a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Welcome to the July edition of Artists Down Under. As we enter into our second month of winter and more Covid lockdowns, most people go into a state of hibernation, but not our artists, they go into a state of creation. This month they have again provided for you more amazing art that I know is sure to please everyone’s palette. Our Featured Artist this month is the very talented Christina Brunton. Christina has many years of exhibitions, successful competitions, travel and fun creative photo shoots. I know you will all love her work. Photoshop is for ever changing and we are very lucky to have one of our amazing artists Andrew Haysom, to not only share his art, but also to keep on top of all of the new changes. He has kindly put together another article of his awesome tips for you, this month on the new way to “Save A Copy”. Redlands Digital Group have another of their images to share in their Chinese Whispers series. This month in our MonthIy Digital Photographic Competition, I asked the artists to take something from their backyard and create an image for you. You will love what they have come up with. I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under. Stay safe and take care of each other. Pam

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SAVE A COPY By Andrew Haysom
With version 22.4.1 of Photoshop, released in May 2021, Adobe made some changes to the way the File Save options work. A new Save a Copy menu command was added (see Figure 1) and existing commands File Save and File Save As xommands were changed to only allow you to choose file types that support the format of the file you are working on.
For example, if you have a file with layers, then only certain file types like Photoshop (PSD), Photoshop Large Document Format (PSB) and TIFF will support layers, so only these file types will be presented to you when you choose the File Save As command (see Figure 2).
[Figure 1 – File menu]
[Figure 2 – File Save As dialog]
38
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) The basic File Save command will just save your current file, overwriting the contents on your disk. However if you have made changes to the file that mean it is no longer supported by the file type (e.g. you opened a JPG file but have added layers), then when you choose File Save, the File Save As dialog will be presented instead. If you wish to save your image as a file type that does not support the file content (e.g. JPG), then you can either choose the File Save a Copy command from the menu directly or press the Save a Copy button that is found in the File Save As dialog box. When the Save a Copy dialog is presented, all file type options are available (see Figure 3).
[Figure 3 – File Save a Copy dialog]
Choosing Save a Copy will automatically append the word “copy” to your file name, but obviously this can be changed in the dialog box if required.
One file attribute that can be a bit tricky is the Image Mode (i.e. usually 8-bit or 16-bit), see Figure 4. If the file is 16-bit, then your file types will be limited if you choose File Save As to only those types that support 16-bit (JPG files are only 8-bit, so JPG will not be an option). If like me you have your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) settings to open all JPG files and you have your ACR defaults set to pass a 16-bit file to Photoshop, then even opening a JPG file and making no changes in Photoshop will mean you have to choose Save a Copy in order to save the file back as a JPG.
[Figure 4 – Image Mode menu]
39
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
Anyway, when I think about it, I believe these changes do sort of make some sense, but the change has confused a lot of people. Adobe did receive a lot of negative feedback and shortly after released another update (22.4.2) which allows you to revert to the old File Save As behaviour with a change in the Photoshop preferences. Choose Preferences / File Handling and the screen shown in Figure 5 will be displayed. You’ll notice two new options; - Enable legacy “Save As” and - Do not append “copy” to filename when saving a copy
[Figure 5 – Photoshop File Handling Preferences]
Note that if you do enable the old behaviour, it is not exactly the same in that it does not append the word “copy” any more which could make it much easier to overwrite old files unintentionally. You are warned about this when making the preference change. If in doubt, just choose Save a Copy.
Andrew

Meet your artist Christina Brunton Sydney, NSW Australia
Website : https://christinabrunton.art/ https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artists-1/christina-brunton/
62
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Christina and I live in Sydney, Australia. I came to Australia from New Zealand fifty years ago, so class myself as a ‘true blue Aussie’. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? Twenty years ago I learnt how to paint and later I started photography as a way to capture images as a reference for my oil paintings, but work commitments made it hard to find the time to paint. The idea was to take photos of beautiful scenes I saw whilst travelling and later paint them once I had time. I never went back to my oil painting, as photography had taken over. It wasn’t until I discovered Sebastian Michaels’ course on Photoshop Artistry and how photographs could be made into works of art that I was able to merge my passions of painting and photography. It has been a wonderful journey learning new skills and I never want to stop learning. My art generally starts with a theme and often involves a photoshoot. The chosen photo or photos are then enhanced digitally. Creating art work is a way of life that sings to me. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? The inspiration comes from viewing our art community’s art via their social media pages and viewing the Artists Down Under magazines and the Living the Photo Artistic Life magazines. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I see myself as an image maker, where I plan my photoshoots and what I want to create. I use a two step process for my artistry taking photos and then enhancing through digital artistry. My process for any photoshoot is firstly to choose the theme and then everything else follows from this choice, such as which model for the shoot, what wardrobe and props, whether it is an indoor or outdoor setting and what needs to be included. The second part of the process is the digital artistry. What does your art mean to you? Doing art to me is like a meditation, I get so focussed on it that time passes by without noticing. I get such a lot of pleasure from art. I love working with a theme in mind, a series that I am passionate about. I call them Projects of Passion. These series often end up becoming an exhibition and this year I have had an exhibition nearly every month. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Most definitely, my art has changed how I approach every day. I learned to say no to things I don’t want to do. My priorities have changed. I still love spending time with my family, the next favourite of mine is my art and sharing it with my family and friends. I decluttered my life, my emails and my social media activities. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I draw inspiration from our art community (the Artists Down Under family and the Awake/Kaizen family). To name a couple of people who I get a lot of inspiration from are Cheryl Parris and Ilona Abou –Zolof. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? Continue to follow my heart, enjoy my art, keep learning new things and create art daily.

These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
