June is one of my
favorite months for many reasons. It is the start of summer, the month both our children were married, bringing the son- and daughter-in-law we prayed for into our family, and it is my birthday month! This June I will celebrate 57 years and I can’t say I hope for another 57, although that would surely be enough to get my headshot on a Smucker’s jar! This June we are honored again to bring you the St. Jude Dream Home. Although the houses have always been inspiring, this one is my favorite. It is smaller than previous Dream Homes have been, but huge on style and design. Each year the home reminds me how blessed our family is personally to have been part of the St. Jude family. The hospital is one of the reasons my sweet niece Julia is cancer free for over 15 years. She and so many others were able to celebrate their “no more chemo” day because of the incredible care provided and research done in Memphis at St. Jude. The spring pollen has settled and we have a few months before ragweed season so I am looking forward to enjoying my birthday month allergy free! Cheers to a happy and safe summer!

A
lifelong connection to a place can be a powerful thing. Powerful enough to draw a person back after years away and a career that has included travels far and wide. It was that type of connection that brought artist Ariel Baron-Robbins home to Oxford, Mississippi, and prompted the renovation of a house there into the perfect backdrop for her work. Baron-Robbins grew up outside Oxford, the daughter of Paula Temple, an art professor at Ole Miss and a renowned Mid South artist, and Adrian Baron-Robbins, an architect and
musician. When her parents moved away several years ago she and her husband, Isaac Lapciuc, bought the house where Ariel grew up, looking forward to having it as a second home in addition to their primary residence in Miami. The home’s seven-acre setting eventually proved to be more than they wanted to keep up, and its rural location was far from the amenities for which the quaint college town is known. She recalls, “We really wanted a weekend house we could drive to from the Memphis airport, and then walk around the square and do all Oxford has to do.”

soon sold the childhood home and went on the hunt for a weekend place that would better suit their needs. “So we set out to buy another house in town and walking distance from the square. We wanted something that we didn't have to do a ton of maintenance on since we weren't going to spend a majority of our time there. But we also wanted something that had a little bit of that country feel that we really enjoyed about my parents’ house. And so this property was just perfect. We fell completely in love with it.” At that point in the conversation Ariel pauses, then admits, “We fell more in love with the backyard than we did the actual house.” The location was exactly what they wanted; squarely in town yet with a secluded feel in the back thanks to its location adjacent to the wooded grounds of the L. Q. C. Lamar House Museum. “We always kind of felt like the house really didn’t suit us, so right at the start of the pandemic we took on a project to completely gut the house and renovate it,” she says. Citing what she calls her “bohemian” background as the child of an artist/art professor and an architect/ musician, Baron-Robbins admits that her criteria for finding a team to steer the project may have been different than most potential clients. “I wanted to find people who would try to give us something that was fresh and contemporary while also not being so fresh and contemporary that it wouldn’t fit or it would be uncomfortable or just too out there. We wanted something that was going to push the boundary, but not not go beyond it.” She signed on with Oxford-based designer Jennifer Russell, who brought contractor Bruce Massey on board to oversee the ambitious construction project. Russell can attest to her clients’ outsidethe-box aesthetic. “One of the things that Ariel and I discussed was not using the color palette of blues, gold and white, which is such a popular design trend in our area. As a designer my main goal is to listen to my clients’ needs within their home and learn their style. 32 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • June 2022

project encompassed almost every part of the house, starting with a complete redo of the downstairs. One of the main reasons the couple wanted a place in Oxford was so they could host Baron-Robbins’ many lifelong friends who still live in the area, so an open entertaining space was a must. To achieve that goal, the new floor plan includes two sitting rooms; one in front of and one behind an enormous open kitchen. Another important objective of the renovation was to showcase works created by the mother and daughter artists in the family. Along with many of her own creations, Baron-Robbins specifically selected pieces from Temple’s large body of work to match the renovated design and had them shipped from France to her Oxford home.

kept the new color palette light and neutral to give the family’s art a place to shine. Neutral, but with plenty of interest. Just inside the front door, the living room is a bold, geometrical statement. The vaulted ceiling soars, punctuated by a light fixture with an imaginative design well suited to an artist’s home. Russell spotted the Hubbardton Forge chandelier in a High Point, North Carolina, showroom and knew it would be perfect. The fixture’s grouping of orbs balances the straight lines and right angles of the dramatic black stone fireplace and the contemporary furnishings in the room. The kitchen blends form and function seamlessly. Anchoring the space is a pair of twin islands: one has seating for six in handsome black barstools by Holly Hunt, and the other houses storage, a sink, dishwasher and microwave. Both are topped with spectacular quartzite in a waterfall treatment that extends from the floor, across the top and all the way down the other side. The same stone is repeated on the backsplashes behind the cooktop and in the beverage area. White custom cabinetry keeps the mood light and airy, while dark wood ceiling beams bring an element of warmth. Those beams extend into the second seating area in the rear of the home, a comfortable spot for the couple to sit and watch TV. Designed in keeping with the rest of the house, this is no ordinary media room. Because the owners didn’t want the TV to be visible when not in use, Russell had to come up with a creative way for it to be there without being there. She engaged Allen Jones, owner of The Wood Shed by JJ in Oxford, who crafted a custom cabinet that raises and lowers the TV via remote control. At the rear of the sitting room a wall of glass doors can slide completely open. They allow access to the home’s newly enlarged back porch and facilitate the kind of indoor/ outdoor gatherings the couple is unable to host in Miami due to year-round hot temperatures. “They enjoy being outside here when the weather is nice—really experiencing the seasons you don’t get in south Florida,” says Russell. Baron-Robbins loves the secluded feel of the porch. “When you’re out there, it's like you're in the country. It's not like you're in the middle of downtown Oxford. And you are! It's just glorious.” To accommodate the revised layout of the downstairs, the primary bedroom, bath and closets were relocated to the second floor. Formerly a bonus room with a vaulted ceiling and an Ole Miss mural, the new suite exudes calm elegance, in keeping with the couple’s minimalist lifestyle. an
artistic home calls for artistic grounds and this is no exception. The redesigned pool and landscaping were inspired by Lapciuc’s travels to Lake Como, Italy. Bluestone squares with green borders give the area a luxury feel; water features in the revamped pool maximize the wow factor. The allure of a charming and beloved town may be what initially drew this couple to have a weekend place in Oxford, but a house that is completely renovated to reflect their life and to be a home for the family’s art will keep them returning there for years to come.

Says Engelberg, “With that Southern California theme in mind, [the chandelier] has a beautiful white plaster textured finish. The white added to the light, airy feel we were going for in a way metal couldn’t have.” As eye-catching as the light fixture hanging above is, the table itself is the larger story in the kitchen. Its top was custom built out of wood reclaimed from a historic building in downtown Memphis that belonged to the homeowner’s family. Engelberg designed the piece and Lou Kerns of Kerns-Wilcheck crafted it. The custom metal base came from an artisan in Utah. Engelberg chose deep, comfy chairs upholstered in a durable denim-colored linen to facilitate casual dining around the table. Continuing the relaxed mood, she placed a sheer, relaxed Roman shade over the large window in the dining area. A simple wool rug in neutral tones defines the area and breaks up the expanse of terracotta tile flooring that covers the entire area. That tile was perhaps the biggest quandary for the homeowners when Engelberg came on board to steer the kitchen remodel. They initially assumed it would have to come out, but the designer envisioned the finished product with the tile floor left intact and convinced the couple to trust her plan. “They love it now! It really does work well,” she says.

the major elements of the project complete, Engelberg’s focus turned to accessorizing the new kitchen. The striking art over the fireplace came to find a home there in a way that can only be attributed to serendipity. The designer found the painting at one of the estate sales she loves to frequent in search of items to use in her work. “I bought [it] immediately because it was amazing and I knew I was going to use it somewhere. I brought it to this house just to see if the size and style would work above the fireplace in the kitchen area. We knew we wanted to do some kind of artwork and it had to be leaning because the wall space above the mantel is at an angle so we couldn't hang anything on it. It was literally perfect. He loved it. She loved it. It's so rare to find a piece of artwork that both agree on! It's almost like I commissioned it and had it painted specifically for the space.” A few more estate sale finds grace the shelves beside the fireplace, along with the homeowner’s collection of cookbooks. Engelberg says a sprinkling of vintage pieces brings an element of interest and keeps any space from looking too “fresh out of the box.”

winner of the 2022 Memphis St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway will truly receive a dream of a home—a charming cottage with a lake view and all the character of a classic home, newly built with today’s best amenities. At Home Memphis & Mid South, a sponsor of the annual fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, recently toured the home, set to be given away on June 26. Now in its 23rd year, the project has raised over $26 million to assist St. Jude in its mission to eradicate childhood cancer. The 2,100-square-foot house may be
moderate in size, but it packs a big design punch with its smart use of space and loads of extra features often found only in larger custom homes. Kim Loudenbeck, whose design firm Warehouse 67 is staging the Dream Home, says that’s what sets it apart. “Trends are to give the spaces that you do have character no matter what size the home is. What working with a home this size allows you to do is upgrade the finishes. I was impressed with the amount and level of trim work, the beautiful detail. The barrel vault in the living room with the brick, I honestly have never seen this application in the Mid South before and it's just beautiful.”

Yokie has been associated with the construction of the St. Jude Dream Home for 12 years and has steered its design for the past four. She says her job is easy, thanks to the wide array of product choices available from the many national and local sponsors. From the General Shale brick to the Shaw floors to the Kichler lighting fixtures, the materials are high-quality and in today’s most up-to-date styles and finishes. The home’s front entry faces a serene lake, creating a peaceful ambiance. The front door welcomes guests into a stunning living room with a brick-lined, barrel-vaulted ceiling. Anchoring the room is a natural stone fireplace with a cedar mantel. Built-in cabinets on both sides play up the cottage charm and echo the style of the cabinetry in the adjoining open kitchen. Every square inch of that kitchen is well-thought-out, including room for a stainless steel gas range, a separate oven/microwave combo and plenty of storage. The island, topped with Silestone quartz counters, holds the sink and dishwasher, in addition to well-lit prep room and seating space. Yokie chose Sherwin Williams Breakwater for the color of the custom cabinetry from Southern Cabinets, with a slightly distressed finish and furniture-style trim to up the cottage kitchen feel. Wide-plank engineered hardwood flooring from Shaw has plenty of traditional appeal, but with both warm and cool tones in its stain it’s neutral enough to work with whatever style of furnishings the future owner chooses. The downstairs primary suite includes features usually found in grand homes. The trayed ceiling in the bedroom immediately draws the eye up to the elegant Kichler chandelier and on to a unique wood trim detail. Shiplap lines one wall for an extra dose of architectural interest and large windows allow natural light to bathe the room.

attached bath, separated by the cutest paneled French doors, is a study in effective use of space. An elegant double vanity with ample drawer space is opposite a freestanding soaking tub. Just past the oversized shower, a fully fitted owner’s closet from Inspired Closets would be the envy of any fashionista. An adorable second bedroom, another full bath and a separate laundry room complete the downstairs, and no detail was left out in any of these spaces. Yokie is especially fond of the three-quarter board and batten paneling that surrounds the guest bedroom. “I love the height. It reminds me of a house with age and character. We’re trying to bring that into every room.” Loudenbeck echoes her fondness for the trimwork. “When you think ultimate cottage style, this is it. Because they did such a great job adding those special details that make a traditional cottage home, we went the extra mile with the antique-look iron bed layered with beautiful textiles—prints and patterns. The trim work is the perfect backdrop.”

says she tries to include a new or unique product or material, “something that people haven’t seen before to dress up a space,” when she makes selections for the Dream Home each year. For 2022 that highlight comes from Shaw Tile. The hall bath features wall tile in a graceful arabesque pattern with further interest coming in its variety of textures, including smooth, linear and slightly rocky quartz. Even the laundry room got special design attention through the addition of a gray and marble-look basketweave tile floor that Loudenbeck says is squarely on trend. “The small-scale stone mosaics are so popular for bathrooms or laundry rooms now. People are tending to go with those more unique patterns because they provide texture and allow an area to have a little pop.” The home’s upstairs holds a third bedroom or multipurpose room and another full bath. The generous bedroom, dressed up with decorative trim and a large window, could serve a multitude of purposes. Loudenbeck envisions it as “a place for the family to have down time to hang out and watch TV. But it’s large enough to hold a pullout sleeper sofa, so guests could have a separate wing with their own bath, living area and a place to sleep.” Loudenbeck says she was thrilled to come on board to stage her first St. Jude Dream Home. While the mission of the hospital holds a special place in the native Memphian’s heart, the project gives her a chance to explore a design style not commonly found in the Mid South. She hopes those who tour the house will enjoy the change of pace. “We don't get to do cottage style very much here in Memphis. If we were more in a coastal area, the Carolinas or Florida or the Hamptons, you would see more cottage but I think that people will enjoy something different, something unique and a little bit out of the box. Yokie says the significance of that is tremendous. “It's important when someone walks in here that they feel at home and it’s impossible to do that without great furnishings.” Although the furnishings are the ultimate finishing touch, Loudenbeck admits that the house is the true star of the show. “What's great is that no matter what we add, the home itself is absolutely stunning. We're not having to make the home have character or charm; it's already there.”

THE INGREDIENTS: 1 loaf challah or brioche bread 6 eggs ⅓ cup milk 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. ground nutmeg 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar 4 Tbsp. melted butter, plus more for cooking ½ tsp. almond extract 4 oz. cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp. pure maple syrup 4-5 fresh peaches Powdered sugar, whipped cream and maple syrup for serving
THE STEPS: Begin by mixing together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar and melted butter in a blender to make the batter. Transfer to a flat-bottomed baking dish or cake pan and set aside. In a separate small bowl, combine the cream cheese and 2 Tbsp. of maple syrup until smooth. Set aside. Wash, pit and slice the peaches. Set aside. To assemble, cut eight ½-inch slices of the bread. You’ll use two slices for each serving. Take two slices at a time and open them like a book so they fit back together as one slice. Spread ¼ of the cream cheese mixture onto the inside surface of each set of slices. Arrange peach slices on one side, covering the entire surface before closing up the sandwich and pressing the two sides together lightly. Continue this process until all four are made. One at a time, carefully lift the assembled French toast, place it in the prepared batter and press lightly to help it absorb the batter. Flip it over so the batter can saturate the other side before lifting it out of the batter and placing it in a buttered skillet over medium-low heat. Cook until browned on one side and turn over to cook the other side. Place the cooked French toast on a serving platter and arrange any extra slices of peaches around it. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with whipped cream and maple syrup.

THE INGREDIENTS: 3 ½ lbs. bone-in beef short ribs or 2 lbs. boneless short ribs ¼ cup flour 1 Tbsp. kosher salt 1 Tbsp. freshly ground black pepper 4 Tbsp. vegetable oil 4-inch section fresh ginger root, peeled and minced (about ¼ cup) 3 Tbsp. minced fresh garlic (about 4 large cloves) 4 fresh peaches, pitted and roughly chopped 1 bunch scallions 1 cup beef broth 1 cup hoisin sauce ¼ cup soy sauce 2 Tbsp. chili paste
THE STEPS: Mix together the flour, salt and pepper. Coat the short ribs with the seasoned flour, brushing off any excess. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Working with a few at a time with a little vegetable oil, brown the short ribs on all sides and transfer to slow cooker. Working in the same pan over medium heat, add the garlic, ginger and chopped peaches and stir. Reserve the green tops of the scallions for garnishing, and roughly chop the white portions, discarding the bottom roots. Add to the pan with the peaches along with the beef broth, hoisin sauce, soy sauce and chili paste. Bring to a boil and pour over the short ribs in the slow cooker. Cover the short ribs and cook on low for 8-9 hours. Serve with steamed sticky rice. Before serving, mince the reserved green tops of the scallions and sprinkle over portions of short ribs. SWEET CORN PUREE: 12 oz. frozen sweet corn (thawed) 1 large shallot, diced 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter ⅔ cup heavy cream ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. ground pepper ⅛ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes In a large skillet, heat about 1 Tbsp. of olive oil. Sauté shallot until translucent. Add thawed corn and cook about 3-4 minutes. Add butter and heavy cream. Continue cooking two more minutes. Add salt, pepper and crushed red pepper flakes. Purée mixture in blender until smooth. Set aside.
T O M AT O T O P P I N G : 3 Roma tomatoes, diced 1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. ground pepper 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Add all the above ingredients to a small mixing bowl and toss gently to combine. Set aside.
SCALLOPS: 24 sea scallops (3 per person) 2 Tbsp. olive oil Salt Pepper Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. While the oil is getting hot, pat the scallops dry with paper towel. Be sure to get scallops as dry as possible to ensure even browning. Sprinkle each scallop with the desired amount of salt and pepper on both sides. When oil is hot, add the scallops. Work in batches and be sure not to overcrowd the skillet. Cook about two minutes without touching the scallops, then flip and cook two more minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel and cover with foil to keep warm while cooking the remaining scallops.
T O P L AT E : Add the desired amount of sweet corn purée to individual plates or bowls. Place three scallops atop the purée and finish with a large dollop of the tomato mixture. Enjoy! June 2022 • athomemms.com | 77

PLASTIC SURGERY & RESHAPING THE BODY Every woman’s body is unique. Every woman’s body changes over time.
Whether it’s pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, gravity or age, the end result is the same—changes in the shape of breasts and tummy. Although these changes may be permanent, natural-appearing restoration of shape can be achieved with the right surgical procedures. Breasts. Younger women with small breasts may desire to fill their ideal brassiere or increase their cup size. Postpartum women may lose breast volume, especially after breastfeeding. This change occurs predominantly in the upper portion of the breast (involution) and is often accompanied by loose skin, stretch marks and sagging. These changes are known as ptosis, which is defined as the lower pole of the breast or nipple falling below the bra crease. Silicone gel breast augmentation with smooth implants is performed when a larger breast is desired and the overlying skin is supple. These devices have a natural feel and appearance, and are both safe and long-lasting. When the breast has sagged, a mastopexy (surgical breast lift) raises its position as well as the position of the nipple. These procedures may be performed simultaneously when both volume and lifting are desired. This “augment plus lift” is the most complex breast reshaping procedure and requires the highest level of knowledge, experience, judgment and skill. The result is a fuller, rounder, more youthful-appearing breast with inconspicuous or camouflaged scars that are concealed by a brassiere. Yet another alternative is creating moderate volume enhancement by injecting excess fat that is suctioned from the flanks, hips and thighs.

Tummy A sagging tummy may occur after pregnancy or weight loss. Both the musculature and the skin are stretched and may not recover, even after diet, exercise and a return to pre-pregnancy weight. The appearance is a lower abdomen “pooch” with stretch marks, and further weight loss may worsen it. Fat can “redistribute” to the flanks (“love handles”), back or hips (“saddlebags”). These changes are circumferential (360˚) and may be obvious in swimwear or form-fitting clothes. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is surgical removal of the lower abdominal skin, leaving a scar that is usually concealed within the bikini line. The belly button is usually repositioned and the midline muscle is tightened with sutures. Liposuction is often performed simultaneously (lipoabdominoplasty). The result is a tighter, flatter, smoother tummy area and an enhanced three-dimensional lower body silhouette that is visible from the front and the back. “Non-surgical, minimally invasive” or external methods of tummy reshaping often result in undercorrection. A knowledgeable, experienced and skilled surgeon knows how to design and perform the unique breast or abdominal procedures that create natural and long-lasting results.

May and June we celebrate moms and dads with special days of recognition. Being a parent is one of life’s most rewarding and challenging jobs. Most people experience both excitement and anxiety over parenting. Each stage of parenting presents its own set of issues to induce both those emotions, and a plethora of others. Babies do not come with a handbook. Children are unique in temperament and each requires a unique style of nurturing to develop a confident person with healthy selfesteem. Parenting through imperfections with a nurturing spirit is essential to developing a lifelong relationship with your children. What is a nurturing parent? Why is it important to be one? The definition of the word nurture is “to care for and encourage the development of.” It is important to develop a nurturing parenting style because your children will be adults with you a lot longer than they are children in your life. Your children will spend the first 18 years of life, or perhaps longer as they emerge into adulthood, in your care. They will be adults with you from age 18 forward, which, if everyone lives an average lifespan, equates to about 50 years. The first step to becoming a nurturing parent requires reflection on your own life experiences; remembering your life experiences from as far back as you can recall to the present. Perhaps you’ll want to write your life story, identifying moments along the way that shaped your 84 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • June 2022
thoughts and behaviors because of the way those experiences made you feel. Identify the positive and negative characteristics of the people who nurtured your development. If possible, get to know their stories. The second step on the road to being a nurturing parent is understanding brain development. The brain runs a person’s life from the day they are born until they die. When a child is born, the only part of their brain that is developed is the brain stem. It sends signals based on feelings in the body. Infants and toddlers communicate primarily based on feelings from the body. When they feel hungry or need to be held (comforted) they cry. Infants begin to develop a connection with their caregivers based on the way their needs are met. The fight, flight or freeze modes come from the brain stem. As people progress in the stages of life, the brain progresses toward full development, usually between the ages of 25 and 28. Understanding a child’s stage of brain development may help us temper expectations of our children and be more understanding of their needs. The third step to being a nurturing parent is to develop empathic skills that include being curious about your child rather than making assumptions. Understanding brain development and stages of life helps develop empathy.
H E A LT H Y Y O U Empathy includes nurturing discipline, allowing children to express their feelings, identifying with and respecting those feelings, showing kindness toward others with whom you interact, and caring for pets, plants and the environment. Talking with children about the experiences of characters in books and movies helps you and your children develop empathy as you consider through discussion the characters’ feelings and behaviors.
The fourth step to being a nurturing parent is identifying your family values and beliefs, then developing morals and behaviors that support them. Family systems are strengthened when children have a sense of connection through values, morals and beliefs that help them navigate life within and outside of their family communities. Family rules support your values, beliefs and morals and provide guidelines for children throughout the stages of development. Rules, expectations and consequences should be appropriate to a child’s stage of development, hence they should change as the child progresses in development.
The fifth step to being a nurturing parent is developing communication techniques that support a sense of
self-worth in your child. Children with a high sense of self-worth make better decisions and are less likely to give in to peer pressures. Our self-worth is determined by the way we see ourselves; our thoughts and feelings shape it. When children are shamed, looked at or spoken to in a manner that sends the message that they are bad, not allowed to share thoughts or feelings, or asked questions like “what is wrong with you?” they develop a low sense of self-worth. When their mistakes or violations are discussed from a place of nurture, they have an opportunity to be understood. Children are better able to receive correction and consequences through discipline than punishment. Punishment destroys self-esteem; discipline nurtures it.
Parenting is an honor and a privilege. Children learn from their parents through modeling their behaviors. Parents shape the health of future generations through nurture. Though this list is not comprehensive it is a guideline of keys to strengthening the family. All children seek connection with their parents at every stage of life. If your family is struggling or if you simply want to strengthen your family bond, seek the counsel of a family therapist or take a parenting/family course. Your family is worth it!
