a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Hello everyone & welcome to the June edition of our fabulous magazine Artists Down Under. Isn’t art wonderful, there are so many different forms and styles, something for everyone. That is one of the best things I love about presenting this magazine each and every month to you, we have so many talented artists with so many different syles. It never gets boring when they submit all their amazing images and I classify myself so lucky to belong to this awesome group, and I get to view them all and present them to you. An artists mind is a strange but wonderful thing, they have the ability to look at things and to turn it into a story, change a bit there, add a bit here ... lol, sounds easy doesn’t it ... I wish. This month I would like to introduce to you our Featured Artist, Ilona Abou-Zolof. Ilona is a very talented and creative artist and I know you will love what she has for you all. One of my favourite segments in this magazine is from Andrew Haysom, he has another wonderful and very helpful Photoshop tip for you all to try out. Dean Hohn has shared a very personal Do’s and Dont’s on shooting Still Life Photography, one that will make you both smile and cringe all at the same time, definitely a must read, and another image from the Redlands Digital Group in their Chinese Whispers series. I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under. Stay safe and take care of each other. Pam

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION REFERENCE POINT By Andrew Haysom
When you use the Edit / Transform command you will see a bounding box appear around the object you are transforming. This will have a small square handle at each corner, and in the middle of each edge, that you can drag with the mouse to scale or transform the object. The subject of this article is the Reference Point, that by default appears in the centre of the bounding box and looks like a small target (see Figure 1).
[Figure 1 – Bounding Box and Reference Point]
In later versions of Photoshop the reference point does not show by default. There are two ways you can turn it on so it displays. When you are in Transform mode, the very first check box in the Options bar (see Figure 2) will toggle the reference point on and off.
[Figure 2 – Transform Options Bar]
38
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
In Photoshop Preferences there is also a setting on the Tools tab “Show Reference Point when using Transform” which when checked will also ensure the Reference Point is displayed by default (see Figure 3).
[Figure 3 – Photoshop Tools Preferences]
The Reference Point performs a very important role when using most of the Transform commands like Rotate, Scale, Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical because the transformation is performed with the location of the Reference Point as the centre of the transformation. Often you will want the Reference Point to be exactly in the centre, or exactly on one of the corner or edge bounding box handles. There is an easy way to move the Reference Point to one of these locations, that is using the Reference Point Locator that appears in the Options Bar (see Figure 2). It is a small grid of nine squares, clicking one of the squares will move the Reference Point to the relevant place. Otherwise, you can simply drag the Reference Point to a new location using the mouse. Keep in mind that the Reference Point does not have to be inside the bounding box, it can be anywhere in your image. Another useful tip is when scaling objects in a scene, placing the reference point on the horizon will cause the scaling to keep the perspective correct.

Meet your artist Ilona Abou-Zolof Sydney, NSW Australia
Website : www.zolof.net https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-2/ilona-abou-zolof/
59
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Ilona, I am proud grandmother of eight grandchildren. I seriously got into photography in 2005, 2006 I joined my first Camera Club and joined others over the years. After a few years learning the basics of photography I wanted to learn and practise methods of photography and digital art that doesn’t fit into a box. I believe you must think outside the box to get noticed. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? About six or seven years ago my friend Christina Brunton said, “NEXT YEAR I WANT TO GET CREATIVE.” So, she did, she joined a few FB groups and signed up with Sebastian Michaels. When the Photo Artistic Life group opened for new members to join, I joined. Since then, I joined AWAKE and KAIZEN. I am loving my artistic journey. Here I am learning the tools to make my photography and digital art stand out. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I get inspired by fellow artists in our groups and on other FB pages. If I get an idea, I look at images on the web to get more ideas. Christina Brunton and I collaborate with our models and come up with photo shoots. We love to work on projects. I am interested in painterly images and fantasy images. It pleases me to see how I can make my own reality. I will watch lots of tutorials to learn new skills and then make sure to practise, practise and practise. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I believe creativity doesn’t come to you, I believe you have to work on it and do so every day. It doesn’t matter how busy I get during the day, I love to get to my computer and start working on an image with a couple of layers or a lot of layers. My work starts with an idea (at least 90% of the time). I try to work with my own images, but I will used purchased images if I can’t find what I need. What does your art mean to you? My art or creating my art means sanity to me. In our days with COVID and everything else going on I can travel in my mind. Often, I get asked how long I spend on one piece. I don’t notice time; it is like meditation. It relaxes me. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Most definitely, my art has changed how I approach every day. I learned to say no to things I don’t want to do. My priorities have changed. I still love spending time with my family, the next favourite of mine is my art and sharing it with my family and friends. I decluttered my life, my emails and my social media activities. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? Christina Brunton, friends on Photoshop Artistry, AWAKE and Kaizen are always inspiring me. I also enjoy our monthly Zoom meetings with the Artists Down Under group. I get inspiration from our Artists Down Under Magazine, from the Living the Photo Artistic Life Magazine, from online galleries and other friends that are into photography or digital art.
60
Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I hope I will never stop learning new skills or creating digital art. I believe keeping your brain busy will hopefully prevent or slow down any kind of sicknesses. I love the digital world and enjoy working on my images or create any digital art from scratch. I am working this year on about 7 or 8 different exhibitions, I am sure it will keep me busy and maybe even out of mischief.

SOME DO’S AND DONT’S IN STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY By Dean Hohn
“Pure Gold”
I’m going to share with you the story behind the making of this still life image and hopefully, it can be a lesson to everyone to make sure your backgrounds are secure before changing the arrangement around. I had taken several slow exposure shots with sidelight trying to get the effect I wanted. I decided I needed to move a panel to the right of the setup and in doing so, I bumped the background panel and it fell forward. When it fell, it knocked the vintage bottle of Bundaberg Pure Gold Rum, which was a special edition bottle from the 2000 Sydney Olympics and could only be purchased in the duty-free shops for incoming and outgoing travelers. When I saw it start to go, I reached but missed and the bottle hit the carpeted floor and snapped the cork lid off. Needless to say, I was feeling very sick to my stomach and wanted to vomit when I saw the top go in one direction and the bottle in another! Luckily the bottle didn’t break. Mind you it might as well have as it’s no longer a collector’s item in mint condition! What makes this all the worse is we’re house-sitting for friends and it is their bottle of rum! When I finally gathered myself and started to come to grips with what had just happened, I went out to the other room to my computer and did a Google search for the bottle of rum. $1999.00 and there is a replacement bottle on the way! I sincerely hope this is the most expensive still-life image I ever make! Please learn from my mishap and secure your background when setting up a still-life, so something similar doesn’t happen to you too.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
