a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Hello everyone and welcome to our newest edition of Artists Down Under. Another month is upon us and Christmas is fast approaching. For most of the southern states, we are about to enter Daylight Savings, those extra daylight hours that we are all craving after such a long cold summer, time to get outdoors and relax (in-between the lockdown periods of course). This month our Featured Artist is Mike Kane, a very talented and successful artist from Port Macquarie, NSW. Mike has an amazing array of art and is very successful in competitions and exhibitions. I know you will all love the showcase of work that he has put together for you. This month we have a special article that two of our artists have put together on how they survive the long lockdown periods we have been enduring during this pandemic and have shared some of their amazing artwork that has been inspired by their time alone. Andrew Haysom has kindly shared another of his Photoshop tutorials. This month it is on the Warp Tool. Well, the Redlands Digital Group have certainly not been wasting their time during the lockdown, they have been putting ther creative minds together to bring you their next image in their Chinese Whispers series. It is amazing to see how one image can totally be turned on its head to create the next. Our Monthly Artists Photographic Challenge for this month is “Mushrooms”, I hope you enjoy what our artists have put together for you. That’s it for me until next month, stay safe and take care of each other.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION WARP By Andrew Haysom
Significant changes made in the November 2019 Photoshop CC release, and further changes made in the latest September 2021 release make the Warp tool much easier to use to get the result you want. To invoke the Warp tool you can; - Choose Edit / Transform / Warp from the menu, or - With the Move tool active press Cmd (Mac) / Ctrl (Windows)+T to enter Free Transform, then right-click and choose Warp from the context menu, or - With the Move tool active press Cmd (Mac) / Ctrl (Windows)+T to enter Free Transform, then click the Switch Between Free Transform and Warp icon in the Options bar (see Figure 1).
[Figure 1 – Warp Options Bar with Settings drop-down]
In warp mode you can simply click and drag the image, or the anchor points or grid line segments shown, around to change its shape. You can choose different sized grids from the Grid drop-down in the Options bar (see Figure 1). You can choose when to see additional guides, inside the major grid lines, by clicking the Gear (Settings) icon in the Options bar. This will display the Guide Options menu (see Figure 1). Here you can choose when to see the guides and their colour, opacity and density. The density refers to how many guides will be seen within each grid square.
36
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) You can also customise the Warp grid by adding and removing grid lines. To add grid lines (referred to as “splitting the grid”) click one of the Split icons in the Options bar (Crosswise, Vertical or Horizontal) and then click on the image where you want to “split the grid”. The Crosswise option will add both a horizontal and vertical grid line (see Figure 2).
[Figure 2 – Splitting the grid]
With the September 2021 release you now also have another option of splitting the grid without having to keep returning to the Options bar. Simply hold down the Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) key, then click in the grid somewhere to split it. If you have the mouse pointer near an existing horizontal grid line you will split vertically, if near an existing vertical grid line you will split horizontally, if not near an existing grid line you will split crosswise. Photoshop will visually show you the lines as you hold down the Cmd/Ctrl key and move the mouse pointer around, clicking will add the additional grid line(s). To delete grid lines you’ve added, right-click them and choose Remove Warp Split from the context menu. The points at the intersection of the grid lines are called anchor points and you can use these in different ways to better control the warping.
37
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) You can select multiple anchor points by Shift-clicking them, or by holding down the Shift key and click-dragging a rectangle around them. Then as you warp your object only the areas con trolled by the selected anchor points will be moved/warped, those areas where the anchor points are not selected will not move/warp. De-select selected anchor points using the same Shift-click method. You also have the ability to control the “curve” of the warp using the control (or Bezier) handles that are associated with each anchor point. These operate very similarly to the same control handles you use when drawing with the Pen tool. When you select an anchor point you will see the four control handles emanating from it, as well as a single control handle for each adjacent anchor point (on the side of the selected anchor point). You can drag these control handles to alter the shape of the curve of the warp mesh. These control handles operate in one of two modes (see Figure 3), and which mode is current for a given anchor point is shown by the anchor point shape. If the anchor point is shown as a circle, its control handles will work in “Unison” – that is, when you move one, they will all move. If the anchor point is shown as a square, its control handles are “Independent” – that is, moving one will have no effect on the other three sides.
[Fig 3a & 3b - Unison and Independent options for Control “Bezier” Handle Movement]
By default the anchor points around the edge of your layer/object will be squares (Independent), while interior anchor points will be circles (Unison). You can change the mode for an anchorpoint by holding down the Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) key and clicking on the anchor point. The Warp tool is a powerful way to change the shape of objects. Have a play with it. Andrew Haysom

Meet your artist Mike Kane Port Macquarie, NSW Australia
Website :
www.mikekanephotography.com.au
http://www.artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-3/mike-kane/
56
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I am a retired professional photographer from Scotland and I now live in Port Macquarie, NSW. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? After years of traditional photography I felt I wanted to express my art in a different way. My partner Denise introduced me to “Living the Photo Artistic Life”. My inspiration comes from ideas about sci-fi, fantasy legend, history. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? It will come from an idea and then I’ll photograph all the elements to portray that idea and the work grows from there. What does your art mean to you? It’s my way of story-telling using the photographic medium. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Yes. I find myself creating projects that would have been impossible to create 7 years ago. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I am always trawling the internet for ideas that inspire me. And then I put my slant on it. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I had an exhibition in July this year with my partner Denise McDermott and we are planning other exhibitions next year. I find this an excellent way to showcase my work and let the public see creations that they would not normally see. Tell us about your interest in Astrophotography. My other passion in life is astronomy and astrophotography. I have included a few of my images to let my fellow artists see some of my work they don’t normally see. Looking at the night sky through a telescope and capturing images of planets, nebulae and far distant galaxies is truly amazing for me. It’s hard to believe these are real images and not created artworks.

STAYING POSITIVE IN A COVID LOCKDOWN By Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton
Like many of you, we have been dealing with COVID lockdowns, where we did not see our families for a long time. The only way of catching up with grandchildren was over the phone or video links. Our Artist Down Under group saw our Queensland gathering stopped because of COVID and that in turn lead to our wonderful ADU Zoom meetings. Our monthly zoom meetings included many tutorials provided by our members. For some of us COVID had turned us negative where we have gone down the rabbit hole to depths of despair, but we choose to thrive by going down the rabbit hole to fantasy land where we use our extra time in lockdown concentrating on our art.
Ilona Abou-Zolof - Seahorses
Ilona Abou-Zolof - Cute Turtle
Many of you who know us, will know that before lockdown we used to meet every week and have a tutorial day. During lockdown, we couldn’t get together at all as we both lived in two different hot spots. But we still watched lots of tutorials, only now we just did that on our own. We learnt lots of new things from the tutorials. We spent heaps of time on creating art, doing many things we hadn’t done before.
66
STAYING POSITIVE IN A COVID LOCKDOWN (CONT....) For Christina it was: - Abstracts, different filter effects, dreamy flowers, steampunk, etc. For Ilona it was: - Digital painting in Photoshop or Corel Painter, digital art on the iPad with Procreate, etc.
Christina Brunton - Shell Abstract Christina Brunton - Round And Round
During this past year we were having an exhibition each month and although some of these exhibitions were postponed because of COVID, we still needed to create our art, print, and frame it just in case the lockdown was lifted, and the exhibitions went ahead. We have just heard that the October Head On Festival and national exhibitions which were postponed are now due to open in November. Ironically, we now have three exhibitions in November. The Head On exhibition will be at the TAP Gallery in Surry Hills, another in the Corner Gallery in Stanmore and one in a furniture store in Petersham. As you see we had to keep busy, sane and positive just positive with our minds not COVID positive. Examples of the kinds of art we created are here for you to see. So stay positive my friends and try to create every day!

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
