It’s hard to believe that we are half way through the year and people are already talking about how many weekends it is until Christmas. Goodness me, I am still trying to get over the last one.
This month I am delighted to bring you all our favourites and some new Interviews and fun challenges that our artists were set. A huge congratulations go to all our successful artists in their competitions and exhibitions over the past month.
Andrew Haysom’;s Photoshop tutorial delves into “Mask Density”, something I had never heard of but have found very informative.
Another image is shared from the Redlands Digital Art Group’s “Chinese Whispers” series.
The interview that Maureen has organised for us this month is with Sonia Pusey. Such a very clever and talented artist. One interview that I really loved reading. So inspirational.
AThis months artist challenge certainly put a smile to my face. Each month the challenge is set trying to trick and push our artists, but each month they keep raising the bar and rising above expectations. I know you are going to love this one.

By Andrew HaysomThe mask Density slider has been around in Photoshop for a long time, it can be very useful, but a lot of people don’t understand what it does, or how it can be used.
Before we talk about it in more detail, let’s do some basic revision on what Layer Masks are and what they do.
Every layer, whether it be a pixel-based layer or an Adjustment or Fill layer, can have a layer mask.
You can paint on the layer mask in black or white (or any shade of grey) and wherever the layer mask is black the pixels on that layer, or the effect of that layer (in the case of Adjustment or Fill Layers) will be blocked.
Wherever the layer mask is white, the pixels on that layer (or the effect of that layer) will be complete (100%).
For shades of grey the pixels or effect of that layer will be partially “blocked” depending upon the darkness of the shade of grey.
“Black conceals and White reveals” is a saying often used to remember the effect of a layer mask.
You can paint on a layer mask in many ways, but the tools most often used are the Brush tool and the Gradient tool.
If you have a selection active when you create a mask that selection will be used to create the mask, so a common way to create a mask is to use a selection technique (Select Subject, Select Sky, Object Selection Tool) first, then the layer mask will be created with white for the selected parts and black for the unselected parts.
Using a layer mask is a preferred method of operating as it is non-destructive. That is, it doesn’t destroy or alter any of the pixels in your actual image.
When you have a mask selected, the mask properties will be shown in the Properties panel (choose Window / Properties if the Properties panel is not visible). The Density slider can be found here (see Figure 1).

The mask Density slider affects the non-white (black or shades of grey) parts of your mask, white parts of the mask are unaffected by the Density slider.
The mask Density slider defaults to 100% (fully slid to the right) where it leaves the mask exactly as you created it.
As you slide the Density slider to the left the blacks and greys in the mask get gradually lighter (or more transparent), until at 0% the whole mask will be white, letting the pixels or effect of the layer show through completely in your image.
Let’s look at an example.
In Figure 2a, I have an image of an Eastern Yellow Robin. I have run the Nik Color Efex filter and used the Pro Contrast preset to increase the Dynamic Contrast in the image. I have then used Select Subject to select the bird and the branch and created a layer mask. This “protects” the background from the contrast adjustment and means it is only applied to the bird (through the white parts of the mask).
Now, if I decide I would like to allow some of the increase in contrast to apply to the background, but not at full strength, I can slide the Density slider to the left. The black in the mask that is protecting the background will get progressively lighter, allowing some of the contrast adjustment through to affect the background. In Figure 2b the Density slider is at 50%, so the mask on the background is 50% grey allowing the contrast adjustment to affect the background at half strength.
Another adjustment where the Density slider is useful is when applying noise reduction. Often noise is much more noticeable in areas of low contrast (like the sky or a blurry background) and is less noticeable where there is finer detail (eg in my bird and branch).
In addition, if you apply a strong noise adjustment it will work well on a sky or blurry background but will often destroy the detail in other parts of your image.
So, in Figure 2c I have created a new layer and applied some noise reduction. I have duplicated the mask from the previous layer and inverted it (by selecting it and pressing [Cmd/Ctrl+I]). Then I have moved the Density slider to about 60% which allows me to use a reduced amount (40%) of noise reduction to my detail areas and full noise reduction to the background.
Another good use of the Density slider is when using gradients on masks. In the example shown in Figure 2d I have used the Nik Color Efex Detail Extractor preset to pull some detail from shadows, and added an orange Solid Colour layer, set to Soft Light, to add some light and colour. I have grouped these two adjustments and added a mask on the group, then used the Radial Gradient to limit the adjustments to the centre of the image, radiating out from the sunrise.
Then, deciding I’d like some of these adjustments across the whole image, I moved the mask Density slider to 45% allowing a little more than half-strength adjustments across the whole image.
Another use for the mask Density is when you are painting into a black mask to reveal objects or adjustments. A temporary change to the mask Density (perhaps to 50% or something) can help you “see through” the black mask while painting through it.
So, if the mask Density slider is something you’re not familiar with, or not using much, I encourage you to try it, then I’m sure, like me, you will begin using it more and more.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and where you live?
I live in Collendina, which is a small town in Country NSW. I moved back from Brisbane to be with my family. I currently work full time and am also trying to start up a small printing business with my art.
2. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry?
I guess my imagination was the driving force behind it all. I became a Photographer & didn’t find it satisfying. What I could see in my mind was not what was showing on my photo’s. I came across Sebastian’s course while browsing the internet one day & became hooked. It was exactly what I was after, finally being able to express my thoughts into art.
3. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art?
There are so many people that inspire me with their talent in the art world, but I guess if I am truly honest with myself it is the gift to be able to create whatever my imagination can think of. I am very thankful to all the support within our group of artists who are always there to pick you up when you start to doubt yourself.
4. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art?
I guess for me I may see an image and that will spark an idea that I would like to try. I then like to scroll through my collection of images to see what I can add to it. I love to play around with whimsical fantasy and also images that involve women. Years ago I worked in Glamour Photography, so the idea has always stuck in my head that I can take a photograph of a woman and enter her into a fantasy world that she would never experience.
5. What does your art mean to you?
So much, it is a way I can de-stress & relax. But I guess it also gives me pride & self confidence that I can achieve something by myself and can put smiles onto people’s faces.
6. Do you think that since starting in photo artistry it has changed you and if so, how?
Yes, it has made me believe in myself, something that I had lacked for a very long time.
7. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from?
All my fellow artists, their drive and passion, their talent and especially their support.
8. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps?
I am currently setting up a new business called “The Funky Mug Shack”, that I am incorporating my art on to. It also allows me to do personalised art for people as well. I would also like to do another childrens book once the business is up & running. Then maybe one day open up my dream of a Glamour Studio to incorporate my art into the Photography that I take. One step at a time.

Thank you, Sonia for doing this interview. You’ve been a member of Artists Down Under since 2022 and in the same year you were one of our Featured Artists. Since then we’ve seen many of your wonderful images in our monthly magazine, and in the international magazine ‘Living the Photo Artistic Life’.
Your art has a unique story telling quality to it, and I know our artists, and our general readers, will enjoy reading your comments.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN ARTISTIC, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN PHOTO ARTISTRY?
No. I remember as a child getting SO frustrated trying to draw. It never looked like I wanted it to look, and it never looked as good as my older sister’s work. I would have a tantrum, tear it up and throw it in the bin and sulk. If nothing else the passing of time has taught me a little bit more patience.
YOU CREATE A WIDE VARIETY OF VERY STRONG, STORY TELLING IMAGES. HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THE STORY IDEAS?
Having a story makes it easier for me to compose my images. I NEED a story to create. It gives me a purpose as to why the “hero” is doing whatever they are doing and why objects are placed in certain positions.
Inspiration comes from “props” I find in craft shops, toy shops or second-hand stores. Song lyrics are very inspiring. Just a line from a song can create an image in my mind. I’m into my second year of 52Frames, a weekly photography challenge that has a weekly prompt. It is extremely motivating plus the time limit (only 7 days) keeps me from procrastinating (which I have a tendency to do).

I’M TOLD YOU ONLY USE YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHS FOR EVERY ELEMENT IN YOUR IMAGES. CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR MOTIVATION FOR THIS DECISION?
Yes. I made a conscious decision four years ago to only use my own photos. I went through a stage of entering my images into photographic competitions. The rules are very strict. I thought if I only used my own photos and followed the photographic competition rules when creating the image, I could enter any of them at any time. It would have been a shame if I really wanted to enter an image but could not because some of the elements was not mine.
I have found that by following this discipline it has opened creative paths I would never have discovered or been bothered with. I think it has also helped me develop my own style.
DO YOU EXCLUSIVELY USE IMAGES OF YOURSELF IN YOUR ART, OR DO YOU SOME TIMES USE OTHER MODELS?
I would love NOT to use myself!! I use myself as a model ONLY because it is convenient. I can also take multiple photoshoots of myself and if they look terrible am quite happy not to use them and take MORE photos until they look right. I don’t feel like I can do that with another model. I don’t want to waste their time or NOT use their photos after they have so generously given up their time for me. Mind you every time I take photos of models, I marvel at how easy it is compared to taking photos of myself. No running back to the camera to see what I look like over and over again.
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PROCESS AND THE TECHNIQUES USED TO CREATE YOUR ART WORKS? AND WHERE YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
I first need a story or idea. That can come from lyrics of a song, a prop or something I’ve seen or heard. I have a file on my phone where I draw rough (very rough) stick figure sketches of all my ideas. I draw them as soon as I think of them otherwise, I can forget them. I then work out what photographs I need. I keep all my photographs tagged by key words in Lightroom. If I don’t have a photo of an element, I need I go and take a photo. If that is not possible, I make do with something else or wait until I have sourced the element to create the image. I keep a list of random objects I need to take photos of.
Once I have all my photos, I start creating in Photoshop. I place all the elements into position and then get to work on all the other adjustments such as lighting, shadows, colour toning etc.

Oh yes!! I love the learning. I’m always doing courses to learn new skills. I’m into Domestika courses at the moment. It is so inspiring to discover new artists and new ways of creating. It’s never ending. I find the more you learn the more you realise just how little you know

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR CREATIVE JOURNEY TAKING YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I have just discovered Hattie Newman a paper sculpture artist. I’m so in love with her work that I have decided to try and incorporate it into my images. I have ordered her book and can’t wait to start creating.
I recently made a diorama that I have used in my images. I intend to dive deeper into diorama making as well.
I don’t consciously decide where my creative journey will take me. I just try to keep my mind open and let everything inspire me.

I’m originally from Adelaide and studied piano and ballet from an early age. I graduated from the Centre of Performing Arts majoring in Dance Performance. I now live in Perth with my husband and family. I work full time but tend to use any spare time I get for creating or learning new skills.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.
My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.
My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.
Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
