Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board You can see my gallery of images at https:// to work out how I could fit into their organization. worldpix.org/galleries-2/ In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.

My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.

Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. From amateurs with just a cellphone to professionals with the latest gear, the participants in the AoB photo challenge bring many and varied perspectives to the weekly challenges. The challenges are designed to develop skills for wildlife and nature advocacy through visual storytelling, creativity and learning new photographic techniques. If you want to start using your photography for good causes, do join us. Details at https://www.artbyjlm.com/art-of-birding-2018.html

Week 36: death and decay (story) Death and decay is all around us, and is an important part of a healthy ecosystem. Show how death supports the living.

Week 37: my favourite critter (creative) Do you have a critter that you’re repeatedly drawn too? For some it’s the kingfisher, for me it’s the kākā. The more you photograph the same critter, the more you’ll understand it and bring out its personality in your images. Make us fall in love with your favourite critter too by taking a compelling photo of it.

Week 38: bird in flight (technical) Photographing birds in flight is challenging for sure. It helps to learn a bit about the bird you’re photographing so that you can predict its behaviour and be ready. Other hints include shooting earlier or later in the day with the sun behind you. Use a wide aperture and a fast shutter speed. Check your camera manual to see if you have an autofocus mode that will lock onto a moving target. For inspiration, the Great Kererū Count begins on the 21st of September, and you may find photographing these large boofheads easier than other species.

Week 39: beauty is in the eye of the beholder (creative) Too often, the cutest and most beautiful critters hog the headlines. Your challenge this week is to show something not normally thought of as beautiful in a compelling way.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge Photographers Photos from Prior Weeks

Linton was asked to photograph the translocation of rare kākahi freshwater mussels to Zealandia EcoSanctuary. This amazing project involves local kiwi, scientists, conservationists and volunteers collaborating to ensure the survival of this threatened species. His photos were used by national media. Linton said afterwards “it’s certainly fascinating to see just how much the challenges of #artofbirding2018 applied to this job.” This photo depicts the release of mussels into the lake using a traditional kete (woven flax bag).

We are lucky to share Opoutere with the tui, kereru, bellbird, piwakawaka, wax eye, kaka, morepork, cormorant, godwit, oystercatcher and of course, the dotterel. The Wharekawa Spit hosts a gazetted wildlife sanctuary where an amazing array of birds make their nests each summer. Most notable are the dotterels and oystercatchers (en-dangered and threatened birds respectively).

CHRISTINA BRUNTON AND ILONA ABOU-ZOLOF

INTERVIEW

By Trish Hoskin I first met these two ladies in the Awake – Down Under Group get together in Melbourne in 2017 although I knew of both via our Facebook Groups. They were great fun to hang with and I also got to know them even better this year when we all went to Tasmania and stayed in the same accommodations. All the group learnt so much more about them at a group get together and they are a pretty talented couple. I asked them if they would share some of their backgrounds and their talent with us in this interview. When did you both join Awake and or Kaizen. Both of us are members in Awake and Kaizen. Christina joined Awake in 2015, Ilona joined Awake in 2016. We both joined Kaizen at the beginning which is 2 years ago. I know you are both in a camera group can you tell us a bit more about it. We both met about 12 years ago at the Macarthur Photographic Society. Both of us were on the committee. We have joined a couple of other clubs. We were on the committees in each club. This meant a lot of work, but we also learnt a lot and had a say in what will happen in those clubs. We also are on the committee of Camerally. Camerally is an organisation that gathers members from all clubs of NSW for a long weekend every two years.

Tell us a bit about how the two of you get together to follow tutorials from the various groups and what you get out of doing that together. With the AWAKE and KAIZEN groups we decided to do the online tutorials together. We meet once a week, get comfortable and watch any new tutorials from Sebastian. We hold each other accountable for following up on homework we set ourselves and on the projects set by Sebastian. If we run out of new tutorials for those groups we also study with the Shiftart group and signed up for the Summit. Again, we give ourselves homework. Last but not least, we also study courses on Creative Live. We will watch artists like Brooke Shaden, Sue Bryce, Lindsay Adler, Lisa Carney and many others. Creative Live has very often specials for their courses and you own them for life.

CHRISTINA BRUNTON AND ILONA ABOU-ZOLOF INTERVIEW (Cont ....) I remember you telling us about your Milk Bath Shoot in Tasmania, can you enlighten the readers a bit more about this. We always think of something new to do to extend our comfort zone. We decided on a milk bath shoot and we are lucky enough to have our own model, Effie Lmn, who is willing to try new things with us. We all collaborate and come up with new ideas. We all came up with the idea of a Milk Bath Photoshoot. We came across several problems: • Blow up swimming pool too large • Small bathroom, low light, small space, needed a ladder to shoot from above • Electric light and water – DANGER – so we used battery powered LED lights • Yellow almond milk • Blotchy cornflour • Wide angle lenses caused distortion We were all laughing so much from all the problems. We thought we would not get any decent shots, but we were very surprised how they turned out. Recently we did it again at Effie’s request. This time we were better prepared, and it took half the time. Straight into the bathtub and Effie changed many times. The lesson from this, even if you don’t know how to do it, just try it, and you will get better and have lots of fun trying. We did.

How you come up with idea for your shoots and fantasy work etc. Both of us really enjoy working on projects and have a list of different projects to move onto. We collaborate to come up with different ideas. Very often we get ideas from watching the tutorials or looking at exhibitions. We like to work on our own photos, so we have lots of our own stock images. We will use our own textures and overlays but sometimes we will use the ones provided by Awake. We base our photoshoots on the projects we want to do next. As you can see they have a lot of fun and produce some really great pieces. It was lovely to catch up with them in Tasmania and thanks so much for taking the time to help create the interview. Trish Hoskin

DOCKL ANDS MARINA

I think of myself as a photographer first, Photoshop “junkie second and have been dabbling in the world of digital art, inspired by the Photoshop Artistry and Awake training of Sebastian Michaels, for a couple of years now. I was a fairly late convert to photography and bought my first DSLR in 2011 and am basically self-taught, but have recently progressed to developing and delivering Beginners Photography and Photoshop classes in the local area. Whilst I love photographing anything, I am particularly inspired by nature and wildlife. My major interest is in bird photography and I enjoy having my images used in ways that support environmentally positive causes. After thinking for most of my life that I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body, the pleasure that digital art with my photography and Photoshop has given me has been quite liberating. When creating my art I prefer to use my own photographs wherever I can, with the exception to that being using photographs taken by close friends as these also mean something to me. One very close friend has been kind enough to let me use beautiful photos she has taken of her daughter in many of my artistry pieces, and these are amongst my favourite works, two of them are published in this feature. During a period recently when I was feeling a little down, another lovely friend sent me some of her floral photos to use in my art, and again two of these are included in this feature. The other thing that I have noticed recently is how much better I like my work when there is some passion and love behind it, again there are some pieces created using my bird images amongst this feature recently created for a beautiful friend who is suffering a serious illness. The hobby of photography and digital art has become incredibly important to me, mainly due to the very close friends that I have made through it, creating some of the strongest friendships of my life. REDLANDS DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell

CHINESE WHISPERS #10 “OUTBACK” STAGE 2

STAGE 1

FINAL STAGE

This month the three of us collaborators have ventured into the Australian Outback. Of course, our Outback is so vast, and varied, each of us could have taken this month’s challenge in many different directions. Pam Henderson started off the round, followed by Gerard Whelan who added the next lot of elements. Gerard managed to make the challenge even more difficult for Maureen to complete as the final person this month. Collaboration is not easy, but we all enjoy the challenge. There are certainly many times when you think “what can I possibly do with this?”. That was very definitely the situation for me this month as the final person in the round - I looked at it, on and off, for a number of hours trying to find inspiration. I also tried a number of different processes before settling on a final creative approach. A lot of fun! We hope you enjoy!

S TICK ‘EM UP I am a retired architect and builder but I have always had a huge passion for photography. I used to marvel at some of the artworks I saw on various internet sites and often wondered if I could do something like that. Then I came across Photoshop Artistry and discovered this wonderful group of artists that Sebastian Michaels started. I am still very much in the learning process with my art in this field. There are times when I think I have achieved something quite reasonable and then still realize that I have a long way to go before I can claim that I am competent in achieving what I want to create. I think that I am still a photographer slowly progressing to becoming a digital artist. I have a huge portfolio of photos and slowly but surely converting some of those into not just good photos but actual art works. Nearly all my pieces started out as a photo which I took and converted to something much more interesting. I am so glad to be a small part in this Photoshop Artistry group and still marvel even more then I did when I started, at the magnificent art works being created by my fellow artists in this group. I have my favourite artists as I am sure most of us do and prefer some styles over others. But overall the standard by everyone is just so high and it keeps getting better all the time. I look forward to every month when the new magazine is due just to see what all the artists have come up with. I feel very honoured to be asked to be one of the featured artists again. When our editor Pam Henderson asked if I would take up that challenge again, it spurted me into creating ten new pieces. I usually do two for each month but this has helped to boost my efforts just a bit more.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION USING CONTROL POINTS IN NIK FILTERS By Andrew Haysom

The Nik Collection of Lightroom and Photoshop filters originally created by Nik Software, were acquired by Google in September 2012, and more recently by DxO in October 2017. The screen shots in this article are based on the latest free version that was supplied by Google as I have issues running the later DxO versions, but the information contained in the article is still relevant to all later versions. All of the Nik filters are very powerful tools, providing you in most cases with presets, and then allowing you to make global adjustments using various sliders. The real power of the tools though comes with the use of control points which allow very accurate selective local adjustments, based both on the size of the control point and the luminosity and colour of the area directly under the centre of the control point. Essentially when you place a control point on an image, it creates a complex mask that is based on the red, green, blue, hue, saturation, and brightness values of the area directly under the centre of the control point. These are very similar to luminosity masks, and range masks which I discussed in earlier articles. You can also restrict or expand the “circle of influence” or size of the control point by moving the slider that extends out from the centre of the control point. Due to the fact that the purpose and operation of the various filters is different, the control points in each filter control different attributes, but in essence operation is very similar in each filter. Let’s use Viveza as our first example, then look at the other filters in turn.

Viveza Let’s take a look at the Viveza control panel (Figure 1) which is similar to most of the filters. I’ll highlight differences as we go through the other filters.

You click the Add Control Point button, then go and click on the part of the image you want to selectively adjust. In most filters this button is similar, showing a light circle. When you add a control point it will appear in the Control Point List (see Figure 1) – this is an expandable/collapsible section so you may have to click on the words “Control Point List”, or the small adjacent triangle, to see them. The control point appears on the image as a small circle with a slider extending from it, and other sliders below. The number of sliders on a control point varies filter by filter. Figure 1

88

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..) [Fig 2 – Viveza control point] The size of the control point is shown by the outer circle, which is only visible as you drag the first slider to resize it. You can click and drag the centre circle to move a Control Point around.

Figure 2

In figure 2, you’ll notice that there are sliders for Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Structure, so as you drag these sliders these attributes are changed for the area of the image controlled by the control points mask. Note that at the bottom of the rows of sliders there is a small triangle. Click this to expand the list to show the expanded list of Viveza’s attributes.

[Fig 3 – Viveza control point with extended adjustments list ...] You’ll see we now have sliders where we can adjust Shadow Adjustments, Warmth, Red, Green, Blue and Hue. You can add many control points to an image to make different adjustments to different areas. If you want to see the effect a particular control is having remove the checkmark in the box on the left hand side of the line in the Control Point List (refer “Control point visibility” in Figure 1). This works in the same way as the “eye” visibility indicator on a layer in the Photoshop layer panel. Figure 3

If you wish to get a better idea of the area that is being affected by the control point you can turn on the mask view for the control point. Do this by clicking on the box on the right hand side of the line in the Control Point List (refer “Show mask for control point” in Figure 1).

[Fig 4 – Viveza control point showing mask] When in mask view, the mask changes dynamically as you move the control point. Resizing the control point while in mask mode is useful too to see the areas of the image that will be affected. You can delete the active control point using the Delete button in the control panel (for some filters it is a trashcan), or by pressing the Delete key on the keyboard.

Figure 4

You can duplicate a control point using the Duplicate button in the control panel, or by holding down the Option(Alt) key and dragging the control point.

You can use the Group and Ungroup buttons to group and ungroup control points. To group control points first select the control points you want to group by clicking on the first, then Command(Ctrl)+clicking on the others. You click on the control points themselves (use the centre circle) or on their names in the Control Point List. Once you have them selected press the Group button. All of the control points in the group except one will lose their adjustment sliders, and the entries in the Control Point List will be replaced by one Group entry. When grouped, you control the sliders of all of the control points from the sliders on one of them. So, this is a useful feature if you want to apply the same adjustment to lots of smaller areas in the image. Each individual control point in the group can still be moved around separately and retain their individual size sliders.

89

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..) ANALOG EFEX PRO Analog Efex Pro has two different sort of control points. Each of the preset types allow you to create a control point to selectively adjust the basic adjustments of Detail Extraction, Brightness, Contrast and Saturation.

[Fig 5 – Analog Efex Pro Control Point] In addition any of the preset types that have a Dirt & Scratches, Light Leaks or Photo Plate adjustment will give you control points to control the opacity (or Texture strength as it’s referred to) of that particular effect.

Figure 5

[Fig 6 - Analog Efex Pro Dirt and Scratches Control Point]

Figure 6

COLOR EFEX PRO Color Efex Pro works slightly differently to the previous filters. I think it has been set up this way due to the large number of different presets you have at your disposal, that have so many different adjustment variables of Detail Extraction, Brightness, Contrast and Saturation.

[Fig 7 - Color Efex Pro Control Point]

Figure 7

90

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..) For each of the different presets you have the opportunity to apply multiple control points that allow you to vary the opacity of the effect. You will see there is an Add Control Point button with a plus sign next to it, and another with a minus sign next to it. The plus button adds a control point with an opacity set initially to 100%, so use this to add the effect. The minus button adds a control point with an opacity set initially to 0%, so use this to remove the effect. The controls points added by both buttons are essentially the same, it’s just that the opacity slider is initially set to the opposite end of the scale, and in both cases you can adjust up or down as desired. Please note that if you have created control points, and then you click away onto another preset, you will lose the control points you have created. You can however save control points using the Copy Control Points feature in the drop-down menu at the top right of the control panel, and then paste them back or into another filter using the Paste Control Points feature found in the same menu. If you choose to stack filters using the Add Filter button, then obviously any control points you created are saved, and you can use control points in all of the stacked filters.

DFINE To access the control points in Dfine you must be on the Reduce tab in the Control Panel and have Control Points selected in the Method drop-down menu.

[Fig 8 – Dfine Control Point] The first thing you will notice is that the control point buttons do not have the usual circle icon on them, and that like Color Efex Pro there is a plus and a minus button. The Plus sets both sliders at 100%, the Minus at 0% (note that these sliders allow values from 0% to 200%). The control points in DFine have two sliders (in addition to the standard size slider), one each for the Contrast Noise and Color Noise sliders. Figure 8

HDR EFEX PRO The control points in HDR Efex Pro can be found in the Selective Adjustments section of the Control Panel.

[Fig 9 – HDR Efex Pro Control Point] Like the Viveza control points, in HDR Efex Pro, a control point can be expanded / contracted using the little triangle at the bottom of the sliders. The expanded slider list contains sliders for Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, Structure, Blacks, Whites, Temperature, Tint and Method Strength.

Figure 9

91

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..)

SILVER EFEX PRO Again, like Viveza and HDR Efex Pro, the control points in Silver Efex Pro are expandable, when fully expanded they contain sliders for Brightness, Contrast, Structure, Amplify Whites, Amplify Blacks, Fine Structure and Selective Colorization.

[Fig 10 – Silver Efex Pro Control Point]

Figure 10

Use Smart Objects for Non-Destructive Editing and Flexibility If you convert your image layer to a Smart Object before using the Nik Filters, they will become Smart Filters. Then when you apply the filter, they will show up in the layer panel underneath the layer (see Figure 11).

[Fig 11 – Smart Filters] To modify the adjustments you made in the filter simply double-click its name. All the settings you chose, including the control points, are retained and can be easily adjusted.

Figure 11

Summary The control point feature in the Nik Filters is incredibly powerful, giving you great control over the adjustments you make to your images. I encourage you to have a play with them if you have not already. Andrew Haysom

TRUNK CURL

I have had an emotional year with the death of my father in January. I haven’t posted many photos on social media this year. But the ones I have posted are a timeline of my feelings. As you can see with my images they portray a range of emotions. During the rollercoaster of the year you can see lots of angry images, submission with the elephants to calm with Indah the Tiger licking her paws. As an emotion came up I would find an image to help me get through the pain. Working on it with textures and actions over the hours helped me heal and calm down. Also, I would go out to the Zoo to get to my happy place and my glorious animals would make images materialize for me, like the elephants pushing each other and the cocky. I would then go home and work on them. I am very blessed to have my zoo so close to my home. I am an emotional photographer and love finding the soul of the animal. Digital art gives me a wonderful outlet to make my photos artistic creations. I love exploring the process of textures and composites to finish off my images. My daughter Stephanie gave me the most amazing dream on the morning of her 32nd Birthday. The image of her was how she came to me in the dream, 8 years old with her shy sweet smile and the most luminous blue eyes. The image of an Angel.

MONSTROUS HE ART

After getting into photography during a dark part in my life, since then, I have never put the camera down. While I was doing a graphic design course I started to fall in love with the capabilities of Photoshop and turned more towards photo artistry and digital art. I love to surround myself with worlds of fantasy, whether that is through fairy tales or through terrifying worlds of horror. Besides being a creator of images, I also create worlds and characters through written stories.
