Come along for a ceilidh for the whole family with a wee science twist! Along with all your favourite dances, from the Gay Gordons to the Flying Scotsman, we’ll be thinking about how we can improve the Dunbar Community. Pupils from Dunbar Primary School will share a new dance developed to explain the Circular Economy and how its introduction to product design in Scotland can help reduce how much we throw away…You won’t just be recycling dance moves on the ceilidh floor! This dance was developed with Dunbar PS pupils and the school, The Zero Waste Town Project, the Science Ceilidh Band and Dunbar SciFest. See the Chain Reaction light show that’s animating the facade of Torness power station during the ceilidh.

I nternational Images for Science Communicating science and helping inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers is something that photography can do especially well. We live in a visual age, and great images can convey a strong message quickly and across barriers of culture or language. Supported by Siemens as part of the Curiosity Project, International Images for Science is a competition that attracted over 2300 entries from scientists, professional and amateur photographers as well as students at school and universities. The images that were selected have a common thread – they are all visually captivating yet each has a science story to tell. Most of all, the images show that good science images don’t always have to be the result of expensive equipment – a passion for the subject and the vision to capture it is often all that is required.

L ight Works Conceived to help celebrate the International Year of Light 2015, Light Works celebrates the diverse ways in which light in all its forms impacts on our modern lives. It is a visual journey through the electromagnetic spectrum – starting with gamma rays and X-rays, through the ultraviolet to the visible, then on through infrared, terahertz and microwaves to radio waves. These 50 images also reveal to us the mysteries of the Universe around us and even of the world inside our bodies. Light Works was created by the Royal Photographic Society in partnership with the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Could a chimp ever be guilty of a human crime? •W omen – science isn’t for you! The UK desperately needs more scientists and engineers, yet highly qualified, talented and ambitious women are still deserting science & technology. What’s really going on? Could the answers be found in role models, mentors and male-support, or do women simply lack ability in science? Join Dr Clare Taylor, Edinburgh Napier University, to discuss what, if anything, we should do about it. • F eel like your brain is half-baked? Join Psychologist Dr Alan Gow, Heriot Watt University, in the Great British Brain Off, to consider the recipe for the perfect brain and what to do if you feel that your own grey matter needs some extra spice.
