EDITOR’S MESSAGE December is finally upon us and the silly season is yet again in full swing. Not long now until Santa arrives, so I hope you all have your Christmas stocking out ready to hang for the jolly man to fill.

Well what a month November was - both exciting and sad at the same time. Firstly with my exciting appointment as your new Editor of Artists Down Under, and secondly the very sad resignation of our wonderful longstanding Editor and Founder of this superb magazine - Athalie Taylor, due to health reasons. From all of us at Artists Down Under, we thank you Athalie, from the bottom of our hearts for all that you have done and hope you make a speedy recovery.

You will read a fascinating article by one of our artists, Margaret Kalms about the world renowned Photographer - Peter Dombrovskis. ... and his life’s journey to get his work to where it is today.

November has been a very rewarding month for our artists with a large number having great success in photographic art competitions and some winning “Image of the Year” -

This month we take an in-depth look at a unique kind of Art Gallery and one that is very close to a lot of our artists’ hearts – Heaven Art Gallery

We meet a group of artists that are not only good friends, but have come up with a way of creating art using the old “Chinese Whispers” method, and follow their step by step journey into their first finished piece.

We delve into some always needed Photoshop tutorials with our ever loving artist Andrew Haysom as he takes us step by step into how he created his awesome image – “Whirlpool”. Trish Hoskins talks about how to find a “Happy Medium” of gathering images for our artistic creations, one that I am sure we will all agree with and laugh along with. Care for Africa Support the Care for Africa Foundation to raise much needed funds to help drill fresh water wells in the Tanzanian villages. The latest prize is the artwork “Goat Island Morning” (pictured above) by Dean Hohn. The image is a sublimation print on aluminium with an ultra gloss finish and a floating hanger, 20”x30” (511cmx76cm). The image has been kindly printed and donated by Print 2 Metal in support of the Care for Africa Foundation.

The raffle will be drawn the 24th January 2018. Raffle tickets are $5 for one and 3 for $10. Dean Hohn 5th Anniversary Exhibition Dean has been invited to exhibit in the Gallery Pejean 5th Anniversary Exhibition which opens on the 3rd November. The exhibition will be hung and available for viewing from the 28th October. Gallery Pejean is an exciting platform for Australian contemporary art, showcasing both established and emerging artists, with a focus on Tasmanian artists. Located in the heart of Launceston’s CBD in the vibrant George Street precinct, Gallery Pejean is a commercial art gallery that promotes and presents the work of contemporary visual artists working across a broad spectrum of mediums and artistic platforms. Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! INever think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch. It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world.

I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board to work out how I could fit into their organization. In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org.

“What is creative living? It is any life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear” – an extract from BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert. This quote from Elizabeth Gilbert’s book had a profound effect on my thinking. It demonstrated for me that by being brave and taking risks, irrespective of the outcome, I may be able to get closer to my goal of calling myself a digital artist. It has taken a while, but I am happy to say that despite the confidence I gained through an enormous amount of trial and error, the ongoing desire to push boundaries, try new techniques, experiment and constantly ask myself “what if?” has become a natural part of my creative regime and carried me further on my creative journey than I could ever have hoped for before. Constant inspiration comes from the extremely talented group of AWAKE and KAIZEN artists with whom I am privileged to be associated. It also comes from my daily surroundings, my love of colour, music, nature, books, family, friends and life in general. I hope that my work either tells a story, evokes an emotion or invites the viewer to find their own story in what they see. I am only just beginning to find my voice as a digital artist and am constantly looking for new ways to enhance my work as small changes in a piece of digital art make a huge difference. It is this discovery process that excites, challenges and invigorates me especially when something awesome and totally unexpected happens! Being constantly curious about my art, taking risks with my art and finding balance within my art is truly wonderful and has helped me make the conscious choice to hone my skills and create my own artistic path. by Margaret Kalms Sometimes conventional, un-manipulated photography is so stunning it catches your breath! Peter Dombrovskis’ photographs, now showing at The National Library of Australia (NLA), fit this description. Peter Dombrovskis - Journeys into the Wild, is an exhibition of 70 photographs, chosen from a collection of over 3,000 large format slides held at the NLA. Dombrovskis was dedicated to showing the natural landscapes that he loved. Most of the photos were taken in South West Tasmania with a few from Macquarie Island and Fraser Island. Most Australians had never seen such primal landscapes before. His iconic calendars and books, published in the 1980s, were immensely popular and continued to be published by his widow, Liz Dombrovskis, right up until 2008. In the 1980s, Peter Dombrovskis’s photographs were influential in the campaign to save the Gordon and Franklin Rivers from being dammed for hydro-electricity. This was a controversial development and even became political. Photography as environmental activism! Bob Brown selected the original photograph, ”Morning mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River, Tasmania” for the campaign poster. The photos range from close-ups of cushion mosses and fungi to vast dramatic scenes. He was a very considered photographer, planning his trips carefully. He had to. He went to many isolated places, sometimes hiking for days at a time. He needed to carry all his food, camping gear and photographic equipment. His pack would have been cumbersome and heavy. He had to be prepared for all conditions from bright sunshine to howling winds, to rain and snow! And his camera was heavy, a large format Linhof Master Technika 5 x 4 inch with three lenses; 90mm, 150mm and 300mm. Dombrovskis often waited for hours for the perfect light such as in Morning light on Little

He did bold and dangerous feats such as climbing up cliffs or canoeing down uncharted rapids such as First Split from lower basin, Gordon River, Tasmania. When I saw First Split, I though Dombroskis would have done the splits himself just getting into that position!

When you visit, take your time to absorb the photographs, to really see them. Each one is carefully composed and has exquisite detail. You will see unusual plants from this corner of ancient Gondwana. I was privileged that I didn’t have to get tired, cold, wet and hungry in order to see these magnificent scenes. They transported

me to a place of serenity while I stayed safe and warm indoors! Dombrovskis: 1945 - 1996, died far too early, doing what he loved, photographing near Mount Hayes in the Western Arthurs mountain range in South West Tasmania. You can enjoy his work at home: the NLA has published an art quality book to accompany the exhibition, available at the NLA bookshop. Go and visit Peter Dombrovskis - Journeys into the Wild, in Canberra at the NLA. The exhibition is free and is open every day and exhibition continues until 30 January 2018. MARCELL A I’m a bit of an eclectic artist, but one thing’s for sure, I normally use a female face in my art. Drawing and painting faces is a passion I’ve had for many years. Self taught through on-line classes. To see the first face I ever painted (and that I was so proud of at the time) is absolutely awful, but I have kept some of the out-of-proportion, quirkiness of those early faces, as it adds a unique style to my art. During these early years I discovered many techniques and mediums, and my favourite medium to use is a mixture of graphite pencils, coloured pencils and acrylic paint on watercolour paper, using a photo as a reference, especially for the light and shadow areas of the face. Years later, in 2015, I discovered digital art through Sebastian Michaels’ tutoring in his on-line courses. Now this was something entirely different, using Photoshop as my medium, and (by now) hundreds and hundreds of textures and elements and techniques to enhance my art. The good thing about having a background in drawing and painting is that I can use my experience with “light and shadow” to really make my art pop, and make it come alive. I also now use models in my digital art which are so much fun to create with. In the image titled “Beatrice – Spirit of Love” I also used a background of a photo taken near my home on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. My own photography is something I wish to use more of, so I am currently practising with camera and tripod to bring something new and different to my digital art. This is a never ending, exciting journey that I am very fortunate to enjoy every day.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION Andrew Haysom

I admit to being a Photoshop junkie. I love just playing around in Photoshop, I think the correct technical term is “futzing”. “Futzing” is defined as “unstructured, playful, often experimental interaction between a human being and a computer, product, or any technology”. I don’t really mind if I don’t always end up with a resulting image I love, it’s fun to play anyway. I enjoy looking for sources of inspiration, and ways to make that “futzing” more fun, and the chances of a successful result more likely. Today I want to share with you two of my favourite sources of inspiration. The image shown in Figure 1 is a recent creation I called “Whirlpool”, and is created mainly from ideas and techniques from these two wonderful inspirational sources. The first inspirational source is Scott Valentine, one of the most well-respected writers on Adobe Photoshop there is. What I love about Scott’s work is how deeply technical he usually is. If you’re someone like me who likes to understand the “nuts and bolts”, and what is going on behind the scenes, you’ll love Scott’s work too.

1. Create a new document, 3000x3000 pixels, 300 pixels/inch, RGB & 16-bit. 2. Set the foreground colour to black and the background colour to white. 3. Set two guides, one vertical at 50% and one horizontal at 50% to establish a centre point for the document. 4. Select the Gradient tool and set it to Angle gradient, make sure Reverse is not checked. Create a gradient on the background layer by dragging left-to-right from the centre of the document to the right hand edge of the document. 5. Clip a new Posterize adjustment layer to the background layer and set the Levels to 30. 6. Create a new blank layer. 7. Select the Gradient tool and set it to Radial gradient, check Reverse. Create a gradient on the new blank layer by dragging left-toright from the centre of the document to somewhere just outside the right hand edge of the document.

8. Clip a new Posterize adjustment layer to the Radial gradient layer and set the Levels to 30. 9. Set the Blend Mode of the Radial gradient layer to Linear Burn. 10. Create a Stamp Visible layer using “The Move” Shift+Option(Alt)+Command (Ctrl)+E. 11. On the new Stamp Visible layer use the Distort/Twirl filter, in the example I set the amount to -90. Figure 2 shows what your Photoshop screen and Layer panel should look like after following the above steps.

The snail shell like shape that you can see in the “Whirlpool” image was created using techniques laid out by Scott in an article called “Gradient Experiments” in the October/ November 2017 issue of Photoshop User magazine. Rather than repeat the article here, I thought I would lay out the steps (slightly changed from the article) to create the basic snail shell in the image. Then you can have a play yourself.

Now obviously there are endless variations to this idea. By using different gradients, different directions for those gradients, different colours, different blend modes, different filters you can create wonderful varieties of elements for your images. Duplicate the elements (like I did with the snail shell for “Whirlpool”) and blend them in, or blend in different elements for more variations on the theme. Then use other Photoshop adjustment layers and filters to tweak to a pleasing result. I also want to very highly recommend two of Scott’s Photoshop publications. These are my very favourite Photoshop books. If you love Photoshop, especially the nitty-gritty, nuts-andbolts of Photoshop, I can guarantee you will love these books. They will give you so many ideas, I cannot recommend them highly enough. each. He records a detailed video for each action that shows how to use the action. His actions cover a very wide range of effects, from flames and explosions, to various dispersion effects and painting styles. You can find his range of Photoshop actions at this web address; https://graphicriver.net/user/ sevenstyles/portfolio One of the things I love about his actions is the multi-layered result that makes tweaking the effect of the action, or changing it completely, very easy. I don’t believe I have ever just run an action and used the end-result without significant tweaking. The fact that effects are in different layers also enables the inclusion of certain layered effects to be combined between actions, or to be transplanted between compositions. The diagonal line/light effects in the “Whirling” piece were created in, and extracted from the SevenStyles “Blades” action. Anyway, enough from me, time for you to go investigate some of Scott Valentines and SevenStyles work, and inspire yourself to some new Photoshop creations.

My name is Ona and I currently live in Grafton, located on the far north coast of NSW but I am shortly moving to the NW coast of Tasmania where my partner and I recently purchased a block of land. I am really looking forward to this next phase of our lives and can’t wait to start. While I have been heavily involved in digital scrapbooking for the last ten years, I have found that in the last few years my focus has evolved into a more art-based form, applying Photoshop techniques to creatively manipulate images to express an idea or thought. I find the process of manipulating images very satisfying and relaxing and love nothing better than merging several different versions of an image together to see what I can come up with. Adding texture to my digital art pieces is another passion of mine. Trying to mimic the real life feel of a soft piece of lace or a raised blob of paint, or the rough surface of a rock or brick can be challenging, and while I may not always be successful I sure do have fun! Inspiration for my digital art often comes from various places such as; nature, songs, poems or a photo. Sometimes I have an idea in my head that I just have to get out or at times I just throw a few things on the ‘canvas’ and see what I come up with. One thing I do know for sure is that my artistic creativeness needs an outlet and I have found the perfect medium in digital manipulation. FINDING A HAPPY MEDIUM Trish Hoskins Finding That Source! Finding a source for images to create can sometimes seem overwhelming. I myself often jump from pillar to post in deciding what I want to focus or concentrate on. We all are probably guilty of scrolling through the countless images in our Facebook or Instagram groups and doing the “chimp” at images (oow ow oow) and wanting to replicate them for ourselves. So off we go and gather countless terabytes of images be it from a designer or web source, or we take off and scout for images of our own.

We play for a bit and then never end up achieving anything half as good or lose sight of the original image and end up with our own version. End result is we have so many thousands of images, kits, etc. that you just get entirely overwhelmed and end up procrastinating and achieving nothing. I myself have been entirely guilty of this over the past year or so and after a quick trip overseas in late August came home with another couple of thousand images staring at me in my explorer folders saying, “Pick me! Pick me!”. I sometimes do almost nothing. I spent days just moving images from folder to folder tidying

up duplicates and exclaiming over images and elements I had forgotten I had. That down time got me enthused. It made me realise that it is OK to take a break from constantly creating because sometimes what you create is almost done on rote and you are not actually achieving anything. I decided to stop reviewing the thousands of images I have and find a new challenge. Funny that it was to be adding another 350 odd images to my already 27,633 images on my iPhone!!

FINDING A HAPPY MEDIUM

A friend referred me to an opening of a garden in the local hills for what we call in Australia – “Open Garden Scheme” – where properties that have exceptional gardens will open them up for usually one or two days a year and the public can visit for a small fee. Usually they offer morning and afternoon teas at a small cost and, depending on the place, plants for sale and often an Artist in Residence.

I never ever knew there were so many varieties of Iris that could be grown. They were just magnificent.

My visit was to an Iris garden. I checked if it was suitable to take photos as the minute I reached the front gate I knew I was in for a treat.

So, I think we all just need to often take time to break from our routines or visiting places we always do and start to think outside the square. I had hesitated about going but it was so worth it and I have a library of images that can both be

After teaching I acquired an Associate Diploma in Visual Art, majoring in Applied Textiles and since then I have entered many mainstream competitions and have taken part in quite a few group exhibitions, organizing some of them myself. I chose photography over textile art as I could see that it would be forever challenging and indeed, it has proven so. As technology progresses, so do the opportunities to use this medium in so many different ways. I have always been interested in creative imagery and creating this in the computer or the phone. I have also been combining my creative photography with sketching over/under the image. My grandchildren are my most popular models but I also use store mannequins for my subjects. I give talks and workshops on how to create images on the phone.

REDLAND’S FAB FOUR - A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF FOUR PHOTO ARTISTS Maureen Maxwell

The members of our group consist of our new editor Pam Henderson, Gerard Whelan, Mick Rooney and Maureen Maxwell. We all live in Redlands City, which is east of Brisbane, on the shores of Moreton Bay in Queensland. The four of us joined Sebastian Michaels’ Photo Artistry course, and his 12 months AWAKE course, at different times over the last two and a half years and as a result we are at different stages of development. Each one of us has a shared interest in photography, and we all had a desire to push our photography in different directions and to allow our creative muse to fly free. We meet regularly for dinner to talk about our shared passions, bounce ideas around, and

to discuss where we can take our collective thoughts over time. The first idea to come from our group is to conduct Collaborative Volleys on a monthly basis. We will each take it in turn to start the volley with an image, or artwork, of our own. This image will then bounce to the next person in the group to add their own creative ideas and on it goes until it reaches the last person to put the finishing touches to it. We then have the big ‘reveal’ at our next dinner. The final image ‘NAME OF ART WORK ????’ you see on this page is the result of our first collaboration. It has been really interesting, and motivating, to see how we each approached the art we are presented with. However, we all agreed that when we first looked at what we were challenged with we felt a degree

of ‘OH NO! What can I possibly do with that!’ But then the creativity started to kick in and off we went. The first person to start this volley off was Gerard as it was his idea to have a collaborative volley between us. Maureen, then Mick, followed and Pam added the final touches. We are so delighted, and excited, by the first collective image we created as a team. None of us had any idea where it would end up but that was the joy of it all. We also agreed that the learning opportunities by working together are numerous. Each one of us has focussed on different aspects of photo artistry, and it is these differences that have encouraged us to combine our artistic talent.
