called Stamp Portrait and Dissolve Portrait. The third section of the book is called “Projects” and covers the next 46 pages. This is split into four sub-sections, “Creating the Workbench Files”, “Basic Portrait Retouching”, “Rembrandt Portrait” and “Frequency Separation”. The workbench files referred to are files used throughout the book to demonstrate how the various blending modes and adjustment layers interact with different gradients and colours. I found it fun and educational to build these and play, rather than just reading the book (see Figure 2).

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) The fourth and final section of the book covers 81 pages and begins with a sub-section on Adjustment Layers, where every Photoshop Adjustment Layer is described in some detail. This is followed by a sub-section that begins with a discussion of Blend Mode basics, Opacity and Fill and Blend Mode Maths, then goes through every different Blend Mode in detail. This is a very complete, and very detailed book. I can truthfully say that I loved it, and like Scott’s other two books I know I will continue to love it and will refer to it repeatedly. I have purchased them all as e-books, and I download them as PDFs, and they sit in a folder on my desktop. They are all the sort of books that I use in two ways. Firstly to “look stuff up”, and secondly just to read a chapter every now and then. There is no question that the books (all three of them, not just the new one) are aimed at intermediate to advanced Photoshop users. I think that is one of the reasons I love them, there are so many Photoshop books out there that are just “click here, do this” type of books, whereas these, in my opinion delve more deeply, and give you a deeper understanding of how things work. For me, that is greatly helpful. So, my recommendation is, if you think you’re like me and you like that deeper understanding, and you like to tinker in Photoshop, and maybe you’re a bit of a nerd, then I think you’ll love this book, and I recommend it highly to you. If you’re not, you may not enjoy it so much, but I think it’s still worth a look, you will learn something from this book. If you’re still a bit of a Photoshop novice then it perhaps could be a little daunting, and might be something to consider a little later in your Photoshop journey. I purchased the book at Peachpit (https://www.peachpit.com/), and if you search there you will see that there is a downloadable PDF of sample content from the book. It is 66 pages and includes the entire table of contents, index and over forty pages of content. Checking this out may help guide your purchasing decision.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis

Art

by Margaret Kalms

50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
