On Monday 14 November, Mrs Barlow a P4 teacher from Law Primary School came to visit the Pupil Council and tell us all about an orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania ‘Jane Olevolo’s Orphans’ where her daughter Katie (18) is volunteering. Mrs Gray’s daughter Ellen (17) is in contact with Katie and this brought the orphans to our attention. We decided we wanted to find out more and to help in any small way that we would. There are 17 orphans in total, the boys are Joshua (3), Daniel (6), Elisha (7), Elia (8), Onesmo (8), ………….(2), John (12), Lucas (15), Derrick (15) and Baraka (17). The girls are Monica (2), Maureen (5), Happiness (10), Evaline (14), Maria (14), Rahely (16) and Sarah (16). The children are mostly from the Masai tribe and speak Swahili and are learning English too as the lessons in school are in English. Katie hleps to look after the children and to teach them English and Maths. She walks with the children to school which is a 3 hour round trip! There is no running water and no electricity at night and Katie is allowed one bucket of water per day to keep herself clean and wash her clothes by hand.

The children are very eager to learn but have very few resources indeed. The pupil council and Mrs Gray talked about this and decided to ask for help. We thought we could: Ask for any old clothes – particularly for the girls as they wear mostly boys clothes. Bring in any unwanted books – particularly toddler picture/story books which are easy to read. Bring in any paper/pens/pencils as the orphans love to draw and write. Mrs Barlow will be visiting the orphanage during the Christmas holidays and is happy to take any donations with her. Thank you. Pupil Council & Mrs Gray
