For 139 years, the Irish and the not-so-Irish take to Peachtree Street for the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Parade. Presented by The Coca-Cola Company, the parade features more than 2,000 dancers, musicians, animals and Irish and local dignitaries. The parade takes place March 11 at noon at the intersection of Peachtree and 15th streets and travels down to 5th Street — so there’s plenty of room to watch. Spring in Atlanta is glorious. Overnight, flowers bloom, birds sing and the city gears up for its beloved traditions of annual festivals and events. Here are a few to add to your list.
BY MARY WELCHWhile the calendar has a different version of when spring starts, in the ATL, it starts with the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, April 14-16. For more than 80 years, Atlantans and art lovers have gathered in Piedmont Park to enjoy the flowering dogwoods and admire the work of dozens of artists. Just about every kind of art is represented including sculpture, paintings, pottery, jewelry, glassworks, leather and photography. There also is a nationally renowned juried Fine Artist Market for serious collectors. In addition to the art, there is a full schedule of music plus, a Kids’ Village, interactive make-and-take activities and face painting. Who can forget the food — glorious food — funnel cakes, gyros, crab cakes, onion rings, kettle corn and cheesesteaks? www.dogwood.org

Top headliners will include Shakey Graves and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, along with bands Ghostland Observatory, Maggie Rose, Rome & Duddy and many more. The festival’s screens often include in-person dialogue with filmmakers, which gives audience members a meaningful opportunity to network, interact and engage. www.atlantafilmfestival.com
A popular soft drink (Coca-Cola) was invented here, as you probably know. But did you also know that your lawn mower (Home Depot), weather report (The Weather Channel) and your favorite classic movie channel (Turner Classic Movies) all probably come from Atlanta companies?
Contrary to what you have heard, there’s really only one Peachtree Street, but there are plenty (around 70) drives, avenues, lanes and places also named “Peachtree.” There are even fewer actual peach trees. That’s another story.
Atlanta is so much more than just the “Hollywood of the South” or “ATLwood” with movies such as “Black Panther,” “Selma,” “The Hunger Games,” “ATL,” “Drumline” and a good portion of the Fast & Furious series. Hit Netflix and stream “Ozark,” “Raising Dion,” “Containment,” “Stranger Things,” “The Walking Dead” and more filmed in Atlanta. You can’t forget the hit TV show “Atlanta” based in the A.
Welcome to Atlanta. We’re glad you are here. Here are a few basics and a few fun facts about our city that will help you fit right in.

“Atlanta.” You’ll hear “The A,” “The ATL” or “ATL” from native Atlantans and those of us that call Atlanta home, but you won’t hear “Hotlanta.”
Now that you know the facts, here’s how to ATL like a local.
Tip 1: Out and About
Atlanta is a Southern city so we have plenty of warmish days even in wintertime, great for spending time outdoors. Piedmont Park in the heart of Midtown is packed with walking trails, softball and soccer fields and a
dog park. Downtown? Find Woodruff Park near Five Points and Centennial Olympic Park near Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Tip 2: On Foot and On Wheels
Atlantans love Atlanta BeltLine, a walking and biking trail that unites the city’s intown neighborhoods. City dwellers love to take to the BeltLine for a walk, a run or a bike ride.
Tip 3: Welcome Everybody
Atlanta is proud of its large LBGTQ+ population. The A’s many gay and lesbian bars, restaurants and nightclubs are legendary as is our fall Atlanta Pride Festival and Parade.
Tip 4: Civil Rights
Atlanta is regarded as the heartbeat of the American civil rights movement. Learn all about it at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Apex Museum, Auburn Avenue Research Library, the Herndon Home Museum and other historic sites throughout Atlanta.
5:
Atlanta’s local, chef-owned restaurants are found in every neighborhood and reflect the rich diversity of our city. Visit local bookstores and boutiques to bring home that perfect souvenir.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is one of the most modern and unique stadiums in the country. It is home to the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC as well as many musical events, college bowl games — and the occasional Super Bowl. It is the most sustainable sports venue in the world, boasts a world-class art collection and has budget-conscious restaurants.
Now, even if you don’t feel like a local, at least you can hang out like one.
Whether you spend days in Atlanta visiting from a far-flung city or are popping in from the suburbs, there is much to do. New exhibits, events and performances make now the perfect time to visit (or re-visit) Atlanta’s top attractions.

50 Fun Things started in the early 2000s as a brochure to guide visitors to all the new things to do in Atlanta after the Centennial Olympic Games. Since then, it has been printed annually as a brochure and as a list on Atlanta.net.
50 Fun Things was redesigned in 2020 for the launch of DiscoverAtlanta.com (formerly known as Atlanta.net). The site and brochure were covered with icons drawn by Atlanta muralist George Baker III. The brochure expanded with stickers for visitors to track the places they had been. 50 Fun Things 2023 takes the sticker party up a notch. It has been transformed into an interactive game – the 50 Fun Things Check-In Challenge – in the Discover ATL app. The brochure, app and site all feature artwork by local artist Ross Peterkin.
ACVB showcased its redesigned brochure, revamped website for 50
Fun Things to See and Do in Atlanta and the 50 Fun Things Check-In Challenge during the first hospitality event of the year at the Fox Theatre.
